Steelers Expose Broncos In 2nd Half, Thump Denver 28-10 - Celebration Open Thread

That, my friends, was a beatdown of epic proportions in the second half. We'll get to the stats and some analysis on the most impressive 28-10 victory soon enough, but for now, a bit of celebrating and discussing the outstanding 2nd half performance. It was a long 15 days waiting for this one. By game's end, it was well worth the wait.

6-2, with a meeting with Cincinnati next Sunday for first place in the AFC North. Going to be fun!

Go Steelers!

Ziggy Hood looked possessed tonight.

Blitz – Please do an analysis tomorrow.

by yelloboo on Nov 9, 2009 11:52 PM EST reply actions

I second that

Ziggy played well. Tyrone Carter stepped up huge, too. How about that O-Line and Rashard Mendenhall (Mendy blocked well, too)? Outstanding performance in every way. Kick coverage was much better, Hines freaking hurdled Bailey (after all of our recievers burnt him), Ben was sharp as always, just a huge, huge effort in a great environment. How about that show of Steeler Nation support in the crowd tonite Go Steelers!! Here we come Bungles!!

Pure and simple, they out-physicaled them in the second half....

As Blitz pointed out, Denver is more a finesse team.

And maybe the Broncos ran out of gas in that rarified air up there in Denver. :)

Denver's Offense Scored 3 Points

3 points. Total.

And how many rushing yards? Less than 50 I think.

Great defensive performance, and a solid game from the offense, despite the struggles iun the first half.

And barely that field goal

William Gay had the tip in his hands for an INT on the last third down of the opening drive, but Troy hammered him (actually shoving him in the facemask) and knocking the ball loose. The Broncos O would have been shut out.

So good to see him jumping around and smiling on the sidelines. I’m sure he was riding the emotional roller coaster during the first half. Seems like a guy who does not like to be in sweats on game day.

DVRd the game

rewatching it now. Unreal on D, particularly in the second half. First half was a bit tough. You could tell they were feeling the Doncs out a bit.

Rashard was a beast tonight. Averaged almost 7 a carry against “the #1 Defense in the NFL.”

Glad Orton was finally exposed. Does harken back to the Redskins game last year after all. Only 1 meaningless INT coming into the game, left with 3 more meaningful ones, with one going for 6.

This is Pittsburgh Steeler Troy Polamalu getting knocked around by the Pacific Ocean in Hawaii yesterday...
Minutes later, Troy caught the ocean going over the middle and smacked it right in the mouth. The ocean fumbled, Troy recovered and ran it into the endzone. The ocean never messed with Troy again.

by Ragnar808 on Nov 10, 2009 11:42 AM EST up reply actions

I would more compare them to Carolina Basketball

The Steelers build their foundation thru the draft (Heels thru recruiting) and fill in weak spots(not 4 major positions ala the yankees) thru free agency.
The Heels use most of their freshman(Hansbrough came in as a freshman after they lost their top 7 scorers to the draft) to learn the system and fill in as needed. The Steelers don’t need their rookies to step right in and contribute for the most part(Troy,Rashard, Limas,Lamar ect.) Ben was forced into action earlier than he was suppose to, but that turned out pretty good.

Finally, they are on the same championship wavelength. 2005 SB champs: Steelers 2005 NCAA bball champs: Tarheels 2009 SB champs: Steelers 2009 NCAA bball champs: Tarheels
bet on the tarheels to win it all the next time the steelers win the SB. just sayin.

P.S. on the Pirates. They need to start with my first point on the steelers, which is build thru the draft. Their farm system has been horrible for the last 10 years so instead of letting the young guys learn behind the veterans they are forced to fasttrack them( McCutchen,Alverez) to be the cornerstone of a bad team. By the time the rest of the pieces fall into place from the farm( which is finally being replenished) our cornerstones won’t be under our control contractually and the guys with the money come in and BUY the guy we just built our team around in the prime of his career. seems like a fair system to me, :(

The wait for this game was killing me...

but it was worth it. Sure, there were mistakes, but the defense is hitting its stride, the running game is just scratching the surface of its potential and Ben and these receivers are a special unit.

A couple of quick observations:

-Ryan Clady is as good as they come and Harrison was still overpowering him on a regular basis;
-the run defense was just filthy tonight and they better be again on Sunday against Cincy and Ced Benson.
-although a lot will likely be made of the change to the quick huddle, the other difference I noted for the offense in the second half was taking deeper pass routes instead of crosses, hooks and outs
-Ben was 21 of 29 which is pretty impressive, but what was just unbelievable was how many of those completions came against Champ Bailey.
-Either Jaworski or Gruden made an excellent point about how Rashard has noticeably improved in his patience and how that has helped him read the blocking. Would still like to see him fight for extra yardage along the sidelines.
-Ok one critical point: That is six games in a row where either the offense or special teams have given up a touchdown.

by pghnorthside on Nov 10, 2009 12:29 AM EST reply actions

The short routes were driving me crazy.

No good veteran is going to be taken aback by a hook. I was beside myself. Maybe Bruce was setting them up, or Maybe Ben wasn’t feeling it early in the game and wanted some easier throws, or maybe they didn’t know how much time Ben would get, who knows; but those routes were driving me crazy. Opening it up really lets our core shine.

Holmes is a great threat on short and long routes and Wallace is so fast and runs very solid routes already. Then Hines doing what he does, it’s too much. I said it elsewhere, but what QB has 4 receivers better than Hines, Holmes, Wallace and Miller.

by Phantaskippy on Nov 10, 2009 3:30 AM EST up reply actions

42-3

most likely unless they had to settle for field goals which didnt seem like the case last night, and thats just from the second half, if they didn’t have an inept first half of offense it would have been even worse. Its good to have something to show the team after a big win like that, bring you back down to earth. Focus on correcting the turnover issues and get ready for cincy

Congratulations from a Ratbird fan

“Would still like to see him fight for extra yardage along the sidelines.” I couldn’t agree more that he needs to fight more for extra yardage. Noticed that S.Holmes got in his grill a little after that long run, pretty sure it was about that. It will be interesting to see whether the Broncos can maintain the focus and end up in a good spot at the end of the season.
Anyways I’m here to actually congratulate the Steelers and the way they fought back. No doubt you got a team built to win and should be very happy tonight. I’m rooting for you next week because I feel it’ll be easier for the Ravens to catch up with the Bengals than the Steelers.

Nice work on a decisive road win. The loss aside, that was in general, one of the better NFL games I’ve ever watched. As a fan of great defense, I have to give you guys some serious props. It’s good to see the Broncos rising back up to the top. A great fanbase and a class organization. Your new coach and those draft picks should help upgrade some talent, but you got yourself a good team that is playing better than it’s collective talent, and that’s a dang good sign.

It was weird seeing him run out and the clock keep moving, I guess that’s a new rule. I must have forgot about it.

He had two guys near him, and I don’t have a huge problem with RB’s avoiding unnecessary collisions. If he does that in a more important spot I’ll be upset at him.

Polamalu

It is a thing of beauty to see him back to near 100% healthy. When we had Denver backed up inside the ten up only four I was yelling “Polamalu time”. He proceeded to blitz off the edge and blow up the first down running play in the end zone and follow it up with the INT that gave us the ball back at the DEN 25 yard line which helped seal the deal.

by King Coebra on Nov 10, 2009 12:59 AM EST reply actions

Yea, that hit on the RB was a killer.

by betelgeuse on Nov 10, 2009 1:02 AM EST up reply actions

Here's what I'm writing home about

I’m a Fox believer — 7 tackles and an assist. He was everywhere, breaking blocks to catch the runner. It was so pretty. Not the pass rusher Timmons is, but he made some big tackles. He saved a touchdown with a tackle from behind when the Broncs completed on 4th and short.

More Mendenhall — I was stressing by halftime. Why weren’t we running more? Mendenhall was not stopped short of a 3 yard game until the 3rd quarter.

Wallace is exciting — More and more, he’s making clutch 3rd down receptions. All this and speed too?

Harrison is still the one — Whether by forcing the QB forward into Kiesel or by drawing a holding call to kill a 1st down conversion, Harrison is still worth the expense.

Of Course Carter — Only the most important playmaker of the first half. He made me seriously rethink our needs at FS. A new rookie SS should be in our sights instead.

I guess anyone can have a bad game but for one of the supposed top 2 or 3 corners in the league, he really looked bad. Especially against holmes

I hope you mean

a backup for 43. Not a replacement.

Bring a towel to the game. Black or gold or yellow. If you don't have one buy one, If you can't buy one, dye one!!!

I think Fox and Timmons would make a great ILB pairing. Sadly for them Farrior is still the best, and doesn’t seem to be slowing down.

What a great find Fox was though, he’s a great replacement for Foote.

Fox has been very solid. It’s silly how good our coaches are at developing talent.

Just got back from the game. Steel Nation was well represented. What a great game! McDaniels called an awful game and Orton looked inept. I’d say that crowd was close to 50% Steeler fans! Love it!

by Silverback92 on Nov 10, 2009 1:14 AM EST reply actions

Interesting comment on McDaniels. Really, I thought McDaniels was playing fairly smart up until the 2:00 mark of the first half. Although, if he was going to give up on the running game, Scheffler should have seen more of the field than Graham. Denver just couldn’t run and when they couldn’t, the play action that had opened up the middle of the field stopped working. At that point, McDaniels just didn’t have any player to consistently put in a favorable matchup.

Where you at?

where are all those posters that were calling for Tyrone Carter’s head the last 3 weeks?

The level of expectation does not change. Ryan Clark was the happiest guy in the house for his replacement.

repent , all of you Ty Carter haters. lol

by 1STstate bucco on Nov 10, 2009 1:17 AM EST reply actions

Well

I think it’s safe to say that the drop off from Polamalu to Carter is far greater than the drop off from Clark to Carter. Tyrone is a solid backup safety who clearly plays better when Polamalu is on the field at the same time. Of course there are nine other defensive players on the Steelers who seem to play better when Troy is on the field also.

I'll be the first to admit I was a T. Carter basher.

Now I get to eat my words, no salt.

After that pick-6 I told the guy sitting next to me “At least now Carter’s proving why he deserves a roster spot on this team.”

Well

Carter played FS last night while when he was replacing Polamalu he was playing SS. I am sure the roles are different and clearly Carter is more comfortable playing FS.

Mike F'ing Wallace

I am in love. This man is the real deal

Keyaron Fox looks like a starting Linebacker for the future, was pretty much brilliant tonight too

Admittedly one of those calling for Ty Carters head at the start of the season, but he steeped in and looked very fresh and energized. You can tell he cares about his buddy Ryan Clark, who couldnt sit still on the sideline

Ryan Mundy I’ll note looked electric too

Woodley was also routinely getting the best of his man, albeit the Denver short passing game got the better of our outside rush, I think that was as good a game you can have without having a sack.

ROY?

Could he win Rookie of the Year honors? I’m sure I am overlooking someone else, but I think his name deserves to be thrown into that conversation.

by Silverback92 on Nov 10, 2009 2:00 AM EST up reply actions

Sanchez will probably get it.

Which would be a joke. He’s decent — and will be very good one day, but to me (tonight obviously not included, don’t know why I was so worried) Knowshon Moreno is the AFC Rookie of the Year so far. Wallace is right there, and looks to be getting more and more oppportunties as the season goes on, so we’ll see.

Probably go to Percy Harvin

Wallace continues to impress

What really impressed me was how many tough catches the guy makes. Some of those throws from BB were pretty low and he went down and snatched them. With his speed and hands, he’s gonna be a real force in this league.

They were low because he totally over ran Ben’s throws. Well, some of them, at least…

Agreed

I think Wallace needs to work a bit on how he runs his patterns. Ben seemed to think he’s be in a different spot at times.

by Billy52 on Nov 10, 2009 2:36 PM EST up reply actions

I think Ben underestimates the kids speed

That’s why he underthrows him so much. I haven’t seen a receiver underthrown that consistently since Kerry Collins was making Moss look like a doofus in Oakland…

Riding home now

What. A. Game. It was amazing being there, probably only 20-25% steelers fans at the beginning, but walking out, it was nothing but chants of “here we go steelers, here we go”. epic. Will post more about the game in the next few days hopefully.

Very interesting remark from Hines

On Rashard: “I don’t think he realizes how good he can be,” Ward said of the young running back. “He’s a special back.”

from: http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/09314/1012213-66.stm#ixzz0WT5MDbHq

I agree. There are still some issues with Rashard, but the guy has tremendous talent. He has the potential to take an already very good offense to another level.

by pghnorthside on Nov 10, 2009 9:55 AM EST reply actions

He doesn’t have flat out FWP speed but he has an excellent burst that is equal to or better than FWP. If he stays healthy he is going to elevate our offense for years.

by qwikdoc on Nov 10, 2009 10:49 AM EST up reply actions

I’d sacrifice some speed (FWP) for better vision and tackle-breaking ability (Mendy) any day of the week. Throw in the fact that Mendy is a better receiver than FWP, and its no wonder the Pittsburgh rushing game is looking loads better.

joining Steeler nation

Im jumping on the Steelers bandwagon today -—- ill be honest i was a chiefs fan during the Derrick Thomas era -— but that team has to many problems -—- I was a steeler Fan in the 70s -— my first real game i ever watched was when the steelers played the cowboys in 79 -- hope i am welcomed here

We welcome all comers

The wagon is large, the suspension is fine, and there are refreshments. Enjoy.

Denver's O line

was a mess. Polumbus (RT) was lost – they had to have him backed up with either a tight end or another tackle (“tackle eligible”, my Aunt Flossie’s dentures). That in itself speaks to Denver’s lack of a running game, and to the pressures on Orton.

But to me the most impressive part of the game was the no-huddle – it’s like flipping a switch and feeling the turbo kick in. Just incredible.

Eason had a nice game, but Hood was a monster. He and Kiesel took it to another level. They were getting enough out of those two to allow the LBs to drop into short coverage and negate the passing game. Great coaching by Master LeBeau.

My heros have always been Steelers...
