San Diego Chargers (2-1) @ Pittsburgh Steelers (1-2): BTSC Open Thread (1st Half)
Ok, it's time to get the 2009 season back on track. That could very well happen tonight at Heinz Field when the Steelers host the visiting San Diego Chargers. It's the third time the two teams have played in Pittsburgh since Week 11 of last year. Last week, I didn't feel good about the Steelers chances of winning on the road at Cincinnati. This week I love the matchup and the Steelers chances to level their record at 2-2. The Steelers offense seems to match up nicely with the Chargers defense, and if the Steelers secondary can improve their play this week, they can hopefully slow down the usually explosive passing game of Phillip Rivers and the Chargers offense.
Come on Steelers! Slam San Deigo!

ok just two hours
This afternoon was weird. First rooting for the pats, which was distasteful, but not terribly unpleasant. Flacco was the better QB out there today. He’s nasty. Flacco to Mason was automatic. They had to scrape Jared Gaither off the field and I think Ayanbadejo says he’ll need surgery.
As bad as it was to root for the Pats, at least they won. Rooting for the browns in OT against Cinci was even worse! Geeze just to have a short glimpse into the pathetic world of the browns fan was enough for me for a lifetime! They SUCK! This game was less than a minute away from being a tie. That would have been rich. But if you want to see the bengals fail all you need to do is wait long enough. From the way they acted this week, no one told them the season is 16 games long.
I guess none of this matters if the Steelers don’t take care of business tonight. I know I enjoyed the hell out of the early games today. Tonight can only get better!
I just want Woodley to give rollercoaster rides to Rivers all night and I’ll be happy. We can take up PayPal donation fund for the rollercoaster fines!

"It was an attrition football game and you know we like that."
NEVER!
EVER ROOT PATS !! …. at least the ravens are a worthy enemy … the pats are just annoying as all holy hell.
LETS GO STEELERS!!!!!!!!!
"at least the ravens are a worthy enemy"
yeah but the pats aren’t in our division. Simple math my friend.
"It was an attrition football game and you know we like that."
I always hated math
But I did it as well and agree. As much as it made me want to scrub myself with Clorox and a loofah I was hoping the Pats would win simply because of our division.
I'll root against us if it gives us a playoff berth...
Not sure how that scenario would be possible. But i would do it.
I actually think I remember there being a scenario for a team one year where it was like if a couple particular teams won, then said team was almost better off losing one and going into tie breakers.
I cant honestly remember who. But I remember they had the early game, and like if they knew the outcome, they could just lose and would line up better or something to that effect.

You sure Ike isn’t reacquainting himself with his fingers, he certainly doesn’t use them for catching. - Brian (DaBolts) on "Face Me Ike"
Actually, +11
As in Roy Williams. Romo was high over the middle, and his receivers, like Williams, had to stretch to get the ball and were defenseless.
He got Williams killed. And several others were maimed. Surprised the surviving Dallas receivers didn’t develop alligator arms.
But it was no surprise that the announcers kept saying Romo was high with his passes, but never once mentioned he was killing his teammates.
I would kill everyone in this room for a drop of sweet beer.

the titans suck at everything
I doubled down on fantasy on that supposedly weak jags D. 14 points for my efforts. It was fun to see the uppity Titans fan I watched last year’s Steelers game with get all salty. Man everyone is getting their licks on the Titans this season. Don’t disrespect the Towel.

That's right
They haven’t won since the towel incident, have they?

I hate em and they stank!
I hated em last year twice. And they stanked twice…. They going down!
I think its a shootout style though, honestly. They are great at attacking deep, and God is on the sidelines today again.
But they suck on D and we are gonna have our best running game since last time we played them, and probably have some Big Ben bombs in there too.
I think I called this one 31-27 or something in the pick the score thread. So yeah. Thats where I’m feeling.
And wtf, in fantasy, how does MJD get 9 total points when his team gets 37? Thank god for the 49ers DST pick today, got me 30 points and the games not even over yet. Rofl…
tell me about
Both the Pittsburgh Steelers and the HSS Steelers are trying to stop a 2 games skid and bring their record up to 2-2. I’m up by 20 right now, but both teams have a lot of playing time to go.

probably a good decision Ward is more reliable. I don't have that luxury. Instead I had stud Justin Gage

I try not to overload on too many players from one team, but right now I’m starting 3 Steelers: Harrison, Woodley, and either Ward or Holmes.

Last two weeks I won in my league and the Steelers lost. The first week I lost and the Steelers won.
This week I am losing badly.
Let the trend continue.

Some thoughts on the early games
I am usually somewhat of an optimist, but I was a little surprised to see just how badly our previous three opponents played on defense this week.
The Bears, going Detroit gave up 200 yards passing to Stafford in the first half.
The Bengals going against a terrible Cleveland team gave up about the same to Anderson
The Titans made Dave Garrard look like Peyton Manning in the first half.
My point is that after watching all three of these teams play, I am beginning to wonder if the Steelers start is actually worse than I imagined.
i hate to say it, but i was wondering the same thing. to a certain extent it is hard to make some of those extrapolations in the nfl, given the whole “any given sunday” reality. but still, the evidence is starting to pile up, methinks…
...die trying
http://www.agentorangerecords.blogspot.com
Agree with you
It’s hard to extrapolate from week to week – but it does make me worried that the guys that we lost too, don’t seem to be the class of the NFL – and that the success that we had against them doesn’t seem to be unique to us.

On another note
Great to see the Pats take down the Ravens and keep us in striking distance if we win today. Having watched the game the Ravens are a very solid team. Despite playing on the road and making a ton of costly mistakes they really had a great shot at winning it in the end. Mark Clayton dropped an easy catch that should have gotten the first down. A couple plays earlier he had a good chance a tough TD that would have finished it.
A couple of observations after watching that game.
Joe Flacco – unibrow and all – is a man and QB. He played a great game, while being blizted on pretty much every single play. He was able to elude rushers, make plays and stay in the pocket to make tough throws. What’s more the guy just looks like a winner. He never looked, nervous or anxious on the final drive. He delivered a couple of perfect balls to Clayton, that probably should have sealed the game. He reminds me a lot of Ben at this stage of the game.
Ravens offensive play calling was great all game long. From start to finish they made good adjustments on the Pats blitz. Their use of the screen play and draws to keep the Pats of balance was great.
Ray Rice is a baller. Let’s hope we begin to see some development out of Rashard or more playing time out of Moore. Bottom line it helps a ton when you have a back who can both run and catch out of the backfield – especially when you can run a screen to him.
All in all – it will be very tough for the Steelers to beat the Ravens this year unless they step up their game dramatically.
I was not happy with our play calling
We ran the ball 17 times the whole game, when we were dominating on the ground. I like that we are starting to pass more, but 47 passing attempts is not needed with this team. Take away 10 of those attempts and add them to the running game, and that could have been the difference in a win.
Good luck tonight, but not really.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
Interesting
I hear you on the play calling, but I wonder. I think it also looks different to someone who doesn’t watch the team all the time.
It looked to me like you guys took what the pats gave you for the most part. They have a good front 7 and they were stacked on the line in both running and passing plays most of the game.
Considering that you were playing from behind the whole time and that you had a fair amount of success with the pass it seemed like a decent option. As a Steeler fan we are jealous of that fancy looking Screen play that you guys run. We haven’t tried one of those in about four years.
by SteelerBuddha on Oct 4, 2009 7:22 PM EDT up reply actions
"we were dominating on the ground"
ravens were also looking very good through the air. Flacco was very impressive and it seemed Mason would not drop a ball in the early part of the game. You guys were a TD away from beating the pats in their house. Pretty impressive. The pat’s 4th and one conversion on the goal line must have pissed you guys off.
My cousin just offered me free ticket to the Steelers @ Ravens game. I’m not sure I have the stomach for it. Steelers/Ravens live might make my head explode.
"It was an attrition football game and you know we like that."
Yea
I apologize for the past 3 weeks how I blogged. Guess you can say this game brought me back down to earth. Thanks for the compliments and not bashing, even though I would deserve it.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
you really weren't that bad
maybe the appalling behavior of the cinci fans made you guys look better.
I just remember last year I was hesitant to taunt the ravens too much because I knew the would come back, and they did. Even after the second game I didn’t talk schmack because I knew they were dangerous.
Heck, the Steelers were never out of first place in the AFCN under Tomlin’s watch until after week 2 this year. I don’t blame you guys. Plus you have ray lewis as an example to follow.
"It was an attrition football game and you know we like that."
You guys should enjoy it
But as Steeler fans know all too well – success in October is very different from success in January. Doesn’t mean you shouldn’t celebrate a strong start. It’s not like you guys are the Bengals.

Impressive game
I enjoyed that game. It was good football, plain and simple. They earned you some slack as far as your taunting is concerned.
That last pass was on Clayton. It looked to me like he was bracing for the hit before he had the ball in his hands. Flacco looked good all the way through the game.
I heard harbaugh say "bullshit" on national TV.
made my day.

OK....
This is a true Red Zone opportunity. Let’s see if we can punch it in from here. We need TD’s. We need to see if we can operate from inside the 5
Like the other 2?

Only takes one Rivers deep to Jackson like they have done to us in the past
Lets not get complacent, but that was a very very sharp first half

Not really
Usually, we’re scrapping it out until the last seconds of the game. Right now, we look like the 07 Pats… only meaner.
exactly
funny how we’re not ‘back to our old selves’. Not so. We’re much better than we were last year. On offense at least.
