Packer fan in the house
Hello Steeler fans. This is my very first post on any site, but became interested in sharing perspectives on each others' team. Just as one of your members decided to extend an olive branch to our site, I decided to do the same on your site. I am here for any questions you have on the Green Bay Packers before our intriguing matchup this Sunday. I will try to answer them as quicly as possible. Thanks!

Thanks Jabooty...
Hope none of the regular Q&A guys mind, I went over to Acme Packing Company a little early. I had to just move on from last week ASAP. Head over and join me, if you like, I could use some added perspectives.
If we were going to try and exploit one weakness, offensively and defensively, of your team, what would that weakness be? Who should we be most concerned with defensively? (Because I am down right worried about JerMichael Finley’s athletic ability and size going downfield from that TE/ slot spot.)
'I’ve learned to become a flat-liner. There’s a lot out there that’ll make your heart jump if you allow it."

Thanks for starting it up
I can’t say that there is any way to shut down Green Bay’s Wide Receivers. Looking back at the beginning of this year, Rodgers struggled to get the ball to them with the pocket collapsing around him. Green Bay’s biggest flaws are poor Special Teams play and lack of discipline. If I were Pittsburgh, I would disguise heavy blitz packages often just to confuse our shaky Offensive Line. Our OL has performed better in recent weeks, but don’t be deceived because we adjusted the majority of our play calls to short passing routes to get the ball out of Rodgers hands more frequently. If you fans make some noice and force Green Bay to go offsides or even get holding penalties on your blitz packages, we will struggle. Green Bay’s offense has a habit of shooting themselves in the foot with penalties. I will say this, Green Bay quite often gets into 3rd and short situations and they convert more than any other team in those situations. However, on the flip side, they get themselves into a lot of 3rd and 15 situations resulting in a stalled drive.
As for our Special Teams, there is nothing special about this group. Kicker Mason Crosby is kicking 1 for 5 from 50+, and it isn’t any more impressive from 40+. He has struggled mightily. It’s not that he doesn’t have the leg, because he is capable of kicking it from 60 yards. He has had issues getting the ball between the posts. Our punter Kapinos struggles to pin opponents inside the 20. Last but not least, our coverage units on punts and kickoffs are the worst in the NFL. We lost to Minnesota the second time and to Tampa Bay stricly because of our Special Teams struggles. When MN played us @ Lambeau, their average starting position was at the 46 yard line. That’s how bad our Special Teams unit is.
As far as our defense, they are good. However, they have a habit of giving up more TD’s than FG’s. Since Al Harris went on IR, we lack depth at our CB position. Charles Woodson is shutdown, don’t throw it to him (why am i saying that?), Tramon Williams is our upcoming starter, he is reliable and is good, but struggled against Baltimore. After Tramon, we don’t have anybody. That is our defense’s biggest weakness.
I think offensively our biggest weakness is our o-line. As you have probably heard at some point this season, Rodgers has been sacked a lot. They’ve been a little better since the return of our starting RT from last year, Mark Tauscher, but I still think the o-line is a tiny bit above average at best. They can actually be surprisingly good at run blocking at times but I don’t expect Grant to do anything on the ground against you guys.
Honestly, I’m not sure what our weakness would be defensively. If I had to say something I guess it would be our pass defense, and particulary our redzone pass defense. A lot of our struggles in our secondary seem to be more a result of our front seven not generating pressure, as opposed to just poor coverage. Woodson usually absolutely shuts down whoever he covers, and Tramon Williams has struggled with some PI calls (as some of you may have seen on MNF in our game against the Ravens), but overall he has been pretty good and realistically probably better then Harris had been for us until he tore his ACL.
Without a doubt though our biggest weakness is our special teams. Our punter is horrid, our kicker has struggled with FG’s pretty much all year, and our kickoff coverage is despicable to the point that some of us wonder whether or not we even practice special teams during the week. The STs unit is usually good for one big kickoff return, and unfortunately it usually comes at the worst possible time it could.
Finley is a beast. He has WR type speed, with a TE type body. I personally think he’s a lot like Vernon Davis or Antonio Gates. I don’t think he’s at the level of Gates but from what he’s showed us this year it looks like he could eventually get there. He was out with an injury for a few games this year but since he has come back he’s been very involved in our offensive gameplans, and has been really successful these past 2 games.
Who do you guys think will cover him? I would assume Polamalu would be on him if he played but from what I’ve heard it sounds like he isn’t going to play. Correct?

How can we stop your WR's?
It seems that Aaron is getting hot. Our secondary is bad. Although Troy will be back do you think we can stop Jennings and Driver? Has any team really shut them down this season?
I don't care about the Chargers. I'll blow my damn whistle whenever I damn feel like it. Every time I blow my damn whistle, your mother blows me.
by Hochuli loves Broccoli on Dec 15, 2009 1:09 PM EST reply actions
As I indicated in my previous comment, you have rattle up our Offensive Line. Greg Jennings has struggled this year, but he still is good. Driver is our go to guy. Finley is our big target. James Jones is a very good backup WR and he’s reliable. Jordy Nelson is a white man’s version of Hines Ward. lol.
So, Pittsburgh won’t be able to cover them too long. I can assure you of that. Your best option is to rattle up our OL and Rodgers. Force our OL to commit penalties, and you will win. Our OL is the NFL’s leader in penalties. We love to commit 10+ penalties a game. If you can get us into 3rd and 15 situations frequently, you will win. Of course that’s obvious, but it is an ongoing issue in Green Bay.
Dang
I watched the last game where you guys tied the second place record for most penalty yards in a game. Ouch. Any room for stinky toes Willie Colon on your team? I think he’d be a great fit. ;)

This game is going to be ugly
This will be the first time I’ve picked the Steelers to lose all year, and probably the first time since playing the Pats in 2007.
If there is a fear, any fear, that you have about the Steelers, what is it? Is your line still allowing people to get to Rodgers a lot? I just don’t see any possible way for the Steelers to win Sunday.
The Hell that Tomlin & the Steelers have unleashed on me this December is indescribable.
The Packers fears nothing about us!
How many in a row have we dropped. How many of those were shit ass teams? I’m not buying into the any given Sunday to placate the fans either! That’s BS!! Green Bay has a W penciled in on their schedule, and right they should. Sorry. We are just that bad this year! It’s certainly a painful thing to watch.

Believe it or not, yes
Lets face it, you guys are the defending Super Bowl champs and we’re playing in your house. Although we are hot, we can lose at any given Sunday. You guys love to spread the field on offense, and we don’t know if we can keep up considering our lack of depth at the CB position.
A lot of their sacks
come after Rodgers has the ball for 4 or 5 seconds. Their O-line is mediocre not bad.
sounds familiar

Not quite true actually
After the Bucs game, I saw the stat sheet for all his sacks. At the time, he was sacked 37 times. 28 of those sacks were in 3 seconds or less. It was a link from ESPN. Since that game though, the number of sacks have reduced.
Yep
I saw that article as well. He does hold onto the ball too long at times but it’s a misconception that nearly all of his sacks have come from him holding onto the ball too long.

Not really
The o-line is expected to block for the Qb for at least 3 seconds, and his 28 of 37 sacks came in under 3 seconds.
Having 9 sacks with more time than that is a lot.
He holds onto the ball in hopes of something opening up. Obviously this isn’t the smartest thing to do when your o-line is playing horrendous. But with a healthy Clifton and the return of Tauscher our o-line has been much better and Rodgers trying to make something happen has worked much better.
by packallday555 on Dec 19, 2009 1:51 AM EST up reply actions
Haha
yeah, really. Three seconds is a long time. Of course he’s waiting for someone to be wide open. There are more difficult throws that could be made earlier. Regardless, things like double pumping and running around in the end zone are stupid.
The O-line was never that bad. Clifton will never be healthy again. The line improved when Teddy’s choices got injured and he was forced to use Wells and Tauscher.
Again, the o-line is expected to be able to block for a Qb for at least 3 seconds. Haha “waiting for someone to be wide open”? You would think Rodgers isn’t a top 5-6 NFL Qb the way you talk about him…
Yes, the o-line was that bad. Allen Barbre (who was one of “Teddy’s” picks) is horrendous. Daryn Colledge playing LT is horrendous. Clifton will never be 100% healthy again, you are correct. He has begun to decline, and when you add a hamstring problem onto that it makes him worse.
Spitz graded out as their best o-lineman last year, and had graded out as their 2nd best o-lineman to Sitton (another one of “Teddy’s” picks) until he went down with an injury. But maybe that was just fabricated by the media too right?

Your defense and passing game
Your defense just seems so stout and despite your secondary woes, your pass rush scares the hell out of me.
And offensively, Big Ben and Ward and Holmes scares me. I might take some flak for saying this, but until watching the Steelers a bit more last year and this year, I never thought Holmes and Ward were all that great. But my mind has definitely changed since.
Ward is just that tough guy, who always seems to find a way to get it done, and Holmes just seems so explosive. Mike Wallace also scares me a bit as it seems like all the games I have watched this year, Wallace has had a long catch in pretty much every one.
by packallday555 on Dec 16, 2009 10:55 PM EST up reply actions
Ben is the wild card of course.
One thing we know about BB. This guy is capable of throwing for 400 yds. and 5 TDs on any given Sunday. Maybe our D will continue to suck, but as long as #7 is on the field, we have a fighting chance to outscore the Pack. But if the offense looks anything like it did in the past 5 games, the stadium might be almost empty by the start of the 4th quarter.
if that's the case......
bet on an empty stadium in the 4th!

I think we might be in for a surprise this weekend
This team has been pushed to the edge…it’s fight or flight time, and judging by tears from Hines, Tomlin, etc…I don’t believe this team is going to tuck-tail and run. Our best performances of the year have been against the “better” teams in the league, and our worst performances have been against the proverbial “bottom feeders.” This 2009 team plays up (or down) to their ocmpetition, which will suit us well this Sunday, and the rest of the season for that matter. Not having 43 is a big problem, and losing Kemo doesn’t help either. But, this team is stacked with “winners,” guys with multiple rings from mulitple championships, and they won’t go quietly. It’s about pride now, and that’s the type of motivation that helps a down team to rise up…like the Browns did against us.
Now, the Packers are a strong team, and they’re hot right now. But, despite the Steelers performance the last 5 weeks (puke), I’m not ready to just hand the game to GB. If we can pressure Rodgers and not give up the big pass plays (Ike Taylor, that means you!), and establish the run early, then I like our chances. Keeping the ball away from Woodson wouldn’t hurt either. A forced TO or two…wouldn’t that be something!
This is a statement game for Pit. The playoffs are almost out of sight, but their pride and reputation are still in their complete control. Let’s hope Tomlin’s “group of men” show up and play “Steeler football for 60 minutes.”

I have a question:
How’s your special teams unit this year? Is there any chance Logan could take one back? Has your unit allowed any kick off returns?

More importantly
How’s the Packers kick return game? I don’t know if you’ve heard, Jabooty, but the Steelers kick coverage has been a little suspect this season…more returns than Walmart on December 26.

It's alright, but don't worry too much
Our starting returner is Will Blackmon, but he’s on IR. Jordy Nelson is good, he does an excellent job getting good field position, but he’s not one that’ll take it to the house. He’s just a straight up north south runner, nothing flashy.
There's a strong chance Logan will take it to the house
Our Special Teams coverage is the worst in the NFL, and I can say that without any doubt in my mind. There is absolutely NOTHING bright about our Special Teams. Logan should bring one to the house and should do a good job in establishing good field position for your offense.
i applaud your humility,
but have you seen our kick coverage

Donald Driver vs. Hines Ward as a run blocker
i know Driver is an all-time great WR and Green Bay Packer, the dude reminds me alot of my favorite all-time Steeler, Hines Ward. I know they are both tough, hard nosed WR’S and they play the game the way it was meant to be played.
My question to you is who do you feel like the better run blocker is of the two.
We think he is the best blocking WR of all-time, I wondered if you Packer Fans held DD in the same regard from that aspect of his game.
"Coach Mike Tomlin promised that his Steelers would unleash hell, not look like it." Ed Bouchette PPG
Hines Ward, no question
Our best run blocking WR is Jordy Nelson. To a lot of us Packer fans, we like to refer to him as the white man’s version of Hines Ward. LOL. We have tremendous respect for Ward, well, some of us do I suppose. At least I do. Driver is alright at blocking, but his specialty is fighting for the extra yardage after the catch. He’s our go to guy. He’s also very difficult to bring down.
Hopefully he's not the greased up deaf guy on sunday
I don’t want to scream “somebody make a damn tackle!”

My son is a ...
fungus in our family as he loves all things Packers. He reminded me of the whooping Steelers put on the Packers in 98, a game we saw live courtesy Bill Tobin, and told me that payback time is here. We’ve watched them closely all season; the Packers are for real and quite frankly can only beat themselves from here on out. Running game and passing game are improved. Aaron is having a great year. Defensively, the team has not missed Al Harris’ absence. If the Packers have one shortfall, it seems they make a lot of trips down the field to come up empty or with a FG outcome. I think that problem may be just the ticket for the Steelers to pull an upset.
I guarantee a win for the Steelers

I have a bad feeling about this game and wouldn’t be surprised, but I hope we can get through this game.
Thanks for all the posts Steeler fans
It was a pleasure speaking with many of you. Things kind of drifted off on a few cases. I apologize for the Favre fan that rudely interupted our discussion. Good luck to you for the remainder of the season and the offseason as well, which should be big for the Steelers. Obviously, I’m hoping we beat you guys.
