CincyJungle presents: Ask a Bengals Fan!

Hey there Steelers fans. I know a lot of you probably don't like me much because of that silly trash talk thread, but I think it was good for us all to get some laughs. While I recover from some sort of virus that has incapacitated me for the past week, and with the AFC North's marquee game of the season coming up in just a few days, I figure I would offer you guys the opportunity to ask some questions about the Bengals and get some answers from a fan's point of view.

I'm one of the bloggers over at Cincy Jungle, and I'm sure some of those guys may be over to help address any questions. But, all hatreds aside, I wanted to extend an olive branch and talk some football.

Here's hoping this thread is productive and doesn't spin down the drain too quickly!

Do you have a video of Ochocinco getting his grill knocked out? And do you remember whom you were playing when that happened?

Serious question.

I looked for about 2 minutes

All I found was a video of Chad getting his helmet knocked off against Cleveland.

wasn't it Troy Polamalu who...

… picked up some teeth of Chad Johnson from the ground after his tackle?

Sounds right

Could you imagine Troy in his humble tone of voice saying, “I found your gold teeth Chad. Be carefull out here.”

Tell us about the passing game without that other guy. Can anyone on your team take the top off of coverage? What will the vertical passing game look like?

I'm assuming you mean without Henry.

This sort of depends on who is active this week. Jerome Simpson has barely played since we drafted him ahead of DeSean Jackson a few years ago, but Marvin Lewis seems extraordinarily optimistic that Simpson will be a productive pro. I’m under the impression that the guy is a burner with a lot of athleticism to boot. If he’s active, he may stretch the secondary a couple of times.

Aside from Henry, Chad Ochocinco has always been known as a wide receiver that can stretch the field vertically. Andre Caldwell has shown the capacity to get open in the middle of the field for intermediate (read: 20) seam routes.

Laveranues Coles apparently does not get open down field anymore, and has not been very effective for big YPC numbers, but he’s been decent if not underutilized, outside of some bad drops earlier this year. I like to chalk this up to inexperience with the offense and Carson Palmer, and last week Coles had a much better game. So, I’m hoping that becomes a trend. Laveranues has had an excellent career and this kind of drop off, stat-wise, is probably more indicative of a familiarity issue than of a declining talent issue, although he is getting old.

So, to answer your question, I’m not entirely sure. They like to send Chad deep, but I think the Henry injury’s impact is being blown out of proportion. He is a very good player, but 1/3 of his receiving yards came on just one play. Jerome Simpson, if active, can probably do much of what Henry did from an athletic point of view. They’re very similar physically (Henry is taller and more experienced), but Henry did not play that much before he was injured anyway.

This is a different Bengals offense than we saw in 2005 where the vertical game meant so much. This offense is much better when it establishes a decent running game, utilizes play-action passes, and methodically works down the field. The thing that Carson has done really well this year is spreading the ball around – but no defense has really been able to take Chad out of the game yet, and as a result he’s blowing the other Bengals receivers out of the water statistically.

by jsl413 on Nov 13, 2009 11:43 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I think the vertical game means a lot this game. That’s not necessarily because you need deep plays, but because you need the threat to stretch the steelers coverage and defense. If you don’t have a legitimate threat to keep the safeties from cheating, you can’t win the game.

I don’t believe that the bengals will be able to establish a decent running game. I think that play-action will still work to some extent. However, I can’t see Palmer working his way down the field with safeties cheating into the box and I believe that Timmons has improved substantially since the last time our two teams met.

As far as #85, I think that 5 for 54 yards is pretty much “taking him out of the game”, and despite ocho’s mythological belief in himself, he isn’t being triple covered. I can’t see your offense scoring much this game, but then, I couldn’t have seen it happening last game either. In no way do I believe the steelers have this game won, I’m just trying to figure out how the bengals can attack the steelers defense.

I don’t think they have the cogs for the right machine.

No one thought the Bengals would be able to run on anyone this year.

But Cedric Benson is having a pretty good year against just about everyone. He ran for 76 yards on you guys the last time we played, and the Bengals really gave up on the run in the second half. Benson averaged 4.8 ypc.

The Bengals have been really good for a majority of the year at holding the ball and winning time of possession. It didn’t happen in September in Cincinnati, but I’d expect it to be a little more even this time around.

I think both teams have evolved since the last time they played, and both will be supremely confident. The Bengals offense has been pretty good lately, for the most part, and I – for once – have confidence that Bob Bratkowski will devise a plan to attack the Pittsburgh defense.

He ran for 76 yards on you guys the last time we played, and the Bengals really gave up on the run in the second half.

This is true, but the Bengals scored all but 6 of their points in the final half when they “gave up” on the run.

I believe the steelers have started to improve on defense as the year has gone on, whether that is because of Troy or not I don’t know. Denver could get nothing going on the ground and purple jesus was strangled. Our defensive stats for the last three games are obscene. If the bengals can’t run, I don’t see how they can win. Despite evidence to the contrary, I just can’t see Benson having a good day. Call it historical bias if you will.

The bengals offense and defense has looked very good this year, no beefs there.

I have confidence in Benson – maybe not for a huge game, but to play decently at least. Your defense is good, no doubt, but I expect a close game in all phases.

My turn to ask a question

who is Odom’s back-up, and how much of a drop-off does he bring to the table?

by SteelFever on Nov 13, 2009 11:40 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

We really haven't seen a huge drop-off after Odom was injured.

Antwan was obviously a huge force on the edge, and even in games that he wasn’t getting sacks, he had applied consistent pressure on the quarterback as his size and strength simply blew opposing tackles backwards.

In his place, we’ve seen Jonathan Fanene, Frostee Rucker, and rookie Michael Johnson (linked for your convenience). Flacco was absolutely awful against the Bengals last week, but I think credit has to be given to our corners and defensive front. He was sacked 4 times, and hit 8 more, according to ESPN. With all the praise that Oher and Gaither seem to reel in, I think that’s a fairly impressive performance.

The numbers aren’t staggering, but Cincinnati ranks 7th in the league with 21 sacks, 2 behind the Steelers. Is there some fall off? Certainly. But Rucker and Fanene are big guys (285 and 295, respectively) that really like to get after the quarterback. Rucker is not as good against the run, however, and is an injury liability.

Obviously, much of Odom’s success comes straight out of the dominant performance he had in Green Bay. Losing him certainly hurts because coordinators were scared of him, but I think the backups have performed pretty well in the two games since we lost him. I think a lot of that can probably be attributed to the emergence of Leon Hall and Johnathan Joseph as a premier cornerback duo. Joseph seems to finally have a grasp on the fundamentals, and Leon Hall has been pretty good for a couple of years now. As some Cincinnati journalists have written about, the fact that Zimmer leaves these guys alone on islands somewhat frequently allows him to do a lot more with pressure schemes up front. Zimmer has also adopted some zone blitzing a la Lebeau, although it’s not as useful or prevalent in our base 4-3.

We don’t really concern ourselves with “elite” pass rushers(anymore…). Besides, even if he was playing, he has never recorded a sack against us.

Some can debate how good our line has been in regards to sacks, but one true statement has been that elite pass rushers do not perform against this line (starks).

Gotcha.

Luckily, we’ve had a pretty even contribution to pressure from multiple positions, and not just a premier pass rusher that opens up opportunities for others.

Odom really wasn't that good until this year.

And even this year, that success was mostly against the Packers. He’s a good player, and I hope he recovers so he can contribute in the future, but he might have been overhyped.

what is it about the packers?

Almost all of Jared Allen’s sacks come from just two games against them.

by SteelersVT on Nov 13, 2009 1:58 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Premier pass rushers tend to be guys that go up against Starks, and that has really been a strength-vs-strength battle this year. You’ll see the pressure come from the multiple positions you guys like to bring it from, both in the interior and definitely against Colon on the right.

The problem for the Bengals has been inability to wrap Ben up and bring him down. He’s a big, strong man, and they need to do a better job of not letting him slip away like he always does.

by jsl413 on Nov 13, 2009 12:29 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Sacks shmacks

Ben is going to get sacked. That’s a given. The question is whether or not sacking Ben does any good.

Sacks certainly don’t take Ben’s head out of the game. He’s proven his mental toughness more times than any other QB in recent history.

Sacks don’t generally interrupt the passing game. Ben can throw the intermediate ball better than most. He’s tied at #4 for passes of 20+ yards. He’s also tied at #4 for 40+.

About the only thing that makes me cringe when a sack is about to happen is the possibility of a lost fumble. Our teams are pretty well matched when it comes to forced fumbles, so I figure we’re just as likely to get one as give one up. But it’s about the only thing that seriously concerns me with respect to BB getting sacked.

Which match-ups are you most optimistic about. ie ocho cinco vs. ike taylor.
Which are you most concerned with?

by HereWeGo on Nov 13, 2009 11:43 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Good question!

I personally really like our cornerbacks. I know the numbers say that our passing defense isn’t so hot, but a lot of the yards we’ve given up through the air have come at the end of games on desperation drives by opponents.

For example, Brandon Stokely’s 87-yard fluke touchdown in week one;

92 yards for the Packers on their last two drives in week two;

Ben did a good job against us in week 3;

Derek Anderson had what must be described as a fluke performance against us in week 4, no excuses, these two games the Bengals secondary wasn’t so good;

Flacco was pretty bad in week 5;

Schaub tore us up in week 6, but that is largely attributable to check-downs and missed tackles. At least 100 yards in that game were a result of missed tackles on Slaton or Johnson;

Jay Cutler put together a yardage-heavy second half in week 8, but that was after they were down 4-5 scores. Understandably, the Bengals defensive playcalling probably let up a little.

Last week, Baltimore tacked on 35 yards on a dump-off on the last play of the game.

So, I think our pass defense is much better than it’s appeared on paper. I like our corners in this one, especially since rookie CB Morgan Trent has been much better lately, as has Chris Crocker, I feel a bit better about the Mike Wallace match up.

I’m pretty concerned with our rush defense, if Keith Rivers is absent (hurt his calf last week), and probably a bit concerned with our pass rush against a much-improved Steeler offensive line. I think I’m cautiously optimistic about the Bengals offensive line vs. the Steelers front 7/8, just because we’ve played really well against the 3-4 this year, and this is one of the most-improved units in the league this year. Andre Smith might even play this week!

I think Troy being back in that defensive secondary will make things more difficult for our WR, but this game will be decided in the trenches and in the running game. Which team slows the oppositions’ run enough to eliminate the play-action threat?

Sorry if that’s a bit rambly. In short: I like our CB vs your WR. I don’t like our run D if Rivers is out, and I’m not particularly optimistic about the pass rush.

In rivalry games like this, you can throw stats and history out the window. Records don’t matter. They level of execution and intensity is all that matters in a game like this.

As a former athlete, I will always consider rivalry games to be separate from non-rivalry games. Sure, you gameplan etc…as usual, but there’s an added element in rivalry games that’s not quantifiable, that can’t be predicted or prepared for. And that’s why this game is, as you said, unpredictable.

How do you see

the battle of the trenches? In my opinion, the Steelers o-line has vastly improved and gained a lot of confidence since the first meeting. Is the Bengals d-line stout enough to stand up? Also if I had to make a prediction, I see Ben having a big day with play action passes. Steelers 28-17. What do you think?

by BubbyBrister6 on Nov 13, 2009 11:57 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I think both offensive lines are good.

This is pretty hard for me to predict. The Bengals have been pretty decent against 3-4 defenses this year, and we’ve struggled more with 4-3 fronts. Obviously, Lebeau is a great coach and puts together some really difficult blitzes. Big Ben likes to hold onto the ball too long. I expect both quarterbacks will be sacked a couple of times.

I think play-action will have a lot to do with this game too. It’ll depend on who gets a running game going. We both have top-ranked rush defenses (1 and 2), but neither of us have played particularly adept rushing offenses.

Is there a question in there? :)

Also, if I recall correctly, didn’t you promise a bunch of people you’d take your top off if the Steelers lost to the Bengals earlier this year? :P

All jokes aside, I don’t think you missed much without Mendenhall earlier this year. Willy has always been good against the Bengals. Sweed sucks – sorry. Troy not being in obviously makes an impact, but it was your offense that failed to put the Bengals away in the second half. Much like the playoff game in 2005, Steelers fans said that Carson wouldn’t have made a difference in the game because the defense sucked it up in the second half. Well, the inverse applies to the first meeting between these teams in 2009.

Great post - appreciate the format and the time you have put in to it.

I have a general question about your O-line.

People have been very high on the Bengals Offensive Line. Can you tell us a bit about this group and the current level they are playing at? What do you see as their main strengths and weaknesses?

by SteelerBuddha on Nov 13, 2009 12:38 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Sure :)

The Bengals offensive line has struggled mightily since 2005 and/or since Center Rich Braham was replaced by Eric “the awful” Ghiacek (I can’t even spell his name). Last year was the last we’d see of that awful center, thank god, and his replacement has made all the difference. Kyle Cook has been hugely impressive at Center for the Bengals. Andrew Whitworth has been steady and quite excellent at the LT position. Evan Mathis, who will probably be replaced by Nate Livings this week after hurting his ankle against Baltimore, has also performed admirably at LG.

The left side of the line has been better than the right, at least in the running game. Benson is averaging almost 2 more yards per carry to that side behind Whitworth and Mathis. The Bengals also like to use an unbalanced line with 3 tackles on one side, and two TE or a TE and G on the other side a couple of times a game.

The right side of the line is currently led by RT Dennis Roland, backed up by first round behemoth Andre Smith, who should be getting into a game any time now, and consistent veteran RG Bobbie Williams. These guys have been pretty good in pass protection, but as I mentioned, not overwhelming on rushing plays.

Carson has been sacked only 11 times so far this year. That’s the same number of sacks he’d endured at this point in the 2005 playoff campaign.

This is a smart, cohesive offensive line. There is a very tight human bond between these guys, as they spend a lot of time together in players-only meetings, at dinners with each others families, and on the field. They have the intangibles—football IQ, trust, recognition—and the physical traits—big, strong, nasty—needed to be effective in the AFC North.

All the credit in the world to Whitworth for making the move to LT, Livings and Mathis for stepping up at Guard, and Kyle Cook for being the smart, blocking-scheme savvy center we’ve been missing since Richie Braham departed.

I'm pretty excited.

When a team spends a high round pick on an offensive lineman, that pick usually works out. I think Andre is a beast of a runblocker that can add some balance to our rushing attack. I don’t know if he’ll be active this weekend, but he may be around for some of the unbalanced line looks I talked about.

He probably won’t start this week, but he might break into that role against some of the crummy teams we play in the immediate future.

The only part of your D we haven't asked about...

Is your linebacking core. How do they matchup in coverage? How have TE’s done against them so far this year? I agree with you about your DB’s, I think this may be a good game for Heath, something in the 5-8 catch range, with 100+ yards as a possibility. I doubt you agree, but is it realistic?

A couple of questions

Who will cover Mike Wallace and can they keep up with his blazing speed?

How do you think the impact of Rashard Mendenhall playing Cincy for the first time will be different than when Willie Parker played in the last game? (I believe Willie had 93 yards)

Will the bengals’ offense change their game plan now that Troy is in the lineup?

Do you think Palmer will try to pick on William Gay?

by tannofsteel84 on Nov 13, 2009 1:55 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Good questions.

Wallace will probably draw a little bit of everyone. I figure Joseph and Trent, with safety help every now and then, will be matched up with the speedy Wallace.

I don’t think the Bengals defense cares what RB it’s facing. Mendenhall is a good, strong back, but I think the Bengals are more vulnerable to the speed back that can run around and away from, rather than through tackles.

I think all coordinators gameplan for Troy. I don’t think it will change the overall offensive philosophy, though.

Perhaps. I don’t know enough about those tendencies, but I’ve seen Palmer pick on weaker DBs this year. He’s not afraid to make any throw regardless of who is in coverage.

by jsl413 on Nov 13, 2009 2:00 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I'm thinking it's going to be pick your poison

Either you commit your safety to help with Wallace or help with the run. You can commit your Linebackers, but you have think about Heath since you safety is tied up. Now you are going to be going man against Holmes and you are leaving the middle open for Ward. So, do you make yourself succeptable to the play action pass, draw or go man on Wallace?

Probably more of the man with Holmes and Ward.

Zimmer has expressed confidence in leaving Hall and Joseph on islands.

Same gameplan as earlier this year

Holmes was shut down by Hall. 1 catch, 18 yards.

Wallace was matched up with a weaker corner, yes.

So.. if the same happens, Wallace may have another decent day. But we know who he is now.

It wasn't rocket science

Hmmm Holmes is open for 5 but Wallace is open for 20. You cover Wallace then Holmes get sthe ball.

coo

Mendenhall has some speed too. He has a good combo of both. It will be interesting to see what he can do in light of Willie’s performance, of course we are hoping he tops Willie and get in triple digits.

Orton went hunting for Gay (no pun intended) although Gay was matched up with the very speedy Eddie Royal, which of said speed can be used against Gay since he doesn’t have much speed, L. coles I don’t see as that speedy guy like Royal, am I right?

by tannofsteel84 on Nov 13, 2009 2:12 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Coles isn't as fast as he used to be.

He’s a possession guy. I’d be more worried about Ocho and Caldwell.

by jsl413 on Nov 13, 2009 2:14 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Cool

Then I’m not worried about Gay, I’m not worried about Ocho either, steelers usually do a good job of limiting his impact (although he is good Ike is good also). Caldwell caught the winning TD on us last time and well I’m not too confident in Townsend, so thats who I’d worry about for a sneaky TD somewhere.

i’ll just say this…..Willie Parker has this mojo against the Bengals. Seriously, what has he done this year besides that first half in Week 3??? It’s so damn frustrating for us to watch any sort of promising Bengal defenders look like deer in the headlights when Parker gets the ball.

Who knows, maybe Tomlin will play him and we won’t be able to stop him…..

There’s been some rehash of the game in ’05 when Tab Perry had a huge game on kick returns to really set up the Bengals win in Pittsburgh that year. Is the kick or punt return game expected to be as much of a threat on Sunday? Any struggles for the Bengals in coverage on special teams?

by pghnorthside on Nov 13, 2009 2:20 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Bengals kick coverage has been great.

Kick off returns have been lackluster. Punt returns have been pretty great – Quan Cosby is 5th (I think) in the league in punt return average, and is a threat to break a big one.

The only other problem, Brad St. Louis, has been addressed.

Quan Cosby

has ripped off a few nice punt returns (60 yards was his best). Caldwell got across the 50 one time on a KOR, but barely.

They got beat up by Cribbs, but they were playing that game short handed. (resting starters the week after the trench fight with the Sitllers). Since then, they’ve shutdown the likes of Hester, Johnny Knoxville, and Lardarius Webb. Even in the loss to the Texans, Jacoby Jones and Andre Davis didn’t get much.

Stefan Logan is pretty good. The bengals will have their hands full

We should be

Ok when it comes to special teams, the only time we let teams return anything on kickoffs is when anthony madison and andre frazier was out those two games with injuries, their special teams beast, now they’re back in there and should be solid.

There is a drop-off. Hopefully, it’s not too significant. Backup LB Brandon Johnson has seen a lot of PT already this year.

Roy Williams

Another post on this site says RW has been placed on IR for the year. What impact do you expect his absence having on the Bengals secondary?

a positive one

you all know that he’s a liability in pass coverage. Ndukwe is much faster, a sure tackler, and not bad hitter either.

in all seriousness, Roy Williams was our D-Coordinators boy going back to their days in Dallas. Therefore Roy kind of stole Ndukwe’s starting job.

I remember

i peeked at one episode of hard knocks and remember them talking about that very position how it was so close and they didnt know who would get it, I dont expect much drop off, maybe in run support but the dude will make the most of his opportunity

by tannofsteel84 on Nov 13, 2009 3:15 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

honestly, i’m more worried about Rivers being out. obviously there’s no need to worry about Roy now. But i can’t wait for Rivers to get back. He’s been excellent in run support and TE coverage. His void will be filled by a tandem of Rashad Jeanty (a tough nosed run stopper) and Brandon Johnson (a rangy LB that does nicely blitzing and dropping into zone coverage.) Probably more Johnson since he’s the #2 WILL. Jeanty is actually Maualuga’s backup. Hopefully were not too depleted….

I just read

that the Steelers have given up 6 TDs when the Defense was not out on the field. For all you non-math majors out there that’s a total of 42 points (including PAA). If you remove that total from 139 overall points allowed, thats 97 points given up by the D or 12.12 PPG.

Now, I didn’t go through the top 5 teams in front of the Steelers and I’m sure each has given up a non-Defensive TD or more, but, 12.12 PPG would be good enough for first overall.

If I have some time, I’ll look up the numbers for the teams ahead of the Steelers.

As far as I know, Yahoo sports only counts points against defense

in their fantasy “points allowed” column. It also includes PAT. Says the Steelers have given up 121 points (i.e. 3 DTD against to make up for that 18 point difference), and the Bengals have given up 123 points (2 DTD against).

The top few in point allowed by defense, including PAT (on DTD against):
1. NE 103
2. Indy 108
3. NYJ 110
4. Den 118
5. Pittsburgh 121
6. Cincinnati 123

Troy Polamalu is back this game

Our defense is totally different with Clark/Polamalu as the safety tandem rather than the Clark/Carter duo you faced last time around.

Do you think your offense will be as effective as last time? What do you expect your team to do to counter Troy? Because you know both our Run and Pass defense is better with #43 on the field

He’s not jealous. He’s just sharing Cincy’s Troy fantasy. I guess by living in Ohio he needs a closer 3rd party to role play for him. I don’t know but I think that just may be it. Tough to understand Jackovasaureses sometimes.
