My solution to the Pittsburgh Steelers special teams woes - get Deebo back in there hunting heads.

Does that risk losing the reigning Defensive Player of the Year to injury? Sure. But last time I checked, Harrison hasn't been at all injury prone during his career.

Plus, who's going to injure that guy when he's the one running down hill with a full head of steam? That's right. Nobody.

Love the Picture!!!

What a great night for Harrison…that picture made the night much better just thinknig about how he destroyed Reed. It is time to unleash him on ST and let him go after people lives. It is time for a change on the unit and Harrison should help and has said he would be more than willing to play as well as Clark. Lets get those guys out there and get the rest of the guys fired up and fix the problem.

yup

I think him out there would scare the bejeezus out of some of the younger guys who could use a little kick in the pants.

I remember that awesome body slam...

I just think that special teams are absolutely about attitude.

by Dr Del on Nov 23, 2009 11:48 PM EST reply actions

Different Idea

Instead of playing Harrison on ST lets just send him after the ST Coordinator. Run him out of town or at least scare the shit out of him so he makes some changes…then put Harrison on ST.

by redmik on Nov 24, 2009 12:14 AM EST reply actions

rec'd for awesomeness!

I agree. Why not put some starters out there on special teams? Harrison would murder on special teams coverage, Holmes has proven to be a beastly punt returner, and Wallace could return kicks along with Logan. Are the steelers afraid that these guys might get injured on special teams? Or do they just want to keep them fresh for regular play?

go pens!

I'd even say play Keisel

A longtime ST ace, but because Aaron Smith is out with an injury, that’s too risky. But I really think Deebo should be in there.

heck

Put in Rashard. Loved the hustle on the pick. Game saving play, if the Steelers where in the mood to win.

That is not a bad idea at all.

I'm with you in theory, but

they’re already thin on DL. If anything, they should pull Ziggy off ST (didn’t notice, maybe they already have).

I love the idea of having the Diesel and Harrison covering kicks, but this seems like more of a visceral response. Some of the young guys covering kicks need to be considered for deactivation if they don’t step it up. If Sweed can wear sweats for several straight weeks for a few drops why are some of the other young guns on ST given a pass for the collective lapses? The film doesn’t lie — I would hope Tomlin figures out how to deliver that message. Obviously it’s more than Arnold Harrison.

by chicos_pants on Nov 24, 2009 10:25 AM EST up reply actions

Harrison was nasty on ST

Good idea- That beast merits strong consideration to go back to pounding heads on coverage units. That added “positional flexibility” might enable someone else to “get a hat”, perhaps R.Harris, J.Burnett, L.Sweed/S.McDonald- guys who are probably real hungry to make a contribution… Keisel was nice too, but he bulked up (and slowed down uh just a tad) to play full-time 3-4 DE… Anyone hear DVE’s recent bit where a Steelers fan tries to recruit Chidi Iwuoma back to the squad? While he has a SPECIAL (sorry) place in many of our hearts, let’s look at some more recent past: last year. Kick coverage at least in the last half and playoffs was solid and under-appreciated in 2008-09. “So… what about Donovan Woods?”, you ask. We signed him last week for express purposes- it seems Arnold Harrison who was hurt in ‘08 and worked his way back to the roster in ’09 wasn’t getting it done… Carey Davis did a respectable job in ‘08 wasn’t on the roster to start ‘09 and then was signed and got hurt… Anthony Madison was deemed not worth a million bucks to do just spc teams coverage- Burnett had more upside at lower price… I’m not noticing Keyaron Fox making plays on regular basis on special teams like last year… Speaking of Top3 ILB, Timmons looks slower this year… In another post someone suggested removing Logan from kick coverage, which seems reasonable… That said, anyone know what Chidi and Fred McAfee are up to these days?

and one more thing

Patrick Bailey to me is another player who has not been as noticeable on ST this year as he was last year.

put sweed in as gunner w/logan

maybe if he can manage to catch a whole body it would be a start in the right direction

Sweed is a useless roster position right now. Maybe we should get him in on ST (if he can play it). Maybe it will give him a thirst to be on the field and make him work harder at being a good WR.

I think we should use Sweed as a cornerback.

He catches the ball once in a while and he is a great blocker and route runner. He reminds me of Mel Blount.

Burnett is plenty fast enough

And he has pretty good moves.

On the kick where Stefan Logan leveled Sproles, Burnett was the gunner on the other side of the field. The camera actually showed a better view of what Burnett was doing on that play. He bolts down field and comes face to face with a two-man wedge. He fakes a cut inside and instead hops a few feet farther down field. He barely breaks stride. The two defenders are left standing flatfooted as Burnett cuts around them and arrives a second after Logan has taken Sproles to the ground. (Dunno how Logan gets there so fast.) It was the first and only time I’ve been impressed with Burnett, but it was quite a play.

I like the idea, but

I’d rather put someone else out there. With two of our defensive stars down this year, I don’t want to lose a third. I like the idea of getting Ryan Clark out there or maybe Timmons.

by Varmint on Nov 24, 2009 1:17 PM EST up reply actions

He did it all last year, why not

I think that could be the missing piece.

Trying to over-protect harrison has cost us 4 games. Woohoo.

+1

Any given Sunday. We've given the Bengals two Sunday's this year.

Ryan Clark aka The Hammer immediately following the game "I would give my left arm to play them again."

But in the same argument protecting him could have saved us some of those games we won. Ya never know.

by phxsteeler on Nov 24, 2009 10:27 AM EST reply actions

Sorry, but YOU'RE ALL WRONG!

You can say all you want about the various players- who should or shouldn’t be playing. It comes down to COACHING. If it didn’t, there’d be no reason to fire guys like Richie Kotite- just blame it all on the players. Mikey recognized that when he took the blame for the loss.
The question is, what does that mean? Does he take the blame because he hired assistants like Arians and Ligashesky (whose special teams have been ranked at the bottom of the league 2 of his 3 years.) Does it mean he’s going to rectify the problem by changing coaches, or shuffling players?
My solution: With the firing of Dick Juron, Bobby April will be available at the end of the season.
Do WHATEVER IT TAKES to get him back here.

by Auggie's dad on Nov 24, 2009 10:55 AM EST reply actions

Absolutely!!!

Put your best players out there and let them hunt!!!

I don’t know the numbers, but do special teams plays result in more injuries than other plays? I dunno.

I’m gonna bet on NO, they don’t. Put your best players out there and let them make huge plays. The point is to WIN, and it seems to me that putting your best players on the field to help you win seems as obvious as humans need oxygen to survive.

by Ragnar808 on Nov 24, 2009 12:09 PM EST reply actions

I'm willing to bet no too, but

The OL looked gassed late, partially the result of running so many plays, but also at least partially due to the high percentages of pass plays. Same goes for anyone on kick coverage. The chances for injury only increase as much as the percentage of overall snaps played, but the same can be said for fatigue. Most of kick coverage units are reserves who see situational action and don’t play every down. I’m surprised they still use Taylor, since he has to cut loose on ST and then line up on the opposing teams best receiver the next play.

by chicos_pants on Nov 24, 2009 12:32 PM EST up reply actions

Actually, I think you're both wrong

A few weeks back, we had a six pack, fanpost, or a something where the research done regarding multiple concussions was once again brought out into the light. Either the post or the article made mention of there being a high number of injuries on ST.

I could be remembering it incorrectly, but that is what I recall. I did a quick search trying to find the post, but there’s been so much activity lately…

by Varmint on Nov 24, 2009 1:26 PM EST up reply actions

yup

It’s true. Most injuries occur on kickoffs. Most head injuries and concussions that is.

Thanks

I wasn’t sure if it was “most injuries”, or “most head injuries”.

by Varmint on Nov 25, 2009 4:03 PM EST up reply actions

Improvement Needed!

Any way you look at the kickoff coverage has to be swift. One play (Chief’s return for TD) does not loose a game but was a critical piece overall. If we wait much longer it will be too late.

Or is it already too late? A loss to a 2-7 team and all of a sudden, instead of being tied with Cincy at 7-3 we are on the outside of the playoff picture at 6-4 behind JAX and believe it not DEN! Head to Head does not count in a 3 way tie!

FIX IT NOW or the Steeler Nation will be watching the post season without the Steelers.

special teams are important

but is it essential for a winning program?
the Trib had an article last week that showed the Steelers getting some company from the Colts
http://pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/sports/steelers/s_653697.html

teams have finite resources/time/player personnel; you choose your battles, and while you want everything to be a1 stuff, it’s simply impossible. Even great teams have weak areas, they are great because they win despite those weak areas.

The difference

Peyton gets them in the endzone, instead of giving up pick-6’s.

good find

It says there that in their respective careers Boiman has “recorded 57 special teams tackles” and that Ivy “has registered 96 special teams tackles.”

for making him crap himself last year.
