Biggest Concerns - Denver Broncos
Just wanted to post something real quick.
Eddie Royal concerns me though. He will probably be matched up against William Gay, who has been very solid but I think a speedy guy like Royal can take advantage of Gay's lack of speed. I'm sure they will try to match Royal up against Gay and if he has help make sure Tyrone Carter, who also lacks great speed, is backing Gay up. Post-Gazette is reporting that Clark will sit out of this game - and thats for the best. I'd rather lose him for a game than for the season again and wouldn't want him to risk his life. If Royal gets a couple of big catches then I wouldn't be surprised. Also in the return game, Royal is dangerous. Good news for steelers fans though, Anthony Frazier - the steelers 2nd leading special teams tackler- will return this game. He sat out the last two games with a bruised thigh. The same two games where the steelers gave up a TD returns on kickoffs.
What helps the steelers out a lot is that Kyle Orton isn't a great deep ball thrower. Because of this ,denver is a 'play it safe' team that will let you beat yourself and not make mistakes. The dink and dunk method which offenses use against us will be in full play this monday. This method which you all know is full of short passes, slants, curls, short post, 10 or 5 yard outs, and screens. Because of the way our defense is schemed this is the most efficient way to move the ball down the field. The problem is it takes a lot of consistency and focus for everyone to stay on the same page. Usually the our defense is good enough to stop the offense at some point. Although we've been slacking on our 3rd Down defense, the Defense have stepped up these past four games.
We've (the steelers, not us) had two weeks to prepare for this game. Two weeks to get the perfect offense against denvers - mediocre defense. I say mediocre because well they have played against Cleveland, Oak, Cincy, SD. While the later two offenses are good now, cincy hadn't started clicking at week 1, and SD well no one can figure them out. The Pats were in a funk and Dallas had turnovers which is what Romo does so well. I dare say that is the best part of his game. Especially since this is the first time in his illustrious career that he has went three straight games with no turnovers. I think we have the offensive fire power to put up some decent stats and some points on this defense which is overrated imho. Baltimore's D showed us the perfect game plan to bottle up whatever offense denver had. I think we've have more than enough going in our favor for this game.
Although Denver is bruised right now from their lost against the Ratbirds, I'm not sure they have the moral to rally among themselves and perservere. Especially against an elite team coming their way. There is much to learn about teams so far this season and we will definately learn something monday night. For the steelers, we'll learn how they handled sucess, coming off a 4 game win streak, and the broncos we'll learn how they deal with losing for the first time under the new head coach. Either way you put it, my biggest concerns are trumped by my realism in that this should be another win for the black and gold if we don't turn the ball over. I say 21-10 steelers.

Or perhaps Cleveland?
KC, Cleveland Same difference. Although this year Cleveland seems to be way more dysfunctional than KC and is currently challenging Oakland for the crown.

Gay is just about the same speed as Eddie Royal. Personally I like it when Gay is matched up against people his own size as opposed to players who can bully him, and Royal is not a big guy and is not MW fast. If anything I’m worried about Royal after the catch. Gay has shown up until this point that he will let guys take the short stuff and make the tackle. Royal has the ability to make Gay miss, and then it’s off to the races.
I’m much more worried about that than a deep ball.

I don't think Gay will miss
Gay is not great in coverage but he has shown above average tackling ability, despite the highlight reel steamroll by Adrian Peterson. If he can keep Royal in front of him, he should be fine.

Royal is no where near
physcial specimen and shear greatness that is Adrain Peterson, he gets some repreive for that, that are many guys who know how that feels, ask that cleveland guy that got straight jacked up by a stiff arm and thrown outta bounds on AP’s first long TD run of the year.

Plus
Peterson buried Gay with a brutal helmet to helmet hit first. Will someone (looking at you Goodell) please tell me WHY it is legal for a ball carrier to lead with the helmet? I was at the game and you could hear that hit all the way up in the clouds where I was sitting. Now, the highlight reals will glorify that hit over and over. WTMF?

I’m not worried about that. Defenders are less defenseless (no pun intended). They are initiating contact and can choose to go low or high depending on the situation. A RB lowering his pad level by getting low makes it up to the defender to choose how they would like to tackle them. Unlike the opposite where if a defender leads with their heads the offense can do nothing to stop that.

Yeah the ballcarrier has every damn right to march his ass forward Chewie…
Gay should have been, well, less gay and bossed up and stopped Purple Jesus Judas style.
But alas, not many can do that. We did well enough on the day, I honestly dont blame Will.I.Am. I doubt many other players in the NFL’s secondary do much better.

well actually
it went just like judas style, judas (Gay) thought he had Jesus (Purple Jesus) all set up, but then Jesus had to go and raise from the dead and truck the crap out of Gay lol

Rules are slanted to give the advantage
to the offensive side of the ball too much already. I agree with and love a running a determined back who marches his ass forward BUT, leading with the helmet should be illegal no matter what side of the ball on which it happens to occur. Now, a stiff-arm or a ferocious shoulder would have worked just fine there. Peterson cleary lowered and lead with his head. I call shennigans.

You cant just declare shenanigans!
I know the rules are slanted towards the offense, no doubts there.
But bottom line is, a rusher is not using his head as a weapon, hes just trying to move forwards. Ballcarrier takes precedence IMO always.
Its called hardnose football, and I hate the rules that pussify the game. The last thing we need is our RB’s to be tentative about how they achieve forward progress.
by Mechem on Nov 7, 2009 5:20 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I appreciate your point of view.
However, if the league is going to allow the offensive ball carrier to use his helmet to achieve forward progress, then they must allow the defender to use his helmet to try and stop forward progress. I love hardnose football as much as the next guy. I love seeing these guys smash each other every week. I think it should be open season on QBs. All I’m saying is that the league has to either call it both ways or let it go both ways. I too, would much rather see the hardnose approach taken.
Apparently though, you are right, I can’t declare shennanigans since I can’t even spell the MF’er right. Ugh, and that was BEFORE the weekend was in full effect.

My only real comment on this topic
of Eddie vs. Gay would be that Denver rarely lines people up on the same side often. We have seen all the offensive players lined up at different spots. (which I believe is fairly normal)
So I will imagine Gay gets his chance to get bullied by Marshal, and Eddie gets some tries to burn Gay…..(Ben Gay?) sorry….anyways
I question your ability to stop Doom. That is where our D is going to hurt you the most, if B-Dawk the Ballhawk, and Doom and Gloom can get inside your house and rock your imitation #7…..(sorry just a joke because I know WHY Rothy wears the number) but if we can get to him, we have the advantage….if we don’t…..well…..we all saw the Baltimore game.
Though in no concievable universe do I see a score in the same ballpark as last weeks.
I, as a Denver Fan, do in fact have a minutia of Fear for Pit, unfortunately though, its only because of last week when I did not give Baltimore’s D enough respect.
Good luck all!! Is it Monday yet?

Here's the problem
Ben is one of the few Qbs that can be sucessful when defenders get to him. He isn’t your typical Pocket QB. Ask Jacksonville, heck ask the Ravens. Our offensive line has been miles ahead of where they were last year, we held Jared Allen to no sacks. But they are on the same pace sack wise but its not because of the o-line. They have actually created a pocket this year. You can have four sacks monday night and still lose. It will be interesting to see what game plan they have for denver. But what really hurt us this year is dropped passes and of course turnovers. Look at our two losses, we were about to start blowing the Bears out before been under threw Wallace, they still hadn’t really gotten their timing together down pack cause wallace is so fast, and thats how the bears stayed in the game, a dropped TD from holmes and two miss field goals later and bears win. Cincy, of course pick-6 keeps the bungals from being blown out and a drop TD pass keeps the game from being sealed. We have been beating ourselves in games. that will be why you win. If we play steeler football (which is 60 mins), take advantage of the oppurtunities, don’t turn the ball over, and play steeler D. There isn’t a team out there that can beat us.

Law has been in the league 15 years. That guy has seen it all, and done it all. Maybe ‘05 was the last year anyone threw his way consistently…The guy is an animal, and the only other corner that’s been around anywhere near as long, I think is Charles Woodson in his 11th pro year. They may not be as fast as these new phenoms coming out of college, but they have those years of footyball knowledge and experience.
On the other hand, the Denver DB’s have 5 members over 30, but 20 Pro Bowl selections among them…

How many probowlers did we have last year? And whos got the latest trophy… thats what I thought.
Denver gets lots of pro bowl love. They are flashy. They also aren’t winners.
They can go get Tony Dungy to play DB for them for all I care. Or get the raiders to get them Nahsdhfahma Ashomugugagaga but it wont matter.

You don't get to the PB by being a weak chump.
You get there by playing your position like an animal. You are right though, past pro bowls mean jack and shit, and jack left town. Besides, Ty Law’s 40 time 15 years ago was 4.47. Wallace is 4.28 now….I’ll take Wallace for the win, please.

here’s a couple deep ones I remember us at least trying

-Sheffler in the endzone against SD
-and probably many more that I can’t remember off the top of my head…..
now I may not ever say we have a GOOD deep ball…..but we certainly to TRY sometimes

It was
the last play of the first half against NE and Moss was there for his size to jump up and get a ball that would inevitably be fought over. Orton’s only interception, on a play that was destined to be intercepted but had a 1% chance of yielding points. Not enough time on the clock for anything else. its really an asterix next to the INT

vying for the most friendly fans or something?
Let me clarify though aside from his 1 pick against Tenn, he had 5 additional ones going into last night for a total of 6. Now he has 7. Orton has 4 now and what 9 TDs? Ben has 14 TD & 7 picks. Of course, Ben’s YPA is in the stratosphere. Hard to compare the two. Orton is Mr. Play-it-safe. Benjamin – not so much.

nope,
I am actually in DC but I respect a team who beats me, and outside of the Faiders and the Chargers there really isn’t a team that I despise, and therefore will respect the game as the sport it is.
I will talk my trash before the game, and engage in fairly educated debate (I say fairly because I’m not the most knowledgeable fan out there by any means) lol
After the game I will respect the other team in victory or defeat and a loss like the one we took to you is very humbling considering we honestly did have a chance to win it, and it was not as one sided as the score dictates.
We gave up two crucial interceptions, but otherwise our defense did play well overall. Just not well enough at the end o the game.
So I repeat. Good win Pit. good win. See you next time :)

oh and I forgot to add that I agree with
everything you said. It is hard to compare the two….but I will absolutely admit that Orton is certainly no Big Ben….Orton does not have the physical ability that Ben has, but the biggest dif is in the risk vs. reward mentality of the two as you stated.
I will say that (while some people would argue differently) for some reason Ben’s choice to wear the number 7 because of his respect for Elway (I can’t produce the piece, but I believe I read an interview where he stated that) has always bothered me….I guess mostly cuz he doesn’t play for Denver HAHA

Supposedly Clark had trouble due to sickle-cell AND some other condition, whereas Holmes only has sickle-cell. According to our coach, at least, there are several players on Denver that have sickle-cell, but because they lack the “other condition” they are fine.

What Steelguy99 said. I believe I read somewhere that the sickle cell trait is more common in African Americans. Therefore, there are a number of players around the league carrying it.

Only black folks
suffer from sickle cell anemia. It’s unique to their physiology. No one not of African descent can get it.
As far as i remember, it’s a very mysterious condition and can be very serious if not properly treated.
No football game is worth Ryan Clark’s life. He should stay hom and rest, the come out slamming next week….

slight correction
Latin Americans can carry the sickle-cell gene. It’s rare though. In the U. S., about 1 in 500 black babies are born with sickle-cell. About 1 in 36,000 Hispanic babies are born with it. Sorry about being so precise, but I’m a former science teacher!

For some reason
I have the feeling Big Ben will have a big game. I’m seeing 350 yards and 2-3 touchdowns, with Mendenhall breaking 100.
I also see our Defense ravaging the Broncos the last 2-3 quarters of the game. Denver will come out strong, but Lebeau will adjust and begin to shut down Orton.
Just my predictions. 28-13 Pittsburgh.

My gut feeling isn't always right
But last game I felt the defense would come up big, and that our offense would struggle for the most part. I like to say my gut is right 3/5 of the time.
I just have a good feeling about next week. Denver will play strong, they got embarrassed last week. But, as every Steeler fan knows, this team is good enough to go 19-0 if they play to the fullest of their potential.
I guess thats whats so frustrating about being a fan. Knowing how good this team is, when they come up short, you dont feel beaten by superior teams. You feel like we beat ourselves or just didn’t play to the level we are accustomed.

He usually does against Denver
Even in the 07 loss he had like a shit-ton of TD’s IIRC. And of course the AFCCG. He plays well in Denver. Expecting the same this week…
Although I’m still starting Hasselbeck against Detroit for my FF league.

thoughts
If, and I do mean IF, both teams play their “A” game…Steelers win..I think that BB is a BIG advantage over Orton..If we bring our “B” game we would beat their “A” game..Broncs fans would probably admit we have a more talented roster…Bailey is overrated..I saw BB destroy him in 05..

Kirschke and Timmons were both ruled out of the game today, so Im worried about a few things.
Kirschke has been playing very well so Im anxious to see if the combo of Eason, Ziggy, and Harris can do well.
Im also anxious to see how Fox can handle playing the pass. If I remeber correctly, his biggest troubles have come in coverage and Denver does a lot with the quick pass and dump offs to RBs.
With Clark probably out too, Ill be watching Carter and Mundy as well. I think with these guys out, Denver may move the ball fairly well early until the replacements can get used to how Denver plays.
