Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Could this be true? BA gone for real?

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/307907-breaking-news-coaching-changes-coming-for-pittsburgh-steelers?utm_source=newsletter

I'm not sure how reliable the source is but the silver lining to this season would be a our OC and line coach and special teams getting canned.  The guy quotes Adam Schefter of Espn who from my understanding is a reliable source.  If this is true then it may have been worth a whole season lost.

For those of you who blame tomlin for waiting so long, I don't.  After year one ben set TD franchise records.  Year 2 they won the super bowl.  Its kinda hard to fire your OC after that.  But when you go 6-7 and staring 6-10 dead in the face with 4 first round draft picks on this offense who are far from bust there is no reason for the steelers scoring less than 21 points a game.  Also remember Tomlin is a defensive guy, he was DC for the Vikings and a Secondary coach for the bucs.  I'm pretty sure he has trusted BA but the results aren't there and he has to do the head coach thing.  Its about time and they need to score on the next hiring.  Mike Shananahan anyone? I know its a pipe dream but don't piss on my parade.

If this does happen I will rub it in the face of my father who tells me I shouldn't question Bruce Arians because he knows more about football since he coaches in the NFL..... I beg to differ.

Thanks

It always turns into a heated argument with pops. He blames everything on losing Troy P. But if you are losing 3 points for most games then a little bit of offensive production couldn’t hurt either.

Well, it IS troy's fault we are losing

Technically Troy’s absence is why we are losing. This is no question…

But a little offensive production wouldnt hurt.

Still, if we put up 24, the other team does 27, if we put up 20, they do 23. Troy’s that difference. We’ve lost with a variety of offensive productions.

schefter doesn't know anything more than any of us

At least on this one.

Firing Arians is tomlin’s call. You really think he’d announce that to anyone?

No, Schefter is just reading the writing on the wall.

by syrsteelerfan on Dec 14, 2009 5:16 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not even optimistic

If Mike Tomlin made decisions similar to how I make decisions the Rooney’s would have hired me.

Tomlin takes a much longer view on things, and if he sees a way to get back to winning ways with BA on board he’d do that. If he sees his chances of winning being better without BA than he goes. But I would be surprised if BA goes. I think Tomlin changes some of the situational playcalling tendencies, but that’s as far as it goes.

HA

Mike Shanahan is not going to be taking any OC jobs from anyone. I’m sure everybody would agree with me that he’d rather retire than take a demotion to OC for a team.

by retribution990 on Dec 14, 2009 6:13 PM EST reply actions

Probably not but...?

If he doesn’t get any HC offers from a team he is interested in, it’s possible if unlikely that he would go for an OC job. He doesn’t strike me as a college HC. I would love to see Shanny as the Stillers OC, the only bad thing would be a short tenure. He would change everything and sometimes that means growing pains but it would be a great year or two until he gets back as a HC somewhere.

He had a lot to say about play selection as a HC and was one of the best play-callers in the NFL for a lot of years. I always loved his Go For The Throat play-calling when his team starts getting Big Mo’ on it’s side. BB could get behind a choice like that. Too bad it is so unlikely.

Tomlin has got to do something

After a stinker of a season, heads must roll. Given that our special-teams coverage has been record-setting (in a bad way), ST coach Ligashesky is an obvious choice to take the fall. The question is whether Tomlin will use this opportunity to upgrade any of his other coaches. I agree with Varmint that it would make sense to put out some feelers as to who could take the OC position before canning Arians. If we can get someone better, go for it. Otherwise, it makes sense to stick with continuity.

by Hollywood Steel on Dec 15, 2009 5:37 AM EST up reply actions

Arians may know more about football than the combined heads of each and every BTSC’er. But I don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know that when a rocket explodes on a launch pad, something isn’t working. The offense has not been a disaster of that proportion until recently, but it also has rarely appeared to utilize all of its components effectively and it certainly has failed to score with the regularity that it should considering the talent it possesses.

Some may disagree

But I still think Weis would be the perfect fit. We have the talent to run the type of offense he did in NE with a little more run emphasis. I know there have been concerns that he wouldn’t be here very long and that may be true but after his debacle at ND, I don’t think major schools will be lining up HC jobs for him.

Ben improvised for most of that last drive.

If you can really point to any area though, our defense won that ring for us. Sure they gave up a couple of TD’s in that 4th quarter, but they put us in that position earlier in the game, and the whole season. (Dallas, San Diego 1st time, Baltimore all 3 times, the 1st Browns game=all games where the offense did nothing, and the D saved us)

Some guys to consider

Bobby April, Buffalo Bills Special Teams Coach – the Bills special teams unit has been ranked number 1 in the NFL three out of the past five years. Might make sense to give him a look considering Buffalo might blow that team up and start over. And if next year is uncapped, they won’t be able to sign anyone so April might be looking for a way out of another dreadful season.

Jack Bicknell Jr., Giants Asst. O-line – the Giants have had one of the best units in the NFL for a couple of years now. Bicknell is in his first season coming over from Boston College. BC has had a good history of producing good pro linemen.

Jim Hueber, Vikings Asst. O-line – he has been coaching for 35 years, mostly at the collegiate level. His units at Wisconsin and Minnesota were more than successful at producing 1,000 yard rushers.

Bob Bostad, O-line coach at Wisconsin,
Dan Sharp, Special teams & Tight ends coach at TCU
Mark Whipple, Off. coordinator at Miami
Norm Chow, off. coordinator at UCLA

It's just rumors

Shefter and Chris Mortenson are hacks. They are the sports equivelants of the National Enquirer or TMZ. They look for any rumor to spread, making up their own as well, to stay in the limelight.

Mortenson created the whole ‘Vick is a good fit for Pittsburgh’ thing. Now he’s saying Kevin Colbert is leaving Pittsburgh to work for Cowher again.

BA’s offense makes sense in the south or in a dome, not on frozen turf. The OL coach is too stupid to know NOT to send pron on a company computer, and the special teams coach needs to be an expert motiviator, and I guess he’s not.

by skyeandangus on Dec 15, 2009 11:02 AM EST reply actions

Nonsense even in outer space

Running a play with an empty backfield on three of your first four third downs does not make sense anywhere. The empty backfield only works if it surprises the defense. Rob Ryan obviously knows math so the predictable empty backfield did not work:

If it’s a pass, there will only be three guys (at most) on either side of the line to block, and this is if everyone reads the blitz right and slides that way (C, G, T). So blitz three or more defenders from one side. Worst case, O line plays it perfect and you have your guys in one on one pass rushing matchups. If the O line doesn’t play it perfect, someone is running free.

by CarlWeathersMustache on Dec 15, 2009 2:57 PM EST up reply actions

By the way

I shouldn’t have wrote “if” it’s a pass. Empty backfield with a franchise QB that has a history of head injuries means pass every single time.
