Mike Tomlin should be fired for punting in OT

OK, Mike Tomlin is still the man and should not be fired, but I really have no idea what he was thinking in punting in OT.  Let's not get into why we didn't run Rashard up the middle from 3rd and 2 (I hope that we don't feel obligated to bring Moore in every 3rd down no matter what).

Why did we punt there?  Even if we didn't trust Jeff Reed with a 56-57 yard field goal, we should have went for it.  We have the best defense in the league and you have to assume that the odds are you are going to get a touchback if you punt (thus netting you only 20 yards as opposed to going for it and failing).  I feel that Mike Tomlin played "not to lose" with that call.  The right call in that situation was to give Jeff Reed a chance and go for the win.  Your second option is to go for it.  Charlie Batch is a veteran and we have great wide receivers (plus you knew they would blitz, so we have to have an easy dump pass to get us five yards).  The worst option was to punt.  The hardest thing about winning in OT is getting the ball.  We were in their territory and we gave up the ball without trying.  A million things went wrong today, but I thought I could rely on Mike Tomlin and his decisions.  This decision was a poor one and I wish we would just trust the personnel who won us a Super Bowl and go for the win (whether that be a field go or going for it on 4th and 5)!

The chance was totally worth it

Twenty yards in the end didnt matter did it?

Fact of the matter was I disagreed with the call as well. Unless you pin them, its not worth a punt.

by Mechem on Nov 22, 2009 8:58 PM EST up reply actions

It was a really terrible punt by Sepulveda too. That man can kick the shit outta the ball, but he sucks at punting to the corners or putting it up high and letting the coverage get under and down it.

Right

He’s done OK…

But then why punt it, knowing this.

And I thought the kooks come out after a loss to a good team.

Wow. So are you suggesting that the 61 yard catch would not have happened if the field goal was missed or we didn’t get the first down?

by dawgs144 on Nov 22, 2009 5:45 PM EST reply actions

I'm confused as well

if we give up a 61 yarder at the forty its a TD at least with the punt you make them go the length of the field so you have more of a chance of stopping them

Its a hard call to make

Cant say i was thrilled about it, but thats why im not the coach.

He made a choice, he stands by his choice. We opted to make the Chiefs come get it, and they did.

Good for them.

Its not how you fall down, its what you do when you get up

My point is..

Go for the win, either by kicking a field goal and making it or by going for it on fourth and then getting points later off the drive. Your point that they are going to get that 61 yard pass no matter what is why we shouldn’t have punted. Do something to win the game, not give them the ball and hope they don’t make something happen. In OT in the NFL, you have to score when you have the ball, we shouldn’t have given it back to them.

The Steelers

worked hard for this loss and did everything they could to make sure a 2 win team got their 3rd win.

I agree

In OT, you go for it on the 4th. I could not believe it when we punted! But, we gave the game to KC all day. In penalties & turnovers. I am embarrassed by the way we played. Where is the team that played in Denver??

Whenever we lose...

People that hardly ever post come out of the woodwork questioning every call. If the Steelers lose, does that mean your life is over? Maybe some of us should get a life.

I’m pretty mad that we lost but I’m not going to be depressed over it.

I apologize

I apologize to you people who own the blog and post all the time for bringing up this point. I disagreed strongly with Tomlin’s call there and wanted to get other fan’s reaction on it. Maybe my headline was a little strong and was obviously meant as a joke to get attention. However, I don’t see how my post questions every call or where I post a gloom and doom scenario for the rest of the season concerning the Steelers.

Can Anyone tell me

the last time Skippy hit a 57 yard field goal, not even in Madden is that going to happen. Mike is going to be around a looooong time, get used to it. And I wouldn’t have it any other way. As for Arians, that is hopefully another story. And who the heck is the soon to be unemployed special teams coach? Horrible.

I didnt ask for a FG

I asked for balls. the team with the balls wins. We played vagina ball in OT.

Why not let Batch throw it on 3rd and 2? He nailed that first pass great, and has never let us down. They played way too safe and lost.

And when the D was being so dominant all game, theres no reason to punt for a 20 yard net.

by Mechem on Nov 22, 2009 9:00 PM EST up reply actions

My bad Mechem

thought you wanted a field goal. That corrected, I agree wholeheartedly, unless you are one of the guys seeking Tomlins head in a basket. Tomlin stay + Arians go = Success

Wait a minute

missed something in your last post, were you suggesting we go for it on fourth down? The defense is the only unit we have that earns their keep lately. I agree with punting. Better play calling and it would have never been necessary though.

No we should have gone for it. They should have trusted Charlie Batch

to make the play. At least we would have won!!!! I don’t think that Tomlin should be fired, but I do think that he made the wrong decision there and in a lot of other questionable calls. The hardest thing is to get the ball in OT and if you do , you don’t give it back. At least the Bengals lost and we are no worse off than when we started the day, (in our own division) since the Ravens lost, as well.

Wake-up Call

This game more than any should either wake this team up or they will be beaten next week in Baltimore. They can not just put it all together…another kick-off return for a TD.

by ColinP on Nov 22, 2009 10:17 PM EST reply actions

wake up cal....again?

There is no wake up call this year! It should have happened after the chicago game! No playoffs this year and we are facing third place after next wee…No BB and no troy = ravens win…face it, steelerfans, we will be watching a new team take our trophy away! I hope I am wrong, but injuries, age, penalties, poor special teams play is catching up to us…

by nycsteelerfan on Nov 22, 2009 10:24 PM EST reply actions

You're 100% right...

We should have taken a 55+ yard field goal (way longer than any kick Skippy has ever made. [Career long of 53, and only 50% on his career from 50+, thats 50+, not 55+ remember]) and risk giving up a short field and momentum…

                                             or…

Give a 2-7 team 80 yards of field in front of them against the Pittsburgh Steelers defense.

Hmmm….
I know it didn’t work this time, but I know what I’d rather do 99 out of 100 times. Let’s think seriously about this. The man hasn’t been able to touch a kick off back (1 out of 50[ish] on the year) and now we want him to boom 57 yard field goals. Where’s the logic behind that? If Sepulveda could hit a corner, and not get a touchback, the decision looks way better. If we don’t give up a long pass, the decision looks great. I think it was the right choice, given the situation and personel we have.

This wasnt the Colts Pats decision

This was IN THEIR TERRITORY. And that means 60 yards, or 80 yards, didnt make a huge difference. All we needed was two.

And yes if Sepulveda hits it right then it looks like a good call. But I dont think hes the best punter for short kicks. Hence why I wouldn’t have asked him too.

by Mechem on Nov 23, 2009 12:11 PM EST up reply actions

Never compared the two.

Would you have opted to go for it, or kick the long field goal. I would think about going for it if we had Ben in the game. I wuld never kick the field goal. In my opinon, Reed would have never made that kick, not if you asked him to try it 100 times. He doesn’t have that kind of leg.

The D had been stopping them all day

Personally, I would have liked to see them go for it on 4th down. I can see where Tomlin was coming from punting the ball. Given the kicker we have, a field goal was not an option. Bottom line is we shouldn’t have been in that situation. Stupid 3rd down call put us there

by qwikdoc on Nov 23, 2009 11:04 AM EST reply actions

+1

The 3rd down, if it had been a simpler “less likely to lose yardage” play probably puts us at 4th and 2 in the worst case. Where I think we’da gone for it, and gotten it.
