Do these Steelers deserve our support right now?

The Steelers have the best fans in sports.  They make a great effort to travel and have surpassed any other NFL team in their ability to demonstrate loyalty and passion.  I do not see this level of commitment from the players on the team, not now.  Notable exceptions are Ward, Holmes and Mendenhall on offense and Woodley and Keisel on defense.  Big Ben?  Not sure what is going through his head right now.

I don't post much and I know this statement is blasphemous but hear me out.  From what I have seen lately and especially on Thursday, the Steelers as a team have given up.  Clearly, many of these guys are going through the motions, notably on defense.  The worst of whom I believe are:  Timmons, Taylor, and Townsend.  Farrior looks awful but maybe that's all he has left.  If you really watched Ike Taylor this game, you would have seen a guy waiting for the game to be over before it even started.  He should have been pulled in my humble opinion.

BA had perhaps his worst day ever.  The offense looks worse than ever.  The combination of a poor O Line, BA's inability to create a flow to the offense and the reemergence of Roethlisbungle made them look pathetic and lost at the same time.  The money they invested in Starks and Kemoeatu may really come back to haunt them.  Their offense has been built from the outside-in.  That is going to be hard to change any time soon.

Poor special teams play is exemplary of this lack of effort.  I have stated before that the woes on ST may have been caused by the fact that too many players do not want to play on specials.  Now, I am convinced of it.  The Steelers have succumbed to the prima donna syndrome - I, me, mineinstead of we, us and team.

They won the SuperBowl, now the rats are jumping ship when things are getting tough.  The level of effort and passion are not there.  They are not acting like professionals now that their playoff hopes have been dashed.  They stopped believing in their ability to win another title, so now they have a bunch of guys mailing it in.  You can imagine thoughts like - "Hey, I'm not going to get hurt for nothing..." and "  ... "It's not my fault"  uttered in private.

I can take losing, I can't take a lack of effort.  I need to see something different but it's not lkely this year.  I am really concerned that Tomlin has lost his team.

I assume you are a diehard fan, so I wont trash you.

But this isnt a serious post. They always deserve our support. This team won 15 in a row when I was dying in a hospital room. I survived something after people had given up hope for me. They didnt quit. I wont quit.

Fun story about that. Brett Keisel wrote me a card when I was in the hospital (my cousin told him about my story) and he signed an autograph. Brett was still a backup at the time, but he was one of my favorite players. He had a motor, and I believed given the chance he would be a huge stud. I met him a couple years ago at training camp and told him who I was, just wishing to thank him for what he did for me. He remembered writing the letter, years later, and grabbed me in a big bear hug, crushing me (Im 6’4", 265). If we give up on them, shame on us.

Go Steelers!

ps Jeff Reed’s sister is really cool and down to earth. If he ever decides to punch another bathroom up, she could be our kicker (apparently according to him and her, she used to kick his ass at field goal competitions).

by nycsteelerfan on Dec 13, 2009 10:18 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Absolutely, but let me add something

I will never waver, even if we go 0-16. It just won’t happen. I dont work that way. A true fan doesn’t…

However, I also believe our effort should be somewhat relative to the effort being put in by the team. And I feel that their effort over the last couple weeks has just been atrocious. In particular in the KC, Oakland, and Browns game. The team seemed to lose hope when Troy went down again, and seemed to really lose steam. And I think they’ve realized they cant win without him, and have thrown in the terrible towel.

And that makes me feel reluctant to be the same hatin’ stankin’ fan I was a month ago.

by Mechem on Dec 13, 2009 10:30 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Yes, and ....

I disagree with your view of the effort the players are giving. They may be tight, frustrated, confused, …. you ever try as hard as you can, you fight to find your focus, you grit your teeth, and go in with every fiber…… and it happens, again. Now you don’t know why anymore, you’re doing things you don’t normally do trying to fix the problem. You start correcting things that don’t need correcting just because you don’t know what else to do and as a result you just make it worse.

That’s where I think these guys are. I don’t question their effort. And I am a Steeler for life. We got three more games before that long off season drudgery (arguing about who makes the practice squad, et al) and I’m going to savor every minute of these last three games.

Was Black and Gold, am Black and Gold, will be Black and Gold

Heck if I was a fan when we lost the AFC title game to the Chargers, watched Kordell get washed up and “embraced” Tommy Maddox as our QB, then I think I have earned dawning the Black and Gold

A proud fan since 1992, I was 8 then, my uncle was a major 49niners fan and he’d watch games on Sunday. One day I sat with him loved the American Football right away, he gave me the ins and outs of the sport (from what I could comprehend at that age) and being from the Carribean the closest team was the Dolphins, but, being 8 and all, I just liked the Steelers colors, the uniforms etc. So I decided to stick with them.

Jump to 1995, by now I understood the sport well and became a major fan! Was lucky to see them make the SB in 1996, and stayed a true fan for 10 years when they won it in 2006! It’s been a long time coming!!!

Yes, Forever and Always

Just got to question why someone would even think about giving up on the team. Why wouldn’t you support them? This maybe condesending, but to consider giving up on the team is ludacris, true fans do not do that. How many times have we gone through a crappy week only to watch the Steeler’s come out and pick our spirits up with a victory. I can only wish I lived close enough to Pittsburgh to go to one of their remaining games and cheer away. We already got a story from a poster about getting a lift when he was hospitalized from the Steeler’s and I am sure there are many more out there.

Yes, some of the players may have seemed to give up, but we don’t on them. There are more players still working their asses off to win games than we see players giving up. To address your Starks and Kemo comments. I think we we’ll be very happy by signing them. Kemo is one of the best pulling guards in the league already and it is his second or third year starting. Look at how many games Starks has shut down the oppossing rusher, Allen, Dumervill, Odom to name a few. To say the O-Line is pathetic as some people have said is crazy. They have played very well with the exception of a few games. Giants were said to have the best O-Line coming into the year and they got rocked a few games.

Gonna say if you want to give up give up, but don’t call yourself a fan. True fans stick with the team through thick and thin no matter what.

If you're going to give up now

There’s a team in Cincinnati that could use your support. You fit their fan profile just fine.

by StoneColdSteel on Dec 14, 2009 12:22 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Huh?

A bad season does not equate to not supporting the Steelers. Are there reasons to be critical of, sure there are but to stop supporting them should be an insane idea to anyone who is a true fan of the team. I have loved and supported this team for over 30 years and have no intention of ever stopping. As disappointing as this year has been, I believe this team has a bright future, they are but a few adjustments away from being a SB contender again.

by DarinS on Dec 14, 2009 1:18 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Short answer ...

is that this question just doesn’t need to be asked. Of course those men deserve our continued support. The other stuff about men giving up is so much clap trap that it is ludicrous.

by tenthmtnman on Dec 14, 2009 7:25 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Are you perfect?

If you are then you have a right to not support them. After all, that would mean you always get it right. That would mean you are always mentally and physically capable to achieve 100% of your ability. That would mean you aren’t human. If you are human you need to make up your mind and support your team or become something that Steeler Nation doesn’t like….a bandwagon, sunny day follower. If that is what you are then you don’t get to be called a fan. There aren’t too many people that know exactly what is going on in the locker room and in the heads of the players and coaches. All I know is MY team is not doing well, but I don’t just drop them because of that.

This is in no way pointing a finger because that would put another twist in the irony of this comment, but I am saying “are you in or out?”

I'll answer this two ways

If you are not a fan of the Steelers then no they don’t deserve your support.

If you are a fan of the Steelers then yes they deserver your support.

I think it’s rather simple.

Steelers football is 60 mins.

by tannofsteel84 on Dec 14, 2009 10:09 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Don't misunderstand my point please...

To be clear, I am a Steelers fan since my birth in the city of Pittsburgh. I will never root for another NFL team. I attended games in old Three Rivers Stadium in the 70s and watched the Steelers win their first 4 SuperBowls after the team was horrible for many years. I’m a football guy, have coached for 25 years and have great passion for the game.

My point was this – the Steelers are testing my passion as a fan. The term ‘Fan’ stems from the word Fanatic. A Fanatic makes total effort toward his goal. As Mechem expressed above – the effort level of the players recently has been shocking. How can the fans be more passionate about the game than the players themselves? I’m not condemning all of the players, but enough of them are playing poorly enough to make the whole look really bad.

Hines Ward sat on the bench and cried after the Cleveland game. I don’t think his tears are in response to losing per se. He sees that his team is not the same team as just one season ago. There is something missing. I don’t say this with any pleasure. The Steelers do not look like the Steelers I have watched my entire life. I hope they turn it around. Roster changes were going to be needed anyway. Now, it looks like more changes are needed than we ever thought.

You deserve their best effort. When they give that effort, they deserve all of our support and affection. I’m just not seeing it right now.

I see bad execution

but I fail to see what some people are seeing. I don’t see anyone giving up. I don’t see anyone not giving an effort. There is a difference between bad execution and giving up. You can play hard and do the wrong thing. Confusion caused by changes brought on for various reasons can also cause you to seem a little lethargic. This team is just making bad plays (or naot making plays) at the wrong moment. I see frustration. Tell me how well you perform when you are frustrated.

I’m just baffled that anyone after their team winning a Super Bowl and only 10 months later would be ready to pull their support. Maybe I’m wrong, but I still support them. Even Willie Gay is putting forth an effort. Just because he gets burnt doesn’t mean he’s not trying. Ben is getting sacked, but at least he’s giving it all he’s got. Making dumb mistakes while trying to make thinsg happen doesn’t mean lack of effort.

Sorry I’m not faulting you for anything. I’m just telling you how I see it.

Saved Your Seat

Don’t worry Franz. I saved your seat on the bandwagon as I knew you weren’t leaving, only stretching your legs. We all feel your frustration.
I think Hines was crying because he hates to lose. I don’t think he was thinking about “the way we were” as a team. I think he wanted to win so bad and lost…again. That taste in your mouth sucks…

It certainly does

How these guys respond the next 3 games is going to be interesting, hopefully not heart-breaking. A good number of them are auditioning for a job next year, here or elsewhere.

Someone made the point in a different post about the age of the starters and significant back-ups on defense. Thirty-something for a lot of them. They are not doing themselves any favors to this point.

Hines is frustrated. I’m sure most of our team is. Maybe even desperate, which does not always translate into good play. They will work through it, hopefully sooner rather than later.

Come on 1 bad year. it is not like we are Browns fans or Redskin fans, let alone a God forbid member of Raider Nation, with no hope of winning. We had a bad year. Next year we will have some new assistant coaches and a qualified OC, some new players to fill wholes, and more focus on the fundementals of football (tackling, catching, following assignments, etc.). Will we go the the SB next year, do not know? But I know I won’t miss any of the action.

What made me the Saddest...

… When I saw Hines, without a smile (and at times actually upset and scowling). I can honestly say, whether he drops a pass, misses a block, looses the battle to a CB or runs a poor route… he always smiles at least a “My Bad”/“Guess You Saw That”/“You Caught Me There” big wide grin – - then he gives it 150% on the next play (and usually makes an unbelievable catch or a block that makes Troy say, “Glad that wasn’t me he hit”). I’m sure that really eases tension and helps pick-up the O-Team spirit. When Hines lost that, you know things are in the pooper. Did anyone notice he was looking to the sidelines a lot during that scowling?

GIVE UP ON THE BLACK & GOLD… HELL NO !!
GIVE UP ON THE CONFUSED & UNDIRECTED OR UNPROVEN… HELL NO !!
Give up on some lazy, phone-it-in, ’where’s my next contract’ players (and coaches)… damn right !!!
My message to those guys is simple, “Walk south into the Ohio River until your helmet floats”.
There’s a lot more guys (maybe girls too) out there like Harrison was, if given a chance, who would be proud to wear the Black & Gold and earn the right to do so.

That is precisely what I am saying. I’ve been around the game long enough to see it believe me. Tomlin has some work to do between now and next season. They have too much talent on offense (even with the OL being mediocre) to put up such little numbers on the scoreboard. Defensively, we need a youth movement and some better cover guys in the secondary – however they can get them.

Nope, can’t do that! I have been a fan for far too long! I’ve worn my jersey or t-shirt or coat after bad games and bad seasons and heard all the comments that make me want to snap on bandwagon fans. I’ve sat in my living room and yelled at the television like the players were actually going to hear me. I’ve jumped for joy after great games and ignored phone calls after bad ones. It’s all just part of being a true fan. Yes, in my house my son is jokingly grounded after any loss. Yes, when we’ve had bad games and my husband or I has said "hmmm maybe I’ll just rout for the * " there have been jokes about divorcing the “bandwagon” fan. Its just the normal progression of the fans when they truly support their team. However, the sun sets and then rises again, and we are right back in our Steelers clothes…getting ready for the day in our bathroom decorated in Steelers fashion…preparing to answer all the comments coming with the standard responses after a bad game/season. So, that’s just how it goes. I agree with hollywood…I can’t wait to see the smile return to the face of Ward. Good day or bad day that smile makes my day! Welcom back Franz! Glad you stretched your legs and sat back down. We all need to do that sometimes.

like someone doin a spoof on how cowboy fans are… Never would I have thought to see something like this here. Very disappointed in whoever posted this. Borderline irked, but I guess bandwagoners after 25 years?? come in all shapes, sizes, and team colors. I mean, I could definitely expand on this, but how do you contemplate giving up on a team after a bad year one year removed from winning the superbowl??? They had 2 this decade, and a lot of those same players are still on the team! What more do you want?

My roommate had plenty of jokes for me after the Cleveland lost, but even he knew enough to say, “at least you’re not a seahawks fan…” Smh

You didn't read what I wrote

I never mentioned losing. I’m talking about effort and passion and desire. If you think the Steelers as a team are playing as hard as they can, down in and down out, you are not watching the game with both eyes open.

Football requires an all-out effort by everyone on every play. Without that, you have zero chance of winning the down, much less winning the game. I am talking about our passion and dedication as fans versus their passion and effort as players. One begets the other. Are you telling me you would support a team only because of the name on their jersey, regardless of anything else?
