Familiar feel? & a look ahead

I thought I’d break my post silence even though I really have nothing to say. Don’t ask me why I wrote this because I really don’t know. Maybe it’s because I like to stir the pot. Maybe it’s because I remember crazy stuff like this. Anyhow, this is going to give hope to the Bronco fans and make some Steelers fans nervous. For the record, it doesn’t make me nervous. I am just a historical library of useless information. There is some valuable information but you have to have a shovel to get to it. I digress…on with the history lesson with a little look ahead added on.

The year was 2007. The year ironically many have compared this year to. Ben was having a good year. Troy was hurt early in the year. The Steelers however had fought their way to a 4-1 record at the bye. They lost a lead late against the Cardinals earlier but had steadied the ship. The bye came at a good time. Big Snack was still hobbled and Troy was playing hurt. Next up, a trip to Denver on Sunday night. Denver had just got handled by the Chargers the week before.

Hmm This sounds familiar. The only difference was they had a week off too. Surely the Steelers would come out fresh and take it to the Broncos after having an extra week to rest and prepare for the Broncos even though they were on a bye too, right? The Steelers came out and put up 7 quickly. Ben was having a good year remember? He made the Pro Bowl. Then all of a sudden the wheels came of the cart. Suddenly the Steelers looked rusty. Pardon the pun. Denver took advantage of sloppy play by the Steelers’ offense.

Denver had a 60 yard fumble return for a TD and heck there was even an Elvis (Dumervil) spotting. Ben was picked twice and sacked 4 times. For the offense playing so bad Willie Parker almost had 100 yards (93) and Ward and Holmes had 7 and six catches respectively. The bright spot was the Steelers’ tightends accounted for 3 of the Steelers’ four TDs. Heath had 2 and Spaeth had 1 on his only catch of the day.

Even though this was a sloppy game the offense rallied to tie the game late in the 4th. Only to have Elam boot a 49 yarder in the last seconds to finish the Steelers off. What was really irritating about this game was the feeling that the Steelers seemed to ebb and flow. They would seemingly take control and then give up a big play and have to dig out of a hole. Sound familiar? It was like a microcosm of the frustration of the 2007 season. They would seem in control lose control only to rally back just in time to lose the game late.

Now I sort of change gears and the subject. If there could ever be a stretch of the season where you want to gauge where you are and what needs to be changed, it’s the 3 week span from 25 Oct to Nov 15th. They passed part one by winning a game at home against a true contender. Part two is the challenge of coming off a bye week and beating a ticked off contender at home trying to rebound from a loss. The last will be Cincy week. That will be beating the competition in their division against a team that they should beat at home.

Each leg of this test reveals different things. The Minnesota test (part 1) was stopping a prolific running game and a crafty veteran QB. The bye week and Denver game (part 2) will show the Steelers’ response ability to win a big away game after a big home win. They would have to do it against a team they don’t have a lot of success against (6-13-1 all-time regular season and 2-7-1 in Denver regular season). The Bengals part (part 3) will have division championship repercussions.

The totality of the test will reveal itself in how the Steelers sit after this week. It could be anywhere from a three way tie to the winner having the upper hand over both contenders. With both Cincy losses in the AFC these next two weeks not only have huge division impact but conference impact as well. If both Cincy and Pittsburgh win this week, it will be similar to a playoff game matchup. If the Steelers win and the Bengals lose this week, it will be the usual Bengals trying to get to the top with a sense of desperation. If the Steelers lose and Bengals win this week, it will be the Steelers playing with a sense of desperation. Regardless of the scenario, it will be crazy in that stadium/field.

Maybe I’ll start my "driveby reports" back up. Maybe I’ll do my "humpday flash backs" again. Maybe I’ll just go back to riding waves. Actually I’m surprised I actually had time to write this. Have a great day.

Great Post Arn!!!

I too was feeling the same way, of course this is one of the biggest games of the season for me. Living in Colorado and having to listen to all these Bronco fans act like theyve won the Super Bowl after going 6-0. Ive been to every Steelers-Broncos game in Denver and the last 2 regular season games ended the same way, with Jason Elam kicking game winning fieldgoals. I will be at the game Monday Night and I hope the similarities to 2007 end here!!!!!

Been to the Springs

Nice area. I remember having a sort of fluttering in my chest/shortness of breath. It was kinda subtle but I was thinking wow is this because of the thin air or is soemthing wrong with me. Random I know. Anyhow…that area is really nice.

I wanted to go but my business didn’t allow for much time. Maybe next time.

I say you will see a good game and we will win

I had some mixed results in Steeler Bengals games I have been to. They lost most of them.

Here are some games I’ve been to in Cincy:

1979 Franco fumbles like 200 times and the Steelers lose 35-10 yet win the Super Bowl that year.

1995 Kordell caught that bomb that sparked the comeback. Steelers 49-31 in a rout.

1996 A stinking Kickoff return right before halftime hurt us after I kissed a chick in a Bengals jersey. She bet me a kiss that the Steelers would not score before the half. Kiss was nice but it was the kiss of death. Bengals 34-24

1998 Carl Pickens burns D. Washington in the final seconds. 25-20 Bengals

2008 Ward punishes Rivers and Mewelde Moors punishes the rest of the defense. Steelers in a rout 38-10.

See you are due for a win!

good stuff

hopefully these are two different teams and the Steelers will not repeat that performance. 2007 was a frustrating year all the way up until Garrard went streaking through our defense via the most obvious holding call in the history of the sport (jk) Harrison is held more obviously every week.

There might be some similarities with Pittsburgh...

But Denver appears to be a completely different team. I just know that there should be some sensational individual battles to watch:

James Harrison v. Ryan Clady – reigning defensive player of the year against perhaps the best young left tackle in the league
Brandon Marshall v. Ike Taylor – big, strong #1 receiver who can run after the catch against the big, strong CB that regularly plays his best against top notch competition
Champ Bailey v. Hines Ward – a duel of the craftiest of veterans
Max Starks v. Elvis Dumervil – Starks is coming off a dominating performance over Jared Allen while Dumervil is threatening Michael Strahan’s single season sack record

Should be a fantastic game.

by pghnorthside on Nov 4, 2009 1:26 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Yep good matchups

Remember Starks is the best young…semi-young tackle in the league

They can throw at Ike because the worst thing that can happen is an incomplete

Champ better play someone other than Ward or they are going to get burned

Odom was threatening that same record when he met up with Starks

So he’s slightly slower than Darius Heyward Bey. Not comparing his skill set to Heyward-Bey though.

by PixburghArn on Nov 5, 2009 1:25 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Champ Bailey and Josh Barrett

Champ runs in the 4.2’s. Josh Barrett is a safety and ran 4.36. Andre Goodman and Jack Williams are fast too but probably not as fast as Wallace. But 40 times can sometimes be misleading. Productive football speed is much different than running in a straight line ala Jerome Bettis, Curtis Martin, Hines Ward, Rod Smith.

Big Josh Barrett fan...

I figured that be the name you’d throw out there. He is fast, and big, but how good is he in coverage?

And trust me when I say, Wallace’s 40 projects well to his football speed, kid can straight up fly.

Josh Matches up best

With TE’s in 1 on 1 coverage. Past 2 years he has been given 1 on 1 assignment on Tony Gonzales and Antonion Gates and just did a bang up job on both of them. Not sure he’s ready to take on a speedy reciever though.

How does Wallace fair when CB try to bump him in your opinion?

Wallace is not just running fast

he is gamespeed fast. I’m willing to bet you Bailey doesn’t run a sub 4.3 40 anymore. Josh Barrett may be a good choice but if you use eaither one of these guys on Wallace I’m happy. You would be using a playmmker on our 3rd reciever. Hines or Tone will light you up. If you stay in nickel then Mendenhall will eat. Pick your poison.

James Harrison vs. Ryan Clady...

Is THE matchup of the day in my book. Has Clady allowed any sacks in his career yet? The man’s a beast. Anytime a premier pass rusher faces a premier tackle, that’s what I’m watching.

Deebo makes everybody look bad, he’ll get at least one, prob cause a fumble.

by SteelerStuckintheSouth on Nov 5, 2009 3:46 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

In the sense that Deebo

is the reigning DPOY, yes, I agree, this will be Clady’s toughest test. However, he has faced some pretty serious pash rushes/rushers in his year-and-a-half young career: Bengals and Cowboys come to mind this year. Actually, I just looked over their 2008 schedule, nothing too ominous there really. Hmm DEEBO GONNA KICK SOME ASS?

Don’t know where to look to see if that sack stat on Clady is accurate. I have a hard time wrapping my brain around that one but I suppose it is possible.

Dumervil vs Starks will be fun to watch

Dumervil is a little like James Harrison. He’s small, very quick, and doesn’t stop til the whistle. He might give Starks fits because of his abiltiy to get under Starks’ pads.

I usually post this way. I can go x’s and o’s with anyone, but I don’t like to go that route. I am a coach and I can’t explain things like I would like to on here because I don’t want to leave details out and I don’t have time to do it properly . So I usually keep it pedestrian. I found most people like it like that. If you get too detailed some won’t follow and the others will act like they know what you’re talking about but you can tell they don’t. LOL Still others do know what you are talking about but without dedicating the proper time to it I get frustrated. Know what I mean?

+1...

If for nothing else for using the term “bandied about”.

Nicely done Arn...

Interesting parallels between the two games, and I’m with you all the way on the make or break stretch of the year. These aren’t must win’s yet, but the trajectory of the season will come down to how we play in these next few games.

Bring back humpday flashbacks, I forgot about those. I liked them.

Good stuff, 'Arn

The biggest difference to me is that the Broncos were not supposed to be that good in 2007, but they’re 6-1 this year. We’ll see what happens, I guess.

Agreed, but it's still the Broncos

and….oh wait I don’t buy into that hocus pocus.

There you go

Like the Churchill quote, although I think I’m a pessimist by nature. Still, I’m glad Churchill was there when he was, or we’d all be speaking German right now. (I know, off the topic :)).

nice point about cincy's losses being in-conference

hadn’t thought about that, but it does make them a little precarious… guess I have to root for them (against ratbirds) on Sunday

by acrollet on Nov 4, 2009 8:31 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

what?! i’d still root for the ratbirds sunday. We can only tie with the bengals in terms of head to head, we want them to lose as much as possible. We can take care of the trash ourselves and dump it twice still (ratbirds) so they need to take care of our dirty work.

Drove 600 miles

To see that game. The players were grouchy afterwards, very few came out for the meet and greet. I was pissed all 600 miles home. Believe it or not my wife wants to go this week too. I’m content to sit at home and watch this one. The Steelers have lost every time I’ve seen them play in person.

I wasn’t pleased because we didn’t win - Mike Tomlin (after the 2009 week 2 loss to Chicago).

Totally useless fact about the Steelers-Broncos history

According to steelertribute.com, since the ‘84 season playoff victory in Denver, the Steelers have won exactly every third game against the Broncos. Since Denver won the last two meetings, it should be PIT’s turn to win! And if that happens, we need to hope they don’t meet in the playoffs!
(Or it’s just a meaningless pattern that holds no power over the future, but that’s just rational talk.)
