Improving BTSC: Take 2

Since my last post went up in flames, I've decided to take another shot at this.  I don't want to quit BTSC. I believe it is still one of the best sources for anything Pittsburgh Steelers.

The following are recommendations.

Star-divide

  • Please spell check anything you type before you hit post/comment. There is a spell check built into the FanPost formatting toolbar. I use Firefox web browser because it has a built in spell check that runs real time.
  • Please read what you just wrote before you hit post/comment. This will help others be able to read what you just wrote. Proof reading has been implemented since grade school and we all should know how to do it.
  • Formatting helps with legibility. Break up your type into paragraphs. Double space your ideas. Use bullets for building a list. Make your posts flow.
  • Don't verbally attack others. I'm not absolved from being guilty in that case by any means. I shouldn't have said the things I did and I won't ever again. Anyone can hide behind a keyboard and sadly, it's what is becoming of the internet. Let's try and refrain from it here.
  • Punctuation and grammar help with legibility. No one is perfect. We didn't all major in English. I don't expect anyone's writing to be flawless. But if you make the effort, people will notice and your credibility will increase.
  • If you are new to BTSC, hang out for a while and drop some comments. Read up on the FanPosts and see how it's done. When you're ready to contribute, try and make your post as professional as possible.  Please don't type something in the heat of the moment. It's been very hard the last 5 weeks. I know many of you are as frustrated as I am. There is usually a thread to vent after a loss. Utilize it!  A new post entitled "Steelers suck!" or something of that nature isn't needed.
  • Try and keep the good material in the recent FanPosts! You can adjust how many recent FanPosts are viewable by going into your profile settings. If you have the same main ideas as someone else, a new FanPost isn't needed. A comment on a prior FanPost will suffice just fine.
  • Utilize the FanShots! Got a bit of tasty Steeler news that you don't want to elaborate on? Drop it into a FanShot. There isn't a minimum word requirement and it makes it quick and easy for others to find. Also, you can put up videos, pictures, and links in FanShots.
  • Don't troll on other teams pages. We don't want to see Who-dey here and I'm sure they don't want the same garbage on their site. Steeler Nation is know for it's intelligent fan base. If we mock them than we are no better than they are.
  • Never ever type in all caps. This one is extremely important! You wouldn't want someone screaming at your face. When I read all caps this is the feeling I get. It is hard to read and almost impossible to take seriously.
  • We love doing the wave here at BTSC. If you don't know what it is you will have to wait and see. ;)
  • We welcome any non offensive pictures that can give us a laugh in these hard times.

Remember, these are all recommendations. I'm not going to stand behind you and police your keyboard. If you love this site then take these into consideration. We should be trying to improve this Steelers hub, not destroy it.

The day before the browns loss

My dog dies. The day after the Browns loss, I get into a car accident. I should have never even signed onto SB Nation. No hard feelings. The Steelers still unite us.

Hope you weren’t seriously injured in the accident.

Wasn't injured

But a 5 mph roll caused my airbag to deploy. Airbags aren’t cheap. My dog lived to be 15 which is amazing because for the last 5 years of her life she was totally blind! She lived a good life and had a loving family. I’m getting another yellow lab so my black pup will have a companion. My dogs will and always have been a tandem of colors that are important to me. Black & Gold!

How can you write this garbage and then post a picture of Jews being led to slaughter during the holocaust with a funny caption? You sir are an idiot.

Seriously?

Are you really that sensitive? I didn’t post pictures of dead Jews laying in a ditch with lime covering their bodies. Google “holocaust” and tell me that isn’t the least offending picture that I can make a Holocaust reference too. Man, everyday TV must really piss you off 5020.

Yes, the Holocaust was a horrible thing and probably shouldn't be taken lightly

but in all seriousness, did he post a picture of a ditch packed to the brim with dead Jews? No, and you shouldn’t act like he did. He’s not parading around this forum in every topic doing nothing but spewing Jew hate bullshit. Your reaction was so over the top that at first I thought it was sarcastic. You don’t seem any more intelligent or better than you think he does by prefacing something as immature and futile as “you are an idiot!!!” on the internet with a good “you sir.” If you honestly believe that this man fosters some kind of hidden hate for Jewish people, than I’d say that you are ignorant at best

I understand you are a pretty respected member around here and have been for a while, but that doesn’t mean you should be free of criticism yourself for going over the top on something that I personally believe (and socal as well, I imagine) just was not that big of a deal. LIke it or not, you’re not in any position to impose your morals or ideas of what is taboo on to others. Leave it to the mods.

by klompus on Dec 17, 2009 1:40 PM EST up reply actions

Klompus
It is the Jewish holiday of Channukah. Kind of like Christmas. The guy who wrote this rant on how everyone should behave on BTSC posts a picture of 11 Jewish children at barb wire fence in prison uniforms who are either watching their parents being taken to a gas chamber or waiting to die themselves with a “funny caption” followed by “screw you it’s funny.”

Then your hero SoCal justifies the picture by saying these are 11 healthy Jews and just because 1 Jew got gassed doesn’t mean all 6 million did." No Klompus, I’m not the ignorant one here, SoCal is.

Implying that it’s more or less appropriate to make fun of the holocaust depending on the time of the year all but undermines your entire right to be offended, in my opinion. To me, its virtually the same as someone whos drunk 6 days out of the week but will look down on someone who gets drunk on Sunday, because it’s “God’s day.”

I never said So-Cal was my hero, I was just stating my opinion. Agree to disagree? I’ve got nothing against you personally, just thought I’d throw my 2 cents in as everyone else is, and play devil’s advocate. Was it right? Was it wrong? No one can really say universally. What offends certain people will not offend others, and this is a classic case of that. I was just trying to defend someone who was being made out to be a racist sonofabitch when I thought it was clear that he was just a victim of a diverse audience mis perceiving his joke on the Internet, a place famous for such miscommunications.

by klompus on Dec 17, 2009 2:07 PM EST up reply actions

It’s all good. Holiday or not, to me it would be like someone posting a picture of people jumping out of the WTC on 9/11 (or any date) with a funny caption about the Steelers season. Not in good taste and as a proud American I would have to say something. His picture was deleted so it wasn’t “nothing”

If he’d of just admitted to an error in judgement it would have been over. The real issue I had was with the defense. It was like “it’s only Jews and they are not actually being gassed so get a sense of humor…”

I just really hope you go back and look at the actual history of what was done to 6 million people. There is enough funny stuff about Bruce Arians that you don’t need to go to the Holocaust card for laughs…Go and be well SoCal. Merry Christmas. See you around the 405.

Sorry, I know this is a serious argument, but that cracked me up. Channukah is just a commercialized Jewish holiday and really is not as important as some of the others like Passover, Rosh Hashanah, or Yom Kippur.

First of all...

I didn’t make holocaust jokes, I made fun of the terrible gifts jewish people give and receive for Channukah.

Secondly: As a person of Germanic descent, one of my ancestors was a Lt. in the German army during that time period, and he was in before Hitlers “Beerhall Putsch” I say in the German army, because he was not a member of the National Socialist party. My great grandfather and great grandmother fled Germany to get away from all that craziness.

Lastly: I really couldn’t care less if someone feels the need to “light a fire under my ass” for making fun of something. Nothing is off limits if it’s not mean-spirited. Mine was all in good fun, and didn’t cross the line into being horribly offensive to an entire race of people. Granted, I didn’t see the picture everyone is talking about, but I can’t imagine it was in good taste.

I’m not trying to attack you at all, do not misunderstand me. I just want you to please maybe think before you speak (or type, as it were), and don’t go masking assumptions about people you don’t know.

That was kind of the point.

If a joke is “all in good fun” it should be taken as such. Mean-spirited “jokes” should be taken as such as well, which means if someone has a problem with it, they should be able to voice it. I don’t know…call me weird, but sometimes I’ll tell racist jokes to the people(s) they make fun of. Because, I am of the mind that if you can laugh at something (racist jokes), they no longer have any effect on you. People are WAY too sensitive nowadays, IMO, and if you can’t laugh at yourself, you have no right whatsoever to laugh at someone else.

teaching and college professor are one in the same.

so few people make a stable living off of writing or “being on the history channel” that seriously considering those career options isn’t really smart. add curator to your list, and then think of how many curator positions there are. History degrees just arent that useful. My boss at the YMCA had a history degree!

It’s awesome to find a site where the opinions are so similar to the ones in my own house. So very sorry to hear about your dog and your accident. I would have been a bit moody myself. Our english bulldog is named Parker Ward. Didn’t think to keep the dog colors consistant. Parker got his name because he is one of the few bulldogs that was born without a C-section. He snuck out before the vet appointment. At the time Parker was playing at his best and sneeking past the defense so it seemed so appropriate. As for Ward, well who doesn’t love that guy so just hope my dog will smile as much as Hines does! I’m enjoying getting to know you other fans!

First of all...

Kudos to SoCal, great post, you made it more “friendly” to the ones with sticks up their asses.

Secondly, I’ll probably get crucified for this but I honestly don’t care. Sure maybe the picture was of bad taste but the meaning behind it was not as I understood. Secondly, these hypocrite anecdotes have me up to here! Seriously, we all make a joke every now and then, we ALL make a tasteless joke every now and then, sexist, racist, you name it. What ticks me off the most, and before anyone sends me to the gallows, I have many close Jewish friends, but what really ticks me off the most is this whole super friggin protection of the Holocaust. It’s not even something that happened in any of our lifetimes, I bet if SoCal posted a tasteless pic regarding a black person, then it’s funny, probably tasteless, but he would not be called out THAT bad. The Holocaust was 60 years ago, GET OVER IT. Blacks are still ostracized in society, heck I’ll stick make a black joke. Jokes about Arab terrorists are also funny and this is stuff that’s more recent. But once you make a Jew jokes you’re a racist, this is all hypocrite hate spew, I refuse to believe no one ever makes a tasteless joke regarding blacks, arabs, asians, latino’s or women! If that is allowed then ALL is allowed I don’t care. The death of one person is equal to the other, I don’t care if 6 million Jews died, or 50 Million Rwandans, or 100 Million blacks in slavery, it was all a horrible cause let’s not let who died most be the reason why we don’t make these jokes, give me a break…

Again, for all those ignorants out there calling me a racist or anti-semite, I’m already smirking cause believe me, I’m as humanist as it gets and grew up in a muti-racial environment and have so many friends of so many elasticities that any taunts or disrespect towards me proves my point even more. So in advance, thank you for proving me correct because I know there will be the few who well falter.

How many Baltimore Ravens does it take to win a Super Bowl? Nobody knows and we may never find out

I was actually angry

The worst thing is I typed elasticities instead of ethnicities, see spell check can be bad sometimes :P

If you want to make a tasteless joke, fine...

Feel free. But do it in another place, another site, or face to face with someone.

The bottom line is the joke was in poor taste, and innapropriate for this site. It was removed, I think we all need to just get over it, and not make such a big deal out of it.

+1 and amen to that!

I do have to agree that IF you do make tasteless jokes, do that in your own time and not on a sports blog

Word

I’m sick of talking about it too. We can all let bygones be bygones. Someone will make another tasteless joke on this site. It’s just a matter of time. But, who it’s tasteless to is what makes it subjective. You say tomatoe I say tomato. And the world keeps on spinnin’.

In unrelated news, Cowboy fans once again show why football is second to getting shwasted.

I'll do my best to be less sensitive

if you’ll try a little harder to be more sensitive in your selections.

Maybe it’s just the mom in me, but when you see kids in horrible situations (and I don’t care if it happened in my lifetime or not) it tugs at my heart. 9/11 did happen in my lifetime and there will be a generation in the future that wasn’t around that day. I hope no one lets that generation forget.

I lived about 35 minutes from NYC and was at work that day. It was a beautiful day in NY. Then the sky did indeed fall~ the schools were locked-down, Thruway was closed to all but emergency vehicles and I had 3 children in school that I couldn’t get to. Unless you’re a parent, you’ll never understand the gut wrenching feeling that overwhelms you when you can’t get to your kids. Think a loss to the Browns hurts like a SOB? Ha. Pales in comparison.

Just show a little compassion and maybe even empathy/sympathy if you can… that’s all I ask.

Last I’ll say about this topic. Bygones now bygones. Thanks for listening!

Kudos 1BlkGldFan

As one of the multiple BTSC posters that were offended and weighed in on this I stand with 1BlkGldFan. Like 1 this is my final statement on the subject.

Poor innocent child/victims should not be the punchline in a tasteless joke on a sports website. There is no defense of the indefensible. Comments and pictures were removed from this website which hasn’t happened often in the years I have been here. That is because they were offensive and wrong.

There are certain things I am passionate about. I will always stick up for my family, my country, my team and the children. And to those above that think that the Holocaust is not something that happened in any of our lifetime I will remind you that this is not “your” world it is all of our world and this is not the Steelers “Kiddie” Nation it is one Steelers Nation for all.
Happy Holidays to everyone. Again, I am ready to let this drop unless you want it to continue.

Like I said before

It’s all about the context of the joke. If, say, you are telling a joke to be funny, or to point out the irony/stupidity/hypocrisy of a situation, then that’s okay. If, however, you are telling a joke to demean or belittle something/someone, that’s not okay.

Taken out of context, a joke, no matter how light-spirited, could be perceived as racist, homophobic, ETC.
