Is there still hope for Sweed?
I know he has dropped two very important passes, passes which would've sealed up both games (Baltimore AFC Championship + Bengals game). He showed that he can work his tail off thoughout the preseason so his work ethic isn't an issue, the issue is dropping passes when he is wide stinking open. I don't think his ability is the question because he has proven to be able to catch tough passes and get wide open at times. I just think it is a mental issue that he needs to get over with and start being more confident with himself. Confidence is a big deal, not being cocky, but being confident in your God given talents and not worrying about dropping wide open catches. He is thinking way too much and I bet you that if he starts having fun, being loose and gets some confidence back that he will make an impact for this team, lets give it some time. What do you all think?

totally Agree
Very few wideouts come roaring out of the gates without making mistakes. He has the ability, the speed, the stature, and yes I’ll say it, the hands too! It’s pure nerves. Once he gets loose and comfortable out there and goes back to playing the game he’s played his whole life lookout. We will have a great WR. Mendy is going for it now it’s Limas’ turn to step it up. I wonder if he’ll play on Sunday? I hope so.
Bring a towel to the game. Black or gold or yellow. If you don't have one buy one, If you can't buy one, dye one!!!
+1
I think Arians needs to get him more involved early for confidence reasons. I mean look at the big catches that he has dropped and the situations involved on those plays. The first ball to come his way in the AFC championship is a 50 yard bomb with the Superbowl in sight. The game against Cincy was a crucial third down late in the game on a double move stretched out in the end zone. Granted there have been some other opportunites missed as well but how about getting him involved and develop his confidence early. Slants, Outs, Screens…get the kid in the game and then call on him for some big things!
These games are not gimmies, but come on Detroit and Cleveland. This is the perfect time for Limas to step up and get involved.
There is.
For all the reasons you listed, it is all mental. I have seen him catch enough difficult passes that I have no doubt the man can catch a football. They probably need to work him into games with shorter routes and gradually let them get longer. I think he has enough talent to merit that and we have enough skill at the WR position to allow for that. If he can get over that he will be deadly.
Yeah I think theres time
Its only what, year 1.25? He’s got time.
They need to give him reps these next two weeks against the scrubs.
I think itd be nice if he could get a TD, RAC style. Maybe that would help the internal pressure.
I agree...........................
he has a great deal of talent, just has the yipps right now. A couple big catches would make a world of difference for him.
I hope he gets a shot here in the next two weeks...
he has the potential to do great things. Hopefully this is a time where he can get his head on straight and get some fire burning within him to go out and be the player the Steelers need him to be. Eye of the tiger…Limas…Eye of the Tiger! – That was lame
Yeah, Sweed's a keeper
If you watched this guy play college ball, there’s absolutely no reason why he can’t be a top pro receiver. He’s beating most of the guys that try to cover him. I think he’s still in awe of being in the pros. Best thing to do is just let him play his way through this.
He needs to continue to get chances
There is alot of talent there, and the guy seems to be hard worker. His problem right now is the Steelers luxury, 3 high quality recievers ahead of him.
13 years and no playoff wins for the Dallas Cowboys... SWEET!
Yeah
Its tough to be in that spot. He’d probably be doing fine in Tennessee or maybe New York or something. But yeah we have a fantastic looking top 3 WR corps now. Old man Ward is gonna break 1000 again, and Holmes should finally. Mike Wallace wont be far behind. Millers having a career year.
And Ben’s on point throwing to all of them. Thats the thing too, Sweed’s been blessed with a great QB to make him look good. He just hasnt sealed the deal.
Don't know.
You either make the plays or you don’t. Big Ben will have confidence in him or not, and throw it to someone else. You can see that BB already has confidence in Wallace.
Just depends if he makes the most of his next opportunity. His clock is ticking.
He is trying too hard. Just like RM, he is going to have to wait until someone gets hurt to see significant playing time.
Agreed. He’s thinking about the catch too much instead of just making the catch. The game still seems a little too big for him. Once he realizes its just football, he’ll be just fine. We should have a hell of a WR corps for a while, even after Ward retires.

Maybe we can trade him to the Jets
They like receivers that drop passes. They just took Edwards off of Cleveland’s hands.

I thought it was just a 3rd rounder with that being a possible 2nd rounder with incentives??

$$$ likely dictates Sweed's departure
Sweed is signed through 2011. He makes $470,000 next year and $550,000 in 2011.
It’s hard to see Pittsburgh offering him much for a new deal. Even if he somehow supplants Wallace and becomes a solid #3 (which seems unlikely) Pittsburgh won’t pay him a lot for that role (see Randle El, Nate Washington). Sweed’s in-game performance, coupled with Wallace’s stellar rookie start, likely means Sweed is a dead man walking. Even with Ward aging and Holmes likely to break somebody else’s bank in free agency.
Somebody, because of his size and speed, will give him more than he’s worth as a free agent for 2012. Sweed just had to be as good as Ernie Mills or Chris Calloway to nail down that #3 spot. Disappointing.
2012
Agree that Steelers probably won’t pay Tonio. Sweed will be restricted and Steelers will tender him if Tonio is going at the same time. Wallace will be starting and Ward’s role will be reduced if he hadn’t already decided to retire on top. Although that’s a lot of crystal ball stuff. Sweed might be delivering mail by then if he can’t catch…It’s gonna be tough/nearly impossible to let him dress on Sunday’s this year(unless injuries), but if he can catch in practice the PS will likely keep him on the roster and give him one more shot next summer.

There is still Hope for Sweed
He’s young and developing still. He most certainly has the size, speed, and get-open abilities. It’s just one thing holding him back – the drops. Granted, it’s the biggest thing.
You can’t blame MT & his offensive coaches for demoting him. Everyone is getting paid big money for wins, and NFL coaching jobs are one of the least stable professions. For the sake of the team and its success, they had to demote Sweed. There are just too many other receivers on the team that can make catches.
But, Sweed is still on the roster for a reason. They will keep working with him, but will put him back in play only when someone else gets injured. With 12 games left to go, that is almost a certainty, so look for Sweed on the field in the near future. If he has taken this lesson to heart, he will remain. If not, he will go.
Man, this fur coat is hot!

Yes, of course he deserves more time...
And it amazes me how few nay-sayers there are after our last “draft bust” in Mendenhall actually played well. I’m not saying anyone above said anything, but there was a semi predominent opinion that both Mendenhall and Sweed were absolute garbage. Mendenhall has a good game, and all of a sudden Sweed has hope too. Human psyche is a funny thing.
Sweed needs to make one big play, in my opinion. If he makes one big catch, in a crucial time or place in a drive, his mental gaffs might be a thing of the past. I think it could change his whole mindset. When the ball is in the air and no one is around, right now (I think) he’s thinking “Oh man don’t screw this up” when he should be thinking “Oh yeah, this is mine”. Once he proves to himself he can make that play, I think him second guessing himself might stop.
Correction
Yes he deserves more time. But he must make more than “one big play.” He needs to make all the big and little plays on a consistent basis. That is his problem right now. He doesn’t.
Kind of like Kordell. The guy had so much talent and athleticism. Yet, he could not throw the ball consistently on target to his receivers. Once Sweed makes the plays consistently he will get a helmet on game day and see the field. As stated above the coaches are under too much pressure to let Sweed practice catching passes during games. They need someone who will consistently catch the ball on the field on game day. When that is Sweed he will play.
When You Run The Ball Good Things Happen
Oh, I agree...
I’m talking more in terms of one big play could get him back on the right track further down the road. I would love to have him in the line up, as a starter, but not until he shows that consistency (and that doesn’t mean consistently dropping passes) you’re talking about.
I said it last week I think. Look at TO and his time in San Fran. He came in with all the physical tools, but couldn’t catch. He made that catch in the playoffs (I think) that won the game and it catapaulted him to a premier talent. He did still drop a few passes from time to time, but he was more consistent than before that one catch. Maybe Sweed would react similarly (as long as he doesn’t do sit up’s in his driveway afterwards of course). Make one big play at the right time, give your confidence a big boost, and the sky is the limit. Keep in mind he missed a good portion of his senior year at Texas, add some drops at big times early on in the pro’s and I think he began to question himself a little. He needs to get those thought out of his head, I think he’ll be okay.

Sweed will get another opportunity
And as his coach said, he better make the most of it. If he comes around, then this O really can be explosive.
One word... YES!
For all the grief and disappointment we as Steeler Nation put on Sweed’s shoulders, the reality is he dropped 2 balls that counted. I think it would be foolish to give up on a 2nd rd pick with so much potential for greatness over 2 dropped passes. Braylon Edwards was known for his dropsies and he just got traded to the Jets for 2 players and 2 picks. I’m saying all this because I was one of the main people screaming that the draft class of ‘08 was one big bust. After Sunday, I’ve come to the conclusion that patience is a virtue we should use in spades when it comes to this class overall. Sweed & Mendy in general. Sweed has been around the organization long enough now. If he wants to be great as bad as half of us want him to be great, we’ll see big things from him in the near future. To put things in perspective, if he actually caught those 2 passes he’d be a household name in Pittsburgh instead of the butt of every dropped pass joke.
Sweed is Done
Why throw to a guy who may drop the ball when you have a rookie (Wallace) who is catching everything thrown his way?
Unless injuries drop WRs like Sweed drops passes, I’ll be really surprised if Sweed gets any kind of a chance this year. Who are you going to sit to get him in there? And how much time will the 5th wide receiver get anyway (which is where is is on the depth chart).
Next year, he has a chance. This year… he should sit and learn because his playing time is over. (Barring injury…)
Personally, I wish they would work Logan in as a receiver or a scat back. I’d love to see that guy get the ball in space.
think about it.
If he can get past this mental block and start catching the uncontested passes, now you can line up Hines, Tone, Wallace, and Sweed and that is about as potent as 4 wide gets. That is why you just don’t give up on him for the rest of the year. When you really think about it, the only thing he has problems with are the deep balls where he is wide open. We already have 2 burners in Tone and Wallace to get deep, why not get him in games with short to medium routes and get him comfortable. There is just too much talent there to throw away.
Reminds me of Plaxico
Before Burress settled down he would drop the easy ones and make the ggreat catches. And very similar to the latest Sweed drop he would leave his feet when he didnt need to as a sort of over-concentration on the catch. He wouldnt always drop them but he didnt get the rac he should have. If Limas stayed on his feet and ran through the catch its a td, no jarring from the turf. It took Burress, getting released by Pittsburgh, and getting passed over(for Derrick Mason) by the Ravens(who he always killed) and having to go back to the Giants humbled and accept their sort of low offer before he woke up and fired on all cylinders for 2 yrs, then shot himself in the leg. Lets hope Limas gets it sooner,he’s got the whole package .
