BTSC Weekly NFL Musings - Week 9 Edition
Another Sunday come and gone. I got to watch about 8 hours of football this Sunday on Sunday Ticket. Was very pleased about that. And I was very pleased that there were so many good games after having to endure several mediocre weeks of action in the past month.
On to a few thoughts of mine before one final Broncos-Steelers related post prior to Monday Night Football.
* Wow, hats off to Cincinnati. The Bengals raced out to an early 1st quarter lead and held on late to defeat the Ravens 17-7 at home. With the big victory - the second of the season over the Ravens - the Bengals ensured that they'll retain 1st place in the AFC North regardless of what transpires Monday night. Cedric Benson was a workhorse again, toting it 34 times for 117 yards. The game effectively was over when Ravens kicker Steve Hauschka missed a critical field goal that would have made it a one score game following an amazing strip of Ocho Cinco by Ed Reed late in the 4th quarter. I wouldn't be surprised if the Ravens find themselves a new kicker by season's end if Hauschka doesn't get his act together. If you don't remember, he missed a game winner against the Vikings several weeks ago. You can't put a solid team together on both sides of the ball and then have an unreliable place kicker counterfeit so much of the hard work being put in by the whole team. Baltimore didn't really deserve to win that game, but they put themselves in position to at least have a shot at forcing overtime. Hauschka didn't do his job though. The Ravens aren't on the ropes just yet, but they're in a big hole considering they have two tilts with Pittsburgh still on the schedule. Luckily for them, the Texans weren't able to edge out a victory in Indy and remain very much in the Wild Card hunt for now.
* Not good Green Bay. Two weeks ago they looked to be in good shape, but consecutive losses to Minnesota and now previously winless Tampa Bay and the Packers look to be pretenders. That's one shaky defense. You could tell though watching Tampa Bay that they wanted it more than the Packers. That's sad if you're a Green Bay fan.
* New Orleans and Indianapolis both escape and improve to 8-0. Matt Schaub and the Houston Texans have to be sick to their stomach after usually reliable kicker Kris Brown missed a potential game tying field goal as time expired. Ouch. The Saints meanwhile overcome a double digit deficit for the second consecutive week behind a big second half offensively.
* Not that Vince Young won the game for the Tennessee Titans, but he's been very solid through two starts and I'm sure plenty of fans are wondering why it took 6 straight losses for Jeff Fisher to give up on Kerry Collins. The Titans put up 34 points on a 49ers defense that has been pretty good for most of this year. Quarterbacks don't win or lose games by themselves, but if I'm not mistake, Young improved to 20-11 as a starter in the NFL. He's got plenty of work left to do and he'll need to do a better job keeping his head mentally the next time adversity surely heads his way, but for now, he looks focused and ready to work on getting better. Oh yeah, Alex Smith. I wrote a few weeks ago that I thought it was ridiculous that Mike Singletary gave up on Shaun Hill after struggling for only 6 quarters or so. Alex Smith threw three interceptions on Sunday and fumbled once, and there's little doubt in my mind that he won't make it the whole year before being benched back in favor of Hill.
* How about that San Diego victory? Wow. Just as they've done time and time again the past few years, the Chargers responded with their backs against the wall. With the Giants up by 3 and inside the 5 yard line following a P hillip Rivers turnover, the Chargers got the stand they needed to keep it a one possession game late in the 4th quarter. Then with just about 2 minutes remaining, Rivers atoned for his previous mistakes and led San Diego down the field on the game winning scoring drive to defeat New York by a single point, 21-20. San Diego improved to 5-3 and could find themselves within a single game of Denver by the end of Monday night. That division's going to be real fun to watch down the stretch.
* I still don't think Matthew Stafford should be playing for the Lions with a healthy Daunte Culpepper sitting on the bench. Stafford was pretty much awful again on Sunday in a winnable game against the Seahawks. After getting out of the gates nicely and building a 17-0 lead, Stafford threw 5 interceptions, several of which were just pathetic reads and decisions. That's six picks and zero touchdowns since returning from injury two weeks ago.
* Sheesh, the Arizona Cardinals remain impossible to figure out. Last week they look pathetic in defeat at home against Carolina. This week they smoke the Bears on the road. Kurt Warner throws 5 picks last week; and he follows it up and silences his critics with 5 TDs against the crumbling Bears defense. Strange team in a strange league.
* My keys to winning against Denver a bit later. Can not wait for this one after watching a very dramatic and action packed Week 9 unfold on Sunday. Go Steelers!

I voted for the Bengals
Because I thought they would lose that game and start to drop back, but those CB’s are seriously good. The front seven has improved and with shutdown CB’s like they have, they could be a playoff team. I’ve never doubted Palmer, he just never had a team like this. The Bengals aren’t going away.
As to kickers, Hauschka is an example of why I think Skippy will be back next year. short kickoffs and off-field problems don’t miss key field goals. A few misses early, heck even a very inaccurate season by Reed wouldn’t make him less reliable than what else is out there. I expect them to bring in some competition next year, but I don’t see him going anywhere before training camp.
The Whiz was great in the postgame, that was good stuff and I hope the Cards fans appreciate it.

Wow...
.
do those Bengals look good. I’m glad to be getting them at home now that they’re beginning to gel so well. They’re a lot like the Steelers, except that they can run the ball really well. It is encouraging that they lost to the Texans less than a month ago, and that they did so well yesterday partly because of their bye. Maybe they will have a letdown in their second week after their bye, just as the Ravens did…

Is that Ochocinco fumbling at a key moment in the game?

You know whats more impossible to figure out than the Cardinals? I can’t figure our how the hell we lost to the Bears. Yeah, yeah, yeah “Jeff Reed”, but still, we should have scored a lot more against them than we did.

How'd we lose to the Bears?
An offense that didn’t score points to match the yards that they put up. Same as the Bengals loss (throw in a pick-6 in that one as well for our offense refusing to put a team away).

Teams bring their A game all the time against the Steelers
And the Steelers seem to not have a very good practice to game execution factor on offense. I don’t wan to pin it on preparation and focus, but they come out rolling and then seem to miss opportunities. Then a team sees they are still in it and hit another gear. I think it has to do with offensive adjustments not working out. Arians needs to get better at adjustments.

Stafford stats
“That’s six picks and zero touchdowns since returning from injury two weeks ago.”
Uh, you kind of forgot to include the two touchdowns he threw for yesterday. One to Bryant Johnson and another to Pettigrew. He’s bad, just not THAT bad.

How is Cincy's win
more impressive than Tampa Bay’s? Cincy already beat them in Baltimore and they were home and they were missing their 350 lb ALL PRO NT. Tampa hadn’t won a single game yet…….and Green Bay can hang with most any team on most days.

I agree with you there
I was impressed how the Rookie kept his head and did his thing to close Green Bay out.

I’d say the fact that the Ravens offense was basically dominated the entire game. They gave up only 7 points and 215 yards all day to an offense that moves the ball very, very well. Doing that to someone in a division game is very impressive to me.
GB have proven themselves to be pretenders with an offensive line that seems worse than anything Ben has ever stood behind. Rodgers has been sacked at least 5 times in all but 3 games this year. He was banged up from last week and it only got worse this weekend. It is impressive for a winless team to get a win, but I just don’t think GB is as good as perceived.

Come on
They held Baltimore to about 270 last game in Baltimore. The score was similar too. You tell me you thought that the Bengals beating the Ravens would be more a miracle than the Bucs beating the Packers?

The Packers aren’t a good football team with that line. So it’s a bad team beating a bad team, I suppose it’s not that I’m not less impressed, rather I just care less.
I see the Ravens/Bengals game as relevant in football, even more so because I am a Steelers fan. I assume that is why it is getting many votes on here.

Probably right
Not many here would be interested in either Green Bay or Tampa. I have a friend that is a Buc fan so we watch them when I’m not watching the Steelers. The BUCS are BAD. Green Bay has played a whole lot better than Tampa this year. I was surprised they turned around and played a game like this even with a rookie quarterback. I was not surprised at all that Cincy did what they did especially since they came off a bye. By the way so did Tampa.

Only to be Young again!
Vince Young still isn’t accurate enough to be the main QB for a franchise and once teams go back to stacking against the run Titans will go back losing,at least until they can stop people throwing all day.

Giants collapsed late. I thought they’d be the class of the NFC, but they are in free fall and I am stunned. Team that are supposed to be dominant at the line of scrimmage shouldn’t be giving up fourth quarter leads.
Dallas had a nice win and are getting hot, but every time I see Wade Phillips on the sideline, I see “Looming Disaster” in flashing neon lights. He’ll find a way to screw this up. But for now, kudos to the Boys D and Tony Romo winning a tough game on the road.
The hot/cold thing with the Cardinals is a product of their QB. Warner can get as hot as the surface of the sun and they’ll look great. Or he can be off like in their opener against the Niners and the rest of the team can’t overcome against a quality team. Then there are the days when Kurt would be better off turning around and chucking the ball two-handed over his head like a bride tossing her bouquet. When he’s awful, he is Cleveland Brown style ugly.
As for the Colts, I’d rather that any discussion of them or the Patriots be banned for the next week on BTSC as the national media will be speaking of nothing else.

Coach at Dallas
I can’t see how WP will be back in Dallas if he doesn’t get to the SB. That means Bill Cower will have two of the deepest pockets bidding for him. Maybe even if Fox is fired he’ll consider Carolina. I just hope he’s in the NFC, I want to be able to root for him.

My only word about Colts vs. Patriots this week
I’ll be cheering for the Patriots. With a loss by the Colts, homefield becomes a possibility for the Steelers.
