This is likely good news in terms of the health of Ben Roethlisberger. If the Steelers had went after a veteran like a Jeff Garcia it would of probably indicated that the Steelers were concerned about Big Ben's health.

Palko's Dad

This guy has some serious pull in Pittsburgh. First he gets him the starting job at West Allegheny. Then he gets him a scholarship to Pitt where he plays ahead of Flacco, now a stint with the Steelers. His dad must be calling all the shots in Steel Town

by TheCommish on Nov 24, 2009 1:55 PM EST reply actions

Sorry commish but I have to disagree...

Palko earned his starting QB status at West Allegheny(I know because I watched him play) and he carried the team on his shoulders all the way to a state championship. He also Played well above the line at the University of Pittsburgh(I know because I watched him play there also). He is a great kid who has an outstanding work ethic and he is also a fierce competitor. Nothing was given to him ,so you really shouldn’t undermine his accomplishments by insinuating that his Dad is the person responsible.

G. Dulac said the Steelers will sign a LB today and cut one of its current group

I think that means we will be saying bye-bye to Patrick Bailey.

Tomlin said the team worked out 2 special teams players and have another one flying in today for a workout. Has anyone seen anything on who those players might be?

Also, he seemed a little angry at the press conference and said his players should be the same and “edgy” since this is Ravens week. He said the team needs to cut out turnovers and create more turnovers. I wonder if he will reign in Ben and Arians and try to run the ball a little more? Well, one can only hope.

I think it also says something about Dixon.

I thought it was self explanatory. Dixon has apparantly been showing some fine form on the practise field, and this move backs that up

Yeah we talked about that before. Definitely shows the coaches have confidence in DD (Ha I just realized we have BB and DD). Anyway, that is good stuff heading into the future.

They should put Charlie Batch and Injured Reserve and open up a roster spot to sing someone else

They can sign someone to help on Special Teams, like a DB

And go with 2 QBS

Maybe they’ll wait until after the surgery when they’ll know the length of absence before making a decision.

The bills have been pretty completely boned by injuries this year. Far worse than any other team I can think of.

Steelers work out DE/LB Marcus Howard

http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Wilson-Source-Steelers-try-out-Marcus-Howard.html

I think the Steelers could very well sign this guy and cut LB Patrick Bailey. He was a 5th round pick by the Colts this past year and had 1.5 sacks and 8 special teams tackles. At 6’0, 240 lbs, he was the fastest linebacker at the combine when he ran a 4.45 40-yard-dash. I say sign him up and give him a helmet. Scouting report below:

Georgia DE/OLB Marcus Howard Scouting Report
Height: 6-0, Weight: 237, 40 Yard Dash: 4.42

Strengths: Terrific natural athlete with a great frame…elite burst off the line…great closing speed…a natural pass rusher…uses his hands well with good pass rushing moves…strong tackler and hard hitter…lateral quickness to chase plays down from the backside…huge upside…

Weaknesses: Lacks the bulk to play defensive end in the NFL…not strong enough at the point of attack to really play defensive end…is a bit of tweener…high bust factor any time you ask a player to change positions…was his 2007 season a fluke?…does he have the instincts to play OLB?…may only be a situational pass rusher…

Overall: Marcus Howard is a tough projection, as he originally committed to Georgia as a linebacker but moved to defensive line early in his career. However, he lacks the bulk to really play defensive end at the NFL level, making a move to a pass rusher position in a 3-4 defense likely. His pass rushing skills were evident in his final career game, a dominate performance against Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl. Some teams may consider Howard for a rotational end position, similar to prospects Mark Anderson or Brian Robison in recent years. In the end, Howard’s high upside rushing the passer makes him an attractive prospect.

SI.com 2008 Draft Profile

BIOGRAPHY: Moved into the starting lineup as a senior and posted career-high numbers of 41/12/10.5. Sophomore-year totals included 24/1.5/0.

POSITIVES: Explosive defender who.s charging up draft boards. Athletic, fast in every direction, and plays with a good degree of quickness. Explodes off the snap with a terrific first step, gets leverage on opponents, and rarely off his feet. Can flatten off the edge, immediately change direction, and pursue from the back side with speed. Deceptively strong for his size, keeps his feet moving on contact, and plays with discipline. Fast out to the flanks and shows ability making plays in reverse if used in space.

NEGATIVES: Lacks size and bulk and easily blocked by large opponents. Marginally productive until last season.

ANALYSIS: Howard topped a terrific senior campaign with an outstanding performance at the combine. Mainly lined up in a three-point stance at Georgia, Howard is likely to be stood up over tackle at the next level and projects to linebacker in a 3-4 alignment.

PROJECTION: Early Third Round

Another thing about this week…the steelers will roll with 2 QBs, which leaves another roster spot open.

Steelers to sign veteran LB Rocky Boiman for special teams

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/09328/1016069-100.stm

Okay, let’s see whose head will role. I imagine it is Patrick Bailey. I would still hope that they keep Marcus Howard’s name on speed dial. The Steelers need some young 3-4 OLB to groom. How much do you guys think this move will help?

PG reports they intend to sign ex-ND LB Rocky Boiman...

..a seven year NFL veteran and special teams player.

Tyler Palko ain’t exactly my heart’s desire – even as a practice squad guy – and I’m wondering if they’re not working quietly to see what Tampa Bay wants for Lefty. It’s one thing to come hat in hand the day after a game where two QB’s go down…and something else when things settle down. Maybe we can get Lefty for a seven or six.

I also believe we’ve seen our good friend Homestead Charlie take his last snap as a Steeler. He’s a great guy, a great team player, clubhouse gold, and more. But instead of Batch, the letters on the back of his uniform should say FRAGILE. He’s part of the family, but I think his playing career is over.

Don’t worry. He’ll be with the Steelers next year after Tampa Bay cut him in the offseason after refusing to pay him a $3.5M roster bonus to be their 3rd QB.

Steelers make roster moves

Steelers Make Roster Moves, Sign Boiman and Ivy

PITTSBURGH ─ The Steelers today announced the addition of veteran LB Rocky Boiman and CB Corey Ivy to their active roster. Financial terms of the one-year deals were not released.

Boiman (6-4, 242), an eight-year veteran from Notre Dame, was originally selected by the Tennessee Titans in the fourth round (133rd overall) of the 2002 NFL Draft. He played with Tennessee from 2002-05 and was in training camp with Tennessee in 2009 before being waived on Sept. 4. Boiman played with the Indianapolis Colts from 2006-07 and with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2008. He has registered 197 tackles on defense, 1.5 sacks and forced three fumbles during his NFL career. Boiman has also recorded 57 special teams tackles.

Ivy (5-9, 180), a nine-year veteran from Oklahoma, originally signed with the New England Patriots and an undrafted rookie in 1999. He made the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ roster in 2001 and played with Buccaneers through 2004. Ivy played in 2005 with the St. Louis Rams and from 2006-08 with the Baltimore Ravens. He was in training camp with the Cleveland Browns in 2009, but was released prior to the regular season. Ivy has recorded 209 tackles, 9.5 sacks and three interceptions during his career. He has registered 96 special teams tackles.

The Steelers also announced the addition of OG Jonathan Palmer to the team’s practice squad. Palmer (6-4, 336) was on the Steelers’ practice squad from December 12 – 26, 2007, and was in training camp in 2009 with the Carolina Panthers. He originally signed with the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted rookie out of Auburn in 2007.

The Steelers made room on their active roster for Boiman and Ivy by releasing second-year LB Donavan Woods and sixth-year CB Keiwan Ratliff. Ratliff signed with the Steelers as an unrestricted free agent this past May. Woods was recently activated from the Steelers’ practice squad on Nov. 17.

Room was made for Palmer on the Steelers’ practice squad when the team released RB Justin Vincent. Vincent had spent time on the Steelers’ practice squad from 2007-09.

My take

Is that Bailey was the Steelers ROY, last year. And last year, Bailey was a special teams monster…maybe monster is generous, but he played well. I think the Steelers are holding out hope that he will find that fire again. But I REALLY would like to see Woods at least make it back to the PS.

Steelers have 4 players that play nothing but special teams

Boiman, Ivy, Bailey, & Logan. Now, if they give up another touchdown, just mail in the “eeffiinnn” season and let’s look forward to the draft.

by datruth4life on Nov 24, 2009 5:06 PM EST reply actions

Question

Do most other teams KR or PR play on kickoff coverage? Does Sproles?

I mean this guy is so damn short, can he even see where he’s supposed to be going? And apparently he’s not going to catch anyone from behind either.

I think Tomlin said something last week in his PC that most special teams (kick coverage) guys are 6’+ and weigh around 240-250. This just doesn’t sound like Logan’s body type. A

Am I out of bounds on this line of thinking? (Maybe a little pun intended)

by Silverback92 on Nov 24, 2009 6:04 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe they've decided a flea is okay for returning kicks...

..but not for covering them.

If I never see Logan on a coverage team, it’ll still be too damned soon. It’s not fair to ask a 150-pound guy to try to cover kickoffs.

But he’s been a helluva step up from Dookie and Gary Russell in the return game.

I would kill everyone in this room for a drop of sweet beer.

I don't think any special teams roster adjustments matter

as long as we have the worst special teams coach in history

by TURFgeek on Nov 24, 2009 6:23 PM EST reply actions

I don't think the special teams coaches were the ones who cut Madison....

…the blame also goes to CT and the rest of the front office.

Deciding who to keep and who to let go is always a gamble. They were geniuses last year when the ST’s were vastly improved. This year, they crapped out with the roster moves.

I would kill everyone in this room for a drop of sweet beer.
