Is Detroit a gimme?
Been looking at some Lions tape. This is not last year's version of hapless pussycats. Do not let their record fool you. Their schedule to date has been every bit as tough, or tougher, than Steelers' (at NO 4-0, MINN 4-0, WASH 2-2, at CHI 3-1)) and they have played some good football against some good football teams.
If anybody is figuring this is one of those easy games that automatically goes in win column, I'm here hoping that person is not wearing a uniform on Sunday.
Steelers did not lose a single "gimme" game last year. And with 2-2 start, can't afford to this year either.
In the hangover year, I remember the lowest point for me was when they lost to Oakland. Listening to the last few minutes driving home from golf course with an a**hole buddy who hates Steelers. Intercepted at the goal line, 100 yard Raider TD. Laughter from the passenger seat, snide laughter.
Do not ever want to be there again. Ever.
Point is, this is the game where we find out if Steelers have hangover or if they have the fire. What kind of intensity can they bring to a "low fruit" game like this. A game where all the gamblers, the professional yappers, and the fans are going to give it to them. Yeah, I hear it, "Tomlin won't let them..." Well, Tomlin isn't strapping on the pads.
I say this is exactly the kind of game we find out if this team can get to 11 or 12 wins and the playoffs. If Troy can play, he plays. If Parker can play, he plays. None of this taking the week off because we've hit a soft spot on the schedule.
My laughing buddy was mad at me because I wouldn't give him a putt. Okay, it was just a 2 1/2 footer, maybe less. But it was a little downhill, a left to right break. He thought it was a gimme, left his putter head open, and missed it. A**hole.

No and anyone who says yes should be smacked
Weren’t Chicago and Cincy supposed to be gimme games, there were an aweful comments that said they were and look what happened. NFL= no gimme games. It is certainly a game we should win but nothing is for sure.
"Should win" games
have historically been the toughest for the Steelers.
How many of these “gimme” games did we see go down the tubes during the Cowher era? Quite a few as i recall. The kinds of games really can be a big problem if the Steelers would lose.
Provided the team goes in totally prepared and playing hard-nosed football it should be a W.
Should.
Mainly under Cowher
I think unlike Cowher Tomlin is better at preventing us from play down to the opponents level. He will have them ready.
+1
So far we haven’t noticed the Steelers coming out flat in the Tomlin era like they always seemed to for Cowher…
'cept in the first year of the new regime . . .
. . . remember that Jets game? And also the Broncos??

nope..
…no such thing as a gimme on the road in the NFL
Larry Foote and company will be coming out to slay the giant. They lose and nobody cares, they talk about the Steelers getting a win and how they did it, nothing about Detroit.
Detroit already go the monkey off their back, no more nerves and trying to hard to break the streak.
They win, and they sent a message to the world. Last seasons champs beaten by last seasons chumps, we are looking at a team with nothing to lose, and that’s a bad thing.
We are also looking at a team we are way better than. but if we don’t play a good game, they will jump on us.
I don't know, but I'm thinking of going
3 1/2 hour drive. And tickets in the lower endzone are 71.50 on StubHub and that includes All-U-Can-Eat wristbands! All You can eat is worth at least 25 dollars itself.

Steelers don't have gimmees on the road
Pittsburgh annually plays a road clunker, losing a game they should win. They should dominate Detroit, but there are no gimmees away from Pittsburgh for the Steelers.
2008 – 6-15 at Eagles: I know they finished well, but they started 2-3 (including a win over over Pittsburgh) and McNabb and Westbrook were playing hurt/knocked out of the game).
2007 – 16-19 OT at Jets: NY went 4-12 and Pittsburgh played an atrocious game.
2006 – 13-20 at Raiders: Oakland went 2-14. A win would have put Pittsburgh in playoffs over KC.
2005 – 13-16 OT at Ravens: Baltimore was a crappy 6-10.
Even in 2004’s 15-1 season, the one loss was 13-30 at Baltimore. The Ravens were a pedestrian 9-7 that year.
Dont count that 04 game
That was also Tommy (cant say his last name) throwing the ball in that game if you recall. And once Saint Ben stepped in, he played really well. If we had started him, perhaps we’da been the 16-0 guys.
Wasn't there a Texans
game in there somewhere that the Steelers held them to under 100 yards of total offense and still managed to lose by a wide margin? Yep, there it is – 2002. Texans 47 total net yards, Steelers 422 total net yards. Final score 24-6, Texans! GACK!! Texans had a fumble return for a TD and 2 INTs returned for TDs. Steelers ended up with to stupid FGs from Jeff Reed. Texans had 3 1st downs, including 1 by penalty. Steelers had 24!! Nearly doubled ’em up in TOP as well, 39:41 to 20:19.
Anyway, that one was in the Burgh and you are talking about the road. Either way, there are NO GIMME GAMES and the Steelers have plenty of history from which to learn.
Also, I was at that stinkin’ Jets game in the Meadowlands. What an uninspired performance, to say the least.

Why'd you bring up that Oakland game
That one just hurts… Especially since one more win that year put us in the playoffs, and we heated up near the end… Ugh.
But anyway yeah I think Tomlin gets a good grip on the team and keeps us from blowing these totally winnable games.
And having lived in Detroit for a while, I can tell you this much, they gonna lose.
By the way my dad will be front row, near EZ corner. So I’m hoping to see him on tv
It was horrible
I watched that game in a Steeler bar here in Ohio. I’m not sure I’ve seen them play worse (at least, not when they were that much better than the other team). A couple tables of Browns fans absolutely loved it. Not that I blame them.
Ravens are not nice
Hope your boys don’t forget, no touching pretty pretty Carson. Not fair to even scare him by snarling or anything. Pretty, pretty, no touchy.
On the other hand, if you’re going to get 15 yards & a first down, might has well get full value, and nail his ass.
"More than 70 percent of putts left short do not go in."
Would love to
Carson has his number on us, as he is 6-3 all time against the Ravens. But we will get him to the ground. Even if it is after he has released the football.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
Why do you spend so much time here?
No- wait…

I don't think
the Steelers will treat this as a gimme game. I believe they look at this as a game they need to have. If they lose I don’t think it will be because they overlooked it. They probably circled the date on the calendar once Foote went there.
That would be nice
I think he’ll go for close to a hundy and one touch.

Ever since Raiders 06
I havent considered any game a gimmie.
Raiders is one of the games i have scheduled, just to get that memory out of my head
Lions look vulnerable as vulnerable can be, but that doesnt mean the “Any given Sunday” rule doesnt apply
Bleeding Black and Gold.....forever
I dont count that one though
Yes that game was god awful. But two things:
1. It was a Cowher coached game. He let this team play down to opponents. Tomlin seems better about this.
2. Ben stopped a car, and 3 Falcons, with his face that year.
Those two factors essentially allow me to pretend 2006 didn’t happen. Honestly thats how I view it. If Ben doesnt get all screwed up that year, we probably do really well.
Yeah
2006 was rough for sure. Although I dont think Cowher let his teams play down, they never responded to him as well as they do to Tomlin these days. Cowher was an Enforcer, Tomlin is a guide….guidor….guid….you get the point

word
Personally I think Cowher, maybe through his coaching style, just played a softer game on some teams. It always felt like we didnt go for the jugular enough. Like he was content to just do 3 runs and hope for a first, and if it didnt happen, there was always next drive.
At least it seemed that way to me in the later years.
Hard for me to believe we lose in Detroit. With just a 2-2 start, every game must be treated with serious urgency. I do agree however, that the next two games will tell us if we have a real shot at winning #7. If we go out and take care of our business like we should, then Cincy, and Chi were just potholes in the road. If we struggle however, then there are real problems.
13 years and no playoff wins for the Dallas Cowboys... SWEET!
rec'd from me
only because i agree that his is the type of game that can help determine what kind of team this is. a lot like the 06 raiders game. lets take care of business. And I also agree, this Lions team is not all that pathetic. Well coached too. And they’re coming off a bad loss where I think their coach will have them working hard this week.

Agreed
This is a game that will illuminate the ‘character’ our team.
Illuminate the coaching
as much, or more, than the team itself.
We know what this team is, but does the coaching staff have the moxi to keep it from getting flat and over-confident?
OK
I kinda lumped coaches & players together as team in my own mind if not with my wording.
Ok here's my random post of the hour

I just think the Cowgirls are too talented (did I just say that?) for the Cheifs….The Colts will blow out Tennessee, something like 35-14….The Vikings will SPANK the Rams, oh, maybe 33-6….I’d be ecstatic if they all happened like you said tho
