A trip behind the steel curtain one fans view on the role of sports in life
This is my final paper that I asked for other peoples stories unfortunately I didn't really have time to get stories becasue the thread in which I asked for stories didn't stay up very long. I hope you like it
When I look back at my life some of my favorite memories have happened during my time as a baseball player, family get to togethers or watching Pittsburgh Steelers games. As a fan of the Steelers or any sports team there are ups and downs, building of relationship sometimes relationships are destroyed because of a person love of a team and the other person just doesn’t get it, luckily I don’t have that problem but many people do. Also sometimes a sports team gives people hope like what happened in Pittsburgh when the steel mills closed in the mid- to late-70s or when the Aluminum Plant closed down in my Home town of Ravenswood and the basketball team won a state championship.
Some times as a fan your team will encounter a rough patch and it may cause you to act out of frustration. During this period of time it is best if you don’t go around people who are fans of other teams who will make fun of you because your team is not as good as normal because it will cause you to say and do things that you wouldn’t normally do like yell and curse at your friends. Also this period could be linked to games with close games that could cause some people to have hart attacks, throw stuff, normally remotes, break TVs, swear loudly at nothing or yell at the TV loudly any could happen.
Now the way sports teams build relationships is by letting you find people with a common interest, wither it be blogs, or going to games in person you find people that have a shared interest giving you something to build off of going into the future. How they destroy relationships is the fact that sometimes you meet the right person they’re into 99% of the same stuff you’re in to except sports and sometime it is reconcile sometime it is not. One example of actions that could destroy a relationship is what I have found at the Steelers blog I‘m a member of where the man who wrote it was doing cartwheels after a win and accidentally kick his son in the face, now luckily his son was ok and he and his wife are still together somehow.
During hard times that hit cities, most people turn to religion or vices such as alcohol, but some people turn to sports. The city of Pittsburgh was hit with the closure of the economic back bone of the city, its Steel factories at the same time that the Steelers started to get good and it became a matter of civic pride for the city. The people of Pittsburgh were like we may be down but our team is the best in the NFL. The same happened to my hometown of Ravenswood, West Virginia about this time last year when one of the biggest employers shut down and 500 people lost their job. About that time the high school basketball team was starting its season and as we started to realize that we would be without those jobs for some time the boys and girls’ basketball team was going to the state tournament. The girls’ team lost in the semi-finals to the eventual state champions, but the next week the boys started playing in the boys’ tournament. After a close call an overtime heart stopper and one of the Best State Championship games in recent history we won the tournament and allowed our city to have some pride about itself. Much like the city of Pittsburgh we were facing hard time but our teams were able to allow the residents to have some pride about them.
As you can see sports teams have many effects on people, wither it builds relationships gives you a sense of community, a trip to the hospital or allows you to have a sense of pride about your city sports team mean many things to many people.

I wish I could still have 1 page paper assignments and write on topics like this.
Football is life. Just that simple.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
You could do a biology paper on Uni-brow:the missing link in facial hair evolution

hope you didn't take offense from me
none was intended. I actually wanted to be able to provide you with some feedback for the paper. All my best stories wouldn’t have been appropriate.

Don't think he was mocking you
Not sure if you are in high school or college or what year you are. Nor do I know Malor’s education level. Really none of my business. But, come college time papers are no longer one pagers, at least where I have been. Just think that is all he was getting at. Speaking from being in college for four years. Keep writing though man, always good to get thoughts out onto paper and share it with others, unless it’s real personal.
Freshman at a little commuter college
its the highest level of the remedial english classes and it was way to easy for me. as an example thi stook me about 30 minutes to write and it was my final

I Love the idea here.
This is a great topic WVP and I appreciate your personal insight . Many of my favorite and not so favorite memories involve my beloved Steelers. It was one of the few connections I had with my father after my parents divorced when I was young….he took me to my first Steelers game at the old Cleveland Municipal Stadium and got pretty red with an “usher” that decided to stand in front of me completely blocking my view! It was one of the good memories in an otherwise strange and dysfucntional situation. Oh, and we lost that game to the Stains. My stepfather was a Browns fan….that just made matters worse, he was a dufus anyway…AND a Browns fan. What was my mother thinking? He died in ‘87 when I was a junior in high school…never having seen the Browns win a Super Bowl. On some level I feel bad…but not really. Now, years later, my middle son, wife and daughter are all die hard fans like me. My oldest son was dropped often as a small child and chose to root for that team from Texas (who shall remain nameless, but who’s quarterback rhymes with homo). We coexist peacefully only becasue they can’t win in December. If they were good, he would be living on the back porch. But seriously, Sundays during football season are great family times. My wife gets annoyed becasue ALL progress stops and our weekend schedule revolves around gametime…but that’s how it is when you are a FAN! I love it, even though we are going through a rough patch right now, we commiserate together and remember better days!
"Whaddya' mean all the beer is gone..?
Very true indeed
People from other cities think Steeler Nation is some kind of crazy aberration. But in reality, what motivates Steeler fans is exactly what you said: overcoming hard times; even when you need to leave your hometown to survive.
That’s why supporting the Steelers is such a personal issue for many of us. Year after year, the Steelers achieve on the gridiron what many native Pittsburghers have been doing for our entire lives. We fight back and hang in there to win another day—even when the odds are stacked against us.
It’s our shared history that makes being a Steeler fan so unique and special.
I think thats kinda of why I started rooting for the Steelers
I live in a blue collar town and the steelers are a blue collar team that just gets the job done wither its a blow out win or a ugly win the Steelers reperesent that kind of work man like mentallity. Also Jerome is one of my heros, a man that large should not run like he did when he first came in the leauge, and I also grew up watching him just run guys over

They don't understand
Had a client come into my office week 1 when we were playing the Titans. She was wearing everything Steelers. Hat, jeans, shoes, shirt, jewelry. My boss is accustomed to seeing my Steeler wardrobe, but she honestly thought it was “just me” and I was one of those silly fans. My boss (not one to ever keep her mouth shut) made a rather negative comment about “crazy” fans~ the client looked at me and shook her head “These people just don’t get it.” Well no, they really don’t. Just wait till I unleash my new Steeler scrubs… oh they’re beeeautiful.
Imagine you’re the Steelers and have the luxury of knowing that thousands of loud, supportive, Towel Wavin’ fans will be at your next road game…and the next…and the next etc. Now that’s something to be proud of. I think they are, too.
When the tailgate drops, the BS stops. Shut up and play!
Steeler scrubs
I’m jealous
