Steelers Make Roster Moves, Sign Boiman and Ivy

PITTSBURGH ─ The Steelers today announced the addition of veteran LB Rocky Boiman and CB Corey Ivy to their active roster. Financial terms of the one-year deals were not released.

Boiman (6-4, 242), an eight-year veteran from Notre Dame, was originally selected by the Tennessee Titans in the fourth round (133rd overall) of the 2002 NFL Draft. He played with Tennessee from 2002-05 and was in training camp with Tennessee in 2009 before being waived on Sept. 4. Boiman played with the Indianapolis Colts from 2006-07 and with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2008. He has registered 197 tackles on defense, 1.5 sacks and forced three fumbles during his NFL career. Boiman has also recorded 57 special teams tackles.

Ivy (5-9, 180), a nine-year veteran from Oklahoma, originally signed with the New England Patriots and an undrafted rookie in 1999. He made the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ roster in 2001 and played with Buccaneers through 2004. Ivy played in 2005 with the St. Louis Rams and from 2006-08 with the Baltimore Ravens. He was in training camp with the Cleveland Browns in 2009, but was released prior to the regular season. Ivy has recorded 209 tackles, 9.5 sacks and three interceptions during his career. He has registered 96 special teams tackles.

The Steelers also announced the addition of OG Jonathan Palmer to the team’s practice squad. Palmer (6-4, 336) was on the Steelers’ practice squad from December 12 – 26, 2007, and was in training camp in 2009 with the Carolina Panthers. He originally signed with the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted rookie out of Auburn in 2007.

The Steelers made room on their active roster for Boiman and Ivy by releasing second-year LB Donavan Woods and sixth-year CB Keiwan Ratliff. Ratliff signed with the Steelers as an unrestricted free agent this past May. Woods was recently activated from the Steelers’ practice squad on Nov. 17.

Room was made for Palmer on the Steelers’ practice squad when the team released RB Justin Vincent. Vincent had spent time on the Steelers’ practice squad from 2007-09.

I’m not sure Ratliff’s even been in a lot of sub packages lately. I don’t think he’s been active for the last couple of games. Time to check with Wexell…

?Woods gone?

that surprises me

Yea I don’t know why they got rid of Donovon Woods

He was on the Practice Squad in the beginning of the year

Hopefully Woods finds his way back to the PS. Think he has some good upside.

This special teams thing is scaring me a bit. I know it’s been below the line, but do we need to make wholesale changes? I guess Tomlin and staff are turning over more than just rocks at this point. Let’s hope it works.

Wholesale changes? Wholesale changes?

We’ve given up four kick returns for touchdowns, two in the past two weeks! Most teams in the NFL have yet to give up a single kick return for a touchdown. No other team has given up more than two.

By the way, if we had decent kick coverage, we would probably be 8-2 and in first place in the AFC North.

So yes, I think wholesale changes are in order.

EXACTLY

This is some of the worst coverage in the history of football. That is not hyperbole, they are already breaking Steeler records. Wholesale changes are in order.

Also, why does the comment box on this site not have “Steeler” in its spell-check repertoire?

Corey Ivy's...

Divisional expertise may come in handy. He was with the Ravens and more recently the Browns. That kind of stuff doesn’t hurt.

I just hope this works...

…and we get a positive turnover ratio from here on. We need to create more on defense. You aren’t going to win many games when you give it to the other guy 3 times or more. Ivy and Boiman are like assassins or mercenaries – they are being brought in to eliminate the problem.

Yay!

Hopefully these new signings will make a difference on our kickoff team because we’re last in practically every major category when it comes to kickoff coverage and to think that we were awesome last year in terms of kickoff :( we’ll need all the help we can get against the ravens this weekend cuz injuries are going to kill us!

by JBoyFreshhh on Nov 24, 2009 6:39 PM EST reply actions

Like Ratliff being gone, I hope Lewis & Burnett get more playing time And the willingness to let guys go should be a hell of a motivator for the fringe ST players. Although it’s kind of strange having a former Raven, it’s good that we sign a decent player for information. Jax used to sign former Steelers just for a week and then cut them right after they played us.

I still want harrison back on coverage

To me that seems to be the biggest issue, overprotecting Harrison. When has he been injured? Never. Its probably not possible anyway.

by Mechem on Nov 24, 2009 11:30 PM EST reply actions

Harrison was injured in 2005...

with a high ankle sprain that kept him out of the lineup for a long time.

Second week in a row

someone from the team the Steelers are playing this weekend was signed.
