How to beat Denver: A clinic by the Ravens

Final score: Baltimore 30, Denver 7

Star-divide

With excellent effort on both sides of the ball, the Ravens proved that Denver is anything but invincible. Flacco played a steady game and made some clutch throws, but he ended up with only 175 yards passing for the day. But the BroncosBrandon Marshall had a measly 24 yards receiving for the entire game.

The Ravens dominated the line of scrimmage throughout the game and stuffed the Denver ground game. Unable to run the ball, the Broncos couldn't sustain drives or keep Flacco and company off of the field. And the Ravens D put constant pressure on Kyle Orton, who didn't look like anything special out there today.

It's logical to expect a stronger effort from Denver at home against the Steelers, but if the black and gold can implement a similar strategy of stuffing the run and getting after Orton, it could be a long Monday night for the Broncos. Special teams play could also be a key. Mitch Berger isn't the best punter but Eddie Royal is a credible return threat for Denver.

Big game for the Steelers on national TV. This one could be the perfect time to serve notice that the champs are back!

Also what I noticed

Denver seemed to have a real hard time understanding that Baltimore’s secondary is weak. They hardly ever took shots downfield which I felt was foolish. Probably as a result of having so much pressure, Orton couldnt settle down long enough to take a deep throw.

And on offense they just took what they were offered.

The one thing that annoyed me were all the late flags in the game. That ref crew must have been on delay mode or something.

Late flags called on us

The refs yet again tried to ruin this game for us and help the Broncos. I counted 6 idiotic calls on the Ravens by the refs and 1 for the Broncos. Too funny.

by Mr MaLoR on Nov 1, 2009 7:01 PM EST up reply actions

Why do Ravens fans always think the refs care who wins the game? Seriously, I do not get it. You realize their performance is rated post game and they get docked points and ultimately money if they make bad calls. So why would they consciously make decisions that would lead to them making less money? That honestly makes no sense.

The Iron Men of Whining

Mr. MaLoR,
I realize that I am biased, but I have lived in Baltimore for slightly longer than the Ravens and I must say that the Ravens’ streak of complaining about the refs after losses is Ripkenesque. They frequently complain after wins as well, but it is ALWAYS after losses. Occasionally they’ll at least put on a charade of not complaing (“We aren’t going to complain about the officiating on this one… the officiating was terrible but this loss was our fault and we’re not going to complain about the officiating… but it was really bad officiating…”) but usually it is not that subtle. What gives, Oliver Stone?

by Blount Trauma on Nov 1, 2009 8:41 PM EST up reply actions

Of course dude

We all know its just a coincidence that the team that is involved in the most talk of refs messing up is the Ravens. No way they are out after us. Everyone is going to get penalized for tapping Brady’s shoulder and also not get called TWICE today when Denver DB’s had a hand full of jersey on Mason.

Is Joe Flacco the only QB in the league that gets to snap the ball 3 seconds after the play clock expires…or did you get away with a no-call there that helped you beat the Titans last year?

That is Denver's biggest weakness on offense...

They have some great receivers but Kyle Orton does not have the arm to sling it downfield, and the coaches know that. Their plan on offense every week is to run the west coast…screens, short passes, and draw plays. The Steeler’s D don’t have to worry so much about the big plays, just keep those dangerous receivers in front of them and they should be alright.

They will make the playoffs

Colts > Cowboys, there is no comparison there when you look at the rosters.

Other than their running game though, they are a solid team this year. Manning is putting together one of the best years of his career without Harrison. Its pretty interesting to watch.

by John Stephens on Nov 2, 2009 3:29 PM EST up reply actions

My bad, Johnnny

I should have clarified what I meant, the Colts are far, far, far, afr, far better than Dallas. I just meant the part about losing when it matters, that’s where they are similar.

Also, take away Reggie Wayne and the Colts are the Bills. I am shocked that no one ever doubles him or just takes him out of the picture. Ike shut him the F down last year, except for that tipped pass….he will shut him down again if we play them.

by SteelerStuckintheSouth on Nov 2, 2009 3:38 PM EST up reply actions

Not at all

When you have Manning behind center you are a good football team. Without Wayne, they would still be good (even though that is a dumb argument to make, since you don’t just “take someone away”). What Manning does with the ball in his hands is just amazing.

Do I think we are better than them, though? Easily.

We’ll see if the Broncos were flat or exposed as frauds next week. I’ve been saying the Broncos Steelers Ravens will show a lot about these three teams, so far we learned the ratbirds can still ball, and Denver isn’t invincible, let’s see what the Steelers can do to them ponies.

They’re catching a rested Steeler team that’s building momentum as the season progresses. Ben just had an off game and he almost never has two in a row like that. So I’d say the pressure is on Denver.

I don't think Starks has had too much trouble this year

It’s not like Champ wasn’t on the team when the Steelers killed you in the AFC Championship a load of years ago. I don’t think you have anyone that can stick with Mike Wallace. Your little middle of the field reciever corp might get a break without Clark to introduce you to the Madden-like “hit stick”. Blah blah…we throw out names all day. Truth be know Denver has it’s hands full. It’s going to be a good game but I like our chances.

Did you see Max Starks shut down Jared Allen? If you think this is a favorable match-up for you, you’ve already failed.

Holmes or Ward will be covered by Champ

Well sure, he covers one, which leaves the other open. Not really favorable there for you, especially considering our speedy, growing star rookie wide-out Mike Wallace. Then once you throw Heath Miller in there having a career year…Bailey seems to be an after thought.

If the Ravens secondary stopped you and held Marshall to 26 yards…I am not too worried about your pass offense.

Looking at it right now, your biggest advantage is that its at home in a stadium that is mile high so Clark won’t be playing (hopefully).

Thanks for the welcome back.

Hard to type when my mouth was shut by 3 straight losses and I saw that my team actually had flaws in it. (crazy right?)

I still feel that the Broncos may sweep the floor with you guys on MNF. I thought coming into this game that they have a better chance of beating you next week if they lost to us than if they won. I feel like they just would have been happy with 7-0 and gone easy with you because they did not want to get hurt. But now they have gotten a taste of AFC North football and want to get a little revenge. Hopefully, it is against you guys.

I'm convinced

Since the Broncos will “sweep the floor” against the Steelers, I shudder to think about what the mighty 4-3 (soon to be 4-4) Baltimore Ravens are capable of doing to this inferior Steelers team. I’d be surprised if Tomlin even let’s his guys take the field in those three outings against clearly superior opponents. The Broncos and the Ravens have proven that they are the class of the league already this season. While the defending champs are lucky they aren’t 0-7. Can’t wait for the dismembering Josh McDaniels and John Harbaugh have in store for the poorly coached Pittsburgh Steelers in the upcoming weeks. Scary. Seriously.

if you think Baltimore is good

wait til you see the Steelers….lucky for you, this game is in Denver or it would be ugly. The Ravens are great, but they are just a weak version of what we do. We won the SB and got better, they got to the AFC CG and got much, much worse.

Please explain how we got "much, much" worse.

Bart Scott, Jim Leonhard and Rex Ryan? Am I right?

Our offense is one of the best in the league this year and actually scoring more points than you are. A MAJOR improvement from last year’s group who was 28th in passing, now in the top 10. Our secondary took some shots, but I think you are completely out of line to say we got much much worse.

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

Malor, your secondary is much weaker

And you haven’t done anything with this new offense against us yet, have you?

I still think the Ravens, like I said earlier, are the 3rd best team in the AFC. The Steelers, though, are the best in the AFC. We’ve both had our early season hiccups this year, but those are over—as you know, I’m sure. Maybe much, much worse is a bit too much, but would the Ravens of last season lost 3 ina row? I think not. Something is missing over there, and I’m not nearly as worried about Baltimore as I usually am. Be cool though, it’s coming…..Twice.

by SteelerStuckintheSouth on Nov 2, 2009 2:35 PM EST up reply actions

Never as good as you look, never as bad as you look. AFC North teams (read Ravens and Steelers) have a way of stepping up when it’s needed.

Baltimore isn’t going to go away anytime soon. And they are a very different animal that the Steelers, weaker or whatever, we’ll get to find that out.

And you haven’t done anything with this new offense against us yet, have you?

Yes the 2ndary is struggling, but we will get it together. I gaurentee you do not see the same defense the rest of the year that you saw the first six games.

Seriously

There are a number of reasonable fans on this site. I for one am big on Orton because, like Roethlisberger, he finds ways to win games and to me that is the most important attribute of a QB. But that’s where the comparisons end. Roethlisberger is better in nearly every other way imaginable. His career passing numbers are superior and in pretty much all the immeasurable intangibles he is superior.

Orton is a “nice” QB. Ben is on his way to the HOF. I would think somebody of your age, intellect and wisdom would be able to tell the difference. By disputing that fact without a shred of legitimate evidence you seriously lose any chance you might have to be taken seriously on this site, or anywhere for that matter.

If you are going to come over here blowing Orton’s horn, please present some sort of legitimate argument based on factual evidence. I’d love to be “educated” as to how Orton is better than Ben so please enlighten me with some facts or stats to back up your claim. I’d love to hear what you have to offer up on Orton’s behalf. But don’t waste everybody’s time with unsubstantiated, opinionated and baseless drivel. It’s ridiculous.

Let’s be completely honest, shall we. You’re a self admitted Broncos homer and the only legitimate reason why you would take Orton over Roethlisberger is because you have to due to the fact he is currently the Broncos starting QB.

by King Coebra on Nov 2, 2009 2:34 PM EST up reply actions

Ben has shown that trait over several years, Orton? Seriously did you watch him in Chicago? He lost games in Chicago. 6 games don’t counteract all that.

I think Orton is underrated, but not that much. He’ll never be a pro bowler, and he’ll never lead a team to the Super Bowl. He could do it like Dilfer, but he hasn’t shown he can win big games at all.

If you disagree please tell me what big games the guy has won.

Let me see....

When is the last time the Broncos were on top of the NFL? I seem to recall this Denver QB who was big and mobile, with a rifle arm. A guy remarkably similar to Big Ben—even in terms of SB championships won.

Denver isn’t going anywhere with Orton at the controls. People have this silly idea that you just bring in a new QB and suddenly everything is cool. But that short-term strategy has failed miserably in the past for most NFL teams.

By the end of the year, I think you’re gonna have another QB controversy in Colorado.

Ben isn’t Elway, but he has Elways knack for the big game winning drive. That’s the comparison. Ben goes hot and cold, when he’s on he’s as good as Elway, just Elway very rarely wasn’t on.

We compare Ben to Elway because he’s pretty much a poor man’s John Elway. And that is saying a lot for Ben.

Not to encourage you, but ...

Elway was one of the greatest QBs I’ve ever seen.

But Skippy is right: Ben is a lot younger than Elway was when he won his SB rings and Ben already has two. So, discounting the legendary-hero worship in Denver, I certainly expect Ben to compare favorably with John in stats when his playing days are finished. Not taking anything away from Mr. Elway of course.

by Billy52 on Nov 2, 2009 2:47 PM EST reply actions

Fair enough, but...

Ben did not win two Super Bowls ALONE. Let’s give your Defense some credit for Ben’s Super Bowl wins, huh?

John Elway did it with 1/2 the defense Pittsburgh has(d), and an equal offense.

I submit to the court this piece of evidence. Terrell Davis. Now, did John Elway win two Superbowls ALONE, or are we forgetting someone Tom?

John Elway GOT TO the superbowl with half a defense and an equal offense.

He didn’t win it until TD came to town and he had a group of capable WR and a good defense with Atwater and company.

He was the master of the come back, but that was largely due to his second and third quarter mistakes, as well.

That said, he is still one of the greatest QBs of all time.

If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

by Troy Hufford on Nov 2, 2009 3:34 PM EST up reply actions

John didn’t win Super Bowls until his team reached juggernaut status. Not his fault they skipped from not good enough to dominant.

Equal offense? So that O-line was as bad as ours last year? Terrel Davis equals Willie Parker? We have a HoF caliber reciever, but Holmes isn’t even an all-pro. I’ll give the Steelers a + on WR, a tie on TE and Denver a + on RB and OL. To me Denver wins the best offense category. Steelers win on defense, but they weren’t twice as good as Denver’s.

by Phantaskippy on Nov 2, 2009 3:38 PM EST up reply actions

Our O-Line Sucked and Harris is Out

but there’s plenty of time to get Tyler Polumbus ready for next week’s game. The Broncos have their work cut out for them but we can beat the Steelers. I’m disappointed we didn’t really try to go to Marshall, Scheffler, Royal or even Jabar Gaffney. It should be fun, but I’d caution the Steelers from being too overconfident coming off a bye. That was our downfall against the Ravens.

by the Bradfather on Nov 2, 2009 2:53 PM EST reply actions

Brad...

I disagree, I really don’t think we looked past the Ravens…we just got beat, fair and square. I mean they really came to play, and put it to us. They never gave us the opportunity to hit the wideouts, and they pretty much stuffed the run. It was a beatdown.
Now, poor Pittsburgh will get to experience the Wrath of the Broncos. McD will have our team fired up, and ready to play.

Taylor can shut down marshal, no TE’s do well against us when Troy’s healthy, we’ll see how good he is Sunday, The D-Line will get a good test and I expect the LB’s to go crazy on that poor tackle, he’s got his work cut out for him.

Ryan Clark I don’t think will play, I hope he doesn’t. That could be a weakness for us, esp. if Troy is needed to help vs. the run or cover the TE.

The big factor for this game is Orton, you may have some success on the ground, but the Broncos will need Orton to make plays and take care of the ball. I don’t see that happening with the pressure turned up, his track record isn’t so hot in those situations.

Steelers win, and show the AFC still goes through the North.

No, Playoffs are the real Deal

The Steelers and Broncos have an interesting playoff history against each other. In 1997, we ripped your home field advantage in the AFC title game and in 2005, you came to Denver and returned the favor. Yes, the playoffs are where it really matters. Therefore screw Division I-A college football and their jacked-up BCS. I’m just saying that history has shown both the Broncos and Steelers can win on the road in high-stakes playoff games. If I have created an inferiority complex for you, I sincerely apologize. I just hope the Broncos don’t have to go to Pittsburgh in January. A win next Monday would go a long way toward ensuring that.

The Colts kinda remind me of the Braves of the 90's

alot of good individual players and, yeah, they won one, but does anybody really think they can win another one??

I don’t. YOU HAVE TO RUN THE BALL AT SOME POINT, and, as we all know, they can’t. And even with that crowd noise pumped in through the PA system at their fake field (real men play on grass), I don’t think anybody is worried about their home “field” advantage, LOL.

by SteelerStuckintheSouth on Nov 2, 2009 3:29 PM EST reply actions

Home field is always a huge advantage. Especially in the playoffs. What the Steelers did in 2005 for the first time in NFL history was the 1st time for a reason. I don’t know the stats, but I assure you home field advantage in the playoffs is very very lopsided.

Sorry for ranting, but you are just so negative. You’re like Scrooge, every day. Geez man, let the hatred go.

I have no idea what you are talking about. I’m not even sure if I have seen your name around that much. 314 comments, ok so I haven’t. Apparently, you are upset that I disagreed with you because you think Peyton Manning is not a good QB or that I said home field advantage is a big advantage int he playoffs.

I don’t think I have ever dictated anything on here, ever. So I really don’t know where you got those delusions from, but point them out if you think that.

And again I said the argument was dumb, not you. Which it is, “take so and so away” and they are not that good, does not really make sense. Take Tom Brady away and the Pats are not that good. Take Big Ben away and the Steelers don’t win two SBs. Huh?

And the second one I said this thread got stupid because a guy was confidently saying he would rather have Kyle Orton on his team than Ben Roethlisberger.

I was also reading on here everyday for prob a year before signing up, as my old job was extremely busy – I had no time at all to post. Am I less of a man because I only have 314 posts? Wow, sorry.

I don’t mind if you disagree with me at all, Johnny. I respect very much that everyone has their own opinions. I respect yours also.

Sorry for the attack, but this is not the first time we’ve done this. You seem to alweays have smartass things to say. Maybe I just don’t get your sense of humor or something, but it’s definetly not an isolated incident. I’m not trying to be a jerk, just asking you to ease up a bit.

As far as the “take him away” part, I meant double team him, or shift the safeties over more, or different coverages. I am not stupid enough to say take him away, as in taking the guy off the team. You really should have known that, Johnny. Just like the Vikings took Hines and Tone “out of the game”.

I don’t want to argue with you or anyone else. I enjoy a good debate though, and like deabting with you when it is civil. I hope that we don’t have any “bad blood” after this, I like reading your thoughts on things, as you know your stuff. Just be nice, and I don’t mean baby me, or be a jerk while being nice. Yeah, come to think of it ...

We started out talking about how you can beat the Broncos if you stuff their running game and get after the QB. The Ravens showed us how to get this done, even without a spectacular offensive performance. Whether or not the Broncos suck again next Monday, the Steelers are well equipped personnel-wise to beat them in much the same way as Baltimore.

by Billy52 on Nov 2, 2009 3:50 PM EST reply actions

I thought they key to the Ravens win

Was shutting Marshall down. Royal has been a shell of himself from last year and is not much of a worry. That and they put a ton of pressure on Orton, which we are better at than the Ravens…so I don’t see us struggling with that.

wow

Ben had 32 TD passes in one year, Orton has 39 since he came into the league in 2005.

Orton has never had a QB rating OVER 79.6.
Ben has had ONE season UNDER 80.1.

Ben has been in the league one year longer, has two Super Bowl rings, the best winning percentage ever by a QB, has broken numerous franchise records, has had THREE seasons OVER a 98 QB rating (working on his 4th right now), oh, and:
  NFL records
Most regular season wins in a season, rookie QB — 13 (2004) 83
Longest regular season win streak to start a career for a NFL QB — 15 games (won all 13 starts in the 2004 season, won first 2 games of the 2005 season)84
Most wins as a starting quarterback in first five NFL seasons (reg. season only) – 51 (from 2004-2008)32
Highest passer rating, rookie season — 98.1 (2004)85
Highest completion percentage, rookie season — 66.4% (2004)85
Most games with a completion percentage of 80.0% or higher, regular season (min. 10 attempts) — 4 (2007)86
(Tie) Most touchdown passes, Monday Night Football game — 5 (11/5/2007 vs. Baltimore Ravens) 84
First QB to start two Conference Championship games in first two seasons in the NFL (2004 & 2005)84
Youngest starting QB ever to win the Super Bowl (2005; second-youngest QB to play in the Super Bowl, behind Dan Marino)87
Roethlisberger became the second quarterback in NFL history, along with Peyton Manning, to register three perfect passing games during the regular season, and the only quarterback to ever register two perfect passing games in one regular season. 84
Lowest passer rating for a Super Bowl winning QB — 22.6 (Completed 9 of 21 passes for zero touchdowns with two interceptions)88
Tied for most seasons with one or more postseason starts in the first five years in the league since 1960, with four starts (tied with Bernie Kosar, Donovan McNabb, and Eli Manning).89

There are some stats for you.

Ben is far better than Orton. Any questions??

AND

Roethlisberger is the third longest surname on a jersey. Take that, Orton!

Does that take hyphenated words into account, cause I thought he was the longest non-hyphenated. Could be wrong though.
