Around SBN: Raiders' GM Begins The Purge

What Steeler from 70s would you like to see playing on the team now in 2009?

If I could pick one player to see play on this current team it would be Jack Lambert! Can you imagine him in the middle of our linebackers? This give me chills just thinking about it. This man was what football was all about for me. the intensity he played with was unmatched.

There would be now 4th quarter letdowns. Could you imagine what he would do to players like TO and Winslow?  Dare to dream!!

I’ll take Troy over any safety besides Donny Shell

Rev 2

Ok, I’ll take Heath and Hines too, but Hines would have to be the 3rd reciever.

Mel

I think Mel Blount would be a bit of an upgrade over the current corners, and from what I recall, he actually made the interception when the ball hit him right in the hands

None of them

They are too old. :)

Mean Joe

Lambert is a great pick, but we already have the #1 defense against the run, so I’d go with Mean Joe. He’d play at Aaron Smith’s spot since he’s out with an injury. Imagine he and Deebo rushing the QB – WOW!

My next pick would be Mel Blount. He can catch the ball, hit hard, and cover. INTs won’t bounce off his hands. Also, he needs the game check with his tax issues – give him a call!

Roy Gerela

of course I’m joking

All of the special teams guys

If you buy a foreign made product you give money to a person who will not be buying an American made produdt that you get paid to make. Think about it next time you're at the store.

That's Funny!

I’d say Bleier, but Arians doesn’t use a fullback either…

Mel Blount

may not be the same corner he once was, considering he wouldn’t be able to deck receivers at will. Still my favourite Steel Curtain player.
I’d say Mike Webster. Greatest centre ever vs Jeff Hartwig…

Steeler from the 70's...

For me, it would HAVE to be Mike Webster…

by DaveBN on Nov 25, 2009 6:13 AM EST reply actions

Geez, where to start...

Only one?

Mike Webster comes to mind. He’d get O-Line in shape.

Swann and Hines on the same team would be fun to watch.

But… I think I would go with Mel Blount. The man who made them change the rule book… Even without the bump, he would still be a shutdown corner.

There is a great story I read recently (I can’t remember now — I think it was in Dan Rooney’s book) about Mel. There was some kid who the Steelers had in for a try out and he had this amazing vertical leap.

As part of his interview, he did a jump and a sportswriter marked how high he got on the wall. It was something amazing… 45 inches or something like that.

Anyway, they were all gathered around this mark and talking about it as Mel Blount comes out of the training room, in street clothes, carrying a gym bag. He asks them what the fuss is about and they tell him, and point to his mark on the wall.

“That’s his mark?” Mel asks, kicking off his street shoes.

Then he tells the guy to mark his jump — and jumps higher than the previous mark in stocking feet and after a workout.

Mel looked at his mark and told everyone: “That’s the Pittsburgh Steelers’ mark.” and walked out.

Yeah… I think I’d take Mel…
