What players have you most wished could have been Steelers?
It was with sadness today that I read the news of the passing of Chris Spielman's wife, Stefanie, who died yesterday after a long battle with breast cancer. She had been battling the disease for 11 years and evidently she and Chris had raised over $6 million for research to fight it. I didn't know of that, and I applaud the Spielman's for it.
What I did know was that Chris Spielman was a rugged, intelligent linebacker who would have looked great in the Black and Gold. As an Ohio State fan, I followed his All-American career closely and rooted for him as he made Pro Bowls for both the Lions and the Bills. It seems unfortunate that he wound up on those teams. Chris Spielman was meant to be a Steeler. His grit, his effort, his toughness. For an Ohio guy he had Pittsburgh all over him.
Even though most of us are turning our attention to the Steelers-Chiefs game, the mention of Chris Spielman has gotten me to thinking. What opposing players, either current or past, would you most liked to have seen in the Black and Gold? For me, Spielman tops the list, followed closely by Ronnie Lott and Earl Campbell (imagine Earl Campbell as a Steeler! Now that would have been something!). Anyone else? I'm curious as to who the Nation would list...

Worst personnel decision EVER by Chuck Noll. Even if Rivera hadn’t been crippled in the car wreck, Marino would probably have wond the Steelers another 2 or 3 SBs.

I wouldn’t say that was the worst personnel move ever…how about cutting a young local kid, late round draft pick back in the mid 50’s….Johnny Unitas, anyone?

It was Walt Kiesling....
who cut Johnny Unitas, not anyone from the Rooney family. The brief version is that Dan Rooney convinced the team to draft Unitas after playing against him in the same high school district. Kiesling didn’t think U. was good enough and wanted to cut him. Dan Rooney pleaded with his father Art to over rule the coach. Art said it was the coaches call and that was that.

The most unpopular answer ever: Ray Lewis. I know we don’t like him in Purple and Black, but you’re lying to yourself if you think you wouldn’t absolutely love him in Black and Gold.
I would of liked to have had Mike Alstott, although, he would have taken carries away from the Bus.
More recently I’d say Igor Olshansky (doesn’t that just sound like a Steeler? Currently plugging the line as the DE for the Cowboys), Jim Kleinsasser (currently the blocking TE/ FB for Adrian Peterson in Minny) and Owen Schmitt (currently bashing himself in the face with his helmet for the Seahwks. WVSTeelersFan knows what I’m talking about.)
And for good measure, Rey Maualuga. Prior to the draft I mentioned him, and the most common reaction (and understandably so) at the time was “We don’t need another ILB.” Well, K Fox has played great when needed, but with the nagging injuries to Timmons, it would have been interesting to see what the Harrison, Maualuga, Farrior, Woodley LB’ing core would have done.
Cool topic, thanks.

Gotta agree with Ray Ray
If he was a two time DPOY with the Ravens, imagine how many times he could’ve won it with Lebeau as his coordinator. Gotta rep for my former Canes (even if they do play for a division rival).
Walter Jones is another player I’d love to have. He and Orlando Pace were like neck and neck this decade in terms of the best o-lineman.
Richard Seymour, when healthy, is the best 3-4 defensive end in the game. He’s just unblockable. Imagine a d-line with him, Aaron Smith, and Casey Hampton.

Gabe Rivera
Not an opposing player but I choose a player that got cheated out of a long Steelers career;
Props to Arn above for inspiring my choice. Had we REALLY been able to watch this guy play a career in black and gold we may not be longing for Marino. The Steelers may have very well won the coveted 1 for the thumb with Gabe Rivera anchoring Steel Curtain II sometime between 1983-1995?
In the couple games I watched “Senor Sack” play he was dominating at the line of scrimmage. He literally took on 2 linemen on every play and drove them back collapsing the pocket. After about 6 games he was tragically ejected out the back window of his 280Z during a horrendous crash on a dark, wet 2 lane back roads PA highway. Rivera was paralyzed and never played football again.

Chris Spielman has more character than any player in the NFL today. I once asked him if it was difficult when he made the decision to quit the NFL (for one year, as it turned out) to stay home with his wife, who was battling cancer. He said he didn’t have to think about it all. She needed him and that’s what he was gonna do. That was part of his marriage vows. Playing another down in the NFL didn’t matter to him at all. Chris and Stefanie were/are awesome people.

Rod Woodson was a better cover corner. Gave up fewer yards than Deion, intercepted as many passes per game and returned almost as many for TD’s.
Deion was a phenomenal Punt returner, but as a CB, he was never as good as Rod, even in Deion’s strengths.
Our corners had a lot of responsibility for tackling, Deion had to be covered for those, he would not have been much benefit to us.

Dan Rooney's take
In his biography, Dan Rooney relates the story of the 1983 draft and how then Pittsburgh Press reporter John Clayton told Rooney that the Steelers should draft Marino.
Rooney says he thought Clayton’s suggestion was a good one and, in retrospect, he believes that the Steelers missed the boat. But Rooney blames himself for the ultimate decision because he made the mistake of telling Noll, Art Rooney Jr. and Dick Haley that Clayton suggested the idea.
Noll’s contempt for journalists is legendary, so the idea was rejected out of hand. In the book, Rooney says he’s convinced that the Steelers would have won more Super Bowls in the 1980s with Marino at QB. I think that’s a pretty safe bet.

Obviously...
Have to wonder if Dan Marino wouldn’t have led the Steelers to a Super Bowl… Malone and Brister were awful Quarterbacks, and even into the 90s, I don’t think he would’ve blown it like O’Donnell or Stewart did. I think we could’ve won at least a couple Super Bowls with a winner like Dan Marino opposed to the other guys.
The other player I really wish would’ve been a Steeler was Barry Sanders. God almighty, was he awesome.
I also wonder if everyone in Monongahela would’ve been as bitter if Joe Montana had stayed in the area. Trust me. Everyone you talk to there seems to be terribly angry at Joe Cool. I suppose because of his disownment of the town, but you should see this place. It’s awful. I’d say I was from Pittsburgh too compared to Monongahela (I grew up there. Thank god, I’m gone). But still gotta wonder if Joe Cool would’ve won in Chuck Noll or Bill Cowher’s system.

I remember watching some random player interviews in Tampa during the Super Bowl last year & Jacobs was one player they interviewed. He talked about how he respected the way the Steelers organization was run, etc. It would be amazing having that 6’4" 264lb. beast on offense. He would have been a much better 4th round draft pick in 2005 than our pick, WR Fred Gibson.

Mariono would have carried them for 15 years, but I was very bummed that they never made a play for Montana, or Simms in the early 90’s. Neil just didnt cut it. I always wanted Michael Turner, a fifth rounder , I think. I know they still had Bettis, Staley, and FWP, but for all the Cedric Humes, and Bam Morris’’, why did we miss on thAT GUY.

My quick list
Personally I really wish we could have acquired Haloti Ngata. The kids a monster. And we’re getting due for a new big snack.
A real pain surges through me when I look at what happened to our 08 draft.
Granted its early to make a definitive statement on Mendy, but Chris Johnson was drafted with the next pick and Ray Rice was drafted two picks AFTER Limas Sweed.
Imagine our team with Johnson and Ray Rice, instead of Sweed and Mendy.

Red Bryant
In terms of players that we missed by only a couple of draft spots in recent years.
We missed him by two spots in the fourth round of 2008, then traded down and took Tony Hills. I have thought ever since that it was out of sheer aggravation at missing Bryant that our FO traded down. I know he has been dinged up in the NFL, but he would have been an awesome fourth round pick. In terms of sheer utility, he would’ve been super. He could have flexed to Nose Tackle, if needed, but he would have been a god at 3-4 defensive end. He’s wasted out at Seattle. Could’ve been our first worthwhile fourth round pick since Ike. That’s especially true since we don’t seem to have the hang of fourth round drafting, getting the likes of Hills, McBean, O’rien Harris, and Fred Gibson, when we haven’t traded away the fourth round pick altogether. And it’s easy to say that it hasn’t mattered since we won the SB last year, but he might’ve been the guy replacing Keisel last year, and now we would have another experienced and talented defensive lineman instead of being short on saavy youngsters.

Ummmmmmm.........
To me this is easy. We traded our first round pick to Dallas in 1990 so they could draft the future career NFL rushing leader, Emmitt Smith. We used their pick to draft Eric Green. Now, without Smith who would have made up the triplets? With him how much better would we have been? How would have Super Bowl XXX turned out if Smith was on the other sideline. Nothing against Barry Foster (who was great those few years), but he did not last long, and then we used a 3rd round pick for Bam Morris……..
My answer:
Emmitt Smith.
by imike29 on Nov 23, 2009 12:57 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Are you sure that pick wasn't part of the Herschel Walker to Minnesota trade?
I’ve never read anything about that 1990 draft choice trade, but I haven’t read everything either, so I could easily be wrong,
Plus, Emmitt Smith means no reason to get The Bus. Don’t forget that.

Positive.....
Pittsburgh traded down with Dallas……
In the supplemental draft the year before Dallas had picked Steve Walsh, thus giving up their 1st round pick in 1990. However, as part of the Herschel Walker deal, they receiver Minnesota’s 1st round choice (which ended up being #21). They then used that pick to make a deal with the Steelers, thus switching their pick (21 & 81) for ours (17). They then pick Emmitt Smith, and we picked Eric Green.
The Walker trade was completed in October of 1989.

Coach: Ahhh would you like me to get you some broth as well?
Leon: That’s alright, I’ll get myself [as he sits on the bench]

Leon: Yeah but the defense gave up the points (or something like that)
#3
reporter: There’s no “I” in team
Leon: Yeah there ain’t no we neither
#4
reporter: Leon are you going to play today? I hear you have recovered from your injury
Leon: I don’t know. I have a photo shoot today and it can get rough out there.

Possible draft picks
Every year, like most die-hard fans, I make a wishlist for the Steelers on draft day. Then, after the draft is over, I make a fantasy draft based on my rankings and the players available when the Steelers had a pick. Here are some of my best from those fantasy picks in the past few years :
2004- 2nd round- Bob Sanders- I absolutely loved the guy in college and had no idea who Colclough was. I thought we needed the competition as 2 new starters were slated in Troy and Chris Hope. I’m pretty sure he would have started over Hope. Oh boy, what a pick!
2005- 3rd round- Marion Barber- As our pick came close I was holding my breath for the bruising running back from Minnesota. I had no idea FWP would become a franchise back and wanted somebody to groom behind the Bus. When the pick was called in Trai Essex I yelled out “Who the f*** is that?” He turned out to be OK, but I stilll think we could have gotten him later and how great would Barber look in Black and Gold!?!
2006- 3rd round (95)- Leon Washington- My first thought when they drafted Willie Reid was “Why pick that guy in front of Washington!? The little RB brings way more to the table.” Home run! Our kick returns would have been solved and we would have added a dynamic playmaker behind FWP.
2007- 4th round (132)- Steve Breaston- I was a total homer about the Pittsburgh native and immediately slated him instead of Ryan McBean, who was a mystery to me at the time and since I had Charles Johnson (DE Carolina) instead of Matt Spaeth (a very weird pick IMO) I had no need for McBean.
2008- 3rd round- Cliff Avril- I still don’t get this pick. Bruce Davis was projected by most in the 5th and Avril in the 30-50 range. Avril was great value, they had him in for an interview and as it turns out he’s doing pretty good in Detroit (of all places) at the moment.
2009- 3rd round (79)- Duke Robinson- OK, the jury is still out on that one but at the time I thought Robinson (who was projected as a first rounder at some point) had way more upside than Urbik, who I thought was too slow footed to be successful in the NFL.
So there you go, of course I presented my best picks here ( I hated the Lawrence Timmons pick and that turned out fine ) but still, I think these guys would make awesome Steelers!
by Steelfrog on Nov 24, 2009 9:05 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I wouldn't want Sanders
He is worse than Troy when it comes to injury. He has never been health for a full season.
As for Willie Reid he was a excellent PR in College. broke Neon Dieons record at FSU (can’t remember which one think yards.) Only problem is he hurt his ankle and was never the same.

Let's agree to disagree
Sanders was NFL defensive player of the year, I’d take him any day. As for Reid, I just thought at the time that he wasn’t much of an offensive player, and I liked Washington…

recent/reality/draft....frog
i wanted to pull a mike didka and trade all our regulation draft picks (i think we still had 3 compensatory picks,)) to move up to mario williams,,,,,,,the perfect, hybrid tackle/de blend for the 3/4, plus agility to drop into coverage as we sometime require,,,,,,plus a physical and intimidating factor that we haven’t had up front for some time.
our blitz would be geometrically better due to his scary straight up pass rush,,
,the draft is a generally mediocre lottery…….we should almost always trade up for can’t miss h.o.f .quality or trade down for quanity odds……currently we(and most other teams) have a bunch of bunch of roster spot non starters that can’t even play special teams exceptionally well.

they are line backers, and weren’t in play when williams would have been the pick,,,,,you could say casey is physical, but only as much as most good nt’s but he’s not a playmaker….., an activist……..and with a nasty physical intimidating playmaker up front,,,,,we would be able to get by with blitzers ,less blessed with talent than 92 and 56
i don’t know that i’d prefer one choice to the other,,,,,,,but fantisy about how incredibly scarey we’d be with both
