Jamal Lewis.... In Pittsburgh?

I just was reading about Jamal Lewis' recent early retirement announcement. The 30 year old Lewis is trapped in the pit we call the Cleveland Browns. The pour soul.

He has indicated in the past he wants a championship ring, which is likely why he decided to resign to the Browns after their 10-6 year, possibly seeing hope.

Now, last we checked, whos the team who won the last championship? Yep, ours.

And what could said team use? Why a RB that doesn't fumble for one thing!

And what could we give to pry said RB away? I propose we try and sweet talk and get him to ask to get out of there.

I'd love to see him in a Steeler Uniform, I think he really fits our style. He could help mentor Mendy, and maybe get his ring.

I’ve heard this about Larry Johnson as well. The reason the steelers won’t look at LJ is because he has legal problems and the steelers would never accept anyone like that on their team. But:

Harrison: domestic violence
Holmes: drugs
Reed: Alcohol and public intox
Ben: whatever crap he is doing with the girl

It seems the steelers will take guys with legal problems as long as they can contribute to the team, right? The reason they won’t take a chance on LJ or JL is that they can’t play anymore to JUSTIFY dealing with the legal crap.

As an admitted browns fan, that’s the best I can do to make my point about this without trying to offend anyone. It just seems the steelers’ pristine morality thing gets a little too much play sometimes.

Please pray for us, it’s getting pretty ugly in Berea.

disagree

Harrison: not convicted
Holmes: charges dropped
Reed; who cares, he’s the kicker
Ben: nothing proven and probably won’t be

by WARDANE33 on Nov 3, 2009 11:32 AM EST up reply actions

Fair enough to disagree. The poster above said they won’t sign him because he has had legal issues at one point. I think it is safe to say that the above players have had “legal issues” even if the charges were dropped. Athletes are notorious for getting charges dropped for community service.

In terms of “who cares” about Reed. I believe Tomlin does, or he would have suspended him for the game after his incident. Despite his reasoning, everyone knows the reason Reed played was because he was the only legit kicker on the roster. Again, morality goes out the window when there are ballgames to be one. Which is fine, every team does it and probably should. But that’s my point, EVERY team does it, even the steelers.

by fivekmd on Nov 3, 2009 12:13 PM EST up reply actions

Reed

While I don’t really agree with most of what you are saying, I do agree with what you said about Reed, he was the only legit kicker on the roster. The problem with suspending him is you are not only punishing him, you are punishing the whole team and risking a loss. This isn’t baseball, every game counts. That said, we will see if he is here next year. I think not.

by DarinS on Nov 3, 2009 2:07 PM EST up reply actions

I agree on Reed as well

just a little “kicker” humor. the only reason he did play was as you said. we have a pretty good bunch of “character” guys and we haven’t made it a habit of bringing in guys that have had “legal issues” we just try to make sure when someone on our team does have a run in with the law it does not become habit forming. CHRIS HENRY with that being said, i agree with DarinS on Reed’s long term status with this team.

by WARDANE33 on Nov 3, 2009 2:55 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with you guys. The steelers are one of the model franchises in the NFL right now. But they are going to give their better players a lot of rope just like every other team.

And saying Reed might not be on the team next year solidifies my point. You should not get bonus points for replacing a player at a convenient time for you.

Good discussion, I’ll try to check back to see if you have any responses; good luck the rest of the way.

by fivekmd on Nov 3, 2009 3:38 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t generally disagree with that, though, replacing a kicker mid-season is not a smart thing to do. It is not like you have a couple behind him on the depth chart. I also am not making excuses for Reed(I wasn’t there so I don’t really know what happened) but there have been instances where police have shall we say slightly exaggerated what happened. If he did do what they say he did, then let the law do what they will and so goodbye to Reed. As Tomlin says often, I will tolerate you until I can replace you. Generally speaking I think it would be hard to say that the Steelers aren’t one of if not the best teams in the league as far as having quality individuals playing for them.

by DarinS on Nov 3, 2009 6:19 PM EST up reply actions

everyone on the Steelers with legal issues.............

was a Steeler before they got into trouble. They won’t sign someone who already has issues.

by grapes on Nov 3, 2009 8:29 PM EST up reply actions

Look into Holmes’ past a little bit and I think you will see that your above post if false.

Agreed that the steelers have less issues than most teams, but the winning teams usually do. the steelers are no better than the patriots, colts, eagles, or giants in this regard.

JL's legal issues were so long ago, and he's been a model citizen for quite some time now.

After all, he’s only in his early 30’s, he may have a lot of miles on him, but as a goal line back he’s tough to get down on the first hit.

I don’t see the Steelers creating a roster spot for him, but FWP is not likely going to see a new contract at the end of this season, and MM is a nice 3rd down and change of pace back, but none of our guys is a true short yardage back. JL has proven that he can do that.

"Damnit mom! You almost ran over Greg Lloyd!"

at an autograph signing back in 95. He walked out in front of our minivan, and my mom almost hit him. He apologized.

by PA ARMY OFFICER on Nov 4, 2009 2:35 PM EST up reply actions

With Mendy picking up short yardage and MeMo as the 3rd down/top back up, what we’ll need is a change of pace scat back. Which can be found in the middle rounds of the draft quite cheapily.

flip flop ages

The difference being is Brett is playing like a 30 year old and Lewis is playing like a 40 year old. He was great but those days are behind him.

True. It’s definitely easier to be an old QB than an old RB though.

Agree with you on that

For sure it is, you don’t see many 40 year old running backs. They just take too much punishment, especially a guy like Lewis. He has had a nice career but I think it is over. Now if we are talking backs that would be nice to have. I wonder if the Rams would give us another gift and trade us Jackson. He has a few years left and is exactly the type of back that we could use. I would be nice to have another super fast back, but we may be able to pick up small college mid round burner for that.

If Lewis is looking for a ring and not a paycheck, he could end up here. He’s over the hill, but we won’t be looking for a feature back next year. Just a guy.

Interesting thought

But I doubt it will happen. I’d rather have old WP than an old Lewis.

He's an Atlanta dude and friends with the great Hines Ward

but I with Frank Summers and Isaac Redman young and fresh and waiting in the wings, I’d pass on the dude. I’d rather just keep the backs we have and we have some good ones. I think that Mendy is gonna be a beast. His fumbling issues will get resolved. Period.

by SteelersFnRule on Nov 3, 2009 10:32 AM EST reply actions

I get frustrated when I see posts like this that don’t answer the question who would we cut to get him on the roster.

Anyway, I don’t think he’s very good anymore, I just don’t see what he could add to the team.

by SteelerFan Ben on Nov 3, 2009 11:35 AM EST reply actions

J. Lewis is done.

Check out his numbers for the last three years:

Year Team G Rush Yds Y/G Avg TD

2007 Cleveland 15 298 1304 86.9 4.4 9

2008 Cleveland 16 279 1002 62.6 3.6 4

2009 Cleveland 6 98 349 58.2 3.6 0

Sure, he’s been a beast in previous years, but he’s on the downward slide. You could also make the argument “Well, he’s on the Browns for f*cks sake!” True enough, maybe he has one or two more years of being amazing behind a stellar O-line, but it won’t be ours.

Jamal Lewis sucks, he always has and always will. That doesn’t mean he couldn’t tote the rock for quite a few teams in old-man form, and he could do so for the steelers. It’s extremely unlikely that he’ll get a chance here because it’s not like we need insight into the browns, and running backs of his “ability” are a dime a dozen.

That said, I don’t think you should use his stats against him. Not a single solitary person can gain yards on the cleveland browns.

Not to defend him, or anything, but he was a 1,000+ yard back the last two years with the skidmarks…

which means he would have

gained 1200 in a Steeler uniform. he screwed up when he went to Cleveland in the first place. maybe they were the only one’s who would have him at that time but i bet there are a few NFL teams that would take him on a 2 year deal if he bounces out of Cleveland. hope the Steelers are not one of them.

by WARDANE33 on Nov 3, 2009 2:58 PM EST up reply actions

We won't take him.

He’s a piece of crap. I hated him when he was on the ratbirds, and I hate him on the skidmarks, although I no longer have to worry about him lighting us up in the run game now, as I did when he was running behind B-more’s line.

Besides, we have the best back in the league on our practice squad! REDMAN FTW!!!

Oh god, please do!

That would be amazing just to see that Jamal would get 10-15 carries a game for a total of 23 yards. Please, please sign Jamal, stopping your already crappy run game would be even easier.

My summarized thoughtages here

As I posted above I was in a mildly altered state when writing this.

To clarify:

I think its very likely FWP is gone after this year. As a result, I’d look for a veteran back who could assist the team with some carries and also help mentor Mendy. I think Jamal Lewis could do that.

He ran like a freight train for Cleveland last year. Cleveland. As in, the Browns. Sure hes at that older age, but a year or two? It has potential to work.
