Rumors of coaching changes

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4738788

not sure if this has been posted yet and if it has I apologize.

According to ESPN Ligashesky(confirmed) and probably Arians will be gone after the season. Many of us have been clamouring for it to happen awhile now.

Arians just didn't know how to use his weapons. It was a shame that an offense with Ben, Ward, Holmes, Wallace, Heath, Mendy, Moore, Parker, and even Dixon could see so many pitiful games. Thats more weapons than some teams have on their whole roster (I'm looking at you Detriot).

As far as Ligashesky goes, I don't think this is surprising at all......no one should be shocked about it.

I'm curious to see what happens with the defense though....Lebeau has had a crappy season but we're not about to begin to turn our back on him, nor should we. But the D has probably been the biggest let down of the season......wonder how that will be fixed.

Edit: Zierlien might be gone as well.

B/C we couldn't/didn't run the ball in the red zone

Even with some success there’s a negative to go w/it. Not that is all BA’s fault, as the players still have to make plays, but I don’t there was much of a running strategy down near the goal line. Willie Parker had 2 TDs that year. Sure 1200+ yards, but 2 TDs only.

If we fired him now it would make our offense even worse. Let him have the rest of the season then say goodbye.

The Hell that Tomlin & the Steelers have unleashed on me this December is indescribable.

by John Stephens on Dec 13, 2009 4:50 PM EST up reply actions

dont nesseccarily agree there

I would hope Tomlin has a good grasp of his offense, and Ben can call some plays in there too…..

but it doesnt matter, cause Steelers dont fire mid-season, nor should they really.

by shleeve on Dec 13, 2009 4:53 PM EST up reply actions

There is good documentation of people firing their OCs midseason and having extremely poor results. There is no need to make a bad situation worse.

The Hell that Tomlin & the Steelers have unleashed on me this December is indescribable.

by John Stephens on Dec 13, 2009 5:02 PM EST up reply actions

not every team has a good head coach and a QB who can call plays very well…..but at the same time i don’t agree with firing people mid-season, but at the same time I don’t like Arians……..double edged sword for me.

But the Bills are a good example of firing gone wrong. Look how pathetic their O has been this season since firing their coordinator right before the season started.

but once again, theres the ‘what do we have to lose factor?’ We’re still technically in the hunt but thats a bigger longshot than vassili zaitsev ever had to take. So, part of me is like, why not?

by shleeve on Dec 13, 2009 5:12 PM EST up reply actions

he calls the no huddle plays, no huddle works very well for us……im putting two and two together

by shleeve on Dec 13, 2009 5:18 PM EST up reply actions

When was the last time the no-huddle worked? We are still using it.

by Phantaskippy on Dec 14, 2009 12:55 AM EST up reply actions

in my opinion, the no huddle has tanked as often as it has led to scores this season. I haven’t the numbers nor the time to dig through tapes and other nonsense to come up with concrete numbers, but as of late, the no huddle has been as strikingly ineffective as BA’s standard play calls. for all intents and purposes, big ben is mini-BA. they love each other and often times love calling similar plays! 3rd and 1? get that pesky running back out of my backfield and let me bomb that secondary!

by klompus on Dec 14, 2009 1:00 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah it stopped working reliably about half-way through the season. I think it is more the case of defenses being prepared for it and thus the no-huddle being effectively countered.

Last year it was amazing because defenses went into a base cover defense and didn’t get good pressure against the no huddle, and then the receivers were facing a base defense that they could exploit while Ben bought time for them. It just doesn’t work that way anymore.

by Phantaskippy on Dec 14, 2009 1:47 AM EST up reply actions

That's probably true but...

… those OCs that were let go probably also had more than 4 plays, each with 3 variations. What does BA have… I guess I stated his playbook in the 1st sentence.

Clean out the OC & DC lockers now and watch the team spirits & performance pick up.

AND, if Tommy doesn’t clean the lockers out, Rooney should show him how.

DO THIS MONDAY, neither one is performing his job so do we really need to pay for their airfair to Miami?

I’ll do their jobs right here for the rest of the season (without headphones) >>>

OC… uuhhhh… Mendy run right B Gap X block. Next Play, uuhhhhh… 6 Wide Out, throw it somewhere Ben. Make me look good Ben !!
     offense done for 3 weeks.

DC… send Carter on delay blitz & Ike cover deep (he’s good at that), Harrison do your thing. Next play… secondary drop back 15 (even if it takes you out of the back of the endzone), Woodley do Harrison’s thing too. Everybody push them out of bounds.
     defense done for 3 weeks.

by Hollywood Steel on Dec 13, 2009 9:42 PM EST up reply actions

Don't agree

While I understand where you are coming from because that is usually the case when you do in season firings. There is no down side to letting BA go now. Ben can call the plays the last 3 games. I would think just about anyone could do a better job than BA and honestly at this point, who cares if it makes the offense worse if it allows us to beat someone to the punch and sign somebody like Weis, who I think would be great for the talent we have on offense.

by DarinS on Dec 13, 2009 5:06 PM EST up reply actions

I’d agree with you if Ben didn’t look more confused than anyone on the field Thursday. Having Ben call all the plays is entirely too much to put on his shoulders, especially considering the locker room tension and his concussion status.

The Hell that Tomlin & the Steelers have unleashed on me this December is indescribable.

by John Stephens on Dec 13, 2009 5:11 PM EST up reply actions

wonder if the concussion had an affect on his play

by shleeve on Dec 13, 2009 5:13 PM EST up reply actions

I can see where you are coming from

On Ben, I don’t think he has looked sharp since the 2nd half of the Denver game. OTOH, I still think it would be OK to fire BA now if there was a OC that is available now that we are interested in. This year is over with and honestly what ever we did couldn’t be much worse than BA was doing. I am sure a position coach could do as well. I also think it sends a message to the players that they better get their Sh-t together.

by DarinS on Dec 13, 2009 5:31 PM EST up reply actions

maybe see if Shanahan has any interest in being a OC rather than a HC…….doubt it but hey why not

by shleeve on Dec 13, 2009 5:35 PM EST up reply actions

what ever we did couldn’t be much worse than BA was doing

What if it is even worse? Then we would be going into next year with even more question marks. It just isn’t worth the gamble.

The Hell that Tomlin & the Steelers have unleashed on me this December is indescribable.

by John Stephens on Dec 13, 2009 5:41 PM EST up reply actions

If they do fire BA and hire someone else who is worse than BA

Then we have bigger problems than who our OC is. It would be one thing if the playoffs were still a realistic possibility, We may not technically be out of it but for all intense purposes we are. If we are truly going to make a change in OC’s I highly doubt that having someone else calling plays from the same system for the last three games will have any effect on next year what so ever. I think most are in agreement that BA in part of the problem and not part of the solution. I have no issue with you at all if you disagree with this but there is nothing that could convince me we wouldn’t be better off without BA tomorrow given our current situation.

by DarinS on Dec 13, 2009 6:37 PM EST up reply actions

Totally different situations

As the season is beginning and after it is all but over are to extremely different situations. I understand why some think we should keep him until the end of the year, you have every right to your opinion. I disagree and think we should get rid of the cancer now. Regardless of what happens the end result will be the same, no playoffs.

Arians – better be gone. I don’t care how much BB cries about it. I wouldn’t be shocked if Arians is still here next year, though. Crushed, pissed, yes. But not shocked.

by shleeve on Dec 13, 2009 5:15 PM EST up reply actions

DB Coach needs to go.

The DB’s have been a weak link all year. Ike has had a bad year. Gay has regressed (sucks), Clark and Carter have had breakdowns too many times to imagine. Mundy is a long way from being a Steeler safety. Where was Lewis and Burnett all year. If they are not ready, the buck stops with the position coach.

by Steeler Nation VA on Dec 14, 2009 8:27 AM EST up reply actions

Good call – he needs to go too. Worst Steelers CB play I’ve ever seen, and that’s saying something given all of the weak secondaries we’ve had over the years.

i agree IF he’s had a decent amount of control over the dbacks. if he’s just there to help out cuz the real coach also has other responsibilities then i’d say they maybe should give this “assistant” dback coach more responsibilities and not fire him….if that makes any sense.

Hell just anybody who doesnt call shotgun on 3rd and 1

All I ask is for a guy to run the ball until it stops working. When a dude opens his game with two carries for 9 yards, and then passes on 3rd and 1, he should be fired at that very moment. I literally would not permit somebody who did that to be on my team any longer.

Its just retarded. I’m so tired of the random calls, the good first halfs followed by vanilla 2nds, and the general disarray this offense is in. Despite having 2 SBMVPs, a 2 time SB winning QB, pro bowl running back and up and coming RB, and a vastly improved O-line this year, it is a shame how bad it looked.

Personnel absolutely

We didnt have Harrison on ST until the last couple weeks, and we havent allowed a TD since he got put back on the squad…

Russ Grimm...

Here are some pluses…

1)Quality control over the O-line, which would mean no matter who we get to Coach the position…You would have a HOF O-Linemen looking over your shoulder to making sure the line blocking schemes will always account for any possible free rushers!! That’s something Coach Larry Z has not or can not address.

2) Former Pitt Player!!

3) As I said before, will soon be a Hall of Famer

4) Track record…i live in AZ and know first hand that before the Bidwells sprung for bigger salaries for the Assistant Coaches, that the Cardinals O-line was in a 10 year funk!! just terrible!! …That is not the case anymore…EVEN WHEN THEY GO EMPTY SET!!

5) Carry over..he know the players because he Coached for the Steelers before.

6) The Rooney’s like him…So much so that he almost became our next HEAD COACH!!The Rooney’s know Coaches.

7) When he talks players listen! …I read during his stint with the Steelers he was so effective at getting players respect/attention Cowher gave him Asst/Head Coach title.

8) leads me to my next point…players like Ward and Big Ben are in some ways running the show…I believe Ward will listen to a FORMER PLAYER THAT IS GOING TO BE ENSHRINED IN THE HALL OF FAME! Even if you are a Big Ben you would respect a HALL of FAMER telling you …It’s time to pound the rock! Not the same as Coach Wiz saying it right??

So as I look at it closer it think Coach Grimm should get that call in February over Shanahan or Wiess…etc because he can address the O-line, play calling(pounding the rock), Big Ben’s ego and understands Pittsburgh’s Smash Mouth Football tradition…Also think about finding a great OC…But hiring another bad O-line Coach!? With a Grimm hire, you could kill many birds with one stone.

…Would anybody in Steelers Nation be upset if Coach Grimm got the call as our next OC?? …And why?? Let me know…I’m open for debate on this one guys…

i LOVE grimm as an oline/assistant heah coach but no to the OC

here’s what i posted in another comment:

let me start out by saying i loved Grimm when he was here. i think he’s a GREAT oline coach & assistant head coach. he probably would be very good as a higher up on a team involved with team & player management, practice, strategy, etc. but i really question his play calling ability along with his play designing ability.

since 2004, i think he’s gone for a fair number of HC or even OC jobs and has yet to get one. for ex: when he left pittsburgh with Weiz and went to cardinals in early ‘08, Weiz didnt pick him as the OC (which you’d think he would if he was a legit HC candidate). Weiz picked haley. you might figure that Weiz just ID’ed a great available OC and kept involved Grimm. basically a situation where haley was better than Grimm but Grimm was still good. so when haley left, Grimm gets the OC job, right? nope. Grimm became co-offensive coordinator (only in charge of the run) along with their wide receiver coach (who was only in charge of the pass), while Weiz did the play calling. and that WR coach (mike miller) has only been WR coach for 2 years. Miller’s coaching CV: he was the quality control officer for the steelers for 4 years & one year in buffalo, but then spent a couple years coaching at robert morris university & nfl europe. then was the WR coach of the cards.

unless that WR coach is some shining star on the rise, Grimm is isnt good with play calling. i would love to have him back as an assistant HC & line coach again tho.

Wait and see...

There will be lots of heads rolling after this season — we might find a former head coach who would make a better coordinator. Washington, Carolina and Chicago are likely to clean house. And if Dallas doesn’t make the playoffs, you know lots of pink slips will be flying down there.

by TURFgeek on Dec 13, 2009 9:33 PM EST reply actions

Just for fun...

For those of you who want a running-oriented team, here’s a name you might not have heard of: Chris Klenakis. He’s the offensive coordinator for the University of Nevada. The team doesn’t get the marquee recruits, but it has the number one rushing offense in the country. In fact, this year it became the first school in NCAA history to have three 1,000 yard rushers in the same season.

by TURFgeek on Dec 13, 2009 9:54 PM EST reply actions

One of them was the QB, Colin Kaepernick...

Isn’t that more of a spread the field, read option offense though? I haven’t seen a whole lot of them this year.

Why does anyone actually care if we have a run-oriented coordinator? Let’s get serious people, the days of the Bus are gone. In fact, the fact that they were gone while the Bus was here and the Steelers were still successful at it is what made him so great.

MT is a good head coach because he’s pragmatic. We have a franchise QB and loads of talent and speed at WR, not to mention a patchwork o-line that can’t open up holes against Cleveland’s D line. Tomlin’s not going to hire a coordinator because he’s married to a particular philosophical background. Let’s hope the (hopefully) new OC turns out to be of the same mindset. I don’t care if he figures out that the best way score TDs is fake punting ever drive; I just wish they would stop the current poor RZ, sack filled, only score within 2 min O.

by 16andCounting on Dec 13, 2009 10:32 PM EST reply actions

Why does anyone actually care if we have a run-oriented coordinator?

Cause That is Steelers football. And its obvious from Thursday Ben can’t take what he’s given and roll like Manning or Brady can. Plus if the OC is more run oriented the O-line improves, and we can run the ball out in the fourh quarter again.

running the ball successfully requires more than just determination, we were determined to run last year and we were the worst at in in the league. We are better at running the football this year on fewer attempts, sometimes that is connected.

To run the ball dominatingly you need a good RB and a great O-Line. We used to spend half our pick value on O-lineman and spent a bunch of our cap on them. That’s why we didn’t have a good QB or WR’s. We couldn’t afford them. Now we have good skill players and an average O-line. Running the ball all the time like we did with the Bus would be like switching to the 4-3 defense with our current players. It would make the situation worse, not better.

Fact of the matter is...

… the NFL as a whole has changed. The days of girth and ‘wall of flesh’ lines is over – except in Pittsburgh (and slow is usually a byproduct). The NFL is now ‘strength & speed". Granted this will take time to draft & build but if you don’t know what’s wrong, you’ll never start fixing it. I don’t think Tomlin (and definitely not Bruce) have figured this out. Until we can make-over the lines, we must use what we have. The Steelers must be innovative, clever, tricky and UNPREDICTABLE until the team is re-formed.

Innovative, clever, tricky and UNPREDICTABLE… did I just describe the OC know as Wizz?

Whichever way

If we get a run oriented, a 50-50 guy or a pass oriented guy, I just know this!

From a total entertaininment point of you cuz the football point of view is clear, he calls bad plays! Not only are they bad, they are boring, we are predictable, it’s just horrendous! Think about it guys, I assume we all watch a lot of games right? When I see other teams play, there is guaranteed one play in a game where I go, wow, great call by their OC, this happens numerous times even. Just now watching the Giants-Eagles I saw some damn good play calling.

With us? 13 games into the season? How many plays have any of you seen this year where you went wow, nice BA! There have been a few but if we are talking ratio?! 1 good play to every what… 10?! I’m sorry, I’m over BA, I’m done with him, the guy will find a job elsewhere, if the Steelers wanna be loyal to him or whatnot, put him as QB coach maybe, I like him as a QB coach he was afterall the first QB coach of Peyton. Maybe Arians can work with Ben on holding the ball too much, half the sacks on him this season are on him! As I said in a FanPost of mine, now Whisenhunt, that was a good OC, say whatever you like but he had some good good playcalling, there’s a reason he’s a head coach now

How many Baltimore Ravens does it take to win a Super Bowl? Nobody knows and we may never find out

oh and one more thing

Cowher saw something Tomlin didn’t and that’s never hire a Browns OC to your own OC, do what Cowher did, you like the guy, he has some talent maybe and you wanna bring him to a better franchise? Make him a WR coach! Not a OC

If Weis

if charlie weis does come here and improves the offense and we rack up alot more points dont you think he would then be look at for a head coaching position dont want a guy that around for a year or 2 then we’re right back to this point again. for that reason alone i dont want weiss

by playboy722 on Dec 14, 2009 12:54 AM EST reply actions

dont get me wrong this could happen with any oc but charlie was a big name oc he’s out faster than you can blink shanahan also

by playboy722 on Dec 14, 2009 12:56 AM EST reply actions

Honestly

I don’t need a run oriented offense to be happy. This team has ALL the weapons to run a West Coast style offense, and I will continue to endorse that with the players they have.

Gary Kubiak would be good. I would really be impressed if Mike Shanahan came here. Hell, Steve Mariucci isn’t doing anything… I remember his playcalling in SF was pretty decent. Charlie Weis would be fine by me too.

Can’t see Grimm. He was really upset with his treatment here at the end.

What about Mark Whipple? He knows Ben and has done a good job for the Hurricanes.

by dermonti09 on Dec 14, 2009 6:47 AM EST reply actions

There is plenty of time for the Steelers to get their pick of OC, OL, ST & DB coaches since we are not going to go to the big dance. I want a OC who truely belives in running the ball. A balanced attack is fine, but in December when it is 10degrees, run the ball 22 time out of 62 offensive plays. only 22 runs while ben gets sacked 8 times.

Those that want Shannahan and others from the West Coast offense, need to know that that would set the offense and Ben back 2 years till they grasp the concept and terminology. I do not want to go to a west coast offense.

Lets see who is out there in 3 weeks.

I will post this elsewhere too

but two people I see as good chices for OC and ST coach are:

OC: Aaron Kromer O-Line Coach Saints

ST: Marty Galbraith Asst. Speail Teams Titans

I forgot some letters in this...

Ironically the two letters missing are “o” and “c” and I reversed the letters “a” and “i” making it spell ail. I did not do that on purpose either.

another rumor of staff changes...

steelers may lose colbert & their contracts lawyer if cowher comes back to coach another team. now that would be a BAD change

by t1mmy10 on Dec 14, 2009 8:04 PM EST reply actions

What?

Were did this news come from? Please say this is a 7 month early April Fools joke. Losing Colbert would be one of the worst things that could happen to this team. He does a wail of a job with the draft, scouting, and FA. This maybe a bit of an exaggeration, but losing him would be like ripping the heart out of this team. Guy is a lifeblood finding the players for our system.

Could you please post the link to this rumor? Thanks!

I hope Ed is right. Can’t lose Colbert. That would be a sad, sad day for the organizations.
