Driveby Report Big Benless edition
I decided to go ahead and do a Driveby on a losing week just because I just to open up some dialogue.
1. Dennis Dixon: He delivered a performance above what I thought he would. I thought he would be so confused he would do nothing.
2. Arians: I have problems with him every game, but I don't hate the man. He is what he is. He's a man with a system that he doesn't dismantle for the sake of change. One of his strengths is being a little unorthodox in his approach to some things. I call it gambling. His type of gambling sometimes ends in outthinking himself and forcing himself to be predictable. That causes him to sometimes do something stupid to be less predictable (I know ???). The thing most hated about him from most of his haters is he doesn't run the ball. Maybe this will bring him around. My advice...If you can run the ball, run it...you have a nice passing game Bruce, but let it be part of your attack...not the body of it.
3. Sefan Logan: He is capable of hitting the big one.....but I saw two returns where he ran into coverage when he had open space. I will try to find it and break it down...or maybe one of you that do that stuff do it. It was a punt in the middle of the game. He was near the sideline, had a block to his right and after that block (no lie) he had nothing but green in the middle of the field.
4. Kick coverage: I saw Corey Ivy in coverage. Good pick up.
5. Lawrence Timmons: I hear ya...those who said he would do well in Farrior’s spot and put Fox in Timmons' spot. One thing though; Farrior is still a solid player. Sure he has looked bad at key times, but the man is a baller. I would like to see them tinker with some situational personnel adjustments. (This would be a good discussion point)
6. Ryan Clark: I've seen him miss a few INTs lately because he was loading up for the hit. That can be good at times. He even gave a receiver alligator arms because he saw him coming. I would like to see him break down more in open field instances and just make the tackle, but you have to like how he can jar the ball out and make receivers adjust. Ryan we like the big hits, but we hate YAC. There is a happy medium.....I know it's easier when Troy is there but he's not right now.
7. Ramon Foster: Dennis Dixon wasn't the only green player out there. Ramon made his first start. I think he did well. I'm kinda impartial (ok more than kinda) but I think he did well. He missed a couple assignments. He got called out once by the announcing crew about it on a pulling play, but he play alright.
8. Rush-hard Spin-den-haul: Was he timid after the Ray Lewis hit last year? Ask Ray how many times he got stoned by Rashard trying to blitz. He also didn't seem to mind taking it between the tackles right into his grill. I hope his development continues without hitches because he is coming along well. He still holds the ball low and keeps it in his right arm. Sorry both are pet peeves of mine.
9. Best looking cheerleaders in Maryland belong to the Redskins. Sorry Ravens
10. Heath Miller: He was open.
11. Hines Ward: Even grown men say things that they shouldn't at times when they shouldn't. Good thing is grown men can also overcome these things. It's only as big as they make it, not as big as the media makes it.
12. I feel like blah writing this.

I still think Stefon Logan can break on but eventually you have to see him do it once to prove he can
at this point I say have Wallace handle KO see what he can do on them

Yeah, I wouldn’t mind seeing Wallace back there. If he’s solid, then I’ll join the ‘cut Logan’ bandwagon. Still do not want Burnett back there.

Even if we take away his KO duties I still think we should keep Logan
There are still other things he can do line him up as the fourth reveriver in the Hypocloid and let him run and see what he can do there and occasionally run him deep or an uderneath route see what could happen

“Logan can break one at any time”. His biggest PR was like 25 yards so far and I can only remember 2 maybe 3 big KO returns he had. I’ve never had that feeling in a return where I thought he was going to break one.

I think after they watch this week's tape. Which they have most likely:
Some question marks that were not there may start to come out.
"A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty." - Winston Churchill
As for Farrior in coverage, we used to have OLB that covered people. We haven’t been doing that. Porter was sick in coverage and blitzing, are Harrison and Woodley not as good, or just too slow?
As for running the ball, we got a lot of 3-7 yard gains on first down, that has not been the case most games. Not many people run the ball on 2nd and 9, or 2nd and 8. If we can keep getting good first down gains there will be more running plays. I am seriously convinced Arians tries to be balanced, but when your only favorable rushing down and distance is first and ten, the reps aren’t going to be there.
I can guarantee
Woodley could not cover a tortoise. He is so slow. Plus, as a converted DE, I doubt he has spent much of his career in coverage.
Harrison has been dropping into coverage a LOT, in fact, I’d rather see him blitzing more often. He is undoubtedly our best pass rusher.
I think he could cover a tortoise
I’ll take you up on that one

Meant the Ravens cheerleaders uniforms.
I live in the Redskins TV sector. The skins have sucked for the last few years, have no reason to watch them. If Snyder sold the skins, it would probably make them better (addition by subtraction you understand). If Hef bought the skins…they should at the very least be more entertaining.
Speaking of entertaining, I miss Jerry Glanville. Perhaps he could help with special teams next year. Or show up at training camp with MC Hammer.

There is something different about the 2009 Steelers
Just little things at first. I remember feeling a bit uneasy about Santonio’s reaction to Ben’s “I did not feel right” statement after the Cincy loss. Watching Total Access on Fri I was shocked to hear a report about Ben not being sure about his status. This seemed like too much access for a Steeler team. Then came Sunday night. Though I thought it was a bit overblown, I was shocked to hear Hines make those comments. Are the Steelers losing their mystique? One of the reasons that attracted me to this team was their unity, another was their air of being a bit mysterious. I hope they can resolve any issues that they have behind closed doors and go back to being the classy business-like team that I love and respect. We have faced challenges before, we are not the Cowboys, we do not eat our young.
We're just having a bad stretch
It happens. We’ve just got to do our best to overcome it and win out. There should be no doubt that this is a good team, but even good teams can beat themselves more than the other team beats them.
I for one have faith in Tomlin to correct these issues. And if by some chance we don’t make it to the playoffs this year, I would expect Tomlin to attack our issues in the offseason with a vengence.

I had a safety like Hines (imagine that a safety with Hines' mentality)
He would call people out on stuff that the coaching staff would say “That kid is insane.” He did it because he played with concussions, and broken fingers and stuff. I read it like it was his ego speaking. We would tell the kid It’s not about being tough it’s about being smart. There’s more dead tough people than smart people. Nobody took him seriously when he got on those rants.

Heath Miller
Glad I wasn’t the only one who saw how wide open he was. I was upset all game that he didn’t get any looks and I know he had to help block some, but he probably had 10-15 yards of open field in front of him on that 3rd down play. Another thing that bothered me is why they never tried to get Dixon moving and get him out of the pocket. They only tried it one time and we all know what happened on that play. I just felt they should have at least let him move around a little bit and maybe create something with his legs. Can’t change it now so on to next week and hopefully the return of some of our injured players.

As for logan- he did miss good holes
I’m now questioning his field vision. Not sure he’s worth the spot anymore. H seems to be running carey davis style right into a wall of players. Most returns for a TD involve running sideways initially and I didn’t see him trying that.
Something I was thinking
The special teams just need to find a way to adjust to the “elimination” of the true wedge. Something I noticed that I never noticed before (didn’t realy pay any attention to), Logan actually had some pretty nice lanes to run through but guys were not holding their blocks. If there is open space to the left but a holes straight ahead, the fastest way to a location is a straight line A to B. Can’t totally fault him.

POV....
1) Dennis was terrific, and I would feel comfortable that he can handle the car keys if needed. It makes you wonder if Charlie gets pushed into starting that coaching job and moved off the active roster…..
2) Not a fan of BA, as you and I traded in the other post. Your comments here actually surprise me. I don’t hate the man either, but I seemed to be more critical than you on the other note. Here you seem to be more in agreement with me.
3) I agreed with DYMS earlier in the season and liked Logan a whole lot. I still do, but I’m getting a little impatient. I need to step back and take a deep breath.
4) I noticed Ivey as well, all around the plays…..
5) I love Farrior, warts and all. Timmons is starting to come into himself, and Fox has been outstanding when called upon. Maybe a rotation is needed? Maybe passing plays need Fox to come in? How much is the result of Troy being out? Good topic for another post for sure.
6) I’d like to see Ryan see the ball. A great example was last night when Gay was beat and if Ryan had been playing the ball instead of the hit, there would not be a long completion. Good call.
7) Foster looked pretty good to me. I heard the comments about foot speed, but was impressed more that you didn’t notice him in the game – the way linemen are supposed to not be noticed.
8) Mendy was terrific last night. In fact, and this is not on him so much, but I thought he should have gotten at least one or two more check-down passes. Very solid running and blocking.
9) I’ll defer to your call here…..nothing stood out last night.
10) +1. I was waiting for him to get the ball, figured he would have had a monster game.
11) Was a little disappointed really, this team has always been more about each other (a la Clark in Denver) and the sum total better than the individual parts. I’m not sure I really needed to hear anyone, let alone Hines, question a team mate. Or, maybe the team needed a little shake up and motivation. I just don’t know what to think.
Good job Arn, now that the raw emotions have faded a little, we can go back to thinking logically – and you have more than a few solid points to get that rolling.
Agree with you on Mendy
Honestly there’s no reason Parker should be getting every third series, especially in a tight situation and that MeMo should automatically get every third down. Mendy is the total package – running, catching (and missing guys miss afterward), and picking up the blitz. It’s a real joy watching him lay into a backer who just KNOW they’re gonna overrun the little RB.
I’m not against using Parker and MeM, but only as relief. And I wouldn’t mind seeing more of MeMo and Mendy both out there on third downs. Both are a threat to run, catch, or stay in to block. It would be a look that would give defenses fits.

Heath Miller: He was open.
Yep. I said in Blitz’s recap that Dixon really failed to go through his progressions on almost every passing play. Probably because he did not get enough practice time. There was one play (wish I remembered which one), it was somewhere in the 4th I think and the Steelers were on or around Baltimore’s 40-45. Dixon tunnel-visioned the left side of the field and threw that way. Heath was more wide open than I have seen a receiver all year 20 yards down the middle. If Dixon had found him it was a TD.
Your boy, Ramon, eh?
On the Spin Doctor, I believe he is still running a bit too upright, but it seems to be improving each week. I think he is beginning to realize putting his shoulder down can get him extra yards.

I'm thinking
a certain busted shoulder has Mendy more inclined to spin away from initial contact, at least for the time being. As he steadily regains confidence in the strength of that shoulder, I believe we will see the spin moves decline.

by chewiesteeler on Dec 2, 2009 12:52 PM EST up reply actions
But he broke that shoulder on a spin move
I think if he lowers his shoulder and bulls ahead, he would most likely get 2 more yards per carry after the LoS. I say after the LoS because you can’t get up enough steam to bull your way over a blitzing LB. Plus, ankle tackles are kind of hard to power through.

Nice recap Arn...
Like I said, I always liked the driveby.
I’m slowly sneaking into the dump Logan bandwagon. I like him, he’s roughly my size, so I guess I’m being a heightist, it’s nice to see a little guy out there, but, at some point I want him to break one. I love the consistnecy in his returns, kick off wise, he seems to get out to the 30-35 fairly regularly, but I think we have a few guys who can get us that kind of yardage on returns most of the time. Wallace, Burnett, whoever. At the least, I think it’s time to throw one in there every now and again, just to get a look see.

It can’t be because he’s a rookie; he’s just catching punts and kickoffs, not covering pro wideouts.

re:Potsie & ILBs-
I’ve been feeling all season that Potsie is missing Larry Foote’s consistency and knowledge of the defensive schemes; Timmons has been out of position a fair amount and hasn’t been there to back up Potsie on plays where Potsie misses a tackle or gets blocked. Foote was VERY good at being the second man to the tackle- I thought it was going to affect us a lot more to lose him than we realized. Given that Detriot’s defense has actually stopped some people i’d say Larry *
was* better than the FO and coaches realized.
Combine the departure of Foote with Nate Washington’s, B-Mac’s, Aaron’s injury, Troy’s injury, Stapleton’s injury and we’ve lost six starters and regular players from last year. That’s some pretty major difference in anybody’s book. With that much turnover/change we might be lucky to be where we are right now.
Luckily, we are as good as we are unlucky; with a few plays turning our way we could easily be 9-2 or 10-1. And- it’s not hard to imagine this group running off 5 straight W’s.
IF this Steelers team gets to the post-season it could very well make a strong run.
It’s situations like this one that defines a strong group and team ethic. In all, an exciting time to be a Steelers fan. If, Football Gods’ forbid, we didn’t make the post-season we’re STILL very lucky to have seen the sucess we have, so i’m nott too worried either way.
It’s just so much more interesting to know we could pull through this…
Foote
I totally don’t buy the notion that Farrior’s drop in play in passing situations is due to the absence of Foote, a historically slow and flat footed ILB for a 3-4 scheme. Of course, without knowing exactly what play was called and what assignments each LB had I can’t say this for sure. However, it seems more likely to me that Farrior’s age has caught up with him and that even though he’s a heady player, his football intelligence can no longer compensate for his diminishing physical skills.
Also, seeing as Detroit let Brady Quinn put up 4 touchdowns on them, I’m not sure I’d say they’ve exactly improved on D from last year.
The Loss of BMac continues to hurt though. He’s not an elite corner or anything, but he was very solid, could play the ball better than any of our other CB’s, and gave us good depth. With Gay obviously out of his league at starter (although he’s a fine Nickleback), Townsend showing his age worse than Farrior, and only rookies behind them it’s obvious that we should have done more to keep Bmac. If it cost us resigning Hartwig so be it.
by BluegrassSteeler on Dec 2, 2009 2:30 AM EST up reply actions
And I don’t mean to come off like I’m bashing either Foote or Farrior. Both have been great players and key pieces in a series of powerhouse defenses. And, as you point out, there skill sets complimented each other nicely – Farrior was the speedy coverage guy that could blitz and Foote was the solid run stuffer that was capable of laying a big hit to an RB all day if necessary.
In retrospect it may have been wiser to resign Foote to a long term extension and let Farrior walk this year. After all, Timmons is something of a young Farrior (although capable of being better I think) and Foote would have been more than capable of assuming command of the D. And in passing situations I’m not sure Foote would be much worse than Farrior now.

Maybe this is the lingering effects...
… of “Camp Cupcake.”
No stamina….
Or maybe it is the effects of no running attack to keep the defense rested…
We ran Sunday

I still don’t understand.

I feel ya (metaphorically)
These types of things simply should not happen to this team. Inexplicable how they have gone from piss poor in 1 MTE to stellar in 2 MTE then back to shitey in 3 MTE. Another coach seemingly on the hot seat if they miss the tourney is Ligashesky.
Never was quite sure how the Steelers ended up with him other than the fact that they needed a ST coach when Mikey the T signed on and he was the only one available. He got shitecanned from his prior team when they finished dead LAST in ST categories.
As for offensive execution, well, that has been debated ad nauseam. I am certain that I have it all figured out though .. .. .. it’s my fault for not calling in the plays sooner. Sometimes I have to run to the fridge and grab a beer or hit the head and that causes many delays. By the time I get the call in, the guys don’t know whether to shit or go blind.

LOL
Be easy on yourself and let nature take it’s course. You have to guzzle then you’ll have less frequent longer leak breaks. Get a cooler, they keep it colder and they can be accessed easily. That can be your “no huddle” offense. Also don’t invite Negative Nancy over. This should get us back on track and help us win #7.
I am willing to bet we have a new ST coach after this year if not earlier. I’ve seen some things in the return game that are not the returners fault. I’ve seen some things in the coverage team that are just plain “stupid”. I will say this….they look confused and they lack some (for lack of a better word) elementary technique. My son picks out stuff at full speed. I go back and look at he’s right on.

Hmmm
a cooler and an LCD in the bathroom. THAT WOULD SOLVE EVERYTHING!!!
You know, I theorized earlier this year somewhere on this blog that, until the Steelers have a losing season or miss the playoffs, that no coach would be replaced regardless of any glaring deficiencies. Honestly, I think that is commendable on Tomlin’s part. I think it is handed down from the Rooney’s. How many times did the FO prove its loyalty to Cowher by extending his contract immediately following a LOSING season? To be honest, in Mikey I Trust. I’m not big on throwing coaches out with the bathwater. Continuity is crucial in the NFL. It can be so hard though to watch the same things kill the team week in and week out.

I agree
however…I think ST might be the exception. I think Arians is safe though. Just my opinion.

its the nfl
the rule is you split with your division, unless one teams really great or one teams really pathetic.,,,,,living florida, i was asked about the cleveland /steelers rivalry(when there was one) my answer was …..you’d have… hard hits-cheap shots bad calls funny bounces- and the home team wins. but thats true of any division rivalry. thats why we were overdue to loose to the ravens even if they’re not as good as the past 2 yrs.,,and you don’t sleep walk into kc. and think they’ll surrender.
