Open Letter to Mike Tomlin from a Broncos Fan

An open letter to Mike Tomlin and the rest of the Black and Gold braintrust...

Dear Mike,
I truly think you're one of the top coaches in the league, and so forgive my presumption, but it can't possibly have escaped your notice that losing to the Broncos this evening would be the BEST thing the  Steelers could do to boost their playoff fortunes for the second half of the season:

Exhibit A: Those cats in Cincinnati nearly made the costly late error of beating the Broncos on opening day, but realized the error of their ways in the last 30 seconds and did the only prudent thing, tapping the ball to Brandon Stokely to preserve defeat.
They now control their destiny in the AFC North.

Exhibit B: The Cowboys were a team struggling to find their identity in Week 4, when Terence Newman made the play of their season, allowing Brandon Marshall to haul in his game winner and set off on that sublimely choreographed romp through the Boys secondary.
They now sit firmly atop the NFC East.

Exhibit C: The New England Patriots were destined for an AFC East dogfight with the Jets until finding their way in Denver in Week 5.
They're now a shoe-in for the division crown, and have rediscovered their championship swagger.

Exhibit D: The San Diego Chargers were reeling from inconsistent defense and a spotty running game before their special teams stepped up against the Broncos in Week 6.
They haven't lost since and will be a force to be reckoned with down the stretch.

Exhibit E: In a stunning show of contempt for deferred gratification and an utter collapse of discipline in the 4th quarter, The Ravens lost their way last week, and paid the price yesterday against Cincinnati.
They've been reduced to an impotent afterthought in the AFC North.

So Mike, you're a man among men, and a master motivator. I'm confident that you can find a way to fire up your troops and get them to bring their Z game tonight and "just lose baby."*

Sincerely,

A Fan

*After all, you wouldn't want to follow the advice of Al Davis these days, would you?

Seriously, Good luck this evening Steeler fans, and may the best team win....!!

good stuff – can’t say that I hope MT takes your advice, though!

Very funny.

Referring to Baltimore as an “impotent afterthought” is classic.

This is going to be a great game tonight.

I have to say

I don’t expect anyone here to take up your mantra……(of course I’d love it if they did but meh) but you really do have a point BC. lol I mean sure there are teams (as you already said) that are beyond our help but…..every team we’ve beaten has suddenly gotten their act together. I mean Dallas leads their division after last nights win, solid winning since losing to us?

Also, I fully disbelieve the notion that Mike T (unless your last name is thomas) would actually have responded, though I enjoy the sentiment lol.

This should be a wonderful game, and I can’t wait….I don’t even wanna be at work so I can go pre-game HAHA

Good call on Anchorman

I could see replacing the 40yr old Virgin with Anchorman. Sticking to my guns on the rest tho. I can’t stand Steve Martin, but even I have to say The Jerk is a good one.

I’d love to see a movie with Will Ferrell and Jack Black with the guys from Super Troopers.

Airplane
Caddyshack
Ghostbusters (This is a comedy)
Scary Movie
Super Troopers (This is one of the funniest ever. The first scene had me and my sister almost falling out of chairs and crying in the theater the first time we saw it. It was cool, because everyone else was about the same way.)

I would like to strike Caddyshack from my list

And replace it with The Holy Grail, in light of my just seeing Steel in FL’s post.

I posted too soon!

Scary Movie should be replaced by The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.

So my final list is:

Airplane
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (For explaining sparrow flight dynamics when carrying cargo)
Ghostbusters
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
Super Troopers.

That is my final answer.

It’s never going to be pretty or perfect, if you will, but they’ve got a great deal of belief in one another. They’ve got a great deal of resolve, and it was put on display. Our defense gets a lot of recognition for what they’re capable of, and rightfully so, but what you saw from our quarterback and our offense at the end of that football game is what they’ve provided for us all year. LOL!

Okay Broncos fan, you’re funny, thanks for the chuckle. Actually the Steelers control their own destiny. You see, the Bengals visit Pittsburgh next weekend. With a Steelers win we would be in a first place tie with the Bengals. If both teams win out, the first two tie breakers would be tied (head to head and within the division). The third tie breaker would be common games which would also be tied (hypothetically, based on both teams winning out) 11-1. The 4th tie breaker is conference games, and this is where the Steelers would win, they have one less loss in the AFC then Cincinnati. Therefore, the Steelers control their destiny within the AFC North, not the Bengals.

Bu-ut.

If they do the smart thing and lose to us tonight then the Bengals do control their destiny. I think that’s what BC meant :p.

My understanding of the phrase "control your own destiny"

is that if you run the table, you will win whatever it is you’re trying to win.

By that reading, no matter what happens tonight, the Steelers and Bengals BOTH control their own destiny. Whichever one defeats the other next week will be the one that is actually exercising that control, but neither one controls the other’s destiny. You CAN lose tonight and retain control of your destiny (and my advice to you is to do exactly that…).

The problem of course...

(First off, funny post, I rec’d it…)

However, there is faulty logic… if the Bengals lost to the Broncos, and therefore control their own destiny, the Steelers’ loss can’t help us.

Or… the Bengals loss can’t help them.

Can’t have it both ways… it is an intrinsic impossibility, since we are both in the same division…

by MarkJoel66 on Nov 9, 2009 4:34 PM EST reply actions

True, if we both lose we can’t both win.
