Ask Baltimore Beatdown
Happy Wednesday BTSC. I am sure Bruce would get around to getting up the weekly question and answer we like to have, but it just seems right that myself gets this one going.
Well this game could not have come sooner enough, for both teams actually. Ravens and Steelers both sit behind the Bengals in the AFC North race right now and all 3 teams are certainly still in the playoff picture if things pan out the way we each want them to. While the Bengals do own first place and have a could resume against both our teams so far this season, they still have work to do if they want to close out the AFC North atop the standings. One of the things they are looking into this week is the game between us.
Sunday night's game brings together 2 teams that are struggling at the moment, with both coming off heart breaking losses. The Steelers have their problems with Special Teams right now and closing out games while the Ravens are having Offensive problems and battling with a weak secondary that has lost a starter. Injuries have certainly hurt both teams, and it is showing in games.
So while we try to beat you and get to 6-4 in the AFC, you will be trying to quite possibly end the Ravens playoff hopes with a win in hostile Baltimore
Lets get this going, be civil and try to figure out what each team is going to do in order to walk away with a victory. Good luck (not really) and please rec'd to keep on the front page. I will try to get to these questions as soon as possible tomorrow, but I expect many member of the Beatdown to answer them as well.
BRING IT!

The last 6 games have definitely been shakey for Joe. I will not call it a slump, yet. We have failed to score an offensive td in the first half in the last 6 games, and I so put some blame on Flacco. He had made some crucial mistakes in crucial parts of games when we have a serious opportunity to put 7 points on the board. However, cam cameron has been horrific for most games, so I put blame on him for most of our difficulties on offense.

Just plain bad decision making
All QB’s have that at times but Joe’s have been costly, with 3 RZ INT’s that could have definitely changed those three games.

Big Ben
After getting in a motorcycle crash, having his appendix removed, and receiving his first pro concussion to start the year in 2006, the national media declared Ben’s season a sophomore slump. I was just wondering when the 4 letter would pick up on that story with Flacco. I realize that your following is no where near as relevent as ours and the they need ratings to let us know that Flacco is not playing well. My best guess is after Flacco stuggles on Sunday night the media will deam it a Sophmore slump. Also because Pittsburgh drives the ratings for networks and NBC has elected to place Baltimore on the national spotlight with them you may hear the term used while on air Sunday night.

Personally I’m worried about the steelers turning around his slump in the 4th quarter. Headlines of “Flacco Fascinating in 30 point 4th quarter comeback” and “Fast Flacco returns two kickoffs for TD in final moments of game” are already making me sick, and they haven’t happened yet.

FYI
Ben’s “Sophomore Slump” resulted in the Steelers winning their fifth SB title. The motorcycle accident and resulting 8-8 season occurred during his third season in the league.

If your team was a shoe. . .
how bad would it smell?
Also:
How does your team look to rebound after they got swept by the Steelers last year?
On a serious note, Do you see either team holding an edge in this game? I mean we both suck and rock at completely random times. I have no clue what to expect from this game, except for violence, lots of violence.
Secondly, since Steeler fandom wants to cut Skippy Reed loose after this season, how do you feel about your kicker situation, and are longer kickoffs really that important?
by Phantaskippy on Nov 25, 2009 4:30 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
We smell like rotten corn chips right now.
But you guys smell like Tony Siragussas jock strap.
We look to beat you, that’s how we plan to overcome last years sweep. But that was LAST year.
Honestly, I reall am unsure who is the better team right now. You guys have the better record but have lost to inferior opponents so far in Chicago and KC. We are 5-5 with all losses being extremely
close. We both do things better than the other and each team needs to capitalize in those areas. This game will come down to who can make the fewest mistakes. And yea it will be extremely violent. By far the game of the week.
As for kickers, I hate reed as well. But I am unsure what the he’ll happened to him. I considered him a top 5 kicker coming into this year based on his ability to hit clutch field goals. Right now, Baltimore is happy with Cundiff, I would hope. 5/6 is very good and even though he missed a field goal that would have helped us keep a lead, the last thing fans should be doing is placing the blame on Cundiff for the loss to Indy. I have mixed feelings about the kick off stuff. 5-10 yards is not too much of a difference to me but it obviously is for the coaches and front office. We needed depth at other positions and it was time we felt to breed a new kicker, but that didn’t work out the way we wanted.

Hauschka was a kid playing a man's game
His competition during Training Camp (FSU’s Graham Gano) is tearing it up in the UFL. Cundiff’s 5 of 6 should have been enough last week but just wasn’t. Indy has Matt Stover, but their punter kicks off and puts a lot of ball into the end zone. Figurs got cut in pre season and went to Detroit then got cut, re-signed elsewhere but who knows now. Good luck w/ Ivy, he can hit but not cover. Didn’t Limas Sweed hand him his lunch last season?

How do you feel about your secondary?
With Washington out your depth is seriously hurting. The Steelers have 3 good receivers and a TE having a career year. Do you think you will be able to stop them all? Which match-up do you feel comfortable about and which do you feel uncomfortable with? I could see Wallace having a field day, but if Sweed gets some reps I could see him having a circus day (probably won’t happen).
Also, what beer are you going to be buying me for the tailgate? I drink anything from Natty to Chimay.

I actually like our secondary better
with Lardarius Webb starting over the recently IR’d Fabian Washington. Our depth is thinner but we have been playing solid defense the last four games. However our offense has regressed. Not worried at all about Wallace, Sweed and even Miller, although all are solid and could contribute. Our nemesis has always been Ward on the key third down conversions that Ben finds while scrambling, or Holmes for that game breaking play. Hoping that his head is still ringing so he can’t run around and pick us apart but if he does, it’ll be a long day. However, if he gives up the rock to us, the tables could easily be turned.

Sweed will get a big play
Sweed goes to the Baltimore sidelines for a catch, and it goes off of his fingertips… he falls on Coach Harbaugh and then lies there moaning trying to get sympathy.
It takes them 3 minutes to pull Sweed of of the stunned Harbaugh who then cannot call any plays because he keeps reliving the trauma of his near-death, smothering experience.

Here’s a big hint, run man on Ward with an old crafty veteran. Ward won’t run past anyone these days, he outfoxes young studs though, and he will kill a zone defense. Since he started slowing down he just makes his living killing zone defenses.

Watch it man
He already has 1 kickoff return this year for a TD and has been on the brink of many others. The way your special teams is playing right now, “Lardass” Webb might just destroy you this week. Hopefully Twinkle Toes Reed does not picture Webb as a Towel Dispenser, because then we would stand absolutely no chance to win this game. That man scares me with his tackling ability.

And do you feel you’ll be able to get to Ben this week?
by Freddyd on Nov 25, 2009 3:01 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Losing Suggs hurts of course
Not only will we miss his pass rush, but Suggs is a great run defender for us. I think we will be able to get to Ben, but that is because of him holding the ball too long. Getting to Ben is going to rely on our secondary as well. We are going to need to stick with your very talented group of WR just long enough to get around the edge on Ben.

ravens
This weekend was so messed up and the AFC North is so jacked I can’t even get in the zone to talk schmack to our beatdown friends.
And I’m TERRIFIED about this game coming up. This just seems like storm clouds are brewing. And malor runs his mouth way more when the ravens are winning (see week 3 this year)
I don’t know… uh… is Suggs gonna play or not? Didn’t a rookie replace him? What’s your opinion on that? Who else do you think can apply pressure? Who will be exploiting Ramon Foster in his first start?
Are you happy that Troy is out or do you guys wish you could get revenge on him ending your season last year?
"It was an attrition football game and you know we like that."
by showtime on Nov 25, 2009 4:59 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Dude, I am terrified of this game as well.
Even without Troy, I still think you guys are an extremely dangerous football team. IMO, you have the most under-appreciated WR group in the league. I was very high on Mike Wallace coming out of Ole Miss and when he went to the Steelers, I knew right away that this guy was going to be a major problem for years to come. The dude is a baller.
I am not here to “run my mouth.” I did it in the first 3 weeks because of all the mouths that were ran during the off season directed towards me. You guys were 1-2 and miserable, while we were 3-0 and loving life. How could I not flaunt it. I promise you I will not make a loss any worse for the select few I respect on this blog. But the many idiots around BTSC and SB Nation in general, if they talk and don’t back it up, you can bet they will feel the wrath of the #1 troll this side of the Mississippi.
Suggs is not playing, at least to my knowledge. 2nd round OLB Paul Kruger from New Mexico is starting in Suggs spot. We have been very high on Paul for his non stop motor and speed off the edge. Unfortunately, our LB group is so deep that Paul was not going to see the field unless he played Special Teams or because of an injury. Both did not happen in the first half of the season.
Watch out for OLB, Jarrett Johnson. He is our sack leader right now and having his best career as a Raven. He is playing at a pro-bowl level and destroying everyone in his path. If he gets to Ben, it could be very bad. Who is Ramon Foster? Lol. That should answer how we handle him.
Most importantly……
Are you happy that Troy is out or do you guys wish you could get revenge on him ending your season last year?
Hear me out. Of course I am glad Troy is not playing. That gives us an edge. However, I stated after your 2nd loss to the Bengals that I really hoped Troy would play this game. I am in dyer need to shut all of Steeler Nation up after what you guys did to us last year. And in order to do that, I want to beat your team at its best. Unfortunately, the great Troy Polamalu will not be playing this week, but the Ravens will be missing key defenders as well. So there is really no excuses in the loss here for either team.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

yeah I predicted the ravens secondary wouldn't hold up until our late November match-up and low and behold
they put old fabian on the IR. Then again bums love to have career days against the Steelers. And of course all you have to do is look at the Madden Curse to see where we were headed this season. Curse you Madden Curse! And curse you Madden you old Steelers nemesis! A curse so evil could only flow from so dark a heart.
About running your mouth, I’m just breakin’ your balls dude. I wouldn’t have it any other way. You’re downright friendly these days compared to the Queen City trolls we’ve both been dealing with. Actually, they’ve been pretty good on here since that last abortion of a football game, but I’ve met more bengals “fans” the last two weeks than in the last two years. And they love to talk about football now. Bums.
Well this is the raven’s chance to win a prime time game against the Steelers, and they get it at home just like they cried for. I’ll be one step from the looney bin the whole time. It’s gonna be nasty.

Ray Rice
has been playing lights out.
The Steelers run Defense has been just as solid as ever this season, surprising even with Aaron Smith out.
How much success do you expect him to have, and how much do you think the gameplan will revolve around him.

by Steeler_ on Nov 25, 2009 9:19 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I definitely expect him to get around 125 total yards this week
He is just that good. He tore apart the Vikings run defense and pass defense, which can be just as good if not better than yours at times. In all honesty, its not Ray Rice running the ball you should be most worried about, it is him catching the little 5 yard dump off pass. I have yet to see him tackled by the first defender this year.
He has the ability each and every time he catches a pass to break it for a huge gain. The problem for you guys is that you really have no one to cover him without Troy, in my opinion. A LB will be too slow to stop his first move, and he is WAY too strong for a CB to bring him down. Hopefully Ryan Clark doesn’t reenact his hit on McGahee on Rice this week.

Timmons can cover Rice if he's at full strength

by showtime on Nov 26, 2009 12:33 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
If Timmons thinks he has ankle problems now...
wait until Ray Rice jukes him onto the sidelines with his moves. No way Timmons stays with him unless he hits him before he gets out of the backfield. Problem with Rice getting 125 yards is that Flacco targets him way too much, neglecting to give solid looks downfield and therefore the dink and dunk doesn’t get big plays and you can contain it if he goes that route.

I'm worried about the screen pass
ravens always seem to set some good screens and if Rice can gets some blocks, that could spell trouble. He does appear to be a good player.
Mendenhall will have something to prove Sunday night, that’s for sure. He has his legs under him now though. Hopefully the ravens will underestimate him. Fast Willie could never get going against the ravens D.

125 yards, are you guys gonna let him return a kick? Cause that would do it alone.
Otherwise that’s a lot of passing yards. Your run game looks great, FO stats love you, but the Steelers are still far and away the best run defense. Our LB’s haven’t been able to cover anyone recently so Rice in the pass game could be big.
by Phantaskippy on Nov 26, 2009 9:21 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Well considering he is gaining over 100 yard each of the last 7 games
I actually think 125 is being nice. That man breaks a 40-50 yard play off each time. And again, I said he would probably do it RECEIVING, not running. I see Rice having about 65 yards on 17 carries and 50-80 yards off of 6-8 receptions.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

as MaLoR predicts, of both rushing and receiving. Doubtful he gets 100 off of oyu but will probably get more receiving than rushing.

If Rice can average over 3.5 a carry I’m picking the Ravens to win. Flacco can throw all day without worrying about picks, and if the run game is getting reliable yards we will be in trouble.
How do you feel about the Steelers run game, we are prone to getting stuffed and then hitting a big gain, which is a bit of the Ravens run defense story so far, no consistent yardage, but they will give up some longer runs.
Also who is your fastest corner (cough*Mike Wallace*cough), and how do you cover Heath? I could easily see this game ending up with a big score.
by Phantaskippy on Nov 26, 2009 5:46 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Ive always liked Mendenhall
I thought he was going to be the 2nd best RB coming out of that draft (Rice is the best). He is strong and hits the hole pretty well, when he wants to. I cannot see him doing that well though. He is good, but not good enough to make an impact running the ball (I hope). And we have given up major yards to only 2 backs this year, Benson and Peterson, who look to be two of the best backs in the league right now.
I hope to see Lardarius Webb on him. 3rd round draft picks going against each other. Mike Wallace is a beast and if one player is going to get that game breaking play, it will be Wallace. In all honesty though, I am more worried about Holmes in the passing game. Also worried about Heins Ward just man handling Foxworth and just being too physical for him.
As for Heath, no idea how we will cover him. I would say Jarrett Johnson, but we need him to blitz. I guess I will just hope and pray that he does not do to well.

6-4 in the AFC
They lost their only NFC game so far.
I guess he is looking at tie breakers, which would realistically only involve the Steelers/Ravens head to head for a wild card spot. I guess Jacksonville if they lost to New England could work too. But that would still require Jacksonville losing to NE and Indy just to get to 4 AFC losses, any more than two losses and they are out of the picture too. I guess it is still nice to have or something.

Happy thanksgiving
Mr MaLor, good to see you around.
Questions.
How much of the struggles the Ravens have had recently on offense have to do with the lack of a “game-breaker” at the WR position?
Why have the Ravens stopped using Leron Mclain as much as last year? He seems to have been relegated to more of a blocker role.
What is your assesment of the Ravens O-line play so far and particularly, do you think that they’ll have to keep extra blockers on Harrison’s side?
It all starts in the trenches.

Thanks bud
I do account much of the Ravens offensive problems to not having a game breaking WR. We have started to rely way too much on Rice, and any day that your RB is your top receiving option, you know there is a problem. Mason is still solid, but this offense has players around it that want to explode, not play conservative. Joe has too good of an arm to not have someone who an get down field in a hurry. A guy like Brandon Marshall, Boldin or Edwards would have been a great fit for Baltimore.
Really, we are still trying to figure out why we never see LeRon anymore. It is supposed to be because he has moved to a blocking role with the departure of Lorenzo Neal, which many of us felt was a dumb move. He has started to get back in the role of carrying and catching the ball, but not enough that we would like. We have even failed to use him on goal line situations, and LeRon is arguably the best 1 yard back in the league.
The Ravens O-Line has been spectacular for the most part this year, particularly in pass protection. Run blocking has been solid as well, but the pass blocking has been great, especially from the tackles Jared Gaither and Michael Oher. They have to be the best duo in the league. Last week, they were able to hold Robert Mathis and Dwight Freeney both to zero sacks the whole game. Dumerville was man handled and so was Antwan Odom. They are looking great. The place where we need to be better at is penalties. Matt Birk has been called for some dumb penalties this year and and Michael Oher has had multiple false starts. But if you were to ask for a grade, I would say a B+.

Thanks
This will indeed be an interesting match-up, as it always is between these two teams.
With Baltimore’s O-line playing spectacular and neggating the Steelers’ pass-rush, and without Troy, Baltimore may be able to have some success throwing the ball. I really like Flacco, he actually reminds me a lot of Big Ben. He is able to scape the rush and keeps his eyes down the field, has a cannon of an arm and is poised.
BTW I totally agree on LeRon being the best 1 yard back in the league… last year the Steelers struggled to run anything on short distance downs, and remember watching LeRon and wishing he where wearing gold instead of purple.
I, despite every cell in me being disgusted, favor the Ravens to win this one. It seems to me that this year the Ravens have that killer instinct more than do the Steelers, and probably those type of intangibles are what make the difference in this type of very evenly matched teams.
good weekend.

Last week
both Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis were barely mentioned as Flacco had great protection. The key to the Steelers secondary playing well is the pass rush in front of them. If we can slow down Harrison and friends, then Flacco should be able to find receivers regardless of their so-called average abilities. However, the key will be Flacco targeting a covered receiver as he has done way too many times.

dont tkink so..
Pitt will WIN this game..as long as we dont Give the game away…stupid turnovers, No KO returns for TDs..and of course, BB stays healthy! Ravens will not run against us, their receivers are only average…they give up lots of big plays and hines and CO will expoit that

PIt will also win if the ravens decide to go bowling instead. Very bold predictions indeed!

The stars that will align...
are Harrison and Woodly dancing around Flacco’s helmet like little sugar plum fairy’s all night! Tis’ the season to put a little somethin’ in the backfield! (Serious note: Here’s hoping both teams leave this game without serious injury.)

Ben's sitting out fo rhis health
is the right move and all players should take a lesson from this decision. I do wonder how the decision came down. Was it the team telling him no and he wanted to go? Or was it the doctors forcing the team to accept it? Love to know but regardless of what is put out inthe media, we might never know the truth Teams want to win and the NFL wants its stars on the field and have demeaned the head inujury issue for years.
