2010 1st Round Mock Draft: Updated 11/12

There weren't many changes at the top of the order, with the lone exception being the Raiders. Once again I've left off Florida QB Tim Tebow, who I know many people may think he's a sure-fire first rounder. I think many people will be quite happy with who I have mocked to the Steelers as he has steadily become a Steeler nation favorite. As always, I would love to hear any comments you have regarding my mock draft, whether they be positive or negative.

 1. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Ndamukong Suh DT, Nebraska
Congratulations Bucs fans, you finally won a game. Unfortunately, I really can’t see you winning many more. They have needs in multiple areas but especially on the defensive side of the ball. Right now their most pressing need is for someone to collapse the pocket and Suh can do that very well. Suh is the type of 3 down, 2-gap player that is perfect for defensive coordinator Jim Bates’ scheme. Having already drafted the quarterback of the future last year in Josh Freeman, the only other option I could see this pick being is Oklahoma State OT Russell Okung to protect said QB.

2. Cleveland Browns: Eric Berry S, Tennessee
Cleveland needs help everywhere. This franchise is a disaster. In all probability they need a franchise QB, but I don’t think they’ll pull the trigger on that option since they have two QB’s on the roster that are at least adequate. And already having a cornerstone LT in Joe Thomas pretty much means they’re a lock for Berry if he’s available. Berry is pretty much the consensus best player in college football and is a once a decade talent in the mold of Ed Reed. Cleveland has seen first hand what a great safety can do for a franchise with division examples like Reed and Troy Polamalu. In the event that team owner Randy Learner cans coach Mangini at the end of his first season, this will most definitely change to QB. I know it sounds absurd that Learner would fire him after only one season, but what’s one more executive on the payroll who’s no longer on the team. Another reason might be that Learner hires Mike Holmgren to run the team much the way that the Dolphins hired Bill Parcells a couple of years ago, in which case Holmgren won’t feel any attachment to either Brady Quinn or Derek Anderson.

3. St. Louis Rams: Jimmy Clausen QB, Notre Dame
The Rams number one priority this off season will be to find a new Quarterback. There’s no debate about it. In the last two years they have passed on Matt Ryan and Mark Sanchez. Clausen is having a great season and scouts will love the fact that he plays in a pro-style offense under center. If for some reason the Rams management thinks that Marc Bulger has any gas left in the tank they might consider taking the best defensive player available which would be Oklahoma DT Gerald McCoy.

4. Detroit Lions: Russell Okung OT, Oklahoma State
The Lions need a cornerstone LT to protect their 40 million dollar man in Matt Stafford. Okung is the top LT prospect and plays a near-flawless game. He athletic, uses his hands very well, and has quick feet to get out in front of speed rushers. If Okung is off the board at this point, look for the Lions to take the best defensive player available.

5. Kansas City Chiefs: Bruce Campbell OT, Maryland
Matt Cassell needs a LT that will give him enough time to throw the ball down field. KC spent a lot of money on Cassell and it would be nice if they got a return on their investment. It would also allow them to move 2008 1st round pick Brandon Albert to LG, his natural position, since it doesn't seem like he can make it playing on the outside. Campbell is showing strong play this season and is very similar to Okung. With Berry already off the board there are no other elite prospects available at a position of need for the Chiefs to consider with a top 5 pick. In the event that KC decides to skip on Campbell given his injury history, look for them to trade back several spots with someone looking to snatch up Oklahoma DT Gerald McCoy, in which case they may target USC tackle Charles Brown or Florida CB Joe Hayden.

6. Oakland Raiders: Gerald McCoy DT, Oklahoma
This is the first week that I’ve given the Raiders anything other than USC Safety Taylor Mays. Perhaps I’m giving Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis too much credit but McCoy would be a great choice. And to Davis’ delight, McCoy is very fast for a defensive tackle. Mays will stumble out of the top 10 to 15 on draft day if he falls past Oakland. If Oakland comes to its senses and picks a replacement for the failed JaMarcus Russell experiment, Davis will surely go with Washington QB Jake Locker. Locker has the arm strength to throw the deep passes and is very mobile with a 4.6 40 time. And don’t be surprised if Davis goes with Florida DE Carlos Dunlap, whose freakish measurables Davis with also love.

7. Washington Redskins: Sam Bradford QB, Oklahoma
With the way Jason Campbell is continuing his poor play the Redskins(Dan Snyder) will definitely look to replace him, regardless of the fact that Snyder’s impatience with head coaches and coordinators is the reason for it or not. Coach Zorn has been stripped of his play-calling duties and will almost definitely be fired at the end of the season. Regardless of whom Snyder gets to replace him they will want to bring a new QB to start fresh. A better pick would be an OT but Snyder is going to go with a flashy, big name like Bradford. As ESPN has reported, Bradford is having his shoulder operated on by the renowned Dr. James Andrews, who also just happens to be the Redskins team doctor. So Snyder will definitely have the inside track on whether Bradford’s shoulder is going to hold up.

8. Tennessee Titans: Joe Hayden CB, Florida
The Titans are starting to show a glimmer of hope after the most disappointing start a team could have. They have multiple needs, including a QB, but Titans owner Bud Adams still likes Vince Young, especially since he’s won a couple of games, and that is the only reason I see them not going after a QB with this pick. Cornerback is their biggest need and Hayden is the best in this year’s crop. This is a little high for him though, so without any of the other top tier players available it’s a good chance they may trade back a few spots with someone looking to draft USC Tackle Charles Brown or Washington QB Jake Locker. The loss of Albert Haynesworth to free agency has exposed the lack of playmakers in the backfield of this defense so they may also look to trade up for Gerald McCoy. McCoy is the most polished DT prospect and has a quick burst and is great at using his hands to shed blockers.

9. Buffalo Bills: Charles Brown OT, USC
Look for the Bills to replace the gaping hole left by the Jason Peters trade to Philly unless one of the top tier prospects like McCoy fall.  This is a little high for Brown but he’s the only OT prospect left who projects to play on the left side with the struggles of Oklahoma OT Trent Williams and the injuries to Iowa OT Bryan Bulaga.

10. Seattle Seahawks: Jake Locker QB, Washington
Without any top tier left tackle prospects left to replace the aging Walter Jones, look for the Hawks to find an heir apparent to often injured Matt Hasselbeck. Locker comes from a shotgun style offense and will take some time to develop, but he’s a solid player with a strong arm and great mobility. If Charles Brown or Bruce Campbell manages to slip then I would expect the Seahawks to go for one of them and try to find a project QB later in the draft such as Old Miss. QB Jevan Snead or Arkansas’ Ryan Mallett.

11. Jacksonville Jaguars: Dez Bryant WR, Oklahoma State
The Jags need a number one receiver despite being burned by plenty of them in recent years(Matt Jones, Reggie Williams) and find one in Bryant. I know Jags owner Wayne Weaver insists that he will draft Florida QB Tim Tebow if he gets the opportunity but Tebow is not a first round talent and will be available in the second or third round. The recent suspension of Bryant for lying about conversations with Deion Sanders will not hurt is draft stock. He’s got all the intangibles you look for in a receiver and looks a lot like Andre Johnson did when he came out of Miami. Another option here would be a 4-3 defensive end as the Jags make the transition back to after a woeful attempt at using a 3-4 in which case Georgia Tech DE Derrick Morgan would be a good option as his stock is continuing to rise.

12. San Francisco 49ers(via Carolina Panthers): Bryan Bulaga OT, Iowa
The 49ers greatest need is a RT to play opposite Joe Staley. I know this seems high for a right tackle but having a road grader to open up more running lanes for Frank Gore is worth the price. Bulaga has had a down season with injuries and a thyroid condition but would be a perfect fit at RT at the pro level with his work ethic and run-blocking ability. Other options may be Florida CB Joe Hayden if he’s available or Alabama ILB Rolando McClain who is continuing to rise up draft boards although they have a greater need of an OLB.

13. San Francisco 49ers: Taylor Mays S, USC
Having already taken care of the o-line with their previous pick and the emergence of QB Alex Smith the 49ers will turn their attention to the defense. As many who have read my mock draft before already know, I’m not very high on Mays. He plays without discipline, has stiff hips, takes poor angles, and is usually more worried about laying someone out rather than holding his coverage. But there’s no denying his physical attributes, and Coach Singletary is just the right person to teach him how to play. Plus, he’s big and strong enough that he could possibly be moved to OLB where he could truly be a force.

14. Denver Broncos(via Chicago Bears): Rolando McClain ILB, Alabama
The Broncos have very few holes to fill. Look for them to take the best defensive player available. McClain is continuing to rise up draft boards and would be a perfect fit for a 3-4 defense. Another consideration would be a NT like Alabama’s Terrence Cody, be he’s starting to fall due to conditioning concerns.

15. New York Jets: Donovan Warren CB, Michigan
Having found a legitimate down field threat, at least for now, in the trade for Braylon Edwards, the Jets will most likely look for someone to play opposite Darrell Revis. They may also look for defensive line help, especially at DT where Kris Jenkins has had the second season-ending injury of his career. If the Jets decide to go wide receiver look for them to possibly take USC WR Damian Williams, whom QB Mark Sanchez had a great re pore with during his last year in college and will almost assuridy lobby for.

16. Miami Dolphins: Terrence Cody DT, Alabama
With the secondary shored up in last years draft look for the Fins to plug up their defensive front. They have been using aging veterans to plug the gaps for some time and could really use a shot of youth. Alternatives here could be help at linebacker. Team architect Bill Parcells may not look favorably on Codys prior weight issues in which case he may go for a receiver to help the progression of young QB Chad Henne. The best option would be USC WR Damian Williams, who many consider to be the most complete WR in the draft.

17. Green Bay Packers: Trent Williams OT, Oklahoma
Green Bay will take the best tackle available after watching QB Aaron Rogers eat dirt every week. It’s obvious that Rogers is starting to show that the never-ending beatings he’s taken are taking a toll on him. The only other consideration would be to add an OLB to replace Aaron Kampman who’s in the final year of his contact and clearly not comfortable making the switch from DE to OLB.

18. Baltimore Ravens: Jermaine Gresham TE, Oklahoma
Todd Heap hasn't played a 16-game season in years, is getting up there in age, and Gresham is the type of speedy, pass catching TE that is perfect for the development of QB Joe Flacco. Even though he's out with a knee injury for the rest of the year, he will have plenty of time to rehab before the NFL combine. A lot of people will think that the Ravens will draft a CB, especially considering how badly they have been torched through the air, but the Ravens draft on value and if Gresham wouldn’t have hurt his knee this year he would’ve been a top 10-15 pick. Plus there won’t be any other first round CB’s left.

19. Houston Texans: Earl Thomas S, Texas
The Texans need help in multiple areas but the biggest concern is in the secondary, especially if they let the unhappy Dunta Robinson leave via free agency in the offseason. Thomas is only a red shirt sophomore but is having a great year, even though many draft fans are wary of Texas safeties. If not Thomas they may consider GT S Morgan Burnett.

20. San Diego Chargers: Brandon LaFell WR, LSU
Assuming they resign LT Marcus McNeill and in all probability franchise tag Shawn Merriman, they will most likely target someone to play opposite budding wideout Vincent Jackson. Other options may be to take Clemson RB C.J. Spiller since they will most likely lose either Darren Sproles to free agency or cut LaDainian Tomlinson after the season, Bama NT Terrence Cody to replace the aging Jamal Williams, or Georgia Tech DE Derrick Morgan to replace the hole left when Igor Olshansky departed via free agency to the Cowboys.  LaFell fits the mold of a taller wideout that the Chargers prefer.

21. New York Giants: Morgan Burnett S, Georgia Tech
Previously I would’ve thought the Giants would continue to stock pile D-linemen but they have been shredded through the air and could really use a Free Safety to play opposite Kenny Phillips who was lost for the year with a serious injury.

22. Arizona Cardinals: Navorro Bowman OLB, Penn State
Arizona needs LT help bad. They drafted Levi Brown a couple years ago to be a RT when they thought Matt Leinart, a lefty, would be the QB of the future. Well he hasn't been so far and Warner is suffering because of it. Unfortunately, there are no more tackles left with a first round grade. Look for the Cards’ to take the best defensive player available. If Charles Brown manages to slip a few spots back don't be surprised to see the Cards trade up to snag him. They may also reach for an OT like Anthony Davis from Rutgers or Sam Young of Notre Dame.

23. Atlanta Falcons: Travis Lewis OLB, Oklahoma
The Falcons will take the best defensive player available. Previously I had them taking Old Miss. DE Greg Hardy but he has some injury issues and has just been lost for the season. Look for the Falcons to also target a DB if Ras-I Dowling is available or another CB prospect emerges.

24. Philadelphia Eagles: Derrick Morgan DE, Georgia Tech
Without any tackle prospects left to replace the often injured Shawn Andrews, look for the Eagles to take the top DE or Linebacker prospect available.

25. Dallas Cowboys: Damian Williams WR, USC
Even with the sudden appearance of Mile Austin, look for the Cowboys to upgrade their receiving ranks. Williams can also sub for often injured Felix Jones on kick return duties. Other options may be to take the best defensive player available. I could also see them taking an OT to replace the aging Flozell Adams if Trent Williams or Charles Brown falls to them.

26. Seattle Seahawks (via Denver Broncos): C.J. Spiller RB, Clemson
Having taken care of their QB needs earlier in the draft, the Seahawks will turn to RB since there are no more tackles with a first round grade. With concussions in consecutive weeks to Cal RB Jahvid Best, Spiller is the best choice, especially after watching him shred FSU’s defense on a bum leg. He’s probably not quite the complete prospect that Best is, but he's speedy, shifty, and always capable of breaking a long gain. He’s also a great return man.

27. Pittsburgh Steelers: Mike Iupati G, Idaho
For the last few weeks I’ve had the Steelers taking a safety who could replace Ryan Clark given that he’s in the final year of his contract and he’s over 30 years old but I’m positive he’ll take a discount to finish his career in the Burgh. The same goes for Tyrone Carter as well. Plus they will still be able to find a quality Safety in rounds two or three. Last weeks pick of South Florida Safety Nate Allen may even still be available in round two. An option I’m high on is Alabama NT Terrence Cody if he manages to slip, which many think he will do considering his weight issues. He’s managed to lose almost 50 pounds in the last year and keep the weight off so it’s not out of the realm of possibility that he could continue that positive trend into the NFL, especially with the right guidance. Weight issues or not, we’re going to need someone large enough to anchor our defense so our linebackers can continue to flow freely to the opposing QB. Casey Hampton is 32 years old and in the final year of his contract, and with two Super Bowl rings already on his chubby fingers he may seek a big pay day somewhere else.  I’ve seen mock drafts where Cody is a top 10-15 pick and some where he doesn’t even go in the first round. The offensive line has been getting better every week and no longer seems like a dire position of need, but Idaho’s Mike Iupati could fill the one weak point at RG where Darnell Stapleton and Trai Essex are lacking and rookie Craig Urbik didn’t show much during the off season. He’s a big road grader and could possibly slide over and play RT if Willie Colon leaves via free agency. Cornerback could also be another option considering none of the rookies from last year have seemed to distinguish themselves, although it’s definitely too early to tell. To a lesser extent would be to find an eventual replacement for James Farrior. He’s playing at a high level this year but he’s 34 years old and since it takes a couple years for linebackers to learn our system anyway it would be nice to find his replacement now. A lot of people are high on Florida ILB Brandon Spikes, who may be great against the run but is somewhat of a liability in zone coverage. Also don’t be surprised to see the Steelers take C.J. Spiller if he’s available. Willie Parker is most likely not going to be resigned in the off season and Spiller would be a great speedy compliment to Mendenhall’s power. He would also fill what has become a dire position of need over the years as a return man. Stephan Logan has been serviceable but it’s inefficient to have a return specialist on the active roster. One player I would love for the Steelers to take in the second or third round would be Stanford RB Toby Gerhart. Anyone who watched him run over defenders against Oregon has to be infatuated with him. I know we have Frank “The Tank” to develop, but Gerhart has officially become my man-crush.

28. Cincinnati Bengals: Jahvid Best RB, Cal
The Bengals don’t have many real needs at this point, so look for them to take Best, who would be a good compliment to the emerging Cedric Benson. Best has sustained a concussion in consecutive weeks and is now seen as somewhat of an injury risk, be he’s probably the most complete back right now in this draft.

29. New England Patriots: Sergio Kindle DL/OLB, Texas
The Patriots need more youth and depth in their linebacking corps.. They recently resigned the 40 year old Junior Seau. Kindle lines up all over the field for Texas and is the sort of versatile player Belichick loves.

30. Minnesota Vikings: Carlos Dunlap DE, Florida
Anyone who’s read my mock draft before knows I’m not big on Dunlap and I have likened him to Vernon Gholston. But there’s no denying his physical gifts and perhaps the decorated D-linemen of the Vikings can get him to focus. The one weak link is the end spot opposite Jared Allen. They may also consider future replacements for the Williams boys such as Rickey Sapp of Clemson, Jared Odrick from Penn State, or Arthur Jones of Syracuse. Also, don’t be surprised if the Vikings pick a QB like Arkansas’ Ryan Mallett, who’s very raw but has all the qualities you would want in a QB.

31. Indianapolis Colts: Jerry Hughes DE/OLB, TCU
As always, the defense is the weak spot on this team. The Colts will take the best available defensive player.

32. New Orleans Saints: Sean Weatherspoon OLB, Missouri
The Saints will continue to add to an improving defense. Weatherspoon is probably the best OLB suited to play in a base 4-3 defense and would be a great addition to the Saints.

Agreed, Gerhart to me, is the white Brandon Jacobs. He’s the epitome of what old-school Steeler football is.

BTSC Obituaries

OldManSteeler, ominously died two days before Superbowl 123 where the Ravens are set to attempt their 7th superbowl win, facing the Detroit Lions on Sunday. He was 86. His last words are believed to be "MALOR CAN SUCK IT!!!". Like friends and family, we can only guess what this could mean.

Nice

But honestly I dont see any other position being filled than on the line. The could use some depth at T and everyone knows they need a NT of the future. I think if they can get cody they will, Tomlin will whip him into shape. I don’t think they go high on ILB – Fox is playing very well when he gets in the game and I feel confident that he’ll be ready by the time Farrior retire. Also Mundy will be able to step up in clarks position in case of his departure, he may be one year away. But do think they pick up a ILB in the 4th round, Safety in the 2nd round for depth – if nothing else, and 3rd they’d get a T.

What about Issac Redman, he would have been on this team if Logan wouldn’t have made it, I think with Willie gone next year, they upgrade Redman and give him a chance. I think that may lessen the desire for a RB to compliment Mendy. Just my two cents, I dont know much. :)

And..

I don’t think the position matter, O line is a lot harder to learn than D-line therefore it should take longer to adjust to, yea high first round picks are T and get thrown into the heap but those are usually bad teams and they need them immediately. We’re most likely going to be picking somewhere between 25-32 if not 32, so who ever we get is going to be like a high 2nd round value anyway. All I’m saying is how often does a rookie “start quickly” for the steelers? Mike Wallace is having one of the best rookie season ever by a steeler and he still isn’t a starter. You draft the guy with the expectation that he might need a year or two to adjust to the league, at least the steelers do; they don’t force feed a guy in unless they have to ie ( Ben because of injury, Casey – I can’t remember why. Just my opinion nothing more.

Everything you said makes sense, but the fact is that the Steelers are not going to reach for a player. While it’s true that they do need line depth, both offensive and defensive, the Steelers would rather take a top safety or inside linebacker instead of the 5th or 6th best tackle prospect. That’s why they took Evander “Ziggy” Hood in the last draft. Even though we did need youth on the D line, at the time it seemed like our O line was the most glaring weakness. But instead of taking Eben Britton or Phil Loadholt(who turned out to be a steal in the second round by the Vikings) who were rated way behind the four tackles who went ahead of them, they went with Hood who was rated as the 2nd or 3rd best DT prospect.

agree

I thought cody was a 1st round NT, I have no idea who will be the Best player available, i’m sure they will pick that guy. So if it is a S or ILB I will recant my last statement lol.

Positional rankings mean little

The Steelers’ history is to take the best player available, at a position of need. Where that player ranks within his position group means nothing, IMO. If the fifth best tackle prospect is a better prospect than the top-ranked safety or linebacker, then they will take the tackle. Picking Hood over Loadholt was a case of picking the better prospect. I disagree with the choice of Iupati, though I openly admit I have not seen him play. First-round guards are rare to begin with and Iupati plays in a weak conference. He won’t likely be a first-rounder unless he is dominant at the Senior Bowl and flashes some athleticism at the combine. The Steelers invested a third-round pick at guard last year. It’s way too early to dismiss Urbik as a prospect and I thought he played pretty well in preseason, as did the other young linemen like Legursky and Foster. Add in Stapleton and Shipley and there is plenty of young IOL depth. Urbik had no playing time at RT in preseason and most of the talk about him being a tackle prospect is based on the fact he played that position early in his college career, but he is pretty much just a guard and he has said as much. Another first-round RB like Spiller is unlikely, especially if Mendenhall finishes the season strongly, but you never know. The Panthers drafted Stewart despite having Williams, Parker could be done, Moore’s role seems restricted to third-down and situational RB, Redman might NOT be a future Hall of Famer. If the owners add another game or two to the schedule then teams are going to need even more depth at the position.

I suspect this draft will be heavy on the defensive side and there are a number of prospects who, IMO, are better fits for the Steelers’ needs than Iupati, including Spikes, Cameron Heyward, Jared Odrick, Arthur Jones (injured), Jerry Hughes and Nate Allen. The Steelers could use an athlete on the IOL. Among those I’ve seen play who would rate late first-round consideration are C Maurkice Pouncey (better than any of the top ranked centers in last year’s draft IMO) and OTs Anthony Davis and Gabe Carimi. Iupati is a gutsy pick Jay but I don’t think he fits. Makes for a good debate and thank heavens the Steelers FO is a thousand times smarter than any of us.

If all goes the way we’re hoping, Pittsburgh will drafting wayyyyy the hell down the line towards the end of the draft (if not the end of the draft). Cody would be long gone by then. That would be too bad, because I tend to think that D line, particularly NT, is the area of biggest need given the importance of the position to a 3-4 defense, big snack’s age, and the possibility that he’ll leave.

Let’s say for one second that Pittsburgh identifies Cody as a player it would really like to come away with. Would it be a huge sin for the Steelers to trade up? I know this isn’t usual for them, but its also not unheard of. If I’m remembering right, Pittsburgh traded up for Polamalu and Holmes.

by gcn on Nov 12, 2009 11:33 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

It wouldn't be a huge sin but....

the Steelers are only going to make a huge leap forward in the draft for a player if they feel he’s truly special as with Polamalu. They jumped 11 spots from 27th to 16th because they knew Troy was a great player. Historically, they Steelers rarely trade that far ahead because the cost of the extra picks they would have to give up isn’t worth it. With ‘Tonio they only jumped up 7 spots. Right now if you follow my mock draft they would have to jump 11 spots to get “Mount” Cody. As much as I think he would be a great fit for our defense I don’t think he’s a special enough player to warrant what it would take to move up 11 spots to get him. He’s still only going to be a 2 down player. Although if he manages to slip and lasts until around pick 20, then yes we should pull the trigger and move to snatch him up.

Just a few questions

How many players or starters did the SB team lose from 08 team

How many draft picks from 09 make defending champ team

How much room or positions do we realistically have that a rookie pick in 10 draft making the suad

I,m all in for identifying 3-4 players on the 1st day and use whateever late rnd picks to move up or heck collect some extra for 2011 draft sort of what NE has done. The way I look at there isnt that much room to waste late rnders who wont make the team

by steelermafia on Nov 13, 2009 12:41 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Off of the top of my head, the only player we lost from last year was Bryant McFadden who signed as a free agent with the Arizona Cardinals.

All of our picks from the 2009 draft as with the team, although a couple are on the practice squad and not the active roster.

Considering how many players we have that will be free agents at the end of this season, we’ll have a few roster spots available to incoming rookies. Keep in mind though that they will not be starting spots, as it’s a rarity that any rookie start in his first year.

Nate Washington’s departure along with McFadden should give us two extra mid-round compensation picks. It’s unlikely that Leftwich or Marvel Smith will be worth a seventh-round compensatory pick.

B. Leftwich should help comp picks; Rams RB Steven Jackson a Steeler?

B. Leftwich signed a 2-year deal with the Bucs for $7.5M and then started some games for them. His compensation will count in the Steelers favor, along with N. Washington and B. McFadden. I think the Steelers will probably get 2 extra compensatory picks for the loss of those three (Marvel doesn’t count because he never made it out of training camp before he retired).

So, with the Steelers having 9 draft picks again, I propose trading a 2nd and a 5th round pick in next year’s to the Rams for RB Steven Jackson. Jackson, 6’2, 238, wants out of this losing program and the Rams need the draft picks to rebuild what is probably the least talented roster in the NFL.

Jackson will turn 27 years old next July. He is in the prime of his career and would ensure that this team is well-stocked at RB along with Mendy, M. Moore, The Tank, and Isaac Redman for the years to come. He would also be a great fit for the Steelers one-back, 3-WR Offense or can run behind a traditional FB. Think of this being a deal for a young Jerome Bettis all over again. So, you’d not only land Jackson, but you’d also have 7 other draft picks along with the 1 to 2 undrafted gems that our scouting department annually finds as well.

If this deal falls through, then I’m calling Eric Mangini to see what he wants for KR/PR/WR Joshua Cribbs. You’d think Cleveland would be crazy to trade him in the division, but a 2nd and 5th would be awful inviting to them and their rebuilding program.

Thoughts?

I'd love to see SJax in Black and Gold

But it would take more than a second and fifth. It’d probably be more along the lines of a fifth and a third.

I like Jackson, he’s a true warrior, but I can’t imagine Pittsburgh would ever be willing to pay Jackson what he’d want in the long term (admittedly, I don’t know how many years Jackson has left on his current contract). Pittsburgh is strong enough at RB (Mendy and Moore, possibly joined by Redman next year if we lose FWP) that it seems unlikely they’d commit that many dollars to the position.

Cribbs is great, but I don’t see offering a 2nd round pick, much less a 2nd and a 5th, for a guy who’s primarily a returner. Those second round picks are gold (right, Belichick?), and even if Pittsburgh’s picking late in each round there are still great prospects available at regular positions that might be more helpful (linemen, in particular). That’s my prediction: If the Steelers are going to offer high picks in trade then it is going to be for relatively young offensive/defensive linemen who have shown real potential.

Nice dream but...

there is absolutely now way that the Rams would trade Steven Jackson, specifically for all the reasons you listed. It would take 2 first round picks for them to even consider it, and we would still probably have to throw in more to get him.

Cribbs would be a great addition as well but there’s now way that Cleveland would trade him to another team within the division regardless of what we offered for him. He’s steadily become the best returner in the league. For all of his bitching about his contract the fact remains that he signed a long-term extension a couple of years ago so he’s locked into that sinking ship of a franchise whether he likes it or not.

I say

use 3rd round, swap 1st rounders, and throw in a 5 rounder for good measure to trade up for a solid NT in the 1st round. That is the only real need of this team. Maybe we can con Cleveland, Mangina likes to gather draft picks that he’s gonna waste on guys who suck, then we can pick up a top notch NT, I think thats doable.

But nobody’s gonna want to swap their first pick for our 1st rounder at no. 32.
