Might see Dixon on Sunday night??

According to nfl.com, Ben might opt to sit out for the big game against the Ravens. Now this decision will be made on saturday, but how big will that be if Dennis Dixon got his first start against a stout Raven's Defense? (Although they haven't played to the level that they're usually known for...but heck neither have we this season) But this will be a big AFC North game and the winner will have the upper hand on the other. What are your guys thoughts about Dennis Dixon possibly getting the start? Do you guys forsee a victory if he plays and ben sits?

That's how Ben did it.

It was his rookie year. Tommy-Gun out…. Ben stepped up and the rest they say, is history.

You’ll probably be flipping out that the 22 guys on defense can’t stop the steelers.

Dixon's stats

12/27, 114 yards, 2 ints.

Oh wait, he wears black and gold, here are the real stats. 21/26 285 yard, 3 tds.

Saw that tonight also......

……and nearly got physically ill. This is no way for Dixon to start his career. Those birds will have their ears (okay they don’t really have ears) pinned back. I’d like at least two more lombardis during the BB era, so understandable if they sit him. I just wish he’d made up his mind earlier in the week so that Dix could have taken all the snaps – not that he’s really be ready anyway…….also would have been nice in my pick’em pool to have this information.
Whatever the situation, our guys will line up and play………gotta say though too – this may be just the thing to bring that edge back to the team – win or lose, i say the boys will battle hard for Coach Tomlin.
Ben – do whatever is best for your long term health!

by SteelerNorth on Nov 28, 2009 2:21 AM EST reply actions

Whatever it takes.

There is too much season left to bring Ben back if he isn’t ready (he probably will start though) and risk a much more serious injury that could bench him down the stretch. I clearly remember Ben’s rookie year and having a mild stroke when “the new kid” was going to be starting QB for Maddox. Troy (IMHO) came back too soon. If Ben comes back and gets creamed (like we know he will) the result could affect our season (and post-season) more than seeing Dixon start and do so-so on Sunday.

the guy that's reporting Ben is a game time decision

is the same moron who reported that casey hampton was going to get cut during the preseason. Ben is starting on Sunday night.

by schnifin on Nov 28, 2009 2:42 AM EST reply actions

Probably a ruse

I think they just want to make the Ravens spend some time preparing for Dixon.

by MarkJoel66 on Nov 28, 2009 8:13 AM EST reply actions

+1

This is typical Tomlin style injury report. He kinda annoys me sometimes with the belichickian ways of the injury listings.

But I think Ben plays and plays just fine.

by Mechem on Nov 28, 2009 10:26 AM EST up reply actions

I'm really surprised

Ben… being Ben… I almost expected him to report he had a hair-line fracture in his skull but was going to be out there because he was a competitor…

by MarkJoel66 on Nov 28, 2009 11:18 AM EST up reply actions

Right

Im sure he’s gonna tell people next month there was a blood clot surging towards his brain from the concussion that almost killed him but fortunately somebody handed him a choco-taco and it widened the artery saving his life.

by Mechem on Nov 28, 2009 3:15 PM EST up reply actions

exactly!

this is Ben being Ben! Nobody really thinks he will sit this one out…Especially since he had a good week of practice with NO ill effects…

by nycsteelerfan on Nov 28, 2009 8:41 AM EST reply actions

Yeah I thought Ben said he was definitely playing

So for now, unless Ben or Tomlin say otherwise, Ben is starting.

Start Dixon

Papers today report that Ben is having second thoughts. If he’s having doubts then I think he should sit. His long-term health is more important. Plus confidence is essential to his game, and if he’s not sure then he shouldn’t play. I don’t like our chances with DD in there — on the road, at night, on national TV, with the Ravens gunning for revenge. But can you imagine what a boost it would be to the season if we could somehow pull it out with Dixon at the helm?

It would be like Brodie Croyle almost leading the chiefs over the ravens, or the chiefs beating the steel…crap.

What Paper?

I have read the Post Gazette, Tribune Review and Washington PA Observer. No mention in any paper I read about Ben having “second thoughts” about playing. Is that on your rolling papers Citizen?

Ben taking hits

We all know Ben takes alot of hits, but a rookie starting at left guard for Chris Kemoeatu? The man who’s supposed to pull to the right on practically every run play? I forsee possibly alot of sacks and a quiet running game from us, but hopefully we step it up cuz if you guys all watched the bengals and chiefs game, ben looked like he had no fire left. He just seemed like he didn’t even wanna be there…

by JBoyFreshhh on Nov 28, 2009 11:15 AM EST reply actions

He looked fine to me in the KC game

I think he was just frustrated that the team was losing in the KC game. He had an excellent game going until that RZ pick which I still think was somebody hitting his arm.

by Mechem on Nov 28, 2009 3:14 PM EST up reply actions

KC game

He didn’t have any fire in his look though. You could tell that the steelers came into that game thinking that it would be an easy game and it got to them. Enough about Ben…Its DD’s time to shine!

Question is...

Who’s the third QB if Ben is out? I would bet Hines Ward. Former college QB, knows the offense… Shoot, at this point, I’d probably trust him before Palko! Still would be weird to see no. 86 behind center wouldn’t it?

by Steelfrog on Nov 28, 2009 2:21 PM EST up reply actions

ward it'd be

It goes Dixon Palko Ward.

I cant remember what game exactly, but i do remember one time Randle El stepped in as QB for like 2-3 plays. I think Ben went down and so did St Pierre or Batch or whoever was #2 that time.

Ward always said he throws worse than Randle El and hence never really touched the QB spot.

I think Palko needs ward more than the QB position does though, so if it goes to Palko, I’m sure we’ll have ward running routes, not taking snaps.

by Mechem on Nov 28, 2009 3:13 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe

But Palko can’t be expected to learn much in three days. Just the terminology is a challenge on such short notice, forget about adjustments and concepts…

by Steelfrog on Nov 28, 2009 5:41 PM EST up reply actions

Ben's to be listed as 3rd QB

This situation likely wouldnt come up then. Seems like Ben’s to be listed at the #3 QB slot, so if worst case scenario occurs, hes technically cleared to play then.

This was the report from ESPN I caught.

by Mechem on Nov 28, 2009 8:54 PM EST up reply actions

Moore

Mewelde Moore was said to get the emergency QB call. If not I think Mcdonald was released today to make room for Palko

by MSsteele on Nov 28, 2009 8:17 PM EST up reply actions

Personally, I'd like to see some wildcat tomorrow

MeMo can throw. Not bombs, but well enough to get the rock to Dixon on a 10 yard screen and let his legs get yardage. So let MeMo get some snaps, and maybe run Wallace in an end around, or a Dixon-Wallace reverse. Something to switch it up a bit now that Ben isn’t playing.

Also, since Dixon doesn’t have the down field arm Ben has, Wallace’s speed will not be a factor, therefore, I want to see him returning kicks/punts. If we don’t need him on offense, what’s it matter if he’s gassed from a big runback?

could be good, deal with it

wev’e beat the ravens 4 of last 5,,,,were not 6/7 better than the ravens,,,,,,without an anomaly game ,,( ie.ben out , dixon start etc.). this might be the best time to loose to them…… ben being out may raise the intensity of the rest of the team and produce the vaporous , indefineable " something" that most fans seem to feel has been missing this year.

although, it screwed the patriots last year(good), you can count on one hand , the times an 11-5 record didn’t make the playoffs. ,,,,,but every year with a third of the season left to play the doomers of all pursuasions speculate that 11-5 won’t make it.

this team wasn’t the best team in the league last yr,,,,,it was super bowl champ cause it was the best team over an eight game stretch. and its not good enough to have been the best team over a 16 game stretch even this yr. but it could be over the 5 game sprint it would take to go 11-5 to make the playoffs.

tomlin, knows this,,,(easy camp)
dick lebeau knows this,,,,,he played straight up dee,,,,for the first part of the season,,,,,he was sand baggin,,,,,,much the same way he sandbagged indianapolis on mon. night in 05 to set up joey porters 2 back to back sacks on manning to win the playoff game. our dee is average but,,,,,,. le beau ‘s a genious with a prodigy safety……. he saves his his game winners for the end of the game and the end of the season,,,,,,he knows they’re finite contrary to what the talking heads say about infinite possibilities of blitz.

our offences is and has been,,, ben( that may be changing some with o=line and rashard, but untill it has,) ben can’t bring us back evrey game all season long,,,,, his cme back win ability is finite also.

but he can for 5- 8 games……some pre season stat nerds web site wrote that we won last year cause we had an abnormal sucess on third down against teams that had abnormal failure on third down . that we’d be 9-7, or 10-6 this year when the averages returned. i think they’re half right ,,,, the other half is that ben some of that himself.

ben can be a bit of a drama queen,,,,but if he needs a cheezy excuse when he rarely doesn’t acheive his and our high expectations,,, il’ll let him have it without notice.

if coach mike wants to throw some misdirection at the ravens ,,, thats good too..

in the mean time, this is the right time to see if dixon can play, if rashard can get past ray, 80 yrds against the ravens would be great, like a buck and a half against anyone else,,, if the team can find the" something" and if we can’t make a 5 game sprint, we don’t deserve i

here comes the steel cat offence. have fun

by steelswine on Nov 28, 2009 8:47 PM EST reply actions

we will see now

im thinking we will see what the team has without ben carrying the offense…can we run? we will see..can the defense step up this year and win us the game? those are the questions to be answered, and is mendy for real or not? can he have a good game against the ravens being the primary focus? the run game still stinks for the most part and now they need it, and i have high hopes for Dixon but against the ravens for his first start….im not very confident

Seriously:

Is there a new disclosure rule?

I am looking forward to seeing Dixon play, and am glad the Ravens didn’t have a week to game plan for him. But wouldn’t have seeing Dixon running on the field for the first series, being a total surprise for the Ravens, have been more affective though? Why did we leak this info?
