4 things that have to change
The Steelers aren't half as bad as they've looked on consecutive Sundays against the Bengals and Chiefs. But to deny that this team has some very serious issues seems pretty absurd at this point. Here are 4 things that I think need to change for this team to have any shot at the playoffs.
1) Kickoff coverage: Nothing gives a bigger boost to a team like the Chiefs than allowing a TD on the first kickoff of the game. Those points cost us another win. We need more toughness on the kickoff team, even if we need to start using more players from our starting defense. It's pretty clear that our opponents have found a glaring weakness that they continue to exploit.
2) Interceptions inside the 10 yard line: The 10-point swing that resulted fom Studebaker's interception was an absolute killer and gave the Chiefs all the life they needed. And this same thing has happened all too frequently. Can we please stop calling these bonehead plays in situations when they're absolutely unnecessary? If we get even 3 points in that situation, we win the game.
3) Over-reliance on long passes: Our QB is the toughest in the league, but he's going to get killed if we keep calling long passes when we don't need to.
4) Second half defensive lapses: How do we totally shut down a team's offense for 2 or 3 quarters and then just let them explode with big plays at crucial points in the second half? Dick LeBeau needs to find the answer to this one.
Bottom line: A whole bunch of bad stuff happens when you dominate statistically but not on the scoreboard. Our inability to put teams away was amply displayed against the Chiefs and, if not corrected, this will kill any chance the Steelers still have of making the playoffs. Gawd, if we can't close out the Chiefs, who on earth can we close out?

Starting a game 7 points down sucks. I miss Anthony Madison

we need a half-insane person out on ST that would help

#55 Bailey
He made a lot of solo plays last season, not so much this year. He is not playing at the same level and with the same intensity. He was key last year on ST. We need to fix this puzzle this week .

The questions on ST are just mind boggling. Was Anthony Madison really the difference between 4-5 touchdowns and none? After such repeated and costly gaffes Tomlin needs to fire the ST coach and take it over himself. If nothing else this would demonstrate that he takes the problems seriously. After all, Chuck Knoll coached his own ST for a long time before he ever hired someone to do it for him.
The lapses in coverage are glaring. We need another playmaker back there. While some have been calling for us to draft an OL or RB in the first round next year I think it is imperative we get a Safety or a corner that can not only play solid in all aspects of the game, but also make plays for us. Besides, what’s the use of spending another high draft pick on a back if we’re not going to utlize him?

I think we need to draft a Safety too but
that’s because Clark is getting old. What we all seem to forget is we did draft a playmaker in the secondary. Joe Burnett anybody. Name the last defensive rookie to have an impact with LeBeau?

Since rejoining us in 04 the only D players to have a impact are
Woodley, and Mcfadden. both made their mark in the playoffs. Aside from them nobody has made a impact.
My point is lets not run to say we need to draft a lot of DB because this group can’t stop anybody. We got two rookies waiting in the wings.

I Agree with Billy52's Bottom Line
The stats for this game were mind-boggling!!! No way should we have lost this game! What will happen next week when we play Baltimore after today’s nightmare?

Running the Ball
Also, I would like to point out that so far today the Bengals have never lead by more than 14 (currently 7) with a great receiving corps, a Pro Bowl QB, and an OL of non-first round draft picks have run the ball on the Raiders 43 times for over a 4 yards a carry average.
And have only turned it over once.

And lost in the closing seconds on a special teams gaffe. Wow. Bad day for the AFC North.
