Polamalu for MVP

We're getting a brutal reminder of what our secondary was like in the post-Woodson, pre-Polamalu days. We've recently won without Ben and without Parker. But our pass defense becomes as porous as Swiss cheese in a mice colony when Troy doesn't play. We're dangerously dependent on just this one guy, which is why I think he is literally our most valuable player.

The pass D

was really good until the 61 yarder was allowed, because of missed tackles and no one got the call from the sideline.

really good?

We were playing the freakin’ Chiefs here, not the Pats. We gave up 2 passing TD’s to one of the worst teams in the league.

On their only two drives they had any success on...

They had a bunch of non-ball moving drives earlier in the game.

two drives was enough

We let Matt Cassel score two passing TD’s against us. We made Chris Chambers, who got cut by the Chargers, look like a stud.

Look, I think our defense is generally pretty good, but I’ve also noted that we’ve lost to a couple of really bad teams this year, and that in both games, Polamalu was out.

by TURFgeek on Nov 25, 2009 2:38 PM EST up reply actions

I suppose...

But if I remember correctly, one of the TD drives was off of the tip pick by Heath. I chalk that one up to momentum. They were jacked up because that was the first oppurtunity they had to do anything since the opening kick.

The other was bad, no doubt. But we’re not going to totally stop everybody all the time. That’s not realistic. Even bad teams put one together from time to time. Something about blind squirrels finding a nut. At some point it happens.

Polamalu being out didn’t help the situation that’s for sure.

Swiss Cheese?

More like a good block of aged parmagianno regianno. The Swiss Cheese D is number 1 in the NFL in total D without football Jesus. The Steelers are 5th in the NFL in pass yards per attempt at 6.4.

Clever

But that doesn’t refute the point I was making. When Polamalu is out, we tend to lose games with last minute drives. That proves his value. It also proves that the rest of our secondary is suspect.

by TURFgeek on Nov 25, 2009 12:10 PM EST up reply actions

It does prove his value, but.....

Our secondary without TP has limited the Bengals to 173 and 157 yards passing, the Chargers to 235 yds, the Bears to 232 yds, and the Chiefs to 214 yds.

I cant say the secondary is playing poorly, Troy is just that much of a game changer.

as I said above

You can look at yards, I’ll look at win-loss.

Bengals — 2 losses — first loss was giving up a late TD
Bears — loss to Jay Cutler in his worst season
Chiefs — loss to Matt Cassel in his worst season
Chargers — won, but allowed two passing touchdowns in the 4th quarter

by TURFgeek on Nov 25, 2009 2:35 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with you about TP

But you could just as easily blame James Harrison for the late game meltdowns, since, according to Yahoo, he doesn’t have any sacks while we’re in the lead.

Just sayin…

Troy or Ben

The thing about Troy is that he adds an x-factor that changes the whole defense. He is truly special. Think of all of the amazing plays he has made in his limited playing time this season. How many other safeties defend both the run and the pass so well? His value to this defense has grown with each passing week. There are other outstanding players on the D but no one like him, who changes the whole way an opposing team prepares.

That being said, where would we be without Ben? He has had an outstanding season. Scares me to death to think of how the team would fare without him the rest of the way. Who thinks we’d have ghost of a chance in B’more with either Batch or Dixon behind center?
