Driveby Report 10 Nov
The Driveby Report is back by unpopular demand. It's a driveby because it's quick and I spray the bullets randomly. They are for conversation and entertainment, but I inject put my opinion in there as well.
Leading up to this game there was a lot of hype about the Broncos defense. They were as advertised in the first half. However as we learned earlier in the season there are 60 minutes in an NFL game. That secondary that Broncos fame came over here praising and that league sack leader got taken to the wood shed in the second half.
The Steelers defense looked familiar in the second half. They looked more like last year's defense. They also made Kyle Orton look more like last year's Orton. The defense looks like it's getting some momentum. Rest fast my friends it's a short week. Enough of that. On to the driveby.
1. Well I have to give Arians some credit. He actually made some adjustments that made a difference this game. It looks like they adjusted to the various fronts the Broncos gave to confuse the Steeler offense and the surgically removed their spleen and gall bladder. Ryan Clark thanks you.
2. How about some champ Bailey roasted on an open fire? 31 year old Champ Bailey meet 25 year old Santonio Holmes.
3. I fought the law but the law didn't win. Ty Law? He's probably the only player in the league older than Hines Ward (j/k). So it's old man against old man...only one is in shape.
4. Rush-Hard Spin-Den-Haul: If this young man learns to hold the ball higher (Jerome speak to this kid!) and quit moving backwards we have something special here. He scares me to death when he gets in traffic. I also don't like him making mental mistakes all the time (like running out of bounds when you are trying to kill the clock) but that comes in time.....sometimes.
5. If you were in the crowd that didn't like Carter, do you understand what we were saying about Carter. He's no slouch. He's just no Troy. Who is?
6. Keisel the Deisel has an engine that doesn't stop running.
7. I wish I was an oxygen dealer for the sports teams in Denver. By the way it looked like the Broncos were the ones oxygen deprived in this game.
8. There is no better Safety in the league better than Troy Polamalu.
9. Memo to the league if you throw underneath to your back late in the game you might lose a player to extreme punishment. For additional information see Correll Buckhalter and Willis McGahee. Thanks Deebo for picking up Ryan Clarks job, even though you may get fined for that one.
10. Elvis has left the building. All of this talk about Demervil was very interesting. The match up with Starks wasn't. Starks looked like he was pushing a child around. You ain't never caught a rabbit....
11. Pick your poison. The Broncos were not going to let Heath Miller beat them. They just forgot that the Steelers have two Super Bowl MVPs and a super rookie.
12. There was a Sweed sighting! Stats 1 penalty and 1 incomplete pass. I know you want me to say dropped pass but no.
13. Cheerleaders look good in chaps.
14. I still don't understand what they consider holding. I know there's holding every play but not like the holding I saw! Forget I said that I don't gripe about officials.
15. This game could have been a shutout. One dropped INT (broken up by Troy) and a fumble return for TD allowed Denver's scoring.
16. I'm wondering how many boneheads will say the DBs sucked last night. They did what they were schemed to do and adjusted throughout the game. It wasn't a perfect game but good none the less. You can't dink and dunk against this team with Troy playing and not get burned by it.
17. BONUS (randomest): Whoever that was with the bad acne (Broncos fan on TV), bro get some proactive.

My gawd!! Poor dude. I had a dozen or so people over for the game last night and I think a couple of my guests passed out when he flashed over the screen.
In any event, as expected, I don’t have to eat my hat. It was close though. Of the 38 points a couple Denver fans predicted, the Donc’s O got the ‘3’ right.
O2 deficiency – man, did the Donc’s look gassed in the second half! I was loving it. Again, made me think of a couple trolls that claimed the Steelers would never make it at altitude.
Steeler Nation – EFFIN A fellow members. Way to take over yet another stadium and make us all proud. I had chills listening to the post-game wrap-up and hearing a very rowdy chant of HERE WE GO STEELERS HERE WE GO!!!
BB owns Champ Bailey. Looks like he owns the heralded B Dawk, too. Well, maybe this game anyway. Dawkins smoked him in Philly early last season. Ty Law? Please, his day is long gone.
Last and certainly not least, Max Starks is playing out of his mind, too. Aside from laughing his way all the way to the bank, he must get tremendous personal satisfaction from the way he is playing. Is he proving all the naysayers wrong or what? And Kudos in general to the entireO-Line. Ke-mo-eat-u matador move aside, they totally dominated the LOS and allowed BB and the boys to settle in and do what they do.
Game Ball? Wow, team effort – team ball.
The only managing Ben does is he manages to WIN games
Agreed team gets game ball
Starks for Pro Bowl!!

Even Sepulveda
as you point out below! Man, did you get a chance to rewatch that play? Sputnik was like a heat seaking missile coming across the field. Would have been even meaner if he would have de-cleated the guy.

Mitch Berger
After shanking a punt to the 20, Mike Tirico summed it up simply with, “Terrible kick.” The Broncos were idiots for cutting Kern to bring in Berger. Thank goodness for Sepulveda. Who had a nice shove out of bounds on a punt return.
Yeah
Sepulveda showed Reed how to save a TD by being a football player.

Berger is awful
After every terrible kick from him last night, I mumbled “Now they know how we felt last year.” Sepulveda is the man. Field position has just been incredible this year.

That game was speeding!
I don’t know if anybody had one of those hand-held radar guns, but that first half seemed to fly by faster than a quarter!

I noticed that too
Fastest first half I can remember, and we barely had the ball. I remember, from high school ball, the frustration of not touching it much and then talking about it (okay, listening to it) at halftime.

Just a note on Harrison's hit
It was bone-crushing and amazing. However, he is going to get fined I believe. It was definitely helmet to helmet. I don’t think he meant to do it, Buckhalter kind of turned into it. Oh well.
Nice drive-by. Rec’d

Good to see the Drive by is back...
And even better to get a win versus a good team at their place. Denver is a tough team, but they’re not at that level yet. Orton, as said by the Monday Niht crew, is a very smart, ball control QB who has been put into the perfect system for him in Denver. I respect Orton, but I don’t see him winning games (playmaker style) for Denver. He will keep you in games, and normally avoid the errors that cause losses, which coupled with a good defense will win you a lot of games, but not last night.
Did anybody else say immediately after the Ben fumble for six, “This is when Ben takes us down the field for six of our own.” It seems whenever the other team makes a play, and Ben is on the bad side of it (i.e. fumble or interception for points), he comes right back with a demoralizing drive that acts like the stake in Dracula’s heart. That’s our quarterback (cue a crying TO).

I like how he immediately talked to his line
It looked like he was saying “It’s ok Kemo” It’s not all your fault. I take the blame. I need you so you have to let that go. Now let’s go get that 6 back."
or maybe he said “Let’s get that one back and I’ll guy you a sammich.”

I have a lot more interest in this game because I live in Dayton. A team that’s not used to winning has fans that aren’t logical. So I would like them to be quiet. “Who Dey” is never included in an intelligent conversation. lol

Never in my entire life did I think the Bengals could sit one spot below the Steelers in Rush Defense…..but here we are.
Benson vs Rush-Hard take on the #1 and #2 Rush defenses. Who woulda thunk it????
Hope my boyz are up to the task. Good luck to yall (i guess, lol)

Isn’t it always awkward to wish luck to your opponent? You know and they know you don’t mean it. So you either are a jerk and don’t wish it or you lie right to their face. Catch 22.

i like this matchup more. both teams are hitting their stride. both teams are 6-2. and both teams are fully equipped in terms of rosters.
it was nice to win the first one, don’t get me wrong, but i’m anxious to see how we hold up with both teams in midseason form.
Plus, Troy Polamalu’s back, it’s interesting to see the two USC roommates on the field against each other.

And the game is in Pittsburgh, that might help us out a bit.
We will still be down to our 3rd DE, but that’s okay because we have solid back ups there. Hopefully, Timmons will be a go.
Ryan Clark is going to be very, very hungry. He hasn’t eaten up anyone in 3 weeks (by then).

you ready for a good game this weekend??? just my opinion, but i think this afc-north bout looks to be a much better game than that overhyped colts-pats game, just my opinion.
what do you think?
3 yards and a pile of dust
by Hudepohl Dey on Nov 11, 2009 3:11 PM EST up reply actions
What I think
The Steelers D will physically destroy the Bengals offense! Ike Taylor will shut down 85. Benson may get 60 yards, and your offense will score points, but not enough. Your injured WR (I don’t recall his name) being out will hurt you. Our offense plays poorly at times, but comes to life when it is necessary. I see us winning by 14.
Your D will have to respect our passing game, and our offensive line will open holes for Rush-Hard, (who I was tortoise like to warm up to) and he ends up with another 150 yard game.
I like to pull for Marvin Lewis, as I do for just about all former Steelers coaches and players. And I hope he does well on Sunday, with Tomlin doing a bit better.
I miss hearing what Joey Porter would have to say about a game like this. I also miss seeing Jarome Bettis play.
I agree with you that this game, will be the better game for us, as AFC North fans. But Colts vs Pats does sound like one of the better non-Steelers games of the regular season, certainly better than any NFC game.
I think this site should implement a filter, that if all a comment’s entire contents is: “Who Dey”, it should be deleted immediately.
I think more Bengal fan’s should be like you.
Good luck on Sunday.

Come on....Orton?
As the nitwit WR out of CIN would say…“Child please!” Orton is so freakin over-hyped it’s unreal. The dude couldn’t even secure the QB position in Chicago. He’s a safe QB, that’s it. Denver was wrong to get rid of Cutler….Marshall is no longer a deep threat. Did Orton throw anything longer than 10-15 yards last night, if that?
Now that I got that out of my system. Nice post, rec’d. Funny you brought up the acne kid…maybe with the national attention he’ll get a lifetime supply of Stridex or Oxy pads. A few other observations:
1. We definitely need the guy and I’m hoping for a speedy recovery, but we didn’t exactly miss Timmons last night. Fox played very well. Hmmm….nickname in the making? Maybe one more good game…
2. I’m gonna miss FWP. Kudos to Salamander (and O-line, of course).
3. Anyone catch Ben admitting to some of the sacks being his fault? I believe it was his halftime field interview. Thought that was stand-up.
4. I have two fantasy teams. I use rotoworld.com as my source for info, recommended starts, etc. One of their writers, Jason Matheny, had this to say about Polamalu. Clumping him in a group he labeled “dishonorable mention” for week 9 (meaning sit him)….I quote…“All four of these guys are billed as heavy hitters, and none have lived up to their rankings…Polamalu hasn’t been terrible, but I just think he’s overhyped…” This guy historically knows what he’s talking about, but that statement is just redunkulous. Doubt I’ll read his IDP column anymore.
5. All that last night without Aaron Smith, LT and Ryan Clark.
6. Anyone else get nervous when Fat Casey was on the sidelines sucking wind after the first play? Thankfully it didn’t amount to anything serious.
Bad Andy, Good Pizza.
6. Naw I'm used to that lol

Some thoughts:
- You can put a beard on him, but he’s still Kyle Orton
- Agree on the Chaps thing… I still like that the Steelers don’t have cheerleaders, but those chaps almost make me change my mind…
- Deebo will get fined… helmet to helmet, even though I don’t think he meant it.
- Deebo would do it again, even if the fine were doubled.
- Ben seems to have a way of making Champ look like a Chump, doesn’t he? Remember the AFC Championship game in 2005?
- The Steelers Answer to the Dink and Dunk: Hit the receivers and the QB every chance you get. That’s a lot of hits per drive, and most teams can’t take the abuse. Pretty soon the QBs get rabbit feet, and the receivers grow alligator arms…
