Best Things, Worst Things Lately

Best Things I've seen lately on the field:

Dennis Dixon - could have been a disaster.  Looked very good given the circumstances.

Hines Ward - still effective, great hands, blocking, consistency.

Heath Miller - bad drop/interception aside, he has been effective and consistent along with Ward.

Mike Wallace - complimentary speed with Holmes puts the defense on the defensive.  Shown ability to catch and is getting better.  Great threat on deep ball, reverses, stretching the defense.

Rashard Mendenhall - running hard, good speed and power combo.  Better all around threat and getting better coming out of the backfield as pass receiver.

Worst Things I've seen lately on the field:

James Farrior - Inconsistent play, spotty tackling, lost in pass game at worst of times.  Big sack late vs Ravens was not enough to make up for poor play overall.

Lawrence Timmons - Like Farrior, has looked bad in vast stretches of recent games since injured.  Looked great on blitz plays resulting in sacks.  He should - he was untouched.  Tackling and physicality vs the run has been poor.

Ryan Clark - No explanation needed is there?  The big hits are few and far between, the TDs against him are not.

Coverage Teams - maybe nobody wants to play on specials since they are all World Champions.  Not for long with the lack of effort and poor results shown.

Rashard Mendenhall - standing on the sidelines on 3rd down -  Let's see... pass, pass, pass or draw or screen occassionally to the guy who comes into the game - Mewelde Moore.  Arians at his worst.

I know some flak is coming... let's here yours...

good to see you post franz, been a while

can’t argue with most of what you’re saying. mendenhall still scares me a little bit with how he carries the ball, but he does seem to be focusing a lot on ball security, including holding with two hands when he’s running up the middle. Otherwise it’s been a pleasure to see someone hit the hole with authority and not bother stutter-stepping on the way… Really hope Farrior hasn’t permanently lost a step, sure doesn’t seem to be the rock in the middle that he was last year, though.

thanks acrollet

I don’t post often during HS football season since I’m so busy. I find myself so frustrated I come in once in awhile, especially after my season ends and I see the Steelers lose !!

Farrior just looks off and I can’t quite put my finger on it. A little slow, a little less physical, a little timid or indecisive at times. He has played so well in the past it is tough to see him look bad.

Timmons is a bigger concern to me because he is young and should be better as time goes on. Having him and Farrior both at ILB and both looking bad creates huge problems. That 4th and 5 play was pitiful. Sure they get 5-10 yards on a well executed play or one mistake – that’s football. But the ensuing action and end result made them look bad 3 different ways – poor pursuit angles, out of control actions and worst of all atrocious tackling.

Me too...

Hard to disagree with anything you said, but I will add that I am a little disappointed in the poor tackling by our D lately. Too many YAC’s. I love it when Ryan Clark whacks somebody, but sometimes he misses, and that leads to big plays for the bad guys. Also, Farrior has had a couple guffaws this season, usually centered around covering a back out of the backfield. It could be that he has lost a step…and it is probably also true that O Coordinators are picking up on this and planning accordingly. I wonder why we don’t use Mendy more this way. He has pretty soft hands and great burst after catching the ball…hello Bruce, are you listening?

Clark

Yes, I too was excited at the possibilities with a big hitter at safety. Clark has shown an amazing lack of ability in playing the ball while it’s in the air. He does drill people at times but whiffing and being out of position at safety is a very dangerous thing for a defense.

Polamalu is on the ragged edge at times. He is so talented though, he makes up for mistakes by himself and others. That is why he is so good – speed, instinct and total effort make up for their inability as a cover secondary unit. Especially a year or two ago – just looked out of control and wreckless at times. He has looked really good this year but this injury is going to be with him all season. The leg injuries are going to change the way he plays long-term. He can still be very effective but the days of giving him no assignment and free reign will probably be short-lived. Plus, some of his freelancing is counter-productive vs the pass game. He does have good instincts and anticipation when at the LOS and playing run. He got hurt leaving his feet – the momentum and whip generated by launching himself on that tackle for a loss a few weeks ago did it.

Coverage Teams (or ST in general)...

…should be at the top of the “Worst” list, and listed multiple times. I’m now stuck in Taxachusetts, so I don’t get to see most of their games anymore, but I can’t say I missed seeing all of those returns for touchdowns. I think my head would have exploded (or imploded – one or the other) if I had seen the last couple they gave up. Special teams have been absolutely atrocious this year.

Coverage units

True – that has been the worst unit on the field by far. I didn’t really rank them, just typed out the things in my head in no particlar order.

The coverage unit problems are fixable. As a coach you can change personnel, change tactics and even kick it out of bounds if you are punting. Why they don’t kick it out of bounds after all their problems I have no idea. I wonder if the NFL discourages it in some secret way? If you are as old as I am or older, you will remember the Coffin Corner tactics used by all teams in the 70s and 80s. Pinning your opponent inside the 10 yard line by kicking out of bounds on a punt was the accepted standard. Crowds applauded on a well-struck punt by a Ray Guy which gave the opponent no chance of a return and poor field position. More recently the rage is to down the ball on a high kick. Only problem is they can’t execute it consistently and you still have the returner able to fair catch the ball, negating some yardage gain.

I think their coverage problems stem from attitude as much as anything else. No one wants to play on the cover unit unless you are very hungry to prove yourself. No matter what – I blamed Cowher before and Tomlin now for the poor play. You can’t let the players dictate what is important. Problem in the NFL is that you have limited numbers and it’s hard to shit-can more than a few people mid-season.

Lebeau's play-calling

He’s still putting in the same defences as if Polamalu was still on the field and healthy as opposed to reality that they have Carter back there.

My opinion Fox and Timmons should b the inside linebackers on 3rd downs with Lawrence dropping back in coverage with the RB
