The Bill Cowher question resurfaces.
The Cleveland Browns recently fired their GM, who apparently was hand-picked by coach Eric Mangini. That's an absurd scenario, but let's move on.
I was listening to Tunch Ilkin with Craig Wolfley on 970 AM this morning, A caller came on the air saying he's a long time friend of Bill Cowher and still talks to him and Cowher said he's interested in returning to coaching within the next couple of years, but only under a couple of condition. One, he wants to go into a team that requires rebuilding, and two, he wants to have total control, both as coach and as GM, I imagine.
It didn't sound like the caller was BS'ing (though he could have), and both Tunch and Wolfley seemed very intrigued by the call.
Do you guys think the Browns will be calling up Cowher soon? It's a couple of years now that we've been talking about this, but hey, seems more possible now than ever. If not the Browns, what other team?

He can have
second place in the division with the Browns, that’s ok with me

No way.
I respect The Chin, and I don’t want him in our division if he’s not working with the Steelers. I say he should go to the Lions. Safe, out of our way (unless we meet in the SB, as unlikely as that is. I mean, it IS the Lions…).

I think it goes to Fisher.
You heard it here on BTSC first, from my RE. But I guess it’s a plausible scenario.

Panthers
He is just waiting for the Panthers to get tired of underachieving and fire Fox, i really think Carolina is where he truly wants to be.

+1
I think Bill has been campaigning for the Panthers job since he left… Fox can’t survive this year, so I think he gets what he wants…

Pull the knife out of my back
You think Favre wearing purple makes him a traitor? Cowher wearing Poo colored attire and trying to stop the Steelers takes that to a whole new level. No thank you sir. No thank you.

don't forget
Cowher did play for the browns and also coached with them for 3 years, so he does have a Cleveland connection, although as I said above, I think Carolina is where he really wants to be.

Yes and so was Dick
But he was the face of the Steelers for so long. He needs to go to Carolina. Stay out of our Division Cowher. We love you too much. :)

I couldn't care less where Cowher went
I really doubt he wants to go back north. Carolina or Washington maybe. Though he would have to get past Dan Snyder in Washington and he “ian’t no” Dan Rooney. I think Carolina is the most logical unless some wild card comes in with a really sweet package deal.

And I also really appreciate you not saying “I could care less.”

If Tomlin goes inside our division
I will lose some respect for him.

That's not Tomlin's swagger though
I couldn’t see him doing that.

I could see Tomlin going to the Raiders
but only after Emperor Al-patine dies/goes away.

Carolina
I think he’ll be the Panthers HC next year. Fox isn’t getting the job done there, and Cowher lives in Raleigh.

I like Cowher, but giving him total control would just another stupid decision by Randy Lerner. Very few situations where the coach has final say on personnel have worked and those that have, e.g., Jimmy Johnson and to a lesser degree Mike Holmgren, have worked because those individuals performed so exceptionally on the personnel end. I just don’t see that Cowher’s strength was in player evaluation. Give him a roster that should be .500 on paper and he’d squeeze ten or eleven wins out of that group and he’d have the fanbase going crazy. But that won’t happen in Cleveland next year or, if Cowher is GM also, any other year.
Would I be offended if he was the Browns coach? Nope. (although primarily because, despite Cowher being one hell of a head coach, I think Tomlin can coach circles around him).

Cowher needs a winning GM to succeed.
This might just be a rumor. Regardless, I think Cowher should steer clear of Cleveland. Dan Rooney is the guy who enabled Cowher to succeed through his patient and steady leadership in the front office. If Cowher’s actually thinking of returning to the sidelines, he would be wise to pick a team with top-notch management. Otherwise, he might find that another Super Bowl is elusive.

A bit off topic
But Pola-Gona-Maul-U (or anyone else), are you a regular listener of Tunch and Wolf?
I like them when they get in to more of the technical details of the game, but I have to change stations when Wolf starts yammering endlessly about food or words he just made up or other silliness. It’s too much of a John Madden-like caricature for me.

listen online
Wolf cracks himself up. Half the time he’s off mike laughing hysterically while Tunch carries them too a break.
They do, however, get alot of the players to call in and open up to them since they are ex(retired) steelers.
Max called in the week before the Vikings game and they got him talking about J Allen . He did’nt give them the cookie-cutter, toe the company line answer he would give to the national media.
He said JA was GOOD but the best guy he has ever played against was the guy he plays against every day," the bowling ball " James Harrison.
He also compared the 2. playing JA is like puttin on my hawaiian shirt, gettin me an umbrella drink and my lounge chair compared to playing Harrison. Priceless.
You don’t get that kind of info ANYWHERE else.

Mangini will probably stay put
He is in the first year of a four-year, $12 million contract that the Browns would have to eat if they fired him. The Browns still owe $20 million to their former GM and head coach (Romeo, wherefore art thou?), so I doubt they want to eat another big contract. The rumor is that Kolkinis, the Browns GM, was fired “for cause” so they won’t have to pay him.
by Steelin on Nov 4, 2009 7:44 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Cowher
told the Browns he isn’t interested in their head coaching job out of “respect” for the Rooney family this past offseason. Because of that I couldn’t see him going to the Browns but I also don’t believe they will give up on Mangini just yet either. Cowher probably goes to Carolina since that is his new adopted hometown and they probably would fork the dough over to him to make him the highest paid coach in the NFL.

love him,,, but,
lived in south florida for 34 yrs, and was asked constantly about cowher, ,,,,,i’d say he’s a good coach, not a great coach , but he’s our coach,,,, he’s the caricature of the guys we grew up with or watched grow up or grew up next store to…… and the nfl is sooo homogenous and generally characterless,,, i’ll take cowher………honestly,,,,he got a lot of “in home help” to reach very good ,,,,not great,,,,, the rah rah attitude was fun , but did the players really take it as seriously as we and the media liked to believe??
there’s rumors he wasn’t a marathon time served daily person as a coach,,,,,so i don’t know how he’d do enough time to be both coach and gm….and he’s better on the tube than i ever expected,,,,,so maybe he ought to stay there,,,,unless he can cheat some owner out of insane megabucks…….cause i don’t think he’ll be successful again.

The Chin
is better than Dungy at the very least. With analysis and coaching, IMO.
