Ben looked lost against the Bengals

One of my problems with Ben's play at QB has been how much of the game he appears to leave to chance.

Star-divide

Ben Roethlisberger is a very, very good QB. He might even be great. Some day. But today is not the day, and neither was last Sunday.

Throughout the game he looked confused, failed to make reads, missed open receivers, made bad throws and generally failed to show any grasp of the fundamentals of his position. He relies too much on pump-fakes, and on creating "something from nothing". Maybe he's buying into his own reputation, or maybe he's just not a great technical QB. In my opinion, it's the latter.

Everyone who watches pro football knows how much extra time, extra effort and study that the stat-monsters like Brees, Brady and Manning put into their craft. It shows every week on the field, in all the little things they get right. Those QBs often complete passes to the widest-open WRs, wideouts who happen to be their third- or fourth-look on the play. Ben fails at that too often for my tastes.

How many times have we seen the great QBs make easy pitch-and-catch throws to WRs who run deep routes? How often have our own Steelers been beaten by Brady or Manning making quick passes to WRs who run intricate routes, passes in which the ball was almost to the receiver *before* the wideout makes his break? Ben too often misses those throws, or throws INTs in those situations.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I get the impression that Ben relies far more on his "talent" than he does his technical proficiency and knowledge of the game and of defensive tendencies. In short- I personally don't think Ben puts in all the extra effort that those QBs ranked above him do.

The offensive line WAS a factor on Sunday against the Bengals. So were the WRs. And, as usual so was the STs. A lot of other things contributed to that loss too. Unfortunately, I think that if Ben Roethlisberger had invested the time and effort into detailed perfection of his craft that he would have been far better prepared to overcome being "off" or having "bad timing" etc. He would have been able to overcome "bad luck" with SKILL.

As he gets older Ben will lose some of the incredible physical gifts he uses to win games. As that happens, he'll need to learn how to be a better technical QB, making more accurate reads and throws to "hot route" receivers. Most especially, he will need to be able to be a step ahead of opposing defenses, like Manning, Brees, or Brady.

If not, he'll slowly digress into a shadow of his former glory and will eventually be replaced by a younger, or better, QB.

IF he starts investing that extra effort now, he could easily be one of the greatest ever. If not, he risks fading into history as "pretty good".

he is in the top 5 QB's in the league now

i’ll take him and like you hope he gets better every year just like Manning, Brady and Brees have each year throughout their careers. Manning and Brady are sure fire first ballot hall of famers and Brees number the last 3 years are better than both of them.

In 9 games this year, Ben has been pretty good i at least 6 of those and the 7th he wasn’t bad either. He has not played great vs. the Vikings or the Bengals the last few weeks but we aren’t talking about the scrubs of the league, your talking about two teams that are winning their divisions and both have also had good offense to go along with their good defenses.

I don’t think Ben will suck again this year like he did Sunday, he may not throw for 300 yards every game but he won’t lay another egg like Sunday. He’s permitted to have “a bad day at the office” it happens and those days have become fewer and further between each year.

I think he’ll play well down the stretch, hopefully we can cover kicks a litlle better as well.

I can't blame Ben for being confused

Some of the play calling confused me as well

Funny I was talking to my boyfriend about the same thing last night

I heard somewhere that he does not pick up a football in the off-season. I also believe that he relies too much on his physical gifts. I think that it is time that he becomes a student of the game. I do feel pangs of envy when I see Brady, Brees, Rivers, Palmer and Manning work the field.

So has every QB they faced and beat

Their D-Line is extremely underrated and maybe it is time to admit that they are the best in the AFC North right now. Or, maybe not…..

Ben reminds me of Brett Favre, which isn’t really a bad comparison. The other QB’s you mention, the technical ones, cannot always improvise the way BB can. I like BB’s style of back yard ball, but he also gives me the most stress as a fan.

The guy has won two Super Bowls, he consistently comes up big in important spots, and is reaching a Brady/Manning-like level of being a guy that 11-, 12-win teams are built around on a year-in, year-out basis.

He’s not the prettiest, the most text book, or the most statistically impressive. I would not pick him for a fantasy team. But if he’s on the sideline, everyone else will believe victory is possible regardless of circumstance. That’s a powerful, proven presence that cannot ignored. Therefore, I’m glad to have him as our QB.

I think he’ll be pretty impressive for some years.

However – I could stand a bit less stress as a fan. Please Ben, less stress for me….

Ben is a great QB, but he's not Manning or Brady

Manning and Brady will go down as players that changed the position, altered the game, etc…they’re legends. We say Ben is in the top 5 QB’s now, Manning/Brady are possibly top 5 QB’s ever. So, to compare Ben to those two is unfair.

Also, lets give credit where credit is due: the Bengals, especially their defense, are vastly improved. They’re a helluva team. They straight up beat us on Sunday (as opposed to us letting one get away, as I feel was the case the first time we played). Maybe Ben looked so bad on Sunday because Cincy’s defense was that good. They’re coverage was outstanding, the best we’ve seen this year. And, the fact that they were pressuring Ben while only rushing 4 guys speaks to their scheme and execution.

Furthermore, our offense as a whole looked lost, not just Ben. Starks had more than a couple brain-farts in protection. Holmes dropped a TD. Miller let a couple slip through his fingers. I saw Hartwig laying on his back a couple times, etc… So, Ben did look lost, yes…but let’s not attribute our lose to him. The Bengals played a better game on Sunday.

All that aside…$100 million qb’s need to step up in HUGE divisional games (at home nonetheless) and will their team to victory. Ben, while he’s done it in the past (Super Bowl), couldn’t Sunday.

How come when the team wins we’re Super Bowl bound, but when we lose, there is no team that even compares to our feebleness?

These are the questions that have plagued Steeler Fankind for as long as I can remember.

It seems terribly apparent after this particular loss. Or I am just noticing it more because of this board this year.

He's still a good QB

The Bengals defense did a lot of good things for themselves, but Ben was a little off at times.

Nobody's perfect

But Ben has been one of the most consistently good NFL QBs since he came into the league. As he proved in the last Super Bowl, he’s a winner and a money player.

The main reason I can’t stand Arians is that most of the terrible plays you saw on Sunday were called by him. Even at the end of the game, when the Steelers needed to drive the ball down the field in bite-sized chunks, they called a post pattern against a prevent D. How dumb is that?

When Ben progresses

to be able to hit his receivers in stride, on short routes consistently, like those other QBs mentioned, he will be great.

This is exactly the kind of thing I'm talking about too

I nowhere implied that Ben isn’t a very good QB, but he could very easily be much, much better IF he tried.

by tobiathan on Nov 18, 2009 3:59 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

It's great that he wins a lot

but NFL defensive coordinators and players are smart; they figure things out fast. Unless Ben learns new ways to be a successful QB, his win percentage will fall off consistently until he’s no longer competitive.

I’m not sounding any alarm, or freaking out about one loss- this is a pattern i’ve seen with Ben. At some point, he will HAVE to become a more technically-sound QB. Period.

More Technically Sound

You mean like Eli Manning?

by samliam on Nov 18, 2009 6:04 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Eli

Eli Manning has the mechanics that people seem to want Ben to have. He relies on his mechanics. My point was that mechanics are not “all” that make up a great QB. Ben has a talent and he isn’t pretty (from a mechanics standpoint) but he is very effective, and already has 2 rings to prove it. I don’t want him to lose what he has in favor of better mechanics.

by samliam on Nov 19, 2009 8:28 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Why

Is there any presumption of some loss of Ben’s playmaking ability by forcing himto learn how to throw more quick-outs and timing-passes? Or to work extra with his WRs? Or to study opposing defenses until he instinctively knows what they’ll try to do in a certain situation?

Apparently- ANY criticism of Big Ben is verbotten on BTSC. People who offer criticism face ridicule, childishness and everything EXCEPT “intelligent, well-thought discussion”.

It’s a little late in his career to try to change Ben’s mechanics, but it’s NEVER too late to elevate his work-habits and game knowledge to an All-Pro level.

How hard is this to comprehend???

I get it

And agree. He can’t rely on busted plays forever.

by IronJake on Nov 21, 2009 12:06 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, I agree that he is good, and has the potential to be great. but is not there yet.

We struggle when a defense takes away the bomb. Is it Ariens, Ben, or something else? That I don’t know.

Young and Lots to learn.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen Ben throw the ball out of bounds on a busted play. Frankly, it’s nice that he wants to make a big play but sometimes being cautious and prudent is wise. Ben is a great quarterback, or at least possesses qualities that separate him from others, such as nerves of steel, and the desire to do anything to win. He’s also physically gifted and very intelligent after having seen the pressure of the playoffs and SB. Having said that, he is still young….mentally. He hasn’t yet matured in his coverage reads…and saving yardage from a sack by throwing it out of bounds or dumping the ball to his running backs.

by IronJake on Nov 19, 2009 12:28 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

At least a few people can agree

that Ben isn’t already Joe Montana-esque.

And, frankly, i’m not sure he’ll ever put enough extra effort into the QBing position to reach that level. If the Steelers didn’t have excellent defense we’d be in deep trouble, becuase i don’t see Ben carrying the team to wins on his own regularly.

It is probably easier to ignore criticism as “panic”, though.

by tobiathan on Nov 19, 2009 6:47 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Still relevent...

IMHO, b/c i still don’t see Ben improving as a passer. Until he can regularly and reliably complete timing-routes and quick passes for first downs I’ll be unsatisfied with his effort. As IronJake pointed out: Ben can’t keep counting on exploiting broken plays for big yardage. If he does, the Steelers are going to suffer.

Additionally: he wouldn’t run the risk of “accidental” knees to the head on those broken plays if he KNOWS where his WRs AND the DBs are!

Just imagine Ben’s potential with Brady or Manning’s level of preparedness….

As the season progresses I'm more convinved

that Ben’s losing it this season….
