Another Exciting Fourth Quarter

One more Sunday, one more set of minor heart-attacks, and just as importantly one more victory.

Like it or not, that's our Pittsburgh Steelers.  What is interesting, is that in contrast to last year  when the Steelers made an art of coming back, this team has played almost the entire season with a lead.

In fact when the Vikings scored a TD in the second quarter to take a 4 point lead, it was the largest lead any team has held on us this season.  In our two losses Chicago and Cincinnati each held a 3 point lead for a total of 29 seconds combined.  The Vikings second quarter lead lasted less than 5 minutes, and despite a series of furious and frightening rallies, the Vikings never tied or lead again.

As we move into the off week there will no doubt be plenty of debate about this team and it's chances to repeat. There is plenty of cause for optimism but also some obvious issues that need to be addressed. The most serious of these is our inability to put teams away. Before I look at the game, I just want to take a quick peak back over our shoulder.

Seven games into the season and our Pittsburgh Steelers are 5-2.  For those of you wondering that's exactly where we were after 7 last year.  The big difference is that last year game 7 was a painful loss to the Giants. This week we come off an important win against a previously unbeaten team and head into a much needed off week.

More after the jump.

Star-divide

At the very end of the third quarter with the Steelers leading and starting on their 24 yard line --- Rashard Mendenhall peeled off a beauty of a run for 17 yards. Following an incomplete pass on 1st down, Rashard had another nice run for 5 yards, setting up a crucial 3rd and 5.

Ben dropped behind good protection against the blitz and hit Santonio in full stride on a slant. Santonio made his man miss and tore through the Vikings secondary for 45 yards, before finally being brought down on the 9 yard line.

It seemed like the Steelers were poised to take control of the game, it also seemed that Mendenhall was just the man for the job. To that point he had picked up 69 yards on 10 carries - for a very healthy 6.9 average (nearly twice the average of the Adrian Peterson, AKA purple Jesus, AKA the best player in football)

What transpired started one of the strangest 15 minutes of football played in Pittsburgh in recent memory. It showed the best and the worst of the Steelers and frankly, its safe to say that it could have easily gone either way.

Instead of pounding his way to glory, Mendenhall inexplicably found himself back in Mike Tomlin's non-existent doghouse when he dove over the pile in a mis-guided attempt to pick up an extra yard or two.

The ball was poked loose and with it any dreams of putting the game away fast.  Although I generally don't get negative in the game thread I couldn't help myself.

At the time I wrote "Why is it that every time the Steelers have an opponent on the ground with their foot on their throat, they always bend down and lend them a hand up?" Little did I know.

Apart from the Mendy, Fumble, there were two low points in the quarter for me. The first came at 10 minutes left in with Farve facing and 3rd and 18 from the Minnesota 29 yard line. Farve dropped back, got good protection and hit Rice on the sideline for 25 yards and the first down. I won't write much about the play, because I would really like to see the film on it, but I will say that even though the play ended up being close, Rice was wide open - and an earlier pass would have made it an easy gain.

Thankfully that drive was ended at the Steelers nine, when Brett Kiesel made a superlative strip of Farve knocking the ball loose from a solid three to four feet away. Lamar Woodley accompanied by a phalanx of Steeler blockers did his best James Harrison impersonation to take it back for 6. With the score at 20-10 and only 6 minutes left that really should have been the ball game.

But folks, this ain't your ball control never lose a lead Steelers.

For the second week in a row the Steelers followed a score by allowing a kick-off return for a touch-down. You get the sense that they might be spending some time on that in practice next week.

Again, I think the return deserves a post of it's own, but after watching it twice I am going to call two names.  First, Jeff Reed. After brawling with Pittsburgh's finest during the week, Jeff Reed looked downright scared to make a tackle. In fact he looked like he was playing two hand touch.

The other man, who looked terribly out of position to me was our Kewian Ratliff.   Despite having time and an angle he never even comes close to touching Harvin. I am kind of getting tired of noticing Ratliff when he messes up.

What happened next should not inspire Steeler fans. The offense got the ball back with a 3 point lead, and a chance to make a statement. Instead they managed a single first down on a Minnesota Penalty and were VERY lucky to not have the Vikings recover a Roethlisberger fumble inside field goal range.

The defense, was luckier still. After Adrian Peterson made William Gay look foolish and busted off a 29 yarder that should have secured a tie at the very least, the Vikings hit some bad luck.  At 2nd and 3 on the Pittsburgh 19 Farve hit Chester Taylor in the hands with a short, safe pass. The ball flew up in the air, and Keryon Fox made an a heads up play to catch it. It's arguable wether he should have taken it to the house instead of falling to the ground, but 80 yards and 6 points later the Steelers had a hard fought, and somewhat lucky win.

On to other thoughts:  :

The goal line stand. The defense has been much maligned for being soft this year, but their stand from the one inch line, was a thing of beauty. After stopping Adrian Peterson on 1st and 1 - and getting a penalty called, they stopped him again on 1st and inches. The Vikings respecting the two straight stops went for trickery and ended up with two incomplete passes and a field goal. Four plays from inside the one and four stops. A tremendous stand on the part of the D - with great effort by the whole crew - especially the linebackers who were very active in pass protection.

Mike Wallace - As you may have noticed from my recent post about Mike Wallace, I am a fan. In the post I compare his body of work in the first six games to that of other rookier Steeler wide receivers. At the end I asked people if they thought he would continue at his current pace, improve or decrease. Personally, I thought he would either stay at this current pace or decrease slightly. After watching his effort today, I am not so sure. He is sure handed and blazing fast.

Penalties - the arguments have already begun. No doubt if we lost we would be upset about some of the calls that didn't go our way. The same is true of the Vikings. I guess it's no consolation to them, to think of the tripping penalty as payback for the 500 times that holding has not been called on Deebo this year, or for the strange call for defensive holding on Miller in the first half.  To be honest though, it's not our problem.

Mendy - Let's not get too excited about the drop. The rookie (we should still think of him as a rookie) made a stupid mistake, but it was the only one in a generally excellent effort. Mendy lit up the best run defense in the league for a 6.9 yard average on 10 carries. He could have and should have had more. He also did a generally good job of pass protection.

Moore - I love that guy. If you want to see something beautiful go re-watch the block he makes on a linebacker at the end of the Holmes 45 yard catch and run. He absolutely levels the guy. This picture does not do it justice, but it still makes me smile.

Fireshot_capture__006_-__nfl_game_center__minnesota_vikings_at_pittsburgh_steelers_-_2009_week_7__-_www_nfl_com_gamecenter_2009102504_2009_reg7_vikings_steelers_tab_watch_medium

Ben - Did anybody else notice that Ben has been somewhat careless with the ball at times. I feel like there were at least 3-4 times when the Vikes had a very good chance at a pick, not to mention the fumble late in the game, that really should have been recovered by the Vikings. I have to say that I think it's a trend from the past three to four weeks. I think Ben has been quite lucky to not have many more INTs. It's hard to argue with the way that he is playing, but I wonder if we won't see more picks against good teams and good secondaries.

Casey Hampton and the D line - how in the world does a nose tackle get three offsides penalties? It's inexcusable. Having said that the defensive line did an amazing job holding Peterson in check and generating pressure on Farve. Kiesel was in the back-field all day. Ziggy Hood looked good filling in for Kirshke, I have a feeling that we might see more and more of him.

Line Backers: Fox - We are very lucky to have this guy as a back-up at inside linebacker. His pick was an incredibly heads up opprotunistic play.  Deebo - was a beast.

Secondary:  William Gay got picked on. He also made Adrian Peterson's weekly highlight reel. I am sure we'll be seeing replays of that one for the rest of time.  Ike Taylor had good coverage, but simply missed the ball a couple of times.

Anyways, that's it for now.

Good night to all

Overall

Good win. Many positive with a few things to work on. Mendy’s fumble was a stupid mistake and one I doubt he will make again, all fumbles suck but effort fumbles are at least a little more forgivable, even if it was misguided. The D for the most part looked more like last years which was nice to see. The O seemed out of sync most of the game, the play calling didn’t seem to have any continuity to it. I thought we could have run right all day but did very little. The bye week is at the perfect time. We should be able to fix most if not all of our concern areas as most are not talent areas, except for what’s my name -AP, what’s my name -AP Willie Gay. That position needs to be addressed in the off season. Short bus special teams also need some major practice time. All in all though, we played very good D, not our best by any stretch on O and we beat a very good team. When this team puts it all together on the same day, they will be scary good.

I'm starting Buddha for my fantasy blogger squad

I’m starting to agree with worldtrip (that’s happening too often these days) that you’re doing your best to take over the recommended posts section.

A couple thoughts:

1. Moore’s block was a thing of beauty. I was also really impressed on that play that Hartwig had made his way down there to be a part of the play. And looking back at the picture I think Essex is hauling his load up there to hit someone. One thing that I love about this team is the fight to the whistle attitude. There may be some mental errors here and there with occasions where they get beat physically, but this is a team that will not quit on each other.
2. One of Casey’s jumps pissed me off. There was clear video that the center jerked his left hand, simulating a snap movement. Casey went forward, and there’s no going back when the Hamp gets going. The others? Who knows?
3. Mendy and Wallace both look to be ballers. Mendy needs to respect the value of the ball more than a few yards, but I think Tomlin will preach that enough to get it through his head. Wallace is a beast, pure and simple.
4. Hats off to the Vikes defensive game plan. I’m nervous we’ll see a lot more of it. The announcers kept griping that Minni was only sending 4 guys. But they played a lot of 2 deep coverage with their linebackers in the middle zones. I’m glad Ben didn’t force it down the field when it wasn’t working, but wish we could have switched our plan of attack sooner to take advantage.
5. Speaking of great blocks (at least I was a while ago)- Santonio had a great crackback block on Jared Allen on one outside run. Gotta love our Prima Donna WR’s laying blocks on DEs.
6. I think Ratliff needs to be de-activated. It’s another one of those things where I wonder what the coaches are seeing that keep him there. Carey Davis deserves that roster spot more for what he brings to the special teams. If we could get Anthony madison back I’d be game, but I think he’s been picked up by another squad.
7. I’m going to miss Jeff Reed next year. I’ll be holding my breath on every field goal in Heinz Field again. But his kick offs are not impressing me, and his lack of effort on long returns are very annoying. I remember old man Berger with two pulled hamstrings making better tackles than that.
8. Robo-Punter is kicking well in my opinion. His distance isn’t out of this world but his placement and hang time are doing the job well. Every punt is nearly un-returnable.

That’s enough ramblings for one lunch hour. Keep it up SteelerBuddha, I’m enjoying the content!

ha thanks Chicago

Couldn’t agree with you more (Moore?) on numbers 1 and 5. Our team is busting ass. As you so eloquently put it that is Trai Essex in the picture “hauling his load” 40 yards down-field to make a block. Somebody else mentioned Hood looked great blocking for Fox (he actually looked faster than Lamar Woodley).

Regarding number 2. I missed the jump, but it doesn’t surprise me. There was a ton of movement on the Minnesota line all day that did not get called.

Re: number 6, I am beginning to feel that way. I am sure the coaches
are wise, but he hasn’t looked like a baller through 6.

After brawling with Pittsburgh’s finest during the week, Jeff Reed looked downright scared to make a tackle. In fact he looked like he was playing two hand touch.

You think if he had been drunk, he woulda manned up and gone after Harvin more aggressively? Sorry, I thought that was a funny thought.

On Ben
I think you and I shared some sentiments on this after the Browns game. He was a bit sloppy in that game, and it became even more apparent in this one. If Winfield had been in and the defense could have been more aggressive, how many picks would Ben have thrown?
We need to get Mendenhall to hold on to the damn ball and go back to being a running team. Nearly 7 yards a carry is ridiculous, but to only give him the ball 10 times is even more ridiculous.

I agree about Ben being sloppy the last two weeks

I bet Tomlin gave him the first one but will put together a film study for him after this one and get him back on track.

That Gay Play

That Gay had will make me cringe for the rest of my life. People will think that’s what Peterson did to even the best defense in the league. Never mind the 65 yards and being stopped, twice, at the one.

Exaclty

I was thinking the same thing. We are going to have to watch re-runs of that play for the next 5 years. We wont get to see the 5 times that we stopped AP in the backfield.

The one good thing is that it wasn’t Deebo or Troy (honestly, I don’t really see either of those guys getting stoned like that). Remember when Urlacher got steam-rolled by Bettis. I bet Bears fans didn’t like THAT highlight.

I like Mendy, but that Bettis guy was fun to watch.

And the day Harrison or Polamalu gets stoned like THAT

Is the day hell officially freezes over and flying pigs rain candy crap from the skies over Hines Field.

Not. Gonna. Happen.

Like it or not, that’s our Pittsburgh Steelers. What is interesting, is that in contrast to last year when the Steelers made an art of coming back, this team has played almost the entire season with a lead.

This is actually an interesting point. Everyone complains that this team shows no “going for the jugular” like last year, when the fact is there was no jugular to go for. Most of the teams we faced last year were in the process of trying to mindlessly run the ball in the 4th quarter to run out the clock, and our defense has always been superlative in obvious run situations…

Likewise, we have always been susceptible to the little quick outs, which is what the two minute drill is all about… so the comparisons between this year’s defense and last year’s are probably badly skewed…

Instead of pounding his way to glory, Mendenhall inexplicably found himself back in Mike Tomlin’s non-existent doghouse when he dove over the pile in a mis-guided attempt to pick up an extra yard or two.

Yep. But Mike T dealt with it — by benching Mendy — and then moving on…

Agreed. NO way should we be letting anyone complete a 3 and 18! I also hated the 4th and 1, play action pass which was completed for a bundle…

Again, I think the return deserves a post of it’s own, but after watching it twice I am going to call two names. First, Jeff Reed. After brawling with Pittsburgh’s finest during the week, Jeff Reed looked downright scared to make a tackle. In fact he looked like he was playing two hand touch.

What are you talking about??? Skippy assumed a fighting stance… and watched Harvin run past him… I think he was pretty proud of himself. When he assumed the fighting stance against Pittsburgh’s finest, they jacked him up and ran him in…

The goal line stand. The defense has been much maligned for being soft this year, but their stand from the one inch line, was a thing of beauty. After stopping Adrian Peterson on 1st and 1 – and getting a penalty called, they stopped him again on 1st and inches. The Vikings respecting the two straight stops went for trickery

I think that Brad Childress is simply infatuated with having Brett and he forgets sometimes that it is Adrian Peterson’s team. I mean, that’s what the talking heads all keep telling us… so it must be true… right?

Moore – I love that guy. If you want to see something beautiful go re-watch the block he makes on a linebacker at the end of the Holmes 45 yard catch and run. He absolutely levels the guy. This picture does not do it justice, but it still makes me smile.

I don’t love him as the guy trying to pick up the first down when everyone is waiting for him. He’s an OK 3rd down back… but we need Mendenhall to stop the dropsies and be the man.

I also cannot understand why they don’t try Logan out in the 3rd down backer’s role… why not try to get him the ball in space and see what he can do? A little swing pass to him coming out of the backfield would be fun to watch…

Ben – Did anybody else notice that Ben has been somewhat careless with the ball at times. I feel like there were at least 3-4 times when the Vikes had a very good chance at a pick, not to mention the fumble late in the game, that really should have been recovered by the Vikings… It’s hard to argue with the way that he is playing, but I wonder if we won’t see more picks against good teams and good secondaries.

No it’s not… how many pick sixes does he have to throw before everyone realizes this is a huge problem? Ben needs to wake up every morning and say to himself: “I am not a gunslinger. I am not a gunslinger. I am a smart, professional quarterback who does not take stupid chances with the ball…”

by MarkJoel66 on Oct 27, 2009 2:51 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Great stuff

Agree – Mendy needs to step and be the man at the end of the game. He’ll get there, this is only his second fumble this season and the first one was somewhat of a fluke. I think he’ll be fine.

As for Logan, he’s been out as receiver a couple times, but I don’t think that the is nearly the third down back that Moore is. Remember that one of the big things you want out of a 3rd down back is the ability to block. Logan is a tough guy, but I just don’t see him stopping a blitzing linebacker.

Mendy's fumble

Although it was a stupid play, it was the result of him trying too hard at an inopportune time. It’s important to remember that it was an ‘effort fumble.’ He was fighting and diving for extra yards, not hot-dogging it into the end zone. I can live with that type of mistake.

by HereWeGo on Oct 27, 2009 2:14 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't know

I like Mendy, and he’s a MUCH better back than FWP, but leaping from five yards out? That doesn’t make any sense at all. You’re not an Olympic jumper, you’re a football player with a few extra pounds of gear. You’re not making it from that point. If anything, by leaping and coming down you’re sacrificing yards that you could make by keeping yourself on the ground and fighting through tacklers.

Steelers vs Vikings game to be shown again on NFL Network tonight at 9:30 PM

Wasn’t sure where to post this. So I chose the uppermost recommended fanpost, hoping to share with the most.

Yeah but it kind of sucked

I was surprised… usually they cut in quotes from the coach, and some things from the sideline. When they went to their “Sounds of the Game” the only sound you heard was guys breathing and running… pretty lame.

I was expecting MUCH more from NFL, considering it was the big game of the week…

Yes, it kind of did.

I was hoping to look at plays more deeply, wasn’t possible though with this condensed version. Went to bed after the 3rd quarter, still want to catch the 4th quarter later in the week.
