Steelers Upset By Chiefs: Initial Reaction

Wow, credit goes to the Chiefs for hanging around and being in the position to win the football game, but the Steelers beat themselves this week with costly turnovers, poor play calling, and another huge special teams gaffe.  This team has some major work to do if they intend to make any sort of push toward the playoffs.  Next week we face a hungry Baltimore Ravens team that is 5-5 so let's take the next few hours to vent our frustrations and the crew here at BTSC will attempt to put together some content while we mourn this horrible, horrible loss.

yes, your right Mike Tomlin didn’t stay in his lane and didn’t tackle Jamal Charles….also he threw two interceptions.

Tomlin?

The core of this team is still the team that won the Super Bowl against the Seahawks…..Tomlin’s done a good job for the most part in not messing it up and I commend him for that………but to say that it didn’t take him 15 years like it did Cowher is just BS and not fair and you know it…….Cowher wasn’t given a team just a year removed from the SB with a 100 million dollar QB…..in fact Cowher never had a QB until Big Ben came along……..Basicly……Mike Tomlin is George Seifert………or are you crediting the great 49ers team as George Seifert’s masterpeice? Do you think Tomlin would have won the SB in his second year if he was the head coach in Cleveland? come on

by baabaablacksheep on Nov 23, 2009 2:02 AM EST up reply actions

I agree with you in all of your points, but you do come off with a tone that Tomlin is not a good coach. Yes a good team was handed to him, but you don’t just win a SB by showing up. Tomlin played a huge part in us winning XLIII. How many coaches do you think could have came in and won a SB in their second year here, even while be handing a good team? Not every guy could have done that.

It’s like the statistical aberration that proves the rule this year. I’m ok with it, I’ve come to terms with it.

I am beginning to think we are seeing both the Ravens and Steelers enter a transition. Got a lot of older guys out there, and young ones. I thought at the beginning of this year we might see age catch up with the Steelers, but it just seems like Ben can’t carry us this year. He and the defense dragged us kicking and screaming to the Super Bowl last year in a perfect Storm, not going to happen this year.

by Phantaskippy on Nov 22, 2009 5:03 PM EST up reply actions

Yup

You said it best. But the Bengals are in a transition to. From shit to a good football team. How come they are doing so well?

by Mr MaLoR on Nov 22, 2009 5:08 PM EST up reply actions

Defense man, that defense lets you move the ball, but you fight for everything, and they are taking advantage of every mistake.

Nothing in sports trumps a team just getting hot, or gelling, or whatever it is that suddenly turns a solid team great.

The Bengals defense has “it” right now, and with the weapons they have on offense, they could win it all.

Last years Steelers won with a lot of plays that could just be called luck. Fluke plays and big plays, just enough to win time and time again, all the way to the Super Bowl, you could outplay us and we’d still win. It just happens sometimes.

I hope the Bengals go the the Super Bowl if the Steelers don’t, I still like to see the AFC North win, those other divisions are just lame.

2 bad decisions by Tomlin is why we are what we are.

We let McF go with no plan to add depth to the secondary, means while the D is still good, any injury in the secondary is a killer.

We have no big play skill position player at WR or RB, didn’t get addressed in the off season.

I questioned your Steelers knowledge. You seemed so dead set that we are not winning because we do not have a “Big Play WR” which i read as a Randy Moss, T.O, Plax or Marshall type of receiver.

We have 6 superbowls without having that “Number 1” receiver mold, and when we had Plax, he wasnt even that good

You chose to make personal remarks by saying I live in my mothers basement, which I’ll be honest, I laughed at out loud.

I made a remark based on what you had said, you took it a step further with an immature, childish, and lets face it, cliche remark

By the way, my mother happens to be dead in real life, so living in her basement would mean sharing a coffin

I’m not saying that our WRs are bad. BUt do you honestly think that this year they put the fear of god into opponents like swann and stallworth did. and do folks fear mendy like they did blier and harris?

by Farmer Fran on Nov 22, 2009 6:44 PM EST up reply actions

Holmes garners enough attention, Ward and Wallace shine when they are given single coverage

I think our offensive philosophy doesnt rely on that “big play WR”

Not to say i wouldnt mind a Brandon Marshall type receiver, but i dont really see it as a neccessity

Mendenhall is slowly garnering respect around the league, he just needs to keep it up

Remember after Parkers 06 season how much attention he got from opposing defenses?

why can't the Off score TDs then?

none of our WRs scare anybody, sorry. I’m not saying they are bad, but no one has to game plan around then and they are easily shut down in the RZ, particularly Holmes.

by Farmer Fran on Nov 22, 2009 4:42 PM EST up reply actions

We are getting out coached in the RZ would be a possibility…most of our TDs in the RZ seem to come when Ben scrambles…why aren’t we utilizing Heath or Spaeth down there they are both huge and have proven they can catch the ball except Heath’s gaffe today, maybe we should give Sweed a shot again he is tall and will give us the ability to lob it if he can hang on to a damn ball which has proven to be a problem…I’m just looking for ideas to get us RZ touchdowns

It just seems ridiculous to me to say that the FO haven’t invested enough in skill positions to make this a dangerous offense. For instance since 2004 we have drafted:

Big Ben 1st round
Heath 1st round
Santonio 1st round
Spaeth 3rd round (sigh)
Mendenall 1st round
Sweed 2nd round
Wallace 3rd round

And this doesn’t list players like Willie Reid who were drafted quite high but never worked out. All of these players outside of Sapeth and Sweed have been very productive. Considering that Spaeth is basically misused as a blocker and Sweed may yet develope into a good WR, this is a pretty spectacular haul. In terms of drafting I’m not sure how you could invest MORE in skill position players without letting other aspects of the team go to hell. The fact that we’ve invested so heavily in skill positions in one of the big reasons why our OL is made out of mid to low round picks.

And, i doubt it needs to be said, no team lets a great skill player go unless they are simply a locker room nightmare or have deep problems off the field – see TO and Ced Benson respectively.

Considering our starting WR’s are Super Bowl MVP’s, our backup running back is a 2 time Pro Bowler, and our OL have been playing well this year I think there are only two possible reasons why we can’t finish in the Red Zone.

1) Poor play design/Poor use of the skills of the players in their position (i.e. Having Spaeth stay in to block)

2) Poor execution (i.e. Ben’s forced pass to Hines at Denver)

And both of these have more to do with coaching than the talent.

oh, how come our offense is so average and in the RZ so below average?

I agree about the RZ issues, but not our standing. We’re 6th in the league in total offense. That’s slightly better than average, I’d say. We’re 5th in passing yardage. Somebody has to be catching those passes.

by Varmint on Nov 23, 2009 12:22 PM EST up reply actions

So drafting Joe Burnett and Keenan Lewis isn't adding depth to secondary?

And we do have a big play WR. Unfortunately he can’t hold on to the ball when he’s wide open.

Sighhhh the healing begins now

Season’s not over, but for the love of God, Troy should just be put in the game in a mobile wheelchair, that way he can at least still have his presence known.

I honestly can’t understand Bruce Arians on that overtime 3rd and short call, just terrible.

Miller’s drop/INT now really looks bad, despite him having a fantastic day.

Don’t blame Ike Taylor for that near INT; that was a ridiculous play, and he nearly had it. Would’ve been a great reenactment of the Tyree catch.

Don’t quit on this season yet. Just pray Ben is ok, and that Troy will be back soon. Out of all the guys you cannot lose, those 2 are the biggest.

Tomlin should be screaming at every single player in that locker room right now, and trying to get these guys up and running.

Ok Ok…..You have to bring Batch in because of an injury. It is 2nd and 12 so a pass is somewhat imminent. He completes the pass for a 1st down…..Great right! Then on 1st down you empty the stinken backfield and throw an out? It almost gets picked/Wasted 1st down? Where is the safe run there? Then on third and 2 you run a sweep with Moore when you have FAST Willie Parker? The Steelers are getting out coached almost every game! Last week against the Bengals on a critical 3rd and 2 we line up in the gun? I really miss our power football game that has been our bread and butter since most of us can remember. It has been supplanted by a run and gun Madden video style attack. I am now changing the word stupid to “ARIANS”. Example: The coaching in this game was so ARIANS! I now feel better.

True, but they still have 6 games to play as well

Denver is dying, Baltimore relies on us losing, Houston and Jacksonville have a hard road ahead

If Baltimore and Pittsburgh finish tied, we will be third in the division because of record against common opponents. Very tough to get in that way.

by Sick Puppy on Nov 22, 2009 5:03 PM EST up reply actions

Im pretty sure it goes off head to head (i.e if we beat them twice), then divisional record, then common opponents?

Could be wrong

Bleeding Black and Gold.....forever

Your right – but if we split the head to head, the division will be tied and we will lose the common games.

by Sick Puppy on Nov 22, 2009 5:13 PM EST up reply actions

there are only 2 non-common games, right now we are 1-0 & Baltimore is 0-2 – we can’t win a tie-break with Balt. on common games

Arians has got to go.

Some here on BTSC have defended his play calling since we’ve still managed to win games and a Super Bowl. But that sweep call on the last play was absolutely the last straw. He has got to be fired. His ineptitude is wasting an excellent defense.

what would you call?

by neverender on Nov 22, 2009 4:46 PM EST up reply actions

Run up the middle (Mendenhall averaged 3+ yards a carry). Quick slant. Pitching it to Moore is not even in my top 50 Plays I would call.

and what if it didnt work? would you still want arians head?

by neverender on Nov 22, 2009 4:50 PM EST up reply actions

no I would not. Because those are sensible play calls. Pitching the ball 5 yards behind the line to your slowest rb to the short side of the field when you need 2 yards is not a sensible play.

That was expected to be a run all the way. Especially with Batch in there. A short pass would have shaken things up, gone against the grain. Yeah, I know — 20/20 hindsight and all — but they needed to play against type there. No imagination.

the difference between this year and last . . .

. . . is a defense that was one of the best in history last year . . . and a defense that is merely pretty darn good this year . . . the bruce arians offense is conducive to acquiring yards . . . but not conducive to ball protection and winning consistently . . .

by VIN K on Nov 22, 2009 4:48 PM EST reply actions

Not Arians, Ligashesky has to Go

We have given up a return for a touchdown in 8 straight games. In the last two games, this has been greater than or equal to the margin of loss. In other words, special teams has cost us these two games.

I love Ligashesky because he’s from Pittsburgh, but he has got to be fired. This is just totally unacceptable. I want to see him fired tomorrow.

by PaulMorel on Nov 22, 2009 4:49 PM EST reply actions

some of those were defensive returns, but that still doesn’t forgive the special teams…it is extremely disappointing given how much the st improved from 2007 to 2008…i find that st is one of the areas that can most take the breath out of a team, just look at the playoff game against jacksonville, the vikings game (until the defense rose up), cincinatti this year, etc.

Thanks

Gives me hope to see a fan for the opposing team who has some perspective. The loss hurts – alot! — but KC did what it needed to do to win the game. I take nothing away from what they did today. It’s got to be satisfying for Cassel, after that horrid game he had against the Steelers last year in NE.

Absolutely! A ray of hope!

The best thing is that KC is starting to play as a team. We are severely lacking in talent. Last time we played you in Pittsburgh and gor throttled! I kicked the dog. Haley has been well critized so it is good to get some validation.

Steeler Coaching

I understand you need good players to execute any game plan but isn’t coaching about getting the most out of the players you have. And isn’t that done by game planning a strategy that is within the ability of those players?

It seems that the offense almost has to play a perfect game for us to win. Many good teams have to overcome mistakes and injuries.

On the defensive side it is hard to think that with Dick LeBeau’s schemes that one player injury, any player, would bring the house down. The defensive schemes without Troy are obviously not achievable with the defensive backs presently on the field.

I know it is a bad word here but what about a trade for a good corner?

by Jeffrey19608 on Nov 22, 2009 5:07 PM EST reply actions

i think william gay has some developing to do, but trading him is not the answer. you have to remember that your worst corner is your weakest link, and it’s pretty hard to round up three deions out there. also, if the pass is spot-on (as several of KC’s were in the 2nd half), there is only so much you can do. the rules of the game favor the passing team.

by shrimppesto on Nov 22, 2009 5:14 PM EST up reply actions

I agree about the rules. The NFL has taken the phrase “Shutdown Corner” completely out. I have never has the utmost confidence in Ike Taylor or any of the DB’s ability to intercept a ball outside of TP. Most of our pass protection comes from the blitz. As soon as I see the opposing QB having more than 3 seconds to pass I start to raise out of my seat. The last couple of years other teams had an unconscionable 3rd down and 10+ yards conversion percentage against us. Sometimes having a big name out there does nothing more than make the QB question going to that side of the field. with our LB’s taking even a small part of the field out of the equation is a huge benefit.

We are forgetting.....

Big Ben with 3 ints. 2nd week in a row with mediocre at best play. We gotta improve as a TEAM. We will make the playoffs but we need vast improvement if we are gonna make noise when we get there.

agreed.

Pittsburgh can make it to the playoffs, but everyone has to play to their full potential and it just doesn’t seem like that’s happening in the past few games. The game against Denver was fantastic. They showed up and played like a championship team. Even the game against the Vikings, but it’s like a totally different team the past few weeks.

Using this logic what if MeMo fumbles and Heath picks it up and scores its still a good call

Its the same reason you didn’t see us running toss plays with the bus, MeMo doesn’t really have the speed to get outside like that. Running it up the Middle has a better chance of gaining yards than running a toss with a guy with medium speed and is the slowest RB on the team, if anything a Play action pass would have done a better job than a toss does

by Steelfrog on Nov 22, 2009 5:59 PM EST reply actions

Seriously

I don’t buy it’s a personnel problem. We have great guys on our coverage team. Wasn’t KC dead last in kickoff returns as well? If the problem is recurring, somebody has to be accountable and that person is Bob Ligashitsky. The guy doesn’t exactly has a shining resume and his unit has been stinking it up for the most part of his time here. At some point you have to bring in somebody else if only to shake things up and give the guys a new take on STs…

There is no real play which made us lose this game

1. The toss play which took us away from the FG range.

2. Our secondary which gave away the big plays resulting in the game tying TD and then eventually the game winning score.

3. The O which should have run the ball instead of passing (the INT drive), when we were running pretty well.

4. Special teams which demoralized us right at the beginning.

Each of the above has to share the same amount of blame. Granted the toss play failed but the secondary has to make a tackle.

It’s like going back to the drawing board.

BA is bs

Bruce bs Arians needs to go, he’s a pass happy offensive coordinator who doesn’t know fooball history. Teams have consistently won games by running the ball, yet BA continues to abandon the run without giving it a chance. the last 2 games have been very hard coz the Steelers were in tight games were if the running game would have been given a chance, it would have given the Steelers better chances of winning the games. BA’s fondness with the empty back set is specially disturbing given the difficulty in protecting Big Ben in those situations, he has been hit and sacked many times out of those empty set formations, why not put a running back in those sets where at least the defense will have some guessing to do whether it might be a run instead of the obvious pass play without the running back, BA is a joke

Lots of us have said that

Kinda like you guys have with Arians. Shitty week for both of us. I don’t see the sky falling for either of our teams. In neither case the better team won. In both cases, our respective teams let the underdogs hang around too long, essentially leaving us with a two game lead when we had the opportunity to take the crown. Not having Ben could be a killer for you guys. He’s a tough guy, but when you get hit as much as he does with his history of concussions, you’ll have to expect him to miss time. At least one week to get his senses back. Batch isn’t a bad backup option, but is old and not durable. With the stretch run for Both us and you guys being fairly easy, only we got our games against B-More out of the way already, there is still a potential rematch. all depends on how the cards fall in the next 6 weeks.

The fire is out

I have seen a real lack of emotion by the entire team this year. It seems like we are complacent or distracted, and in the worst moments detached. KC was full of energy and they were hitting us in the mouth, playing hard and fast but we didn’t seem to really ever match that intensity. We were the better team, but they played harder and with more determination. It could be that some of our older players and team leaders have a little less desire (Hampton is going to be a FA, same with FWP, Smith out, Ben dealing with off-field stuff) and our younger players aren’t quite ready to step up and fill that void. Our play calling has also been suspect. Spreading the field inside the red zone and abandoning the run has led to disasterous results and it seems the league has done its homework on how to beat our defense.

However, its how you play in December and January that really counts. Let’s get Troy healthy, get fired up and play our best ball going into the playoffs. Don’t give up on this team yet. We have the talent, but do we have the desire?

By the way it looked like Batch audibled into that sweep play in OT….

Chiefs fan here:

I just wanted to say first and foremost any loss is a tough pill to swallow. I should know—I’ve been a lifelong fan of the Chiefs (21 years in May).

You were not “owned” by the Chiefs. It was a battle on the gridiron out there! It was one of the most exciting games I’ve seen in the last couple of seasons.

Both teams were gutsy, and both teams made plays and showed a lot of courage. The Chiefs fans needed this win to prove to ourselves we aren’t as horrible as our record indicates. I’d say we’re more of a 5-11 to a 7-9 team right now. Beating a team of your caliber really gave us hope.

Has never shown that he can start an entire season. Batch is injury prone. He was in Detroit, too. Don’t forget you don’t have Aaron Smith either.

That Bengal fan that made that comment was ME. We barely beat you without Benson for most of that second game. We sacked Roethlisberger 4 times without Odom. Almost had another Pick six on him. However, both of our teams have been let down, by two equally bad teams at that. And the Ravens, your opponents, plus the Browns, our opponents, lost close games today as well. We will still meet in the Playoffs, I’m just here to drop some facts about your backup that you don’t think I know about. I’m not trolling, just here to have a friendly discussion, but nothing is friendly when it comes to you guys, and you feel the same about us I’m sure. I’m sure I’m gonna be banned for this so I may as well get my two cents in. See you in January.

Does anyone think that perhaps the AFC North canibalizes itself and that as Defending Super bowl champs we are going to get every teams’ best shot, especially those that are having down years??Everyone needs to relax, there are still seven long, grueling weeks left and as today evidenced there will be lots of injuries.Personally I see us going on a streak and getting a healthy Troy and a healthy FWP and grinding people up in December with a nice 2 headed running attack.I will be surprised if the special teams coache survives this week.I gaurantee that there are 4 or 5 guys on practice squads that will sell their souls to be on an NFL kickoff team.

I am now joining team Negative Nancy

This team just does not have it. I really don’t understand why, but this is not a team that is going to win enough games to slide into the playoffs or do any damage if they get there.

Tomlin needs to do something about this horrible ST coverage unit. Making one move is not enough. We need to cut under performers and put defensive starters out there. We cannot continue to give away points and expect to win games.

Also, how long do we have to watch this terrible play calling before something is done? On 3rd and 2 near FG range in OT we try to run outside? That is the worst call I have seen all year if not my entire life watching football.

Also, maybe FWP is showing he should be getting some more carries. He ran pretty damn well today.

I called it this week that I thought they could keep the game close against the Bengals. They do have talent which was completely thrown in the trash with a horrible football player behind center. Russell should never be allowed to touch a football in Oakland ever again.

Palmer made some bad decisions late in the game.

Palmer took another sack inside the 5 yd. line in the 4th quarter and the Bengals had to punt from deep in their end zone. It was almost a carbon copy of the play against the Steelers last week.

I called this in the preseason!

On this site, during the middle of the preseason, I posted a note commenting on how the Steelers were too lax and not taking seriously the difficulty of keeping an edge after winning the Super Bowl. I noted some national sports reporters who had noticed players taking a lot of time off practice, sitting on their helmets, etc. I was also bothered by Roethlisberger doing that stupid television segment for Shaq on ABC. This kind of unfocused, distracting behavior is not tolerated in New England, where the Pats hold their team to a higher standard. But after Tomlin had worked the players too hard in his first season and watched them tire out down the stretch, he apparently thought that his looser approach last year, which produced a SB victor, was the right strategy. This was a big mistake. Tomlin rightly took ultimate responsibility for the loss today, and noted that the team is not playing anywhere near its potential. That is because they lack focus and discipline. They are no longer hungry. I thought Tomlin was the kind of guy that would avoid the Cowher letdown, but he is only marginally better.

Blaming the losses on the lack of Polamalu is a terrible excuse. Remember the Patriots having receivers play defensive back and linebackers play tight end to account for injuries? The Steelers also said that they would increase positional flexibility to address injuries, but it is just lip service. Moreover, a team that needs Polamalu to win is not a very good team.

The coaching below Tomlin is terrible, especially on offense and special teams. And the players, who are on the field, are the proximate cause of the losses, so they bear a lot of blame. This is especially true of Roethlisberger, who clearly needs to play much better for them to win. But at the end of the day, the tone set at the top is what produces that last 2-3% of effort and desire, which in the NFL is the difference between playoff near-misses and a SB trophy. Tomlin has a chance to inspire this team the way Cowher did his in ‘05, but at this point, I’m very skeptical that it can happen. You can draw a straight line from a pathetic loss to a putrid team in KC to Tomlin’s letting players sit out practice or sit on helmets in August. Cowher always talked about the fine line between winning and losing in the NFL, and the Steelers’ laxidaisical attitude has put them on the wrong side of that line. I hope it changes fast, but I am very pessimistic…

But i guess in a way it keeps me optimistic. None of our losses were as a result of a team manhandling us. We have to play complete games and not beat ourselves.

Aw come out of the dark and into the light ec!

No one will argue that any team that puts the stats on the board like the Steelers did today should have won it in a very, very big way… until…. you get to the turnovers. Can’t turn the ball over that many times and expect to win. Also, can’t have an INT in your hands and fail to bring it in while your team is fighting for their lives in OT. Don’t give up just yet…

What happened?

I was watching the game (missed the first few minutes and opening TD, my feed link was dead) and we looked great in the first half. Running game looked good, we were throwing screens, short check downs, completing long passes too. I even commented in the first half thread that BA was calling a good game!

Halftime comes and goes, and the new feed that I was watching craps out. By the time I screw around trying to get a decent new feed up, and ultimately going to a sports bar, the third quarter has expired.

So now I’m watching the fourth quarter, and feeling pretty good about the game. We don’t quite seal the deal in the fourth, and it goes to over time.

We have the ball and I think it is 3rd and 2 at the 37, I look away for some bar related reason, and when I look back we are punting!?! Kansas City’s offense drives the length of the field and scores. Game over.

What happened to all that great offense I saw in the first half?

People who are saying this season is lost are ridiculous

I hope the team doesn’t have the same attitude. They would be in the playoffs right now if the season ended and its not like we have too tough of a schedule going forward. This team obviously has great talent and they obviously missed Troy P today. When he gets back, the defense will get back to being dominant and we could get right back on track. WE ONLY HAVE 4 LOSSES, it isn’t like we just moved to 5-5 or 4-6. We are 6-4 with 6 games left so people who are giving up hope don’t understand the NFL. Remember that 2005 season where we were 7-5 and “out of the playoffs?” Remember how that year ended? I find it mind boggling the amount of people that are giving up on this year…..

Give credit to the Chiefs today too. They never gave up hope today even when we went up by 10 going into the half. They executed well, didn’t make mistakes and got the win for their home crowd (I was at the game)

The Positives

LaMarr Woodley, Lawrence TImmons looked like the future of this defense, both having big days.

Ben was great minus the red zone pick, and the no-slide on the OT scramble. I’ve never seen him break out of so many sacks in one game before.

Aside his costly and rare mistake, Heath Miller had a great day.

Hines Ward had a great day.

Sepulveda continues to crush punts.

I’m sure I missed something but we’re a lot better off than a lot of teams.

I liked the way Mendenhall was involved in the passing game. I love the way he runs with the ball, decisive and powerful. He looked a little timid at first receiving the ball, but as the game wore on his catch and run got better. Glad this kid is breaking out. Anyone notice he spins less now, and when he does guys are falling off of him.

I hope Mendenhall gets his revenge against the Ravens and more specifically Ray Lewis this week. If anyone should be geeked for this game, this young man should be.

Rec'd

It’s normal for a team to make a few mistakes during the game. There’s will be at least one INT, at least one missed tackle, probably a lost fumble, and, with Big Ben at the helm, at least 2 or 3 sacks for lost yards. Usually the opponent makes the same number of mistakes.

The problem with this particular game was that we gave up points with almost all of our “usual” mistakes. Then we added a few more than usual, for good measure. Credit to KC for being opportunistic. They took every mistake we served up and made the most of it.

Of course, KC made mistakes, too. We capitalized on at least one of them. But we let the other faux pas go unpunished. Shame on us.

Despite our mistakes, there was a great deal to be happy about.

Last week, Big Ben played flat. He completed something like 49% of his passes. This week: 76% for almost 400 yards and three TDs. How’s that for week on week improvement? Ben spread the ball around to 8 different receivers with Ward, Tone, and Miller each getting more than 7 catches. While he is credited with 2 INTs on the game, one of them is clearly not Ben’s fault and the other is questionable.

Remember when FWP and Mendy were getting stuffed in the backfield at the start of the season? We had 2 rushing plays for a loss in the entire game. We were consistent. As much as I would have liked to see more runs called, we used our feet 31 times and passed for 44, which is not a bad mix for Arians.

Observations from a First Time Poster

1. One guy does really make a difference. No Troy, no big plays.

2. Steelers do not play “pissed off” this year. Maybe it’s not a Super Bowl hang over but it sure looks like a headache.

3. Time to put Harrison, Kiesel and anyone with a little “attytood” back on kick coverage. It’s clear that whatever they try and whomever they try it with in kick coverage is not working. It has cost them the last two games.

4. In "08 they made the right plays at precisely the right time to win games. Now, it’s just the opposite. I don’t believe in fate or destiny but this year I have been expecting them to screw up and they’ve come through. Someone has to step up and say “enough!”

5. Play calling wasn’t bad this week, execution sucked.

6. It would be nice if we could point to one thing that has contributed to the four losses. But it seems everyone is making a contribution: Kick coverge for sure; Health Miller shows “Sweed” hands on ONE play and it leads to a pick: Gay gets
confused in coverage (not the first time) and it leads to a TD; Entire secondary loses its bearings and gives up two consecutive big plays that cover 76 yards; Ben’s carving up the Chief secondary except when he throws a pick – not sure who our receiver was on that one – and we can’t run down the LB that made the pick until he’s inside the five.

7. Now for the bright side: The Begals truly cannot stand prosperity. Given an opportunity to do a tap dance on the grave
of our rule of the AFCN, they choke to the friggin’ Raiders.

8. We have six left. All winnable.

9. The Bengals are on the road to Minnesota and San Diego, both teams are hot.

10. We have been in worse spots before and come out on top. If this were Backgammon, I’d double down on our
chances of winning the division outright.

12-4?.....nice prediction. My distaste for BA continues.....

First let me say thanks to the Raiders for beating the Bengirls. I believe it was the Bengirls David Fultcher who knocked Bo Jackson out of football, I’m sure that was the main motivation for their play on the field today… = )

This loss was not a major surprise to me. I thought KC would be much more desperate for a win than us today.
I still hate BA. His short yardage play calling boggles my mind. I hate 4 WR on 3rd and short. It takes away the threat of the run. With Mendy busting up the middle lately, with his 3.5 yards and a cloud of dust style,I would like to see more play action( a la Indy)
I don’t disagree totally witht the 3rd and 2 run to Moore. He has made some big plays by making the first guy miss in his short career in Pitt(although I would have preferred Mendy in the game). What I do disagree with is the punt on 4th.
I hope Ben is okay.
I also hope this team will finally start feeling that sense of urgency that seems to be lacking in the 4th quarter this year.
Better luck next week.
F the Ratbirds.

On the play where Wallace fumbled it was 3rd and 4 and BA called for a deep pass. It seems like we do that a lot and it is really frustrating because that is such a low percentage type of pass that stalls out a lot of otherwise good drives.

I'm tired of the BA whining

Only one coach should be on the hotseat and that’s BL : Bob Lickmyshitsky!

Arians might make a some calls that we dislike, but he put together a package that has allowed Big Ben to flourish. His rapport with Ben is great and he can’t be held accountable for every screw-up, some players need to step up in critical situations like we did last year in the final run.

On the other hand, enough is enough with bad special teams play! I’m not just talking about our coverage either, we have weapons in the return game but nothing good is happening there. Although last year was a very good year in terms of coverage, one year out of three in the NFL just won’t cut it. I’m not a big fan of midseason coaching changes if he doesn’t settle this problem fast we need to look elsewhere… As coach Cowher once said, it’s all about accountability in this league.

by Steelfrog on Nov 22, 2009 10:49 PM EST reply actions

Is it coaching or execution? There were at least 2 if not 3 broken tackles on the run back. Not sure the coach can be responsible for people not securing their tackle. I don’t see a firing taking place. We had one of the better kick coverage teams last year, but maybe we let some key pieces go in the offseason?

by Silverback92 on Nov 23, 2009 12:11 AM EST up reply actions

“Arians might make a some calls that we dislike, but he put together a package that has allowed Big Ben to flourish”

Flourish into what? a QB who throws 40 times a game…big deal. He was just(maybe more) as productive in the W column when he was throwing 20 balls a game

by zenhas12strings on Nov 23, 2009 12:33 AM EST up reply actions

Come on!

He won a Superbowl, has been very successful this year, and the fact that he has thrown more doesn’t take away from his success. This is 2009, not 1979, everybody throws more in today’s NFL, like it or not. Do I think they should have run more against this defense? Sure! But the point is Arians has done a good job with Ben, has a diversified package and although we sometime second-guess his playcalling, other things are at play in our team’s struggles.

And Silverback92, I do believe fundamentals such as tackling in open space are coachable and therefore the coach has some responsability in the failure to execute properly. Players share responsibility, but ultimately when you let 5 through somebody has got to be held accountable. I agree that a firing is probably not going to happen in season, but things have to improve because that seat is getting pretty hot!

by Steelfrog on Nov 23, 2009 1:14 AM EST up reply actions

My first post

I’ve been lurking around here since the preseason and I finally decided to post today. Here are my 2 cents
How can some of you say Big Ben had a horrible game when he only missed 10 passes? I may not have as high of a football IQ as the rest of you but Peyton threw 2 INT today and no one blinks but Ben throws a couple and he’s distracted by the off field stuff? Maybe I’m wrong but it seems to me like he’s having a pretty good year.
Imagine how great we would be if he had last years defense with this years offense. Can you say unstoppable?

I personally don’t see why there is any need to panic just yet but I do think this should be Arians last year with the Steelers. We need a better secondary and I don’t know what is the deal with Special Teams.
I know some of you are pretty panicked but I’m going to keep focusing on the positive and pray our secondary can rise to the occasion next week and beyond.

The bulk of this team has won twice in the past 4 years…..that’s great, and most everyone is there from last year.

They are losing mainly because of these stupid turnovers and crazy punt/kick returns all going back for TD’s. Sure, Arians hasn’t figured it all out yet…but they guy HAS won a super bowl…..the team is more than good enough to do it again.

Many people on here forget what last year was like. There were many times we played last year where I wasn’t sure we would score more at least 10 points. You shoulda read the board after we lost to the Colts and Giants last year.

We do need to play better, but we are not out of it. And we’re not out of it unitl we are out of it.

Thank You Ragnar 808!

We need to put positive vibes out to the universe. Isn’t that what Troy would do?

I think we are good enough. The problem is, we are not getting it done week to week. It’s really frustrating.

steelers

that game was terrible. i dont think mike tomlin has us ready to play ball at a high level. we have too many penalties. i feel big ben is one of the best quarterbacks in the league. he has been inaccurate as of late. he is reminding me of the 06 season after we won the bowl and came back with that average mediocre season. ben looks a bit thinner than he did even at the start of the season. you hear announcers talking about ben’s weight as if he is too big. football isnt a beauty pagent. he needs to keep his weight up so he can get back to knocking players off him and slanging the ball down field for 35yd gains! we need big ben not slim ben.

why in overtime on 3rd and 2 we ran a outside run with moore, when we have two shots to ram the ball up the middle with mendenhall. it would have only took one play to get the first down. run a few more plays and kick the field goal to win and we 7-3. now 6-4. i know polamalu isn’t playing but we have to play better ball than that. in all areas!

The story of 2009 Steelers

Defense: great numbers but they can’t close the deal; They always allow the long drive for TD on the fourth quarter with a lead.

Offense: great numbers but they can’t close the deal; They always move the ball but not in RZ.

This team just doesn’t know how to close the deal, great talent all around, most balance team in the NFL. But ST, and Int, a fumble, a could have Int, or a bad play call and the other team is always given an opportunity to be close.

Why? is it coaching? is it lack of desire? is this team not hungry anymore?

I don’t know but I haven’t seen a complete game from this team this season. Why?

by mikemex on Nov 22, 2009 11:27 PM EST reply actions

Quick take

1.) Poor play calling by Arians, poor adjustments by the defense. Defense looked great in the first half, but again, couldn’t hold a lead when it mattered. Without Troy, our secondary needs help, and there were no adjustments (that I saw) to help with coverage.
2.) The offensive line took two steps back today. They did not open up the running lanes, and Ben was running for his life all day long.
3.) Special teams kick coverage. 4 total kicks returned for TD’s this year? enough said.
4.) Leadership. Where is it? Hines, Ben, Farrior…someone has to step up in a game like this. They can’t keep playing down to the competition.
5.) Tomlin. He said it himself, he didn’t have his team prepared.

Hopefully playing the Ratbirds will provide some much needed motivation.

complete meltdown by Bruce Arians amiright?

seriously steeler nation get off the lynching of Arians. he didnt lose this game…

by neverender on Nov 23, 2009 1:19 AM EST up reply actions

true to an extent…Arians didn’t call a consistently bad game (which I should have specified), but in crunch time, when it matters, he dropped the ball. That pitch play with Moore in OT, on 3rd and 2, was pathetic. That situation you need to attack the line of scrimage. A toss/sweep play starts 5 yards+ behind the line, which means, Moore needed to run at least 7 yards just to net the 2 we needed for a first down. Poor play calling.

Also, Steeler Nation is not “lynching” Arians for this game. His play calling has been criticized here for awhile now. And putting up numbers like that against the Cheifs isn’t exactly astounding…

Hope on the Horizon...Somewhere

I’ve been trying to find postive outlooks on the game all day and was provided with some.

First, THE BUNGALS LOST. This is huge as we still have a chance at the division. With the Bungals soon heading to Minnesota and San Diego and our remaining games for the most part being all winnable it is looking up.
Second, Woodley seems to becoming on of late. He posted 2 sacks to day and a number of quarterback hits. He seems to always be in the backfield causing problems whether its in the running game or passing game. The only downside is our defense isn’t flying to the ball like we are used to seeing.
Third, Ziggy Hood made a few plays today. He got to the quarterback a few times and batted down a pass which is good news for an aging Defensive line. Hopefully he can continue to progress and we can get Kirshke back and get some depth again as it looks as if they tired out and we’re blown off the ball on a few occassions.
Fourth, Heath finally got involved in the game. Yes, he had a gaffe on a play but he almost posted 100 yards on the day and got a TD. It seems to have been years since I’ve seen him that involved in the game and can only pray it continues.

Season is far from over and next week we play the Ravens. What a better stage to get back on track Sunday Night Football with a bird slaying. LETS GO STEELERS!!!

I think part of me died earlier today

Seriously, losing to the Chiefs is just horrendous. Nothing else can be said about it. And the worst part is, had we won, which we should have, we would be tied again atop the division because Cincinnati did the same tank job we did. Just a sad sad day. Destroying the Ravens next week will make all the pain go away, however….

Every one is missing the point.

You cannot win football games in the NFL with a defensive line that puts no pressure on the opposing quarterback. You cannot win football games in the NFL with an offensive line that can’t block or protect the quarterback. Ben is the most sacked QB in the NFL and the running game stinks. Tomlinson inherited a good football team what happened to them.

Allow me to educate on the intricacies of the 3-4 defense we run. first off it is highly successful, with a great many teams utilizing it. 3-4 stands for 3 down lineman and 4 linebackers. A Dline for 3-4 D is different from a 4-3 Dline. In the 4-3 the D-lines job is plug running lanes and sack the QB. The 3-4 D-linemens job is to take up two lineman and still make plays. in the running game. The 4 Linebackers jobs are stop the run, coverage in the middle, and sack the QB.

Green Bay is doing it now. We did last year. And the year before.

the running game stinks.

Mendenhall has 689 yards on 134 carries with a 5.1 yards a carry. Go enough for 11th best in yards, and 7th in ypc. Look it up for yourselve

And keep in mind he is 11th in yards when he did not start at the beginning of the season.

D-Line Pressure?

I’m not following what you are basing your opinion on when saying our d-line isn’t generating enough pressure. One, it isn’t there first job to put pressure on the QB. They are there to eat up blockers so our LB’s can run free to the QB or the ball. In this aspect the DL is doing there job exceptionally. Harrison has 10 sacks, Woodley has 5, Timmons with 4 i believe, Farrior has 2 and all have countless other QB hits and pressures.
Here is something else for you. Out of our teams 30 sacks the DL has 7. Pretty good numbers considering there main job isn’t the rush the passer. Kiesel has 3, Smith had 2 before he went out, and even big Casey Hampton has 2.

We aren’t losing because our DL, we are losing because we can’t protect the football and the ST gives points away like they are going out of style.

Nor are we losing because the running game stinks. It has already been commented on the Mendenhall has nearly 700 yards rushing and over 5 yards a carry. The line has blown holes up for Mendy all season, and if they haven’t he has created yards out of nothing.

Don’t know if you are up to date on the Steelers today or not but our Coach is Mike Tomlin, and he did inherit a good team. Tomlinson is an eventual HOF RB for the Chargers, who Mendenhall is currently putting to shame this season.

what needs to be done

Special teams need to shore up and stop allowing touchdowns, Defense needs to close the deal and not allow points in the 4th quarter, the offense can’t turn the ball over, and Bruce Arians need to call more running plays and stay away from the empty back set formations that consistently fails and get Big Ben harrassed far too many times without the threat of a run and no extra blocker in case there’s a free blitzer
