"That's just bad football" - The Jamaal Charles KO Return

Well, here we are with a week 11 football hangover worse than the hangover induced by post loss "sorrow drowning" I participated in last night.  About last mid-week last night I was talking with a Chiefs fan and I said I would not be surprised if the Steelers gave up a KO return early.  He says to me "Our ST is really bad."  "Our ST coverage is worse," I retorted.

So after allowing a shockingly horrible 3 KO returns this year, what does the team do?  We drop one player and activate a PS guy.  Small moves will give you small results.  It's about time we try making a big move for big results on our ST coverage team.  Maybe some defensive starters should be put out there to fire up some of those guys and show them the attitude it takes to make big plays.  I don't know the answer, but something a bit more drastic needs to be done.

Star-divide

Anyway, another loss where we surrendered "free" points to an "inferior" team.  Off the opening kick Jamaal Charles returns one for 97 yards and we give the Chiefs an instant 7 point spot.  We spent a good portion of the first half fighting out of a hole.  That is just  bad football.  The thing that is particularly bad about this return is how many missed tackles there were.  Every guy out there, it seemed, missed a tackle and therefore shared the blame.  Let's take a look at some screen caps of the Charles' return.

Jc_lol_medium

Charles catches the ball at the 3 and here we go!

Jc-2_medium

By design or not, I am not sure, Charles sweeps across the field.  This is not a big deal if our ST holds their lanes, notice Logan is doing just that on the left side of the screen cap.  Two Steelers(hard two catch numbers since they were sprinting so fast) have a huge gap down the middle and a clear shot on Charles.  Good ST players and teams make the stop here and end the return before the 15.  However, our two players continue running at where Charles was and not where he is going.  They blast by him and miss out on even having a chance to tackle here.  Oops.

Jc-wtf_medium

Here, Charles gets a great block and hits the hole very fast.  Logan is peeling off his block very well here and probably should have just tripped Charles with a foot (legal or not, who cares).  Please notice the space I have labeled "WTF?" Charles see daylight, Charles happy.

Jc-wiff_medium

You have to just laugh at this one.  The pointed out player holds his lane and is waiting there for Charles to arrive.  He gets one of the most dominant two hand taps I have seen in the history of two-hand-touch football history.  He absolutely demolishes Charles with a two-hand touch so rough I thought he was going to get a personal foul.  In all seriousness, I cannot describe how bad this play was, nor can you see it in a screen cap.  Go back and watch the highlight video of the game.  This dude absolutely misses on a very weak cutback by Charles.  *Note* Logan is recovering from his block.

Jc-slipnslide_medium

You are now boarding flight 6-4, a non-stop flight to fail.  Andre Frazier displays a wonderful slip 'n' slide form he must have been doing the previous day at the team BBQ.  He gets a full hand on Charles.  Dude, grab something!  Jersey, arm, leg, ball, facemask, pride, grab some more of those BBQ spare ribs, just grab something!  Furthermore, notice all 3 of the players over-pursuing to the outside of the field.  What happened to holding your lane?  It's pretty obvious what is going to happen, 42 is about to have a "three-for" of a block.

Jc-logan_medium

Logan was finally caught up to Charles who is falling down in this picture.  However, he temporarily gets distracted by the over-pursuit party and decides to poke his head in.  He runs right by Charles who essentially falls down and gets back up untouched.  Notice the Chiefs player congratulating Frazier on his tremendous slide, or maybe he is asking if they have any leftover spare ribs from the BBQ.

As Charles stumbles Ryan Mundy makes one last "effort" at a tackle and throws a weak arm in Jamaal's path, who simply blazes through it and he is off to the races.  This return is full of poor execution and too much over pursuit.  Honestly, from looking at these returns I cannot tell if it is a lack of coaching or just terrible execution by the players.

It should be noted that, on Charles next 3 returns he only averaged 20.3 yards and did not really have another big one.  However, I that means little to nothing when he put 6 up on the board from his initial return.  What do you do now Tomlin?  We can't just keep allowing this to happen if we want to contend for the playoffs.  Hopefully, no one took offense to my satirically negative tone.  I was just hoping that some humor tied in with the analysis would lighten up the mood after a bad loss.

How can anyone take offense at the negative tone?

Our coverage this year has been so pathetic and unsteeler like that it demands a negative tone. There has been a consistent pattern of poor execution and that, without debate, gets pinned on ST coaching. One return with otherwise solid play can be forgiven. But our comical display of KO coverage this whole year is embarrassing. I don’t see how coach T can sweep this under the rug. He has to address it NOW and the only logical move is for him to fire the ST coach and take over those duties himself. This won’t improve unless he drops the hammer. I don’t think you want to change OC in the middle of a still promising season, but the ST coach can go away with little consequence.

Totally agree. How do you not fire the ST coach when he’s put a historically bad unit out there? This unit is costing the Steelers games and keeping other teams in games that ought to be blowouts.

Agreed with everything you said. I just know there are a couple of guys on this board who fail to take a joke. So I was squashing the recoil before it developed.

I had to follow the game on nfl.com gamecenter again yesterday but was able to see clip of return right away. Couldn’t believe the poor tackling and overpursuit. I couldn’t identify the guy who missed the tackle in your 4th frame. can anyone ID him? He should be absolutely ashamed of that effort. If ST is his only responsibility, he should be replaced by someone on the PS who isn’t afraid to throw himself in there.

It almost looks like 27 Joe Burnett, but I am not sure if he was active or not for the game. I watched it a dozen times over and couldn’t pick out his number.

If it was Ike

Why is he out there and not Clark? Each one is just as valuable, and I feel like Clark can make some heads roll and he is not afraid of contact like Ike appeared.

Probably because Ike is fast and Clark is slow?

Do you need to be super fast on a return? At some point you are going to end up where the returner is. And if you don’t over pursue it shouldn’t matter how fast you are. I feel like its more important to be a good tackler, granted I wouldn’t put a Casey Hampton out there, but you get the idea.

And yes, I know that Ike has blown tackles in the past.

Ryan Clark blows tackles every game. He also lowers people’s IQ. I like Clark, but there are several legitimate reasons why Ike is on coverage and not Clark.

Now, why is Clark not on the team over, say, Ratliff?

Why is Ratliff on the football team? That is a better question. I don’t disagree with you though. I was more saying that Clark’s hard hitting might amp up the ST and get rid of that lethargic look they possess.

Ike is definitely not perfect in coverage, but seeing who a guy tackles in-coverage is a decent observation of what they will do in ST. Clark is not the greatest tackler, period. Taylor is a very sure tackler.

Clark would be a great gunner if he had some speed. As it is I doubt he can beat blocks to put himself in a position to make a tackle, let alone make the tackle.

Still, I like the idea of putting as many starters on ST as possible. Deebo with the longsnap.

The more you analyze frames 4 and 5

you have to ask, what were Mundy and Gay doing? In frame 4 they both could have taken a direct route to the ball carrier instead of the gross over pursuit which is evident in frame 5. Did they see something not evident on film? I know it is different analyzing still frames compared to live action but it was obvious he wasn’t going to cut it outside because the unidentifiable player is in perfect position to cut off the outside. Also there isn’t any Chiefs player who looks like they have the angle to block Mundy or Gay if they crack straight down to runner. Does anybody see this differently?

Great post Johnny

The commentary had me laughing out loud. Nobody should take offense because the special teams are that bad. I believe the two hand touch guy is Ike Taylor. He must have thought the returner was a football and therefore needed to avoid the situation at all costs. They probably didn’t teach special team tackling at Swaggin Unerversity.

I was at the game

and you could totally tell from the moment he started sweeping across the field that he was going to the house. I could have sworn that every Steelers player was between the home hash and the home sideline, the over pursuit was ridiculous. It’s just as simple as staying in your freaking lane and they couldn’t do it….

It is kind of sad

A sweep generally makes a return worse, or it should. You are moving east/west and allowing the coverage team to get down field and tackle you further down field. Well, that is the way it should work. Our guys constantly over-pursue and end up biting hard on the sweep. Just another return in the book of suck that is our ST.

It's Jeff Reed !

Lot’s of excellent points being made. However, the most glaring point, IMHO, is being over looked. It’s Jeff Reed and I don’t mean his lack of tackling skills. I don’t have access to the raw data for the analysis so let me take a stab at a subjective analysis. Jeff’s kickoffs are by far and away TOO low! The ball is getting caught at the 5 and 10 yard line faster than any other team. This allows the kick returner ample time to get up field with the low short kicks before the Steelers can get down field. Now, with a full head of steam, not to mention the excellent look the returner gets at what’s coming his way, the returner is reaching the 20 or 25 yard line before the first steeler shows up. The late initial contact leads to a 33.4 yard average starting position and 4 kickoff returns. I would like to see what Jeff’s hang time is on the kickoff Vs. other kickers. Also what yardline is the ball being caught on because Jeff only has 1 kickoff for a touchback (probably in Denver). I am not saying other items don’t need addressed as you all described but, highest on my priority to stop the kickoff slide is get a deeper kick with more hang time. I love Jeff’s 80% and 100% average for Field goals and extra points respectively but the Chicogo game and the off field antics coupled with the low short kickoffs tell me we should not resign him. Oh yea, and he can’t tackle my little sister. NTS

by NTS on Nov 25, 2009 1:26 AM EST reply actions

While I do agree with you

That was not really relevant on this particular return. Reed got the ball down to the 3 and Charles ran a sweep. So he was running East-West while Steelers were making their way down the field. As you can see from the screen caps, initial contact could have been made before the 15.

However, his short kicks have made an impact on some of the other big returns.
