Big Ben vs Carson

If you were to start an NFL franchise and had to pick between Palmer and Big Ben as your staring franchise quarterback, with all biases aside who would you pick? I honestly think Carson has one of the prettiest throws in the league and when healthy and gets in his groove like now he can be one of the premier quarterbacks in the league. He is also more prone to be a reason the Bengals would lose a game and doesn’t manage the game as well as other quarterbacks in his class. Big Ben on the other hand might not be as flashy or your prototypical quarterback but the guy gets it done, when comparing overall records Big Ben is by far and none ahead of Carson. Big Ben has also had a better surrounding cast his whole career with not as much put on his shoulders. I think its a fair question to ask by fans of both teams and each side would have a fair argument. My question is who would you rather have?

You’re asking this question on a Steelers messageboard. What kind of response do you expect to get?

How 'bout Dan Marino?

I’m still shaking my head over the team the Steelers woulda had if they took him.

And let’s face it, Ben has more upside than Palmer, and apparently a better command of his troops.

My heros have always been Steelers...

3 or 4 more rings

they would have had, if marino was on the squad, I dont know if anyone would have been able to beat that steve young 49ers team the chargers went up against but we def. would have had the cowgirls and new england wouldn’t have had to embarrass K. Stewart cause he would still be slash…..

Carson Roethlisberger

Palmer does throw a better deep ball, and Ben wins championships ; )

by PonchoBrew on Nov 12, 2009 1:14 PM EST reply actions

Not even close.

Carson Palmer is a darn good QB, no doubt about it. But it’s not really much of a competition.

First of all, there’s the age difference. Carson Palmer is an oft-injured, 30 year old QB. Roethlisberger is 2 1/2 years younger. Statistically, they’re close, but Ben has the edge. So just on the age/statistics basis, Ben gets the nod.

But anyone who watches the game of football sees that Ben has an intangible quality that all the great QBs have – the ability to find a way to win games. It’s not something that can be taught. And while Carson can certainly help his team to win, Ben finds a way to will his team to win. And that’s what it comes down to. As such, Carson Palmer has yet to win even 1 playoff game, while Ben has been the starting QB of 2 Super Bowl teams.

So you’re asking whether a good, but injury-prone 30 year old QB who hasn’t won a playoff game is comparable to a great 27 year old QB who has 2 Super Bowl rings?

If you need precision

Ben Carson….oh wait he’s got precision but at brain surgery.

Way Different

I don’t mean to fill up your board but, I’m trying to think of it as if I just watched both of them end their college careers at the same time.

At that point i think Carson, a USC, heisman trophy winner, would have to be the obvious pick.

However, in real terms, Big Ben has done a lot more winning and just seems to get it done, therefore, right now, I would take Ben.

It’s hard to say how Carson would have done with a good O-Line Ben seems to have year in year out, and with a better run organization like the Steelers and better supporting cast. It’s really a difficult comparison.

I like both guys, however, as a Bengals fan I grit my teeth every time someone hits Carson, I don’t think you have to do that with Big Ben.

We definitely grit

He takes a lot of unnecessary sacks because he holds on to the ball too long. As he gets older, he’s going to pay for all those hits.

ARRRGGGHH????
It’s hard to say how Carson would have done with a good O-Line Ben seems to have year in year out

You must have just discovered the NFL this year right? The line has been by far the weakest point on this team until this year. Even in 2006/2007 it was a great run blocking line but not that awesome at pass blocking. 2008 it was absymal. 2009 It seems this group has gelled together and are excelling in both areas. Ben takes sacks, that comes with is always – I’m looking for the kill shot – mentality. But to say Ben has had a “good” O-line year and year out is down right wrong.

by tannofsteel84 on Nov 12, 2009 1:58 PM EST up reply actions

i agree, where has this joe been…since faneca left our line has been below average besides this year

by steelerholic on Nov 12, 2009 3:26 PM EST up reply actions

If Palmer played behind our line last year

He would be crippled today and never play football again. The man would not last in the 50 sack offense that Ben played with last year.

by steelerholic on Nov 12, 2009 3:25 PM EST reply actions

Lets be honest!

I like Carson, I feel that he is a top QB in this league…when healthy…do u think he could have won the SB last year with no running game and our )-Line last year?? I would say no! This is not a slight on carson, I as a steeler fan have lots of respect for him..but, Manning or brady couldnt have won with what BB had last year! BB is hard to tackle and makes throws with defenders hanging on him…Brady, manning or palmer couldnt do that!

This post is a joke right?

Would you rather get licked by your golden retriever or Jessica Alba? Would you rather win the lottery or get a poke in the eye with a sharp stick? Would you rather visit the Cincinatti zoo in December or Miami in January? Ben is a winner, Carson Palmer is, well, Carson Palmer.

You can't say that

Carson has been stuck with the Bengals his entire career, while Ben has been with us. You can’t say Carson isn’t a winner because he has been with one of the worst organizations in sports. That’s like saying Nnamdi Asomugha sucks because he plays for the Raiders.

by StoneColdSteel on Nov 12, 2009 11:10 PM EST up reply actions

Fair enough...

….but are you willing to say unequivocally that Palmer, if things aren’t going well, if his teammates aren’t playing well, that he will lift his performance above the norm, above the expected and sustain it until the ship is righted?

I know that about Peyton, Brady, Brees, Big Ben, Asomugha. Heck! I’m learning that about Rogers( he’s taking a beating in Green Bay) but I don’t know that about Palmer.

Ok, just for the sake of trying to kill a few more minutes until Sunday at 1:00…

Are we saying Ben and Carson as we know them today with their years of experience in the league? Well, I’d take Ben because he seems to be unnaturally poised in pressure situations and, when the defense destroys the initial design of a play, he is more capable than any other QB in the league of making a game-changing play. And, although it is no fault of Carson’s, he’s ripped up one knee and missed most of last season with the elbow or whatever problem he had. Ben has had his share of bumps and bruises, but he’s never been out of action for more than a few games at a time.

To be fair to Carson, I’d take him (now that he appears to be fully recovered) over all but Ben, Manning, Brady and, uh yeah, that’s about it. And if we’re rolling back in the ol’ time machine to consider Ben and Carson as potential draft selections, Carson Palmer was a clearly superior prospect to Ben.

Palmar throws like Bradshaw but not the athlete Terry was or BB is

Palmar’s beautiful long throws have often reminded me of Bradshaw. But he is not near ly the athlete Terry was. And Terry, as much as I still love him, was not as good an athlete as Ben. Ben’s ability to throw on the run is evidence of a shortstop’s body control inside that big frame. Montana had that body control, but who else has?? And Ben’s guts and competitive spirits can’t be questioned. It is unfortunate for the Bengals that they get this splendid QB that will only come their way every 30 years, and they are trumped by a team in their division having Ben.
