Around SBN: How Not To Criticize Tom Brady For The Patriots' Loss

Via Jim Wexell, news that Ben has been experiencing headaches this week and won't play. I haven't found any other confirmation, so take this with a grain of salt for now.

UPDATE: John Clayton confirms, Dixon will start, Palko will be signed and Shaun MacDonald released.

UPDATE 2: Palko signing confirmed on steelers.com.

UPDATE 3: Confirmed on steelers.com, Dixon will start, Ben will be the no. 3 QB.

for what it's worth

I think Ben should sit, it’s worth possibly losing a game or more not to bring him back too early and risk worsening the situation. (not to mention possibly his future mental health)

Agreed

It’s just so tough because if we lose we are basically surrendering the season. But Ben’s long term career is more important than right now.

I think he's right-

Someone’s gotta dig up that poll we had, I think a majority of the people here thought we essentially had a cake schedule, after supposedly having the toughest schedule last year. Some of us were thinking 16-0. I know I was thinking (expecting?) at minimum 14-2. :)

I am pretty sure I said 13-3 at best, but most likely 12-4. Granted that was with a healthy Troy and healthy Ben. I think most predictions are excusable considering how much Troy has been out.

Quick fix never holds.

Patching a problem vs. addressing it at the root. We’ve seen the leaks in different areas (remembering fondly the secondary problems not-so-many years ago when teams would come out throwing 40 & 50 times every game because they knew our secondary was held together with elmers glue and rice paper.) This season clearly illustrates a weakness that the management has to address in the draft and with free agency this off season. Fix it for real this time.

Smart move

As much as I would like to beat the Steelers with Ben at QB, it is not worth risking his season or even career with a team that loves to get after Ben more than any other in the league. Only bad part is, Dennis Dixon has a noodle arm.

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

by Mr MaLoR on Nov 28, 2009 12:02 PM EST reply actions

BIG IF

Well Mr Malor I know you think you are smart but what do you really know about Dennis Dixon? At the Pro Level he is untested which means he can be the next Akili Smith or the next Randall Cunningham. One thing I do know about Dennis Dixon is that (this is my big if) if he does not hurt his knee in his senior year at Oregon he probably wins the Heisman and leads an undefeated Oregon squad to a title. Heis a winner an untested.

Also I think the Steelers needed a shot of reality that Ben can not always sprinkle his magic and win games from behind. We need some thing to rally around to come together as a team and focus to cut our our mistakes. A comfort zone is human nature when you have achieved the ultimate levels of success. Someties you need a wake up call and this is it. Miscues are holding us back. Something that can be fixed.

Good Luck,

I can tell

I follow College Football nearly as much as I follow the NFL, so I know a good bit about Dixon. Their offense was really good when him and Stewart were there and I tried to watch them as much as possible. His scrambling ability is amazing and I do agree that he would have had a legitimate shot at winning the Heisman had he not gotten injured, but I have already gone and watched highlights and his arm does not impress me too much, and that was on the college level.

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

by Mr MaLoR on Nov 28, 2009 12:56 PM EST up reply actions

Could not disagree with you more

I followed Dixon’s production a bit myself. He doesn’t have a rocket, but he does not have a noodle arm. Pennington is a noodle arm, Dixon throws a lot harder than he does. Look at both of their highlight reels. Not even close. And when you consider the year Pennington had in the NFL last year, I think Dixon is just fine.

WOW

Steelers will need to do something they have never been able to do against the BrownRavens. Run the ball.

The O line needs to have the game of their lives against Murderin’ Ray and his bunch of thugs. They will be seething and the crowd will be ultra hostile.

The defense needs to step up and play a 2008 style of “smash mouth” with a take away or two and a couple “splash plays” We could have really used 43 Sunday night.

The special teams needs to play out of character. That means deep kickoffs and punts. Tackle, tackle, tackle.

In the end I agree this is a prudent and smart move not just for the rest of the season but for the rest of 7’s career.

+ 1

This could be the best thing for not only the team, but also for Arians who (I have finally been forced to acknowledge) undervalues the running game. We can’t afford to be of the attitude that runners of the talent of Mendenhall and Parker are just something to do in between throws to our receivers.

The Ravens can be depended upon to be desperate. After all if they can’t beat the Dixon led Steelers at home, they might as well say that their season is over all ready.

On the other hand let’s remember our QB corps isn’t ranked number one in the league for no reason. What a boost if Dixon can pull out a win.

by Ivan Cole (RickVa) on Nov 28, 2009 1:39 PM EST up reply actions

It doesnt matter

We cant run on baltimore. Its not going to happen. We dont have Kemo either.

Arians always calls the Baltimore games like a fuckin retard. He just sends his runner, usually FWP, right into Haloti Ngata’s gaping mouth and just keeps shoving runners up the middle of that brutal defense. Hes a moron.

Now were gonna get a super marty-ball conservative gameplan that’d make Sarah Palin blush, and its gonna suck because nobody will just let Dixon throw the ball.

You CANT alter the gameplan, you have to let the #2 QB know that he is the #1 QB this weekend, and should be treated as such.

by Mechem on Nov 28, 2009 3:18 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

We might have an advantage

There’s no tape on Dixon, Dixon is an elusive QB and may pose a problem as the Ravens have Been preparing for BB. This obviously changes everything, Ive only seen Dixon once in pre-season and they threw him in the game a quater early because of batches injurie and he did just fine, this will also inspire the rest of the team to step up their play

by steelermafia on Nov 28, 2009 12:13 PM EST reply actions

Given how brittle Chuck has become and how physical Ben plays, it’s probably a blessing we have a young, talent QB like Dixon on the roster. That being said, it was going to be a tough game for the Steelers anyway. With Ben, Troy, Aaron Smith, and Kemo out it’s going to be even tougher. I’m not saying the Steelers can’t win, but if they did win it would be one of those huge, cathartic, season saving wins. I think it’s unlikely, but if it did happen it could have a huge psychological effect on the team.

Remember our list of the players that the Steelers could least afford to lose? While there was some disagreement about the positioning of specific players, most everyone agreed that among the more irreplaceable were Big Ben, Troy, and Smith. And, ironically enough, the Steelers travel to Bmore today without either of those three playing.

The smart play is that the steelers will run 70% of the time. Dixon will be expected to hand it off constantly.

Arians loves to pass the ball. Arians loves doing what common sense suggests is unwise. Against the ravens? I can’t say I’ll disagree. I fully expect the steelers to come out passing. No one should be surprised if the steelers ratio is 50/50. If the steelers lose, Arians is going to get his ass handed to him by fans either way, and that’s too bad. If the steelers win, everyone but Arians is going to get the credit.

Anyone else feel the AFC is relatively weak this year?

Jacksonville is having a quiet and less than impressive 6-4 run.

Houston is too inconsistant and I think lack of experience in tough games hurts their chances.

Baltimore is hurting and lackluster on offense aside from Ray Rice. D still playing well enough though

Like you say, Jets, no. Titans having to win out seems very unlikely.

Denver? Giants have been rubbish, but they dominated that game, but whether that was a case of Denver being good or NY being poor we shall see

Overall, I am not impressed with this years Wildcard pool.

Past years requiring 11 wins has no bearing

Blitz is right. Six games left. To get to 11 wins, Balt, Houston, Miami must go 6-0. Jags must go 5-1, Broncos 4-1. Not one of these scenarios is likely. The chances of two of them happening are ridiculous. Maybe, not likely, one wildcard team gets in with 11. Very likely, almost certain, at least one team gets in with 10 or less wins.

Re: Arians

Like steelguy, I hope Arians doesn’t decide to summon the ghost of Woody Hayes and employ the old “three yards and a cloud of field turf” strategy. Playing not to lose doesn’t seem like the way to go. Since no one is going to expect much from the offense now, isn’t this a great opportunity to turn Dixon loose? I have to believe they’ve worked on stuff geared to take advantage of his mobility and skill set. Play-actions, sprint-outs, maybe some zone-read. How much time will the Ravens have had to prepare for Dixon? Hopefully BA will get creative and show Baltimore some stuff they haven’t seen from us all year. It will be especially important to keep them off balance on first down to try to keep us out of 2nd and long when Baltimore can get aggressive with the blitz. I’d screen the hell out of them knowing how eager they’ll be to get after Dixon. All in all, it will be interesting to watch Dixon play, but I’m more interested in how BA handles this. His game-plan will go a long way towards determining how successful Dixon (and thus the Steelers) will be.

I think both the Steelers and Ravens coaching staffs are smarter than most people give credit for

Right after the game, the Steelers are ambiguous about whether Big Ben was concussed, and insist he will play. Then he is listed as questionable, then Dixon is announced as a starter. I think they knew immediately after Big Ben was concussed that he wouldn’t start this game, but didn’t want to give the Ravens a week to prepare for Dixon.

On the Ravens side, however, I am sure that they have been preparing for both scenarios, and have watched some film of Dixon.

We’ll see. Dixon could be a stud in disguise. We’ll have to see how it plays out.

Once. He wanted a starting job, he went to Tampa, where I still think they gave up on him too early in the season. Josh Johnson was rubbish, and Freeman is taking his knocks.

Her we go!!!

I personally am excited as hell about this game, as much as I love BB and Troy, I feel that this may be the exact thing to galvanize this team and force some of the unheralded leaders to step up and lead. We find out who we are through adversity not delight. And lets not all forget that the shitbirds are pretty beat up as well and ray-rays’ bones are startin to creak!! I think some of our young guns step up big and show a glimpse of the futuer!!

I agree

Part of me feels sick to my stomach, but look what happened the last two weeks. Both times the opposing team was missing one or more of their best players, and both times young guys stepped up to the plate and played some quality football. SN believes that we beat ourselves in KC, and there’s a lot of truth to that, but there was some great football played by guys nobody had ever heard of. And having the Ravens off-balance surely isn’t a bad thing either. Honestly, I feel like I can enjoy the game a lot more now, because nobody will blame Dixon for not winning, and I won’t be terrified that Ben is going to get his brains permanently scrambled. Not this week, anyhow. Go Steelers!

+1 momma

All I could think about this week was Ben getting slammed to the ground.

Now it's our chance

We’ve got DD in the backfield and a new spark. Let’s see if our boys rally around him and play their hearts out for him. It’s big time in Baltimore. Defense has got to step it up. Special teams has to show up. We can do this! Let’s go Steelers!!

im super excited for Dixon

Tough spot for him in such a huge game against a rival, so I hope people aren’t expecting too, too much from him. But gosh would it be sweet if he could lead the team to a victory tomorrow.

The question is, are you prepared for the cries of Lord Dixon to start?

If it means a win, I guess I could deal.

LOL

Well I will say this – in an ideal world Dixon plays real well Sunday, particularly in how he gets rid of the ball quickly and still gets big passing plays down the field. Ben could then watch that and maybe do a little more of the same himself so he doesn’t keep taking so many hits.

Of course the one game I get to go to this year

Is the game Ben is out. Damn! Hopefully, DIxon will make it worth my money. I could not bare Ravens fans if the game is a blow out.

Think of it this way, you’ll get a really good look at Dixon.

Truth

And if we do win, that would be very embarrassing for Ravens fans.

Good thing we didn’t play them with Brodie Croyle, we would have been really boned.

Actually, I retract my statement

It really would not be that embarrassing if we lose to you. Yes, missing your 2 best players on your team is tough to overcome, but your defense can definitely still win you games. If they get turnovers, you will have a great chance to win. As long as Dixon does not turn the ball over (which I cannot imagine happening) you should have a legit shot.

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

Dixon's Dink and Dunk will win us this game

He can do what Ben and Arians couldn’t. I think having Dixon in gives us more than a fighting chance. D and D will beat the ravens, and allow Mendenhall some bruising runs.

If BB was in, he would be throwing all day, and that may or may not win- we just don’t know these days. Let’s give the guy a rest.

I think he’s going to have too hard a time reading the ravens defense to consistently D&D.

maybe it's just me

but this makes tomorrow’s game way more interesting to watch – I’m really excited to see what DD can do. I’m not happy that we’re without Ben’s talent, but I’m happy that he and the Steelers are doing the right thing, and erring on the side of caution.

by acrollet on Nov 28, 2009 8:15 PM EST reply actions

Agreed

I’m really a little more excited, even if that excitement could potentially implode into a pit of anguish should they not win.

And I agree with the decision by the way.

I am coming around

I think this is the right call (like the one on Clark – different but the same). We will see what we have in DD. It might go a long way to determining if Batch comes back next year. Maybe the team will play with an edge because they know Ben can’t bail them out. You never know.

Wild Duck Formation

Even the most optimistic of Steelers fans, which I would consider myself to be one, has to admit that this does not look good for the Black and Gold. Dixon, making his first start, on the road, on National TV, against the hated Ravens….I hope the Wild Duck Formation can put up enough points to keep it close and maybe Harrison and Woodley can make a few plays late to win it on defense.

by Heckler's Sports on Nov 28, 2009 8:49 PM EST reply actions

Bad. But maybe not soooo bad.

BB out is huge. More to say on that? Nah.

As far as DD goes…..we all expect more running and I think it’s going to be possible. Suggs is out. Their D wont be as tough. Tough…but not AS TOUGH.

I think they’ll make the passing simple for DD. Quick passing game, run the ball and play action.

Steelers have lots of play makers. DD just needs to play safe and get the ball to our Men of Steel. Ward, Holmes, Wallace, Miller, Mendenhall…….The Ravens will be foolish to relax…….and let’s hope that they DO relax.

HUGE GAME. But all is not lost…..not by a longshot!!!

GO STEELERS!!!

by Ragnar808 on Nov 28, 2009 10:08 PM EST reply actions

OH...

And there could be more pressure on the Ravens to win. They have no BB to deal with, so they’re expected to win. DD and the Steelers are already being talked about how they’ll lose this game.

Ravens lose and they could be demoralized!!!

I hope Dixon does well, but Baltimore will be blitzing him like there’s no tomorrow.
