Is this Tomlin's Wake Up call?
The past three years Tomlin has been on some what of a coaching high. Going 10-6 his first year and then winning the Super Bowl his second year. All along sing the same song, style points don't matter, bruce arians is doing a good job, I walk past 6 lombardies not 6 rushing titles, there is nothing wrong with the O-line. But what is tomlin going to do now, he's finally reaching the point were his team is not getting it done.
What needs to happen? First and formost strengthen the part of the team "where games are won"...the trenches. We need to sign/draft/bring in guys who will down right dominate on the o-line. For years we had "the line". A good o-line makes any middle of the road running back look great. Jerome Bettis when he was with the Rams had a crappy line, he comes to the Steelers and suddenly he's passing people on the All-Time rushing list. You think Emmit Smith would be where he is if he had a middle of the road line?...no he wouldn't. A better o-line would also allow/prevent Ben from doing his constant extend the play/don't throw it away run around until i get sacked/injured heroics.

what happened to lineup changes? scheme changes?
I like Tomlin, and I don’t want to join the panicking hordes, but Baltimore was gonna be about “redemption” and Oakland was gonna be about “unleashing hell.” But as a coach he needs players to redeem themselves and to do the unleashing and for those games they clearly did not. But for this week he talked about line-up changes and scheme changes to break a clearly unacceptable pattern of behaviour leading to bad outcomes etc.
Well those 2 things a coach can effect: they can make lineup changes and they can make scheme changes. Instead it was Keenen Lewis inactive, Ike Taylor showing no interest in covering or tackling anybody while Joe Burnett came in only to a return a kick (something that hasn’t really been a problem actually). And then there was all those predictable series of run on first and second down out of running formations then go empty backfield on 3rd down leading to a sack. I didn’t see any impactful attempts at line-up or scheme adjustments. So why say you’re gonna do those things and not do them??
Tomlin’s words and actions have been pretty consistent over his first 3 years and have shown an ability to inspire the team and get results. But for the last 3 weeks they have had no impact, in fact if anything they have had the opposite effect. And his words leading up to this week were about things he was going to do, and then he didn’t do it. I’m not sure we can know for sure if he has lost the locker room etc. And I’m not saying scheme changes and personnel changes would have made a difference. But it’s a bad sign when for several weeks in a row now the words of our eloquent and inspirational coach have failed to have any effect and when it has reached the point where he isn’t even responding to his own calls for action.

Yeah
I have thought for the past few years that Tomlin, though capable of being a superlative coach in the future, is still not there yet. Things like lacking identity, motivation, being outschemed, resting on their laurels maybe, have all plagued this Steelers team. He has the temperament, he has the intelligence, but he may be trying to reinvent the proverbial coaching wheel too much with past comments such as, and I paraphrase:
-there are two ways to address the offensive line: by filling those positions or improving the
skill players
-winning by any means necessary, having a fluid team identity; both beautiful ideas but i
wonder if (a) the players not brought up under Tomlin are prepared to be so flexible and
(b) a coach should not keep that to himself and on his shoulders while giving his players an
identity to execute at will and lean upon during hard times

where's Tomlin's coaching?
what has he done? nothing..this line has sucked for 4 years now and everyone knows it….its a wonder they won in spite of them for this long…yes in spite of them…..also i guess the defense needs a youth movement or some schematic changes…i see no leaders on D..no Lloyd..no Porter…no Woodson…nobody to stand up and call them out and raise the level of play…and this includes TOMLIN..if what a coach does when the chips are down as opposed to what he does when he inherets a super bowl contender defines him than he isnt the great find everyone made him out to be..he has no answers…none for 5 weeks…5 WEEKS!! of pathetic football from the steelers..unbelieveable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First of all, Jerome Bettis was NOT a “middle of the road” running back. He still had good numbers with the Rams 1429 yards and 1025 in the first two seasons (he had injuries in his third). Actually, his best yard per carry was in his first season with the Rams. It is awfully foolish to call a probable HoFer a “middle of the road” running back. Jus’ sayin’.
Moving on, our O-line has been pretty damn good this year (especially considering how they played last year when they won the SB). They have one bad game and they suck all the sudden? I don’t follow. Maybe we could replace one or two guys there, but a full scale fire sale on the line just seems a little bit ridiculous. Did we forget that Max Starks blanked Jared Allen and basically blanked Dumerville (his half sack was because Ben held the ball too long). How soon we forget, eh?
You know what would prevent Ben from extending the play and taking sacks all the time? Telling him to get rid of the damn ball or he will ride the bench. That is the only thing that will work. No OL in the league can hold their blocks for 5+ seconds. Do you want to know why Peyton Manning is the least sacked QB per drop back? Because he does not hold onto the ball for that long. He goes through his progressions quick and then checks down or tosses the ball away in under 4 or 5 seconds. Ben does not do that. And until he learns to do that he is going to take sacks and be a concussion risk.

I would like to say he might require more maturation
But this might be something he either has or doesn’t. It would be nice to see him pick his battles better. On one of the sacks, I believe the one that pushed us back to 3rd and 19, he was sacked after 7 seconds. Absolutely incredible, that is on Ben and for sure on Arians. I understand the argument to keep consistency with the QB/OC dynamic but this scheme does not provide the reliability necessary to have consistent Super Bowl aspirations.

i dont agree
i think the O-line has not been pretty damn good this year…even if you want to blame Ben for 50% of all his sacks, they cant run block to save their lives, part of the reason they are so pass happy is…wait for it…they cant run!…could you even conceve of the running game carrying the load 1 time this year if they needed it? no because the line sucks soo bad no one could ever consistantly run there and they cant usually pass block either…yes they arent as bad as last year but cmon they are still ridiculous…hey Ben is having a bad day..lets run…ya right…and B.A. might not even be able to figure that out anyway…but my whole point is what the heck is Tomlin doing about the way the team is playing…i want him to show that he has some kind of plan or skill at gameplanning…something

How is Mendenhall averaging 4.8 yards per carry this year if the O-line cannot run block? And he had 5 games with over 5.0 ypc and only two games with really bad ypc (I am excluding week 1-3 since he didn’t start, 2.8 ypc against Cin part 2 and 3.3 last night). There are several games this year where if we had run the ball more I think we would have won (Chi, Cin part 1, KC, Oak). The team can run if the play calling is not transparent.

I’m not saying JB was a middle of the road back. It was an example. Look at Willy Parker, when the line was great he was consistant back. Think about how great of a back Mendenhall will be if we got some dominate run blockers. Mendenhall is already on track to be a good back but could be great with a great line.

And if we would turn those pads downfield
and quit that stop and fall forward when going lateral.

I’m hoping to ruin the Ravens playoff hopes and beat the Dolphins. Green Bay is going to be ugly…

I'll watch
I’m drawn to watching a train wrecks. But, I have lost my edge since the Raiders debacle and not gotten myself all worked up. The Ravens game is definitely a must win IMO. Also, I want to watch and see if they work in Sweed/Fox/Rookies. Just to see what we got going on for next year.

They should
go ahead and let Ward get his 1,000 yards and then let Sweed in. At least work him in.

Could be interesting
One of the major arguments is that Sweed was unable to thrive under the consistent pressure thrust upon. If he can get his lumps in during these last few weeks, it could be highly valuable.
By the way, I have to disagree with one thing in the first comment. If I am looking for positives, Timmons is there, but moreover so is Burnett. He showed excellent instincts breaking on the ball and seemed to provide excellent coverage. Woodley is showing great improvement, though I did not see Harrison a ton. Without rewatching the game, I will presume they schemed him out of the game. Heck, even William Gay played better to me last night.

Harrison played well. Had a few good sacks and one or two noticeable over-pursuits that I noticed, but who wasn’t doing that when Cribbs had the ball last night?

The scheme too
When you keep seeing the blitz on third down, you might want to run some plays to combat that. I predicted sacks on at least 3 3rd down plays last night ( and was right), bacause I could see the blitz coming, and I could see they were locked into a play. Audible anyone?

Either it is something I do not understand about the blocking scheme
Or Justin Hartwig seemed to be making consistently bad decisions all night. He seemed to either miss the blitzers and then not provide the necessary calls, or double team in the wrong places, running straight past guys that went unopposed to the QB. Some of the sacks were definitely on Ben, but some were straight whiffs by the O-line. I guess it is a good sign that we have become unused to that so far this year.
Here we go Colbert!

Tomlin has to take some blame
The Steelers clearly are in the top 10 in the league in terms of talent, even with Polamalu and Aaron Smith out. (Other teams have injuries, too.) Our offensive skill players are all above average, several lineman have played well, the LB corps is outstanding. Yet the team is at 6-7. No other coach in the NFL is doing as poorly with this much talent.
Professional football players should be motivated at all times, but in fact, they are not. The head coach is responsible for keeping the players at peak determination. At critical points in the game—red zone, fourth quarter—the 2009 Steelers have consistently shown a lack of determination. That has to go on the head coach, at least in part.

I think it's probably an automatic insult service he's using.
Many Bungle fans have one, but this year thy’re using it on other teams’ blogs instead of on their own.
