How about Dennis Dixon in the backfield???

Hi, I'm a first timer to this site, but a fan since 1972 (super VII),,,Just a thought....I know we are very conservative on offense, but when Ben returns of Sunday (knock wood), are we allowed to field Dennis Dixon in another position??? It would seem to me that if given the opportunity he can both run and pass and with Ben taking the snaps could be a boast to the Offense.  If Charlie is out why not promote him to 2nd string?

So we have a dinged up starting QB and you want to take his only capable back-up (Sorry Palko you need more time) and risk getting him injured at another position? No thank you.

And all of our skilled positions are already rife with talent. We do not need Dixon anywhere but backing up Ben, if God forbid, he goes down again.

not for the whole game

but I think they should use Dixon a couple times a game if for no other reason than to make teams prepare for it. Also we’ve seen how effective he can be at running the shotgun option that why not give him a shot or two much like how some teams utilize the wildcat in certain situations

What happens when he gets injured?

Say he gets injured on one of those plays. Who is our #2 then? Palko? That makes me queasy.

Welcome to BTSC Bob!

I believe Dixon is second string now. In other words, Dixon is the first replacement for Ben if he goes down. That is why it is important to try and keep Dixon healthy. Our third string quarterback is Tyler Palko, he has only been with the team for about a week, and does not have a complete understanding of the playbook yet.

ooooo I don't know if I could handle another "Slash"

Been there; done that.

Wait a minute...

Slash was great when he was Slash… he sucked as a pocket passer.

I like the idea of recreating Slash!

by MarkJoel66 on Dec 2, 2009 9:24 AM EST up reply actions

I look at it this way..

I’d rather have Dixon be a really good QB that can run if/when necessary than to have him in multi-positions as a rule. (it’s like the printer/scanner/fax/copier…. does multiple things ok…but doesn’t do anything GREAT.)

I look at it this way

If Ben can’t finish the Season, the Steelers are finished.

So, I like the idea of making DD a slash player. Add SOMETHING to this offense to actually cause defensive co-ordinators problems.

I don’t like the wild cat per se… but in 1995, the Steelers made it farther than they should have, and a lot of that was due to the Slash position confusing folks… (And btw, Slash was really fun to watch!)

I don't like the Slash idea

I don’t like my backup playing wideout

+1

See my poast below, I dont think hes a WR fit. I want him involved on play fakes and a wildcat call or two a game.

by Mechem on Dec 2, 2009 11:42 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe not a WR

I dunno… But SOMETHING dammit. Let’s mix this up somehow.

BTW, I can’t remember Kordell ever getting hurt as a Wideout. And so far in the Wildcat, I don’t think there have been any injuries… keeping your QB in action might actually be better than keeping him in the sidelines in a jump-suit bought at Ross Park Mall…

Just sayin…

by MarkJoel66 on Dec 3, 2009 10:26 AM EST up reply actions

Dixon is about 2 inches taller and 10 lbs lighter than Kordell was

He’s a rail.

Meaning you have to be selective how you use him.

He's not as fast either

But I would rather see new ways of using him, than all of the ways we have come up with NOT using him, like we have been doing heretofor… (OK, heretofor might not be the best word choice for a sports blog, I know…)

Oh he was a BLAST to watch!

and something the NFL hadn’t seen in…I don’t remember another “Slash”. Kordell in that role was AMAZING and yes; it added another dimension to the offense that did indeed baffle and frustrate defenses. I’ll never take that away from him. What he was able to accomplish during that time was a boost to the whole team. I think those days are over though. He was a different type of athlete that I’m not so sure Dixon can fit in that mold. I’ve been wrong a zillion times before…. and you might be right; I’m just not feelin’ it though.

Dixon no2

Dixon should be our 2nd choice QB, i reckon hes better than Batch, Palko will be in there to make up the numbers. Dixon was impressive in the first half agaisnt Balti, Lets make him 2nd choice. And i do think that we could use him a few plays a game for a Pass-Run shotgun option.

by Loftus Roadrunner on Dec 2, 2009 5:26 AM EST reply actions

Im not on the Dixon band wagon

To me Dixon seemed terrible in the pocket. He missed a few open throws, and must have thrown 3 or 4 balls deep because it seemed like he had no idea what to do with the ball. Yes he is a rookie, and he did show a great deal of talent running and threw a few good balls in play action situations. But given the option ill take Batch (or any other conventional pocket passer) over Dixon any day.

I think our offense of late needs something out of the ordinary, and pluging in dixon a few plays a game could totally have a positive effect. But that would require Arians to be interesting and I am not sure if that is possible. I mean everyone saw Dixon’s big run that got called back sunday night and of course the run for a TD, and still he was kept in the pocket for the rest of the night…..so I am all for the return of slash, as long as he isnt under center.

by rickmottley on Dec 2, 2009 5:30 PM EST reply actions

NOT a bad idea

But one that is tough to implement.

Since Dixon is the #2 QB right now, yes he can be used whenever we please.

While Dixon lacks some accurate throwing ability, he sure does have potential to confuse.

Ideally we should run play action with him a time or two a game. Put him in the backfield, fake a handoff, just get the defense edgy. You just want to scare them. And then, maybe give him a wildcat handoff or something.

The idea, is to NOT give him much to do, but give the defense MUCH to think about.

Mike T is open

At his press conference, Mike was sort of asked this.

I don’ t know if he heard the question the same way I did… but he seemed to say that he would be willing to use DD in spot situations more now that he has seen him in a real game.
