Driveby Report: "You lost to who?" edition

Let the discussions begin.

1.  Get out the golf clubs:  Seriously...did you want this team to get into the playoffs?  I have better things to do with my time than watch a game like I saw last night.

2.  Timmons:  Blame him all you want.  I say you haven't been paying attention.

3.  Madison:  He is an upgrade.  But the special teams still don't get the job done.  On the Cribbs return he was on

4.  The team:  The team needs to take the blame.  Quit trying to single out players and coaches.  They all take turns messing up.  This losing streak belongs to the team.  The offense sucked eggs but the defense didn't make stops they should have. The special teams had problems as well.

5.  Ben:  I understand you make plays by holding the ball, but in those conditions and the way they were playing disciplined pass rush, you have to get rid of the ball.  There was one time however, that Ben leaves the pocket and gets sacked. If he stays there for a second longer he can hit Holmes for a TD.  I know easy for me to say...I admit it.

6.  Rush-Hard:  Pretty good job, but I wish he would quit stopping and lower his head and try to break some tackles when he's going wide.  When he gets to the point he wants to head up field he stops half the time.  I give it to him, he has done it less lately.

7.  Woodley:  He definitely elevated his game.  Cleveland had some plays that they ran specifically to exploit him.  They didn't work.

8.  Red face:  The Referee for this game made me cold just looking at him.  He looked as miserable as I felt watching this game.

9.  Hampton:  If that dude gets in shape (cardio) he would be unstoppable.  As it is, he's stoppable by fatigue.  He handled Mack for a play or two then just got in the way a few (which he is supposed to do).  I'm just saying....

10. Good news:  The Browns didn't score in the 4th.  HA!

11. Hines:  Made some plays, but I can't help to wonder if someone else could have made those plays and got more yardage.  He was limping some.

12. Logan:  I'm not hatin on him, but I think he's not going to be here next year.

13. Hungry?:  Hide the Snickers! Did you get it?

14. Question:  Look at the game again.  Can you tell me how many times there were 2 receivers in the same place?  You'll be surprised.

15. Check down:  I was surprised that Ben checked down more often.  Sometimes it worked other times the throw was a little off or just dropped.  Please do more of that Ben.  It will pay off in the end.

16. Sixteen: This is where I predict we will draft.  I'm not joking.

17. seventeen:  If I'm wrong this is where we will draft.  Ok I'm joking about that. Seventeen Loooooooong weeks this year.

18. Schedule:  Hardest schedule in the league=Super Bowl. Easiest schedule in the league=crap bowl

19. This one is yours:

Rec'd as per usual

1. Let me know if you are in the area in the spring. I will hit 9 or 18 with you. Forewarned though, I am awful at golf but love to play. You will not go home unamused.

3. How pathetic was every tackle attempt on Cribbs last night? I assure you I could have tackled him better than some of those black and gold last night.

4. Agreed. Team game, team blame.

5. This was the worst game Ben played all year. IMO, he was never in question as being a reason we lost a game, until last night.

7. How about that “Woodley Show Series”. 1st and 10, Woodley Personal foul face mask. 1st and 10 Woodley sack for 9ish. 2nd down Woodley stuffs the run. 3rd down Woodley gets a pass deflection and near interception. Well done Woodley. Easily the best defensive series we had.

10. I know the comment was tongue and cheek, but they basically were “scoring” in the 4th. That one drive was what? 6 full minutes or so….

11. Sweed….

12. Yep.

13. No.

15. Check downs can be very nice! That is…if your players catch them.

19. Give it up to Rob Ryan and his schemes last night. He seemed to be nose deep in our playbook and made the right call on almost every play (especially in the 1st half). Kudos to you sir. Keep in mind they basically had some players in there who were “picked up off the street.”

19. Have to give him props - Arians didn't put up much of a challenge either

No changes in the second half! I was like…what!? No adjustments?!

1. Most def. I am hit or miss. I can score in the 80’s and I can score in the 100’s. I can be in the fairway or I can spray ’em like a driveby.

11. You’re right. I wanted to see him. Everyone else was dropping passes, but maybe Sweed would get open.

13. It was kinda corny…the team wasn’t hungry…..don’t let them have Snickers….I know…boooooo

20. I should have given Holmes some props. He played very well. The real bright spot onf the offense last night.

Thanks bro!

20. Yeah I don’t think I have seen much mention around today that he broke 1000, the first time in his career. At the beginning of the year I was hesitant at the idea of bringing him back next year. At this point, if they don’t resign you might see a grown man cry.

Of course everything is tempered by failure

And that dropped dumpoff, but was anyone else pretty ecstatic to see Mendenhall as our 3rd down back, especially on a night when Mewelde Moore seemed unable to field a simple kickoff.

Sorry, I wasn't ecstatic about anything

I really didn’t see any real identity in what they were doing besides losing huge chunks on pass plays.

4. Amen.

5. Yeah, that is Ben this year, takes sacks when nobody gets open, gets happy feet when someone does, the guy can’t win this year.

7. The Woodley series was my favorite part of the game.

8. I had to walk 8 blocks to watch the game, I could not have played in that game. No way.

9. Easy solution, the PNC park Perogi races.

11. At some point he’ll be gone, that is a sad truth.

14. Watch. . . again. . . How dare you sir, how dare you.

15. Rashard could lead this team in receptions, so could Heath.

18. I think we both brought that up in preseason.

19. Where was Keenan Lewis? I watched that whole game waiting for him, and he was inactive. Roster changes pheh, Holmes punt return, Rashard on third down and 4 series of Bernett at CB (looked good, better than I would expect a rookie to do) is it? The redemption wasn’t, Hell unleashed looked like a burning poo bag and now roster changes many teams would do without any announcement at all? I know I champion the calm and steady approach, but I would like a little overreaction for my fandom entertainment.

5. perhaps they could put an electric collar around his neck that zaps him if he holds the ball for over 10 seconds.

Top picks are rarely worth it

Suh has never played a down in the NFL, and yet he will receive a contract that will make him the highest-paid defensive lineman in the league. He looks great against college kids, but what are the chances of him being a bust in the NFL? Or being average? Or even being Casey Hampton? I like Big Snack, but I wouldn’t make him the highest-paid guy in the league.

10-15 is a great place to be in the draft. Lots of really good players available, but the contracts are much more reasonable.

I don't like Mays as FS

If we do pick him, let him train under Troy as Troy’s successor. We need a ballhawk as a FS, and Mays is a straight up Polamalu type player. I like him as backup SS. However, we probably won’t draft in the first round for a backup anyways so I highly doubt we pick him up.

This is Pittsburgh Steeler Troy Polamalu getting knocked around by the Pacific Ocean in Hawaii yesterday...
Minutes later, Troy caught the ocean going over the middle and smacked it right in the mouth. The ocean fumbled, Troy recovered and ran it into the endzone. The ocean never messed with Troy again.

can we draft an offensive coordinator?

what the hell was up with all of the empty sets against a blitzing defense playing press man coverage with no WR’s who could separate? and what’s up with the continued love for 2 and 3 TE sets when we only have one TE who can play? and when did 15 degrees and windy mean spread ‘em out and chuck it around? i’m just sayin’…

Can Carey Davis catch?

I’m watching this Leonard Weaver guy in Philly bust open the charts for Andy Ried (he also doesn’t know what a fullback is) and can’t help but wonder if we should be looking to pass to Carey and/or David Johnson some more.

Seems the O is too in love with the vertical game this year. Doesn’t eat the clock either.

Rec of course.

I’m good with Timmons, he’s been playing a lot better IMO. Woodley has become the player he was last year as of late. Slow start, but if the other team is scheming for him, that might be a piece of it.

15) Specifically. I guess I just don’t understand the game as well as I thought I did. Heath has pretty much disappeared the last few games. I know he dropped some lately….I’m thinking it’s because he’s surprised to see it coming his way.
How about Mendy? He’s had what, 4 or 5 recptions this year that have gone for 10+ yards – so why doesn’t he get it at least a second or third time in a game? One and done????
How about play action? In cold, windy weather, down by less than 2 TD’s, is there any explanation for an empty back-field?

This team lost the identity

In 2005 the team against all odds won 8 straight games to win the SB when nobody count it.
Last year the toughest calendar and won the SB
This team has showed can play against adversity
For me the key lost was vs the Bengals because meant a lot of for this team and what happened? can’t win since then
Is frustrated to watch the way the Steelers are playing and for my personal point of view don’t think can’t win a game this season

What do you think about this?

In the NFL, if you ar every successful your next season opponents uses the offseason to figure you out. That means you will have to adjust at sometime during the year because this is a copycat league. When one team figures you out the rest will copy that until you can overcome it.

Do you think the adjustments haven’t been good enough, the talent can’t handle the adjustments or a combo of the two?

As said before

The Steelers (for the majority) seem to lack drive and are playing as though entitled to do well, and have not committed to changing their style of play in advance of the adjustments other teams would make to them. Last time I remember us looking like this was 2003 when teams figured out the season before to just throw at will on us in the dink-and-dunk Raiders style of the times. We were powerless and unable/unwilling to change until the offseason. We drafted Ben, Starks, and the indefatigable Ricardo Coclough and went on our run. We will probably tweak the schemes, as well as Arians’ employment status, in the offseason, get another player or two to build around and start again.

I don't think they've made any adjustments.

There was a long time when we did what we did and the hell with the other team. Those were the famous grind it out days when we did the smashmouth running game. “Here we are, we’re going to do this, and stop us if you can.”

We fucked it all up by getting so fancy.

I also think we're losing by the same slim margins we won by last year

We pulled so many games out right at the end last year… and this year we’ve lost those games. Some of it is adjustments, some is injury, some is age. Talent has a lot to do with it. On pure talent alone, was there anyone on the field better than Josh Cribbs tonight? And wouldn’t you like to have some #1’s like Alex Mack and Joe Thomas on our o-line right now? We don’t have a hell of a lot more talent than most teams so we have to get by on coaching, execution and good fortune. Little of that has been on our side this year.

Adjustments?

BA’s game plan last year was to design plays that barely worked, if at all, and then let BB do his thing with the trademark sandlot improvisation. This was, IMO, so weird to opposing DCs that it actually worked for a while, because they would gameplan for the actual designed plays and get caught out by the improvisation.

This year, BA “adjusted” by designing plays that were even worse, so that they would break down faster, and therefore capitalize on more improvisational shake-n-bake. Surprisingly, this appears to have not been effective.

seeing the field

through out this season and the past holding a ball and not getting rid of it is a major problem with ben, and arians not helping coming up with better plays to exploit a defense i seen a few times holmes or ward could have went under the d backs and have a 10 or so gain instead of turning to the outside,, frustrating

4. You're absolutely right

Rec’d, BTW. I look at this season, and it’s a different aspect of the team losing it for us each week. One week it’s STs, then it’s the D giving up late leads, or the O with 3 and outs late the game. Right now, this whole team sucks pretty bad. The only possible consolation is the numbers that Ben, Hines, and Tone have put up this season. Small consolation . . . . Well, there is the probable top ten draft pick.

he may rip someone’s head off

PCLs take a long time to properly heal though

This is actually what they say about them "You can play with a sprainied (that is the actual word used, not strained) PCL as long as you can deal with the pain. It is supposed to heal for months. Now it’s been years since I dealt with these types of injuries so there may be new info….anybody? is there a doctor in the house?

Not a doctor

But I can say from living in the Houston area that, when Andre Johnson had one last year, he was week-to-week for about five weeks in a row and ended up missing nine weeks with a mild sprain. Given the instability in the knee already, Polamalu needs to be careful, especially given the fact that the PCL controls initial acceleration and then stopping. Though Troy has never been that good at stopping. In short, it is a very tough injury to predict when it will finally be healthy.

But, I would rather see those in winning season. Pretty much agreed on Troy and Sweed, though.

19. BA is on the way out

its about 13 degrees outside and with the wind chill its -12 with a stiff wind of 25 MPH and gusts of 40 so we decide we are going to throw the ball at all times we’ll run it occasionally but when the ball is more like a rock and you have to have a holder on KO we’re going to throw the ball the whole game. Now I’m no OC but whouldn’t common sense tell you to run the ball in that situation or on a 3rd & 1 why not use a fullback.. wait “There is not fullback in MY Offense” well you need to find one for games like this so we can pound the ball against the Cleveland Browns or any team for the rest of this season cause it’s not going to be warm till we head down to Miami. What I’m tryinbg to say is "When you run the ball good things happen.

For all Tomlin's apparent desire for flexibility

Both the scheme and playcalling have been seemingly immune to adjustments so far this year. Not to mention, Arians has to be one of the most inflexible coordinators I can remember. It must be something about Cleveland. Like if you fail there, you might as well have failed everywhere. I submit Belicheck and now Arians as evidence. Getting fired in Cleveland creates a bunker mentality that locks people into what ever they have done previously and prevent any further progression. It would be amazing though to see Tomlin with coordinators that match his desire to be context responsive, if in fact that is his true personality.

The only flaw in this post is that it makes absolutely 100 percent perfect sense. So, of course, the current group of nimrods running the offense would never think of it.

investment

as a Steeler fan watching the browns run the ball and not us was very hard,, i mean very hard. we have gotten away from what we have always done,, known for controlling the game,, pounding the opponent play after play,, the first series with 3rd n 1 and ben is in shotgun,,, cmon that to me depicted the whole game,, how many times in the past facing that same scenario was that a given first down,, no sweat!!!! we come out and throw on first down we are going to throw on second,, watched it all year dont ya think the opposing team knows that also,,,,

Concussion effects?

Anybody else wonder if Ben was all there last night? He moved around in the pocket much less than normal. A Browns fan told me today he’s never seen Ben go down so easily.

There was a wierd play where Ben, under pressure in the pocket, standing still, moved the ball from his right hand to his left, and continued standing there. Finally he was brought down. What was he going to do when he shifted the ball but didn’t run or scramble? He looked like a statue.

He didn’t look for shorter routes when the pressure kept coming (since he never throws it away) and didn’t seem to audible much. The blitzes looked pretty blatant most of the time.

If Ben wasn’t 100% upstairs, but not concussed, this is the kind of game I’d expect him to play. Not sharp mentally and some (but not all) of his throws off the mark.

by upabob on Dec 11, 2009 1:49 PM EST reply actions

Yeah

He also threw the ball where NOBODY was. We watched him do that multiple times and we wondered what he was doing. If he cannot give 100% he should not be in the game. Dennis Dixon should have been in, because Ben was really really bad.

What about LeBeau's failing to adjust?

Quite a few comments around that Arians didn’t make any adjustments to the Browns pressure. Gotta agree: empty backfield against relentless pressure with a QB tthat doesn’t throw it away and displayed an unusual lack of elusiveness. Ugh.

I’m a HUGE LeBeau fan, but what was he doing last night? Every time that the Browns put Cribbs in the wildcat, the Steelers reacted like they’d never seen it before. Cribbs never threw it, and most of the time he simply ran wide left, getting around the corner more often than not.

After the pattern was established (and it was done early) and the Browns went wildcat, why didn’t Timmons line up wider, denying Cribbs the corner and tackling him or pushing him back inside? Time after time, Cribbs got around the edge, the linebackers chasing him along a flat angle and not getting there. The guy was 80% of their offense last night.

The other 20% being a guy just off the practice squad who was running in Canada before that. Good lord.

by upabob on Dec 11, 2009 2:53 PM EST reply actions

Thats an execution problem, in my opinion...

Cribbs isn’t given enough credit for his ability to read the field, that’s his real strength. Defenders were around him, they just didn’t get him. That’s execution.

On the flip side, they executed those plays really well. He had blockers in front of him and he was running hard. I’m sure there was something LeBeau could have done, but for the most part, the guys just have to make the plays on the ball carrier.

19. Something smells bad.

When Hines complained publicly about Ben’s injury status, the red flags and sirens went off in my head. There’s something unresolved in the Steelers locker room, and it involves the QB. The hell with the weather last night – our offense has been teh suck since the Denver game.

Yeah, the defense has been up and down, but the offense has been uniformly bad against some of the worst defenses in the NFL. The O has played without pride or passion, and at times some of these guys look like they’re going through the motions. This doesn’t look like the Steelers of the past, even in bad years they brought everything they had.

My heros have always been Steelers...

by wozzle on Dec 11, 2009 3:41 PM EST reply actions

agreed..

Ben needs a little competition at QB…he’s done good things over the agregate, however, I sense a ‘disturbance in the force’ between the OC, QB, and remaining offense. Sounds like a little resentment. Tough for us to say when we’re not there living and breathing it with them every day. Wonder if there is an ‘equity’ issue amongst the ranks?
