Around SBN: Dissecting Nick Diaz's Positive Drug Test

8 games in a row

They keep stats for everything these days, but I suspect the Steelers have accomplished a first the eight games.

Bengals - Int return for a TD in a 23-20 loss

Chargers - Fumble return for a TD in a 38-28 win

Lions - Int return for a TD in a 28-20 win

Browns - KO return for a TD in a 27-14 win

Vikings - KO return for a TD in a 27-17 win

Broncos - Fumble return for a TD in a 28-10 win

Bengals - KO return for a TD in an 18-12 loss.

Steelers - KO return for a TD in an OT 27-24 loss.

Returns for TDs in eight straight games. The offense and special teams have to stop making these mistakes. Pittsburgh outscores Cincy and KC in those three losses without the return gaffes.

WOW!!!!!

I didn’t realize that, Holy Sh**. Its a wonder were 6-3 right now. Thats just not gonna cut it if we plan on doing anything in the Playoffs. We gotta get that fixed, and fixed now. We’re getting down to the crucial part of the season, and thats just not gonna get it done. We need to thank the football god’s that were still in relatively good shape and get things turned around. On the flip side, when we do get this corrected we’re gonna be an even more dangerous team. You think anyone’s gonna wanna face us come late December-early January. I doubt it, It’s crunch time Boy’s. Time to get to work and get on a roll again.

That's a testament to how good our D is.

If our defense is just average, we’re probably sitting 5-4 or 4-5 right now. Here’s hopin Polamalu gets back quickly.

Special teams are killing us. Short kicks. Poor coverage. Not to mention the fake punt for a 1st down earlier in the year

So your saying

Don’t allow non offensive TD’s agains good teams or you’ll lose.
Send this to Tomlin for the bulletin board in the locker room.

Ho ho ho

No, I’m saying seven straight games giving up a return touchdown is quite possibly something that’s never happened before. I’ve not aware of it in thirty-plus years of watching football.

But maybe you are a football savant and know of this happening before….

I was just stating the obvious.

You can’t allow good teams return TD’s and expect to beat them.
No special football knoledge here.

Our Special Teams defense

Is atrocious

Anyone else thinking cutting Anthony Madison was a bad idea?

Agree with your post

Besides pathetic play calling in the Red Zone, you’re right that offensive and special teams giveaways have been absolutely rampant this season. They’re the main reasons we’ve got 3 losses.

And

Santonio’s dropped TD in the Bears game, and this latest Cincy game doesn’t exactly help

Killing us ...

seems a bit of a stretch when 5 of the 7 games were wins. And did the KO return this past weekend really kill us? If my memory serves correctly, that TD put us down 6-3 in the 1st Quarter … 45 minutes at least to cover 3 point deficit and build a winnable lead. I am certainly not saying that special teams should just cast this aside as a non-issue, but I think the “stats” show that this has not been a warstopper.

post script ...

Steelers tie Cincy this weekend without the special teams gaffe.

allowing st tds does kill us. It destroys morale and when it happens on an almost regular basis, the phsycological effect can snowball. No team expects to give up pts off st and to and it speaks to how good we are that we have been able to salvage wins despite giving up those points. We can’t continue to do that however.

Really?

I give these guys more credit to be able to man up and say “damn, that KO return hurt, but we’re only down 6-3 in the 1st Qtr.” I mean, how does one look at it and say “Geez Louise, we just got done done kicking the Bengals ass to get that three point lead and now it’s gone. What to do, what to do?” Now, giving up ST TD with time running out, putting the team in a two or three score deficit … that’s a warstopper. Down 6-3 in the 1st Qtr is only a minor inconvenience. For the last several years, the Steelers have given up so many ST TDs that I always consider the team down 7-0 before they leave the locker room. It’s actually good from my mental perspective; certainly makes it easy to suck one up when I see it happen. I know the TV talking heads always make them out to be devastating, the radio guys did this weekend. Much ado about nothing depending on the situation. Agree to disagree.

Still stretching it?

Three losses, by less than a TD, where the Steelers gave away seven free points. Make the other teams’ offense earn those points, and maybe Pittsburgh is playing for seeding instead of battling for a wild card.
