2010 NFL Mock Draft : Updated 12/15
For those of you who haven't heard by now, Washington QB Jake Locker has decided to stay in school. On the surface this doesn't seem to matter to the Steelers since they wouldn't be targeting a QB anyway. But other teams who would've targeted him could now be looking at prospects we want. As always, I look forward to your comments.
1. St. Louis Rams: Jimmy Clausen QB, Notre Dame
The Rams number one priority this off season will be to find a new Quarterback. There’s no debate about it. In the last two years they have passed on Matt Ryan and Mark Sanchez. Clausen had a great season despite his teams overall poor play and scouts will love the fact that he plays in a pro-style offense under center. Heading into an uncapped year means the Rams can dump Marc Bulger’s salary without any future consequences. If they manage to find a QB in free agency they might target Nebraska DT Ndamukong Suh, who has solidified himself as the most dominant defensive player in college football this year.
2. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Ndamukong Suh DT, Nebraska
The Bucs don’t need a QB or a LT so Suh wins by default since their other greatest need is a WR but there isn’t one worthy of this high a pick. Right now their most pressing need is for someone to collapse the pocket and Suh can do that very well. Suh is the type of 3 down, 2-gap player that is perfect for defensive coordinator Jim Bates’ scheme. After watching Suh absolutely dominate Texas’ lineman in the Big12 championship to the tune of 4 & ½ sacks and being the first defensive player since 1997 to be invited to the Heisman ceremony, he looks to be the best defensive lineman prospect since Warren Sapp. As long as he’s available, Suh is the pick. If he’s not then this pick would change to Tenn. Safety Eric Berry.
3. Detroit Lions: Russell Okung OT, Oklahoma State
The Lions need a cornerstone LT to protect their 40 million dollar man in Matt Stafford. Okung is the top LT prospect and plays a near-flawless game. He's athletic, uses his hands very well, and has quick feet to get out in front of speed rushers. Current Lion Jeff Backus is having an up and down season and would better serve the team being moved to RT and they could move Goster Cherilus to RG. If Okung is off the board at this point, look for the Lions to take the best defensive player available or trade back to acquire more picks. This team needs playmakers everywhere other than QB or TE, so this pick could be any of the elite prospects that are available.
4. Cleveland Browns: Eric Berry S, Tennessee
Cleveland needs help everywhere. This franchise is a disaster. I could possibly see them going after a QB if they don’t feel as though Brady Quinn is the answer in which case they would go for Notre Dame QB Jimmy Clausen, although Quinn has shown a little improvement over the last several weeks. Already having a cornerstone LT in Joe Thomas means they won’t target OK ST OT Russell Okung. Not only myself but every draft pundit you hear, including Mel Kiper and Todd McShay of ESPN, have said that Berry is an absolute stud and top player of this draft. He's drawing comparisons to Ed Reed, which is just about the best compliment a safety can get. Berry is a nightmare for opposing QB's. College teams don't even throw in his direction. He's got a nose for the ball and is a serious threat to take a pick back to the house every time. In the event that team owner Randy Learner fires coach Mangini at the end of his first season, this will almost definitely change to QB as most new coaches would prefer to start with a QB of their own choosing.
5. Kansas City Chiefs: Bruce Campbell OT, Maryland
Matt Cassell needs a LT that will give him enough time to throw the ball down field. KC spent a lot of money on Cassell and it would be nice if they got a return on their investment. It would also allow them to move 2008 1st round pick Brandon Albert to LG, his natural position, since it doesn't seem like he can make it playing on the outside. Campbell is showing strong play this season and is very similar to Okung. With Berry already off the board there are no other elite prospects available at a position of need for the Chiefs to consider with a top 5 pick aside from OT. In the event that KC decides to skip on Campbell given his injury history, look for them to trade back and target USC OT Charles Brown or Florida CB Joe Hayden.
6. Oakland Raiders: Taylor Mays S, USC
I continue to waffle on this pick. Al Davis’ love for speed might be too big to pass on Mays, although he will stumble out of the top 10 to 15 on draft day if he falls past Oakland. As many who have read my mock draft before already know, I’m not very high on Mays. He plays without discipline, has stiff hips, takes poor angles, and is usually more worried about laying someone out rather than holding his coverage. If Oakland comes to its senses and picks a replacement for the failed JaMarcus Russell experiment, Davis will surely go with Arkansas QB Ryan Mallett who has a cannon for an arm. And don’t be surprised if Davis goes with Florida DE Carlos Dunlap, whose freakish measurables Davis with also love.
7. Washington Redskins: Sam Bradford QB, Oklahoma
With the way Jason Campbell is continuing his poor play the Redskins(Dan Snyder) will definitely look to replace him, regardless of the fact that Snyder’s impatience with head coaches and coordinators is the reason for it or not. In all likelihood Coach Zorn will be fired at the end of the season. Regardless of whom Snyder gets to replace him they will want to bring a new QB to start fresh. A better pick would be an OT but Snyder is going to go with a flashy, big name like Bradford. As ESPN has reported, Bradford is having his shoulder operated on by the renowned Dr. James Andrews, who also just happens to be the Redskins team doctor. So Snyder will definitely have the inside track on whether Bradford’s shoulder is going to hold up. If Snyder doesn’t think Bradford shoulder will hold up they may target Arkansas’ Ryan Mallett.
8. Buffalo Bills: Gerald McCoy DT, Oklahoma
McCoy is considered by many to be the most technically sound defensive lineman and would be perfect to help the Bills horrendous run defense. Look for the Bills to fill the gaping hole left by the Jason Peters trade to Philly if McCoy isn’t available. It’s also not out of the question that they target one of the top tier QB’s given that they will have a new head coach and as of yet Trent Edwards hasn’t been able to distinguish himself.
9. Seattle Seahawks: Ryan Mallett QB, Arkansas
Look for the Hawks to find an heir apparent to often injured Matt Hasselbeck. Mallett has a few kinks to work out with his footwork but he has a rocket for an arm and has played impressively this year. Another dire need is to replace the aging and oft-injured Walter Jones. They may consider trading back and targeting Rutgers’ Anthony Davis or USC OT Charles Brown. If Bruce Campbell or even Russell Okung manages to slip then I would expect the Seahawks to go for one of them and try to find a project QB later in the draft such as Old Miss. QB Jevan Snead or Texas’ Colt McCoy.
10. Denver Broncos(via Chicago Bears): Rolando McClain ILB, Alabama
The Broncos have very few holes to fill as they have plenty of young talent that will develop over time. But after going 6-0 they have been exposed for their lack of the deep ball. If given the opportunity they may look to go QB with this pick if one of the top prospects at the position slips. With Eddie Royal, Brandon Stokley, and Brandon Marshall they really need a strong armed QB that can sling it downfield. Look for them to take the best defensive player available if none of the QB’s slip down this far. McClain is continuing to rise up draft boards and would be a perfect fit considering he already plays in a 3-4 defense at Alabama. Other considerations would be a NT like Alabama’s Terrence Cody, be he’s starting to fall due to conditioning concerns, and Florida’s Joe Hayden.
11. San Francisco 49ers(via Carolina Panthers): Joe Hayden CB, Florida
Hayden is the top CB prospect in this draft. The 49ers need someone to shore up their secondary. Perhaps their greatest need is a RT to play opposite Joe Staley which they could address with their other first round pick. There will also be good RT prospects available in the second round such as Notre Dames’ Sam Young.
12. Houston Texans: Earl Thomas S, Texas
The Texans need help in multiple areas but the biggest concern is in the secondary, especially if they let the unhappy Dunta Robinson leave via free agency in the offseason. Thomas is only a red shirt sophomore but is having a great year and being a local boy will only help boost ticket sales. Thomas has been quoted as saying that he will not pass on first round money. They would absolutely love for Joe Hayden to slip to them.
13. San Francisco 49ers: Bryan Bulaga, OT, Iowa
Bulaga has had a down season with injuries and a thyroid condition but would be a perfect fit at RT at the pro level with his work ethic and run-blocking ability. I know this seems high for a right tackle but having a road grader to open up more running lanes for Frank Gore is worth the price. They may also consider a long-term solution to their QB troubles if Mallett slips, although Alex Smith seems to be redeeming his career after a porous start
14. Pittsburgh Steelers: Dan Williams NT, Tennessee
Unfortunately what the Steelers need, help in the secondary, is not going to be filled if they end up drafting here. This is too high for any of the DB’s that would be available. Without question the Steelers greatest need is in the secondary, either a cornerback or safety. It’s become ridiculous to watch this group give up leads, and eventually the game, each week to far inferior opponents. They need a safety who would eventually replace Ryan Clark given that he’s in the final year of his contract and he’s over 30 years old, and replace Tyrone Carter who has been burned badly in each game while filling in for Troy. I’m positive Ryan Clark will take a discount to finish his career in the Burgh. In my opinion Williams has surpassed “Mount” Cody as the top NT prospect in the draft. He’s got all the attributes that Cody has plus he doesn’t seem to wear down as much during the course of a game. We can target a safety in round two such as South Florida’s Nate Allen, or in the third with Georgia’s Reshad Jones. Casey Hampton is 32 years old, in the final year of his contract, and with two Super Bowl rings already on his chubby fingers he may seek a big pay day somewhere else. The Steelers are going to need someone large enough to anchor their defense so the linebackers can continue to flow freely to the opposing QB. The offensive line for the most part has gotten better every week and no longer seems like a dire position of need. Idaho’s Mike Iupati could fill the one weak point at RG where Darnell Stapleton and Trai Essex are lacking and rookie Craig Urbik didn’t show much during the off season. He’s a big road grader and could possibly slide over and play RT if Willie Colon leaves via free agency. Although at 14 its way too high to consider any lineman other than tackle. Of course there’s also a chance the Steelers may be able to get him or Alabama OG Mike Johnson in the second or third round. Cornerback could also be another option considering none of the rookies from last year have seemed to distinguish themselves, although it’s definitely too early to tell. It wouldn't surprise me to see the Steelers trade up and target Joe Hayden. To a lesser extent would be to find an eventual replacement for James Farrior. He’s playing at a high level this year but he’s 34 years old and since it takes a couple years for linebackers to learn the system anyway it would be nice to find his replacement now. Keyarn Fox has filled in admirably at ILB for Lawrence Timmons but is not a permanent solution. Besides, Fox is too valuable as a special teamer. If he’s available we should definitely take Rolando McClain. A lot of people are high on Florida ILB Brandon Spikes, who may be great against the run but is somewhat of a liability in zone coverage. An option in the third round would be TCU ILB Daryl Washington. A player I really like in the later rounds would be Baylor’s ILB Joe Pawelek. Clemson RB C.J. Spiller would be a slightly long-shot option. Willie Parker is most likely not going to be resigned in the off season and Spiller would be a great speedy compliment to Mendenhall’s power for a lot less cost than Parker. But more importantly he would also fill what has become a dire position of need over the years as a return man. Stephan Logan has been serviceable but it’s inefficient to have a return specialist on the active roster, plus he can’t manage to down a kickoff for a touchback even when he’s 7 yards deep. One player I would love for the Steelers to take in the second or third round would be Stanford RB Toby Gerhart, who has become my official man-crush, regardless of whether the Steelers need him or not.
15. Atlanta Falcons: Derrick Morgan DE, Georgia Tech
The Falcons will take the best defensive player available, particularly an OLB or DE. Previously I had them taking Ole’ Miss. DE Greg Hardy but he has some injury issues the last two years and wasn’t even able to finish out this season. Morgan’s stock has continued to grow with each passing week this season and he has become the top DE for a 4-3 scheme. Look for the Falcons to also target a DB like Virginia’s Ras-I Dowling.
16. Tennessee Titans: Carlos Dunlap DE, Florida
Who would have thought that Vince Young would turn this season around? The Titans are starting to roll after the most disappointing start a team could have. They have multiple needs but Young’s play so far means they won’t be looking for a QB. Cornerback is their biggest need but without one worthy of this pick they’ll address their D-line which has been exposed by the loss of Albert Haynesworth to free agency. Anyone who’s read my mock draft before knows I’m not big on Dunlap and I have likened him to Vernon Gholston. But there’s no denying his physical gifts and maybe the Titans can get him to mature.
17. New York Jets: Dez Bryant WR, Oklahoma State
The Jets biggest need is in the secondary, particularly a corner to play opposite Darrell Revis. Unfortunately there are no corners besides Joe Hayden that are worthy of a pick this high although they could target Ras-I Dowling. They may also look for defensive line help at DT where Kris Jenkins has had the second season-ending injury of his career and also for a defensive end that can play in a 3-4, but there are none worthy of a pick this high. The suspension of Bryant for lying about conversations with Deion Sanders will not hurt is draft stock. He’s got all the intangibles you look for in a receiver and looks a lot like Andre Johnson did when he came out of Miami. The Jets may also consider USC WR Damian Williams, whom QB Mark Sanchez had a great re pore with during his last year in college and will almost assuredly lobby for.
18. Jacksonville Jaguars: Tim Tebow QB/H-Back, Florida
The Jags young receiving corps has come on this year and as such seems to be no longer a dire position of need. It’s only been recently that I’ve had Tebow going in the first round of the draft. As the Jags continue to win games and fall back in the draft order Tebow has become are real option for them, especially since team owner Wayne Weaver had said previously that he would draft him given the opportunity. What the Jags need most is a big name to lure fans to the game so they don’t eventually become the L.A. Jaguars. I know he isn’t a first round talent but this pick is not about talent, it’s about selecting a local hero who will bring fans to the game. Another option here would be a 4-3 defensive end as the Jags make the transition back to after a woeful attempt at using a 3-4 in which case Georgia Tech DE Derrick Morgan would be a good option if he manages to slip down this far. I would’ve considered giving them Florida’s Carlos Dunlap if he were available but I think they have had their fill of under-performing and immature DE’s from Florida like Derrick Harvey.
19. Miami Dolphins: Terrence Cody DT, Alabama
With the secondary shored up in last years draft look for the Fins to plug up their defensive front. They have been using aging veterans to plug the gaps for some time and could really use a shot of youth. Alternatives here could be help at linebacker. Team architect Bill Parcells may not look favorably on Cody’s prior weight issues in which case he may go for a receiver to help the progression of young QB Chad Henne. The best option would be USC WR Damian Williams, who many consider to be the most complete WR in the draft. They would also consider Missouri OLB Sean Weatherspoon or Oklahoma’s Travis Lewis.
20. New York Giants: Ras-I Dowling, CB/FS Virginia
Previously I would’ve thought the Giants would continue to stock pile D-linemen but they have been shredded through the air and could really use secondary help, particularly at safety. Dowling has played CB at Virginia but has the size to also develop into a quality free safety in the pros and would be a good match with Kenny Phillips when he returns from injury next year. They may also consider a MLB to eventually replace Antonio Pierce, who even before his injury this year was struggling.
21. Baltimore Ravens: Damian Williams WR, USC
This is a toss-up between a WR and Oklahoma TE Jermaine Gresham. Todd Heap has been surprisingly healthy this year which is the first time in a long time. Many consider Williams to be the most complete WR in the draft. He can also give a boost in the return game as well. A lot of people will think that the Ravens will draft a CB, especially considering how badly they have been torched through the air, but the Ravens draft on value and there won’t be any other first round CB’s left. If not Williams then Gresham will be the pick.
22. Arizona Cardinals: Anthony Davis OT, Rutgers
Arizona needs LT help bad. They drafted Levi Brown a couple years ago to be a RT when they thought Matt Leinart, a lefty, would be the QB of the future. Well he hasn't been so far and Warner is suffering because of it. Having Davis slip down this far would be ideal for the Cards.
23. Seattle Seahawks (via Denver Broncos): Charles Brown OT, USC
Having taken care of their QB needs earlier in the draft, the Seahawks will look to take the best OT available. Walter Jones will probably retire at the end of the season and Sean Locklear cannot stay healthy. They will need someone to keep Matt Hasselbeck upright long enough for them to develop Ryan Mallett. They may also look for a RB, but they should be able to grab either Cal’s Jahvid Best or Georgia Tech’s Jonathan Dwyer in the second round.
24. Dallas Cowboys: Trent Williams OT, Oklahoma
The Cowboys need to take an OT to replace the aging Flozell Adams who’s just too old to hack it anymore. They also need help at safety and perhaps a receiver like Notre Dame’s Golden Tate to go with Miles Austin. Jerry Jones may look to trade up for a flashier pick.
25. New England Patriots: Sergio Kindle DE/OLB, Texas
The Patriots need more youth and depth in their linebacking corps. Kindle lines up all over the field for Texas and is the sort of versatile player Belichick loves. And speaking of versatility, it wouldn’t shock me to see them draft Tim Tebow if he slips past Jacksonville. He could be their QB for life after Brady. And yes I know this is high for a QB who could be a back-up for a few years, but he can also serve as an H-back and be put in for trick plays such as the Wildcat. He also has that air of smugness that reminds me of Brady that I hate so much.
26. Green Bay Packers: Jason Fox OT, Miami
Green Bay will take the best tackle available after watching QB Aaron Rogers eat dirt every week. It’s obvious that Rogers is starting to show that the never-ending beatings each week are taking a toll on him. This is a little high for Fox, who many consider to be a high second round pick, so they may look to add an OLB to replace Aaron Kampman who’s in the final year of his contact and clearly not comfortable after making the switch from DE to OLB.
27. Philadelphia Eagles: Travis Lewis OLB, Oklahoma
Without any tackle prospects left to replace the often injured Shawn Andrews, look for the Eagles to take the top DE or Linebacker prospect available. Lewis is only a redshirt sophomore and in the event that he decides to stay in school this pick would change to Missouri’s Sean Weatherspoon. They also need to fill the DE spot opposite of Trent Cole but may find better value for that in the second round.
28. Cincinnati Bengals: Jermaine Gresham TE, Oklahoma
The Bengals don’t have many real needs at this point, so look for them to take Gresham to shore up the weak point on their explosive offense. Even though he's been out with a knee injury for the year, he will have plenty of time to rehab before the NFL combine.
29. San Diego Chargers: Brandon LaFell WR, LSU
Assuming they resign LT Marcus McNeill and in all probability franchise tag Shawn Merriman, they will most likely target someone to play opposite budding wideout Vincent Jackson. Other options may be to take Clemson RB C.J. Spiller since they will most likely lose either Darren Sproles to free agency or cut LaDainian Tomlinson after the season, or a NT to replace the aging Jamal Williams. Unfortunately with “Mount” Cody and Dan Williams already taken, there are no other prospect NT’s with a first round grade. LaFell fits the mold of a taller wideout that the Chargers prefer.
30. Minnesota Vikings: Greg Hardy DE, Ole’ Miss.
Without too many major holes on the team the Vikings have the luxury of bolstering the strength of their team, the defensive line. The one weak link is the end spot opposite Jared Allen. Hardy has some injury issues but is adept at playing both the run and the pass. They may also consider future replacements for the Williams boys such as Rickey Sapp of Clemson or Jared Odrick from Penn State.
31. Indianapolis Colts: Sean Weatherspoon OLB, Missouri
As always, the defense is the weak spot on this team. Weatherspoon is probably the best OLB suited to play in a base 4-3 defense. The Colts will also consider a CB such as Wake Forest’s Brandon Ghee or GT free safety Morgan Burnett. Also, don’t be surprised to see them trade up for a LT prospect, where Tony Ugoh’s replacement Charles Johnson will be a free agent.
32. New Orleans Saints: C.J. Spiller RB, Clemson
There are rumors that the Saints will be letting go of Reggie Bush in the offseason. His injury history and unreliability are not worth the 8 millions dollars he will be due. The Saints will need to find someone to replace him. Spiller is similar in the aspects of speed and vision, only he does not shy away from contact. They may also consider taking a linebacker, especially if Sean Weatherspoon is still available.

I like the Ravens to get Arrelious Benn, WR from Illinois. I think he is better than Williams.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
Benn...
has already stated that he’s 90% sure he’s staying for his senior year. That’s why he’s not in my mock draft.
Is he the one with hands of stone?
I always get him and Bryant mixed up. I’ve heard that Williams is the best WR out there b/c he’s a great route runner with good speed and hands. But I haven’t heard all that much about the other WR’s.

Yea, that's Benn
Bryant is a beast to. I was reading this story on Arrelious Benn about a month ago and they were talking about his high school days. This one part of the article, they talked about how in one game, Benn caught a pass and it took 6 people to bring him down. There was then basically a pile of people on top of him, and a quote from his highschool coach stated "I remember seeing Arrelious having 6 defender on top of him, then you heard this loud scream and Arrelious literally exploded out of the pile, throwing all 6 players off of him at once.
The dude is a beast. In next year’s class, him and Julio Jones will most likely go in the top 15.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
Next year could potentially be the year of the big recevier
Julio Jones 6’4" 220
AJ Green 6’4" 205
Michael Floyd 6’3" 225
Jonathan Baldwin 6’5" 225
And then Benn.
Thing is the first 4 are all juniors next year. All are about even in numbers. I think at least 2 come out, but all those guys could be drafted in round 1 and 2 if they were to declare next year imo. That is assuming they all stay healthy next year. I would have loved to have Baldwin go from the Pitt Panthers to the Pitt Steelers, but apparently he’s got some character concerns and that’s an immediate turn off to the front office. Wouldn’t mind any of the other in Black and Gold, and would hate if Jones was a Raven. That man is a freak.

I love A.J. Green
Admittedly I’m partial because I’m a UGA fan, but Green is going to be a great WR in the NFL some day. Reminds me a lot of Randy Moss. He has deceptive speed, great hands, and is phenomial at using his body to catch the football at its highest point.
I think we should stick with Sweed
You gotta give the guy a chance, 5 passes won’t cut it. I watched Crabtree drop about 4 passes in SF game against Arizona, wide open, one of them would have went for a TD. They kept going to him and you know what, he started catching and caught a TD pass. The same thing for Hixon for the Giants. he dropped 3 straight passes and manning went back to him and Hixon made the catch then an excellent move to break a tackle and run for a TD. You have to keep going to these young receivers when they are struggling so they can keep their confidence. If you have no confidence you will drop a lot of passes. We need to go to Sweed more.
Steelers football is 60 mins.

So wait...
When they drop a pass, benching them immediately isn’t always the best option? Huh. (sarcasm)
Nothing is better for a young receiver than showing him you have confidence in them, even when they make a mistake. Even th big ones, they’re going to happen.
I have to wonder what effects this has had on Sweed’s psyche.

Yea I wish I would see more of Sweed
But they must just not have any faith in him whatsoever which confuses me. I saw Tyler Grisham in the game this past week, before I saw Sweed.

Update on Benn...
Now I feel like a fool. After saying this morning that Benn was going to stay for his senior season, it was announced that he is going to hold a press conference this afternoon and declare for the 2010 NFL draft.
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/football/ncaa/12/16/benn-nfl/index.html
An NT would be great, but this is actually the first Mock i’ve seen that puts Dan Williams in the first round, much less in the top 15. If Williams was their guy, this would be the perfect time to trade back a few spots and pick up an extra 3rd or 4th.
By the way, your mock’s are always a pleasure. Thanks for keeping them up!
by BluegrassSteeler on Dec 15, 2009 6:18 PM EST reply actions
Thank you so much
It’s nice to know that people enjoy my mock draft. I post similarly in mock draft forums and all anyone in there does is tear down my choices. It’s never a polite discussion.
Regarding Williams, I’ve seen a couple where he’s in the first round, although I’ve only seen one other one that had him going that high. He’s still somewhat of an under-the-radar guy since Tennessee didn’t play on a national stage like Alabama has all year. Once the scouting combine rolls around you’ll see his name mentioned a lot more with regards to the first round.
Very nice Mock draft.
I enjoy them as I’m sure many do. I wish we could get Berry. Would it be insane to trade up? Use Limas as some bait or something? We need a shut down Safety combo. Berry next to troy would be epic!

Berry would be a wet dream come true
I wish they would trade up for Berry. Although I don’t see Limas as much trade bait. He hasn’t shown anything that would make him valuable to other teams. I would actually like to see the Steelers convert him into a free safety. He’s already shown that he can deliver a good block, so I doubt he would be afraid to tackle. Plus we’ve already gotten used to DB’s who can’t catch.
True that
I think Troy would work better as a FS anyhow. Ok scratch the Limas idea. Is it still nuts to trade away 2nd and 3rd round picks to get him? We need this man in the black and gold!

great stuff as always
all day at work today i was hoping you’d post this. I looked around at a few other mocks and they were interesting to say the least. I saw on ESPN’s new mock (insider) that they had us picking 12 and getting OT Bruce Campbell, who’s long gone in this one. Other’s I saw had Taylor Mays, Ras-I Dowling, and Mount Cody for us in the first, and one had Spikes dropping to us in the 2nd.
Of course, this is all pure speculation, but at least it’s fun and gets me thinking positively. Thank you.

Bruce Cambell wouldn't be a bad option
If he were available when we pick, and McClain, Hayden, and Berry were not, he would be a great addition to the team. The only thing that scares me about him is his long list of nagging injuries. If it weren’t for that he would probably be rated higher than Okung. He could start instantly at RT, allowing us to move Colon to RG which has been the biggest weak spot in our line this year.
Great option.
I attend Maryland and have watched Campbell for the since he has been here. The guy might be the strongest OL in the draft. He is not your typical “fat” lineman either. He is about 6’5" and it looks like he has no fat on him. Ive seen him around campus a few times, and he is just a freak of nature. Would definitely be a great player to have at either Left or Right Tackle. But I could not stand to see a fellow Terp in Black and Mustard.

Joe Hayden
Solid CB prospect… would be a much better option seeing is how Williams is a 2-3 round prospect. I see us holding off and getting one of the more pressing needs than DL in the first round.
Agree
we may have to bite the bullet and try to sign hampton seeing that we probably won’t get suh or cody and the secondary is more pressing at this point, we can draft another DE to get younger on the line in the 2nd or 3rd round, or a ILB in one of those spots

Very much enjoy reading your weekly mock.
Not so happy about seeing us steadily climb it though.

what do you know about ziggy hood playing NT?
i remember hearing scouts say that he might be able to play NT when we drafted him, but I’m still not sure. He doesn’t seem to have the build that hampton does (although no one really does…. or should) so I don’t know if he’ll be able to consistently take the double team that nose tackles need to in order for the 3-4 to work..
do you think he could play NT or is he more of a DE in the 3-4 scheme?

also, if we dont go with williams id love to grab taylor mays
usc safeties have been good to us. having him next to troy would be great. as much as i hate to say it though, i dont see us taking a corner in the first few rounds. we have 2 rookies this year and i think the coaching staff will trust itself to coach them up- as it should.
however if willie colon leaves too we might have to replace him, but i doubt the front office will let that happen since he might be our best run blocker. maybe campbell? i havent looked into him much but it sounds like hed be a great option.

Mays
Ziggy is most definitely a DE in the 3-4. As you point out, he just doesn’t have the right build to be a big run clogging NT. Sunny Harris though looks like he might be able to play either position, although he leans a bit toward being a DE as well.
Honestly, if Mays gets past Al Davis we might very well be able to draft him without trading up (Ironic, since if he had come out last year he might have been a Top-5 pick). It remains to be seen if he’s really worth a Top-15 pick though – big hitter, amazing measurables (size and speed), but too aggressive and maybe not fluid enough in coverage to be the kind of impact player you’d really like to see him be.
That being said, he’d be an instant upgrade over Clark. The real question is whether or not he’s enough of an upgrade to warrant such a high draft pick.
by BluegrassSteeler on Dec 15, 2009 11:51 PM EST up reply actions
I think so
next to troy he’d learn what formations to look for and where to be. I would like having 2 USC safeties. I think he would become a star at SS. Move Troy over and look out in 2 years. QB’s would be sharting themselves at the idea of throwing it deep. WR’s would also need a manpon at the thought of getting drilled by either DB. Which in turn would make our pass rush more effective. I’m thinking historical D within the next 2 years if we draft right and get the right coaches.
I would definitely want Berry over Mays but would be very pleased with either. You know Mays would be stoked to be playing with Troy. :)

If you think you’ve got a chance to break some of Mays’ bad habits through coaching him up – teaching him not to get out position, working to refine his instincts (like Troy), teaching him how to cover a bit better – then you’ve really got to take him. His upside is just too great to pass up.
That is, if you think you’ve got the coaching skills to do it.
If you could get anything close to Troy like production out of Mays he’s easily worth the pick. If people knew how Troy would turn out he’d easily be the first or second player picked back in 2003.

Mays projects better as a ...
OLB in a 4-3 defense rather than as a safety. Troy’s skills in coverage, in traffic and his ability to getting in the backfield were much better than Mays’, he just needed to make better decisions and be more consistent in the tackle. Mays’ needs a lot more work in more areas and as a result is too risky as a 1st rd safety.

Couple of notes
1) I don’t know if Spiller gets past the Chargers. With Sproles probably becoming an FA this season (unless they want to franchise him again) and LT clearly in the twilight of his career I don’t know if they can pass up such an all purpose weapon as Spiller. With the receivers they have, including Gates, they have a very dangerous passing game – especially the deep ball. If they could also get a strong ground game going this offense could be utterly unbelievable.
2) I wonder if Tampa can pass on Berry if he’s available. Suh is obviously a once in a decade player – probably the best 3 technique DT since Warren Sap – but Berry is a rare player as well. Not to mention Tampa’s secondary is getting burned on a pretty consistent basis. And I don’t think you can totally discount the Monte Kiffin connection – everyone on that team knows and trusts Kiffin, and he says that Berry is No. 1 pick good.
3) You are absolutely right about Clausen. He is bound (or perhaps doomed) to the Rams. That is, unless there’s something they love about Bradford that Jimmy doesn’t have.
4) Just a thought: Is Oakland a threat to take Bradford? Given that in all probability there’ll be no cap next year, they could drop Ja’Marcus (who is obviously not an NFL caliber QB) without a penalty and would be free to draft their QB of the future. While Al Davis is certainly a lunatic, he can’t be blind to how much better the Raiders have played with Gradkowski under center. Brandford is the type of QB that could turn Oakland around. Or at least make them respectable. And Al did take a safety at the top of the second round last year and Huff in the 1st a couple of years ago, so I don’t know if even he’d want to invest that much into the position, despite whatever measurables Mays puts up.
Of course, I think i may be giving Davis too much credit here. After all, he hasn’t show us that he can learn from his mistakes so far.
5) I wonder if the Bills don’t try to grab one of the top OT’s this year. Their OL has been an absolute disaster. Poor Eric Wood shudder
Again, awesome Mock. I seriously look forward to it every week.

Thanks for the great feedback
1. It’s a real possibility that Spiller could be selected by the Chargers. But I’m going to wait until the off season and free agency before I change that pick. Really what I think their most pressing need is for someone to take over for Jamal Williams. Unfortunately they wouldn’t have a shot at this point unless they trade up pfor Williams or Cody.
2. The Tampa Pick will be either Suh or Berry. It’s pretty much a toss up. In the end though I just feel that they will fall in love more so with Suh.
3. Don’t count out Ryan Mallett as being the first QB taken. Or if nothing else, him battling it out with Clausen as the first one taken. Obvilously Mallett isn’t as polished as Clausen but I think he has much more upside at the pro level. Bradford is going to drop because of the shoulder injuries.
4. You may be giving Al Davis too much credit. I didn’t think there was any chance in hell that he would draft DHB instead of Crabtree last year. All davis cares about is measureables. He may not go with Mays but he will go with someone who’s a workout warrior. Possibly Carlos Dunlap. He may even go with Gerald McCoy, which would be a great pick. McCoy is actually very quick for a 300 lb. defensive lineman. And of course if he does go with a QB, now that Locker’s staying in school, I think it would be Mallett. He’s got a cannon for an arm, much more so than Bradford.
5. If the Bills have a shot at Campbell or Okung, I would say they take it. Otherwise it would be better for then to take the elite DT still on the board to help to god awful run defense.
sorry- i might be behind
but what about jake locker? i heard great things about him why isnt he on here? is he staying in school?

Mays
All this talk about him being not being good is coverage, in my opinion, is irrelevant. Is Ryan Clark so great in pass coverage? I didn’t think so. Can you teach a guy to be in position? Sure you can. What does Ryan Clark do well other than lay people out? Not much, so to me Taylor Mays is a better Ryan Clark right now. Teach him to be good in coverage and a backfield with Mays and Polamalu is seriously scary. Tomlin used to be a secondary coach for Tampa Bay when they had a sick secondary, so I think he can teach him a couple of things. Of course that doesn’t explain what happened to our secondary this year. But I believe that he will be our best bet out of this draft.
Steelers football is 60 mins.
And that was a sick secondary...
With a safety known more for hits than coverage, John Lynch.

You’re right – Clark is probably our weakest starting DB in coverage and that’s saying something. The question for me is not if Mays would be an upgrade over Clark. Quite simply he would be. The question is if he’s worth being the 14th or 15th overall selection if he can’t give us something more in coverage than Clark.
I hadn’t thought of the John Lynch comparison though. That’s certainly something worth thinking about. Although Lynch was a very smart player throughout his great career, which hid his marginal coverage abilities.
by BluegrassSteeler on Dec 16, 2009 11:16 AM EST up reply actions
Is he worth at 14th
then who else would be? You can’t teach 6’3 you can’t teach speed. I think he’s worth it. Plus there is a serious drop off after berry and mays. You never know what happens on draft day but if he is available I say take him. Not too many better and no point in wasting picks on best player available if the best player available isn’t much better than your player in the position of need. John lynch is probably a hall of fame guy. Not bad.
Steelers football is 60 mins.

You can't teach speed or height but...
The NFL is littered with people who have come and gone that have had all the right measureables and were still not good enough to play. I would rather have someone undersized(Troy anyone?) that can down right play.
And I wouldn’t say that there’s a huge drop-off after Berry and Mays. It’s true they are considered the elite safties in this draft, but there’s still going to be plenty of good ones left. Earl Thomas, Morgan Burnett, Nate Allen, Reshad Jones all have the potential to be good players in the NFL.
+100
Mays’ isn’t a 1st rd pick when evaluated as just a free safety, too risky, bottom of the second at best, unless you’re a 4-3 team where you have the flexibility to move him around and find the best place for him to use his athleticism and skills.

then would Berry be worth the 1st round? I’m not much into college ball but I’ve seen the youtube videos and I like his style.

Berry would be the ideal pick...
….but he’s going in the top 5 for sure. So we would have to trade up to get him.
i agree
i think mays and this dan williams NT are our best options. it depends on what we do in free agency and everything… if we keep hampton take mays.. if we keep clark take williams. because i cant see a scenario where we keep both hampton and clark. both are aging, hampton will be expensive and clark isnt what we thought he was… although he might be serviceable for another year or two while we find someone else.
NT would be a must if we lose hampton though.. so i think that’ll be our priority
but i would love to have mays and troy in the backfield

I can’t say I’ve done much research for the draft, so that’s why I enjoy this post. It helps get me thinking about it (especially since I don’t want to think about the Steelers’ recent play), and it gives me something positive to start thinking about. My main comment on your discussion of the Steelers’ pick is that I doubt they go CB unless an elite player drops to them, since they drafted Lewis and Burnett last year. We all expected OL in the first round each of the last two years, and look what happened. I think your target of a NT is possible. I don’t know about Williams too well, but some of the comments that he’s reach here makes me wonder. OTOH, the FO scouts very well, and I’ve heard it said that good players on bad teams sometimes get undervalued, so if they get him here, I would trust the pick.

my thoughts exactly lol
i love analyzing draft picks in the offseason anyway and these posts take my mind off of how badly we’re playing lately which is nice.
also i agree that we probably wont go CB in the first this year… and that williams here worries me if he’s a reach, however i also dont think we’re going to lose all our games for the rest of the year. so if we can grab him at 18 or 19 thatd be great IMO.

In the first round....
The only corner I could see them drafting would be Joe Hayden, who is the only “elite” prospect at the corner position, and would definitely be worth the pick. The only other DB’sI could see them drafting in the first are all safeties. Of course there’s Berry, who as I’ve stated many times would be the wet dream come true, and there’s also Texas’ Earl Thomas, GT’s Morgan Burnett, and Virginia’s Ras-I Dowling who is a corner but has the size and range to be converted into a free safety.
Agreed
I also think that safety is the more likely direction, with Clark possibly on his way out (certainly aging, anyway) and Carter probably getting too old and questions about Mundy.

If the Rams or Browns pick Clausen
They will continue to be irrelevant for the next 5 years. That guy is a joke. He puts up big passing numbers against weak defenses and his throwing motion is an ugly sight.
Maybe Cody falls to us due to the plethora of defensive linemen in this draft. I also like that guard from Idaho. Guards aren’t typically taken in the first round but that guy could be the next Faneca or Steve Hutchinson. If he graded out as a first rounder I wouldn’t hesitate to take that guy.
I don’t like the idea of taking a safety in the first round unless he is a game – changer. The only game-changer I see in this group is Berry and he’ll be gone by the time we draft. Tomlin might also go after a corner in the first, seeing as he coveted Revis so much his first year here. Don’t be surprised if Haden is our pick.

Any FAs out there that is striking someone's fancy?
I’m not sure if he will resign with KC or not, but Tank Tyler has been developing well as a NT. Not to mention how awesome would it be to have 2 “Tanks” on the team. Maybe a transition from “Bus” to “Tanks” is what we need??

Do we even have one Tank on the team?
Oh, that’s right, I forgot about the “next Bus”. Probably because so far his play has been very forgettable. Get over that back injury Frank, I’m interested to see what you can do when healthy.

My top 4 no. 1 pick options for the Steelers:
1) NT D. Williams
2) ILB R. McCain
3) LT Anthony Davis
4) NT Terrence Cody
The Steelers need help at CB, but I think Joe Haden that early is a risk. How many 5’10 corners (he will probably measure less than that at the combine) other than Antoine Winfield are in the Pro Bowl every year?
Plus, the Steelers need to get back to physical football on both sides of the ball. I think you sign a free agent CB and Safety, spend 2 more draft picks on CBs and 1 on a safety and hope Burnett and Lewis improve dramatically in their 2nd years. And yeah, for the 1,000th time, William “lack of a play” Gay is a free safety.
My top 4 options would be...
First off, I’m going to be realistic with this, so no Berry or Suh. But mine would go like this:
1. ILB R. McClain
That guy is just going to be a special player
2. CD Joe Hayden
He’s the only true elite corner in the class, 5’10" or not.
3.NT D. Williams
I’ve grown to like him over Cody. Williams has all of the same attributes but doesn’t seem to tire out as quickly.
4. S Earl Thomas
Great all around skill set, just not enough playing time to showcase it.
How often do the Steelers sign multiple impact FA’s in the same off season? It just doesn’t happen. You can’t count on them signing even one.
hey big jay
just posted my own mock draft on the site. would love to know what you think.

Love your stuff big jay...
Especially now that the season is effectively over. Many of us really appreciate it. Now on to draft talk….
I really liked Earl Thomas, but someone stated that he doesn’t quite seem like a Steeler. So if I get the chance, I’ll watch him in the Rose bowl and see…
Perhaps the most interesting talk is about Nose Tackle. I had been suggesting for a while that Williams could sufficiently fill that role, but that he would be a lesser mortal than Cody. But now Williams seems like the top rail. To me, the best of the rest all seem like 4-3 NTs. So, now that Williams and Cody are probably going in the first round, is there any other true NT candidate in this draft?
The situation is similar at 3-4 ILB. You have McClain and Spikes. Then you have a welter of guys who may not quite fit the role. I liked the idea of getting Darryl Sharpton, but I read that he is too spindly for a 3-4 ILB. Micah Johnson is another favorite of mine, but he’s probably too slow to fill Farrior’s shoes. Shaun Lee has been injured a lot, and is a little too spindly. And that’s about it.
