Pittsburgh Steelers (6-4) @ Baltimore Ravens (5-5) - BTSC Week 12 Open Thread (2nd Half)

Well, things could be worse. A lot worse. The Steelers were down a quick 7 after Baltimore took their opening drive for a touchdown. Dennis DIxon and the offense leveled it at 7 with two gorgeous play action passes. The Ravens then responded with a scoring drive of their own late in the 2nd quarter.

The Steelers defense is going to need to do a bit more than they have if Pittsburgh is going to steal a victory away from Baltimore in the 2nd half. The Ravens start the second half with the ball.

Go Steelers!

I think you and Blitz are going to have a revolt tomorrow...

based upon what we’re seeing tonight so far. I’m afraid that the nay-sayers are going to have an absolute plethora of cannon-fodder if it keeps up like this…..

Now I know it

That loss is all on the coaching. As much as I respect and admire Coach T, I feel that he let this game get away from us.

by MDGeekyGrl on Nov 29, 2009 9:49 PM EST reply actions

i'm so bummed out

after the way they ended the half, they basically are giving up, not even trying to pass. Our defense is not the same. Dixon has been great, you aren’t doing the team any favors by being so conservative. We need this game. We can’t afford to lose because we’re too scared to let Dixon throw the ball. If we do Arians need to be fired on the spot. This is horrible. There is no excuse for this, let the kid play he needs to learn how to deal with mistakes anyway.

playing not to lose doesn’t work…. and so far DD hasn’t done anything to deserve not having confidence in him

only one theory

they may feel that he doesn’t have enough experience running our hurry-up/no-huddle offense. But still, why not try a pass or two…?

by acrollet on Nov 29, 2009 9:51 PM EST up reply actions

Excuse me

But that is all he ran in college. He is a spread option guy, Chris mentioned it twice, he is his best when he is in the shotgun and he has space to run and throw. Those are his assets you actually are playing a game that makes him more comfortable. This just dumb scheme and playcalling. I’m sorry, when you have people who has no experience with coaching knows more about your players strength. This should be the nail in the coffin for Bruce, he has to be gone if he keeps this up.

Mendy needs to be an every down back

I think he is a better blocker than MM and equally able to catch the ball out of the backfield.

if the ravens win b/c the offense behind DD isn't up to besting the ravens defense, fine

but if we lose the game because the coaches don’t give DD an opportunity to try, we might as well have forfeited the game and saved a trip to baltimore

by BlackandGoldWolverine on Nov 29, 2009 9:53 PM EST reply actions

The offense kept the ball for awhile in the 2nd quarter and gave the D a rest.

No reason for them to come out flat with 4 minutes left and give up big chunks of yardage.

by Billy52 on Nov 29, 2009 9:54 PM EST reply actions

I'm a die hard fan but the problem is...

coaching. Why are Parker and MeMo in the game? Mendy is obviously a better blocker and receiver. The 2009 Steelers are the definition of insanity: we do the same thing week in and week out and expect a different result. It’s pathetic.

by mactastic07 on Nov 29, 2009 9:54 PM EST reply actions

we need to keep running the ball, and our defensive backs need to step up

Two weeks in a row...

MeMo has gotten beat on blitz pickup. And even though the players play the game and he was responsible for the holding, the coaches made the decision to have him in the game. It’s terrible.

I noticed that too. Mendy picks up the blitz better. Only thing is that on 3rd down, MM automatically comes in for Mendy. We may need to re-think that

Dixon looks like a player

With all the complaints, it was a good first half of play calling by ba. Yes he went consevatives at the end, but it’s a legitamate (if frustrating) way to end the half with a rookie qb playing in the shadow of his own goal post. Actually nice to see a half with no sacks.

Steelers coaching is playing to lose

They MUST see that they need to go to the air to TRY to win. Run run run run is not working.

I know BB is out I know I know.

But at least try to win! Assuming that they can win 4 more games is a big assumption. I think that they think they can lose this, then take 4 out of the last 5.

BIG TASK!

gorgeous. best kick of the year for him.

guys, huge previous 7 minutes. ravens were on the march on their opening drive, we get that fumble, turn field position, get a nice return from logan and then get points. we’re right in this! need great kickoff coverage right here!

MH vs FWP

It’s no contest is it?

MH gets the ball and goes 10 yards.

FWP gets the ball and goes down on contact all the time.

With the type of weapons that are at the Steelers disposal the idea of an offensive coordinator not having any kind of plan for the type of player that Dixon is has to be unacceptable.Arians is simply not getting the job done. Perhaps its’ time to promote Charlie Batch to a coaching position.

and don’t forget if denver starts to slip up in the final few weeks we have the tie breaker over them.

by tdp992 on Nov 29, 2009 11:57 PM EST reply actions

Here it is

As I stated after last weeks debacle, Arians has no clue! At the half he wasted a possession. It may have been a good thing to put a little pressure on DD at that moment and see what he may have for the 2 minute drill. No. He would rather have him throw outs when the game is on the line? I agree with all of you regarding the roll out/run. Worked well once. I think Arians was scared it may work again and he would miss out on more chances to throw the ball. The other comment I made was about the secondary. They cannot cover, intercept or tackle. Troy has 3 interceptions and leads the team. He only played 4 or 5 games? Arians has to go, we need help in the secondary, (even with TP back), and I do not even want to get started with special, (or not so special), teams.

by Jeffrey19608 on Nov 29, 2009 11:58 PM EST reply actions

SERIOUSLY

Now i know this loss hurts twice as much for me (Dixon fan and all) but why only 2 roll out plays the whole game? Oh year, and both ended in a touchdown. Even stupid Colinsworth was saying it like 4-5 times, look for the Dixon roll out, but it never came.

To all folks trying to take this as a positive, saying we couldnt expect much, and we got more than we could have hoped for, you are wrong. We had the lead late, and yet again , the D , failed to make several plays which would have won the game, and Arians failed to notice the biggest mismatch on the field, Dixon on the ground against a tired D. Reminded me of Cowher in the 97 AFC title game , putting Kordell in position to fail, playing to his weekness. Bad and trending that way.

by Micculus on Nov 29, 2009 11:58 PM EST reply actions

Agreed

This year’s D just has not shown the ability to close anybody out. The only game they did so was against the lowly Lions. The D needed to step up and stop the Ravens when we went ahead 17-14 and they laid another egg.

I can't stand Arians, but . . .

When you can’t keep your opponent from converting in 2 tries with 22 yards to go for a first down, you don’t deserve to win. If the D holds on Baltimore’s last series in regulation, the Steeler win by 3.
