Around SBN: Odds On Peyton Manning's Next Home Includes Three Teams

A look to 2005 and back to the present

They arrived at identical records taking different routes.  The Bengals lost their first game on a fluke play.  The Steelers fumbled through a hard fought game with the owner of last year's best record.  Then the Bengals became high profile by beating both previous AFC North Champions and handing the Bears a whipping you might see when an SEC team plays a team from the Sunbelt Conference.  The Steelers seemed to play uninspired football, losing the second and third games of the season on missed field goals, dropped passes and defensive breakdowns late in the games. The loss of Troy Polamalu had a definite affect on the defense.

Now we come to 10.  The Bengals and Steelers play for first in the AFC North.  This game is similar to the 2005 season where the Bengals came into Heinz Field 8-3 fresh off a victory against the Ravens at PBS.  Ironically that victory was good for a season sweep of the Ravens.  The Steelers came in 7-4. Even though they had beaten the Bengals earlier in Cincinnati they came in on a two game losing streak.  Both of those games were away games so coming home was a welcome development.  We all know the rest of the story.

The Steelers made too many mistakes and the Bengals made too many big plays.  Two things that killed the Steelers were the Tabb Perry 94 yard kickoff return that led to an easy Rudi Johnson TD and Ben (second game back from knee injury) being picked off 3 times.  Ben was rusty and the defense was constantly left on the field with their backs against the end zone by turnovers. The Bengals won 38-31 and took a two game lead over the Steelers, but the Steelers went on to bounce them from the playoffs and go on to win the Super Bowl.

That brings us to now.  The Steelers and Bengals come into Heinz 6-2 atop the AFC North.  The Bengals own the tiebreaker at the moment.  Which Steelers team will show up?  Will the team that dominated the Bengals for 3 quarters show up, or will the team that was sleep walking through the 4th quarter show up?  Will both of these teams show up again?  I think the defense will rise again for this game.  We are getting to the point of the season where games start to have that playoff feel.  I still think this team as a whole has not played a complete game yet.  I think they have not yet peaked.
Now here are some points of the game and other stuff.

1. Troy will make a big difference in the red zone.  Even though it was not in the red zone, Cedric Benson scored on a 23 yard run that probably wouldn't have gone the distance or even 5 yards with Troy in there.  The final drive by the Bengals, they were able to work on getting the right match up on linebackers (not going to mention any names) because there was no fear of Troy roaming.  Don't get me wrong Troy doesn't cure cancer but he sure cures what ails this defense.  Stopping Benson is the number one priority.

2. Mike Wallace's presence should help open some holes for Rush-Hard Spin-Den-Haul.  He is going to demand safety help.  Heath Miller's presence is going to demand linebacker/safety discipline and this should open up lanes for Ben to Holmes and Ward.  If Ben is sharp in the midrange passes it's going to be a long day for the Bengals.  The wildcard in the mix is Mendenhall.  With Mendenhall running the ball the Bengals don't match up well.  With him the Steelers can execute a game plan much like the Texans did.  If the line plays like they did last week in the red zone they can just do what they did the first 3 quarters of last game at PBS.  The red zone was the big problem.

3. Don't sleep on how important Chris Henry was to the Bengals.

4. I'm glad they didn't move this game to 4.  As many know, for some reason the Steelers don't play well at 4.

5. I hear Ocho doesn't think the Steelers can Ketchup with him at Heinz so he's bringing the mustard.  I don't know if he can cut the mustard but I'm hoping he gets a loss he can relish.

6. I've been to games in Cincinnati and I've been to games in Pittsburgh.  Pittsburgh by far is much more intimidating to visitors.  At Cincy games you see a good number of people.  When the Steelers come in you see even more people but many of them are wearing Black and Gold.  At Steelers games in Pittsburgh it doesn't matter the team they are playing, There is an insane number of people and all most all are wearing Black and Gold.

7. Now let the discussion begin.

Another good one Arn

Will you be at this game? When the schedule first came out, I didn’t even bother looking at this game for tickets. Though I probably still would not have switched out of the Vikings game, had I “gotten stuck” with tickets for this Sunday’s match up, I’d be pretty pumped. That place is going to be even more rockin’ than it was for the Vikes game, if that’s even possible.

They have started to pull it together. A good sign is they are starting to score on defense again. That means they are starting to enforce their will.

Rounding into shape

“I like” having a couple losses along the way. While teams can learn from wins, it is no doubt much easier to find teaching lessons from a loss. It is easier to be complacent after a win and brush off constructive criticism with a “yeah, well, it didn’t cost us the game.” Obviously not so after a loss.

Having said that, this team appears to be just shy of full stride, which is what one might expect as the second half of the marathon commences. Injuries have been/are becoming somewhat of a factor but Tomlin & Co. have done an outstanding job keeping everyone prepared and feeling like an integral part of the team.

What better place to put the rest of the NFL on warning than this Sunday at home with dominant performance on both sides of the ball over Cincy?

Pressure, pressure and more pressure

Palmer is a good QB, if not great and he has the potential to kill the Steelers with the blend of dinks and dunks and long bombs.

We did not see the prevent D in the last game because the QB was Kyle Orton, which eliminated any threat of the long pass.

I believe if we get an early lead of around 10 points the Steelers win.

They are playing the Redskins-Broncos game on our local channel. It’s always good for a laugh, but the Redskins are beyond bad this year and we’ve already beaten the Broncos. If I didn’t have Directv NFL package, I’d never even get the Steelers game. It’s all Redskins all the time here.

good post Arn

Item #3: I’m really not sure what to make of this non-Henry offense. Personally, i think we’re going to be ok without him, but i could be totally wrong. This year we’ve seen a lot of power-run game, in which Henry is sitting on the bench. Marvin Lewis doesn’t let him on the field cause he can’t block downfield.

I know that the passing game will need to be top notch, and the Henry did a lot of decoy work. Still, the 3-wide, single-TE, single-back set is pretty nice. (that would be Ocho, Coles, Caldwell, Foschi, Leonard).

I’m somewhat in agreement with item #3, but i don’t think were sunk without Chris Henry. Guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Item #4: They’ve flexed the game to Monday Night, since no one really cares about the re-re-debut of Brady Quinn. (oh wait, just kidding, guess i’m just jealous the Browns got a Monday nighter when the Bengals had that HUGE half-game edge in the 08 divisional standings)

Item#5: Cmon Chad, mustard, you can do better than that. The deodorant and the pepto were pretty good, but mustard???

If the Steelers can run the rock,

this game is over. Cincy HAS to stop the run, or their offense will off the field. I’m fairly certain that we can stop Cedric, putting the ball in Carson’s hands and making them one-dimensional.

Without Henry to stretch the field, the secondary gets to unload.

Keys to the Steelers Winning

It’s pretty simple:

1. Can’t allow Benson to gash us up the middle. If our LBs have to move up to protect against the run, Palmer will kill us with slants and crosses over the middle. We just have to keep Ced under 80 yards.

2. We can’t continue to be careless with the ball. We’ve turned the ball over too many times and we’re 2 in +/ ratio. Of the 13 teams who have negative ratios in the NFL, only two – us and the Cardinals – have winning records. That tells you how important turnovers are.

3. No long returns or dumb special teams play. In each of our losses – and even the close games – it’s been our special teams that cost us.

I think that’s it. If we don’t get dinged on those 3 areas, we’ll walk away with a solid “W”.

It’s hard to win when you don’t take care of the ball. I think it actually tells you something about how much better this team is than it has been playing. Minus careless turnovers I think we are looking more dominant than we are right now.

Good overview

I agree with you Arn that we have not yet seen a complete game from the Steelers but we’re moving in that direction. I liked this comment: “With Mendenhall running the ball the Bengals don’t match up well.” Basically, that’s what we saw the first time around when Parker was running the ball well in the first half. He was also wide open for a couple of catches, including one for a TD. The second half, Parker was totally ineffective, 11 carries for 19 yards. Maybe he was suffering from the turf toe injury, but overall in that game he had a typically high number of unproductive runs (10 out of 25 went for two yards or less). Mendenhall owes his teammates a good effort this time around. He wasn’t used on offense in the first game because he had screwed up in practices, and not having him available was a contributing factor to the loss.

I’m not sorry to see Henry out of the lineup. He’s had some big games vs. the Steelers. Andre Caldwell has developed into a pretty good short-range target but overall that group of WR is not going to kill you with their speed, and they have no TE with speed or running back who will make people miss. The key is being physical, smother the workhorse RB and then kill the quarterback, which is what the Steelers are built to do.

by steeler.lifer on Nov 12, 2009 3:35 PM EST reply actions

Can't see the bengals winning...

This team is different than the one from 2005. There Ben was still learning how to play in the big game. We had Bettis on the downside of a glorious career, and Willie Parker who would show flashes of brilliance, but no ability to pound things out consistently.

Our defense, while good, was not spectacular — to a large degree the deficiencies of the defense were hidden by the “Run Early and Run Often” approach to the game that may not have put up big scores, but did suck the air out of the games, and kept them from having to do too much.

Finally, our head coach was a guy who was pretty good, but not great, and who basically played “Marty Ball” with better talent.

The only thing that was a lot better in 2005 was our offensive coordinator — though since he was feuding with our QB, maybe even that was a downside.

In 2005, when we lost to the Bengals, I thought: “The Steelers are done.” You simply cannot be a championship team and lose a game like that. They got hot and went on a run, but things also broke their way. The Colts were looking past us and were caught by surprise by a brilliant defensive attack. But if we play that game ten times, I think we win it four… And, frankly, Ben played above himself throughout the playoffs — especially in Denver. How Whiz got Cowher to let him throw so much early on, I’ll never know…

The 2009 team is much improved. For one thing, we just did it last year, and you cannot underestimate confidence. This version also has a QB who knows who he is, an Offensive line which is growing every day, a Defense that can take over a game, and a coach who is just plain smarter than anyone Pittsburgh has seen in 30 years.

I believe the Steelers show their championship form on Sunday and win this one going away. The downside is that then we come back on the radar — and we always play better when no one gives us a chance. How the Super Bowl champions are not given a chance in some games is beyond me, but I’ve liked the anonymity. As long as the Steeelrs stay a little mad, they should be fine…

I pretty much feel the same way

This is a better team than 2005. I’ve pretty much been telling Bengal fans in the area here that their ride is over. They may have a chance to make the playoffs but the gloves are coming off this week and they will realize they are only the second best in the AFC North. Now they better not play sloppy and lose.

This isn’t the same Cincinnati team either. Passing game might not be as dynamic, but Ced Benson has looked really good and their defense is tougher with Maualuga, Rivers, Joseph and Hall. Although the guy that I think sets up everything on that defense is Peko. It’s like when Kimo was a Bengal and gave Dirt Dawson everything he could handle.

Cincy could absolutely win this game if the Steelers don’t play an outstanding game.

I see it the other way around

Cincy is the one that has to play outstanding.

I take it you meant Dermonti Dawson

Because Dirt Winston retired from the NFL before Kimo graduted high school.

Cincy has looked good

But let’s not get carried away.

Yes, their defense has looked very good when stopping the Cleveland Browns, and the Bears and the Packers. Who doesn’t? (The Bears have had a lot of trouble playing away games, and when Cutler is in self-destruct mode, even the 49ers make beating him look easy…)

Schedules mean a lot… Hell before last week, the Broncos had the number 1 defense in the NFL. They had been stopping the run, and destroying passing games. We saw how long that lasted — two quarters…

The Bengals beating the Ravens last week was impressive — there is no doubt about that. The Baltimore offense has looked good this year. But remember that Flacco is still a newbie and he had to play catch up the whole game. (Ray Rice only ran the ball 12 times…) I don’t think Joe is consistent enough yet to play a whole game where he has to be a gunslinger for the whole game.

However, don’t dismiss the after effects of getting hit for four quarters by the Ravens…

Other than the Ravens, who did they beat? (Yes, I know, they beat us, but they also did that in week 2 with Troy out…) You can’t compare early seasons to now — otherwise you’s have to feel good about the fact that the Broncos, who beat the Bengals, were just manhandled by the Steelers.

I agree with you that the Bengals are not the same Bengals from last year. This is not a gimmie. And, I would feel better if we were not coming off of a Monday night game.

But this is a very big game, and it is at Heinz Field.

Remind me… when was the last time Mike Tomlin’s Steelers lost a big game at home?

Jacksonville Playoffs 2007/8

but this is a different team. I agree with you.

Ironically the last time we were without Aaron Smith

but we did not have as much D-Line depth that year

The Bengals are good, but . . . . .

they still don’t have anywhere near the confidence as a team that the Steelers have. I felt the Steelers mostly dominated the Bengals earlier this year, but we got sloppy at the end and blew it. With a little better performance this time, I think the Steelers win. But I’ll be surprised if the margin is more than 10.

Thanks Arn!

Just wanted to check in and tell you how much I enjoyed the post.

05 was special. I remember when we lost to the Bengals in 05 and they stomped on the TT. The furious 50 crew decided that at 7-5 and inconsistent all we could hope was to win out, make the playoffs and get a chance to pay back Cinci and end their season. If the season ended quick after that we surmised that at least we paid back the Bengals and ended their season. It worked out a little better than that culminating in XL.
