Ryan Clark Calls Out Fans & Media

I guess it's pretty frustrating to go from the Super Bowl to missing the playoffs. In the midst of a 5 game losing streak and with terms in the local papers like "losers" being used to describe their play Steeler S Ryan Clark lashed out today. Apparently a letter from a fan is the straw that broke the camels back. Clark posted it on the Steelers bulletin board but the FO PR people took it down before the media could see it. As the Steelers World turns...

Hmmm....

A few things that jumped out at me: One fan or even ten fans doesn’t represent all of Steeler Nation. Also, that Clark might be looking at a pay decrease to stay here. His contract is up at the end of the year and if he wants to stay in Pittsburgh, then he most likely will. He loves the fans passion for the team. If we get Berry or Mays in the first round I think he’ll be regretting that decision. I guess it all will play out in April.

Bad, bad, bad stuff. A player just can’t go there. I understand if he feels that way, but a professional never lets it out.

Fans are irrational? And that bothers you? You’re damn right they’re irrational. That’s why we kick our families to the curb for half a Sunday to watch a game. If the Steelers win, it doesn’t cure cancer, it doesn’t feed the homeless, it doesn’t educate the illiterate. It means nothing except in our irrational football-obsessed noggins where we can’t think straight for days after our beloved team loses. Any football player with one functional synapse in their head knows that their livelihood is plugged 100 percent directly in to our lack of perspective about the fact that football is just a game and the results don’t matter. So the fans and our media are tough on you? And you think that throwing a public hissy fit about it is going to make it better?

I agree that some of the criticism has been hyperbolic, but a professional athlete’s response to fan or media criticism always, always, always has to be to ignore it.

Was it Starkey's column "Steelers played like losers"

that got Clark all riled up? I did take offense to that article as well. Hard for me to accept a professional journalist calling professional athletes “losers.” Athletes go out and perform on a field and face real danger of career ending injuries, whereas a journalist can getting , a hand cramp? Bad form, really bad form.

Ryan Clark HATES to lose. Plays his heart out. And won't be called a loser.

What the hell is so wrong with that?

I don't know...

Not going to name names, but there were a few people who seemed to revel in a loss more than they enjoyed a win. Does that count?

I'm sorry

I love Ryan Clark, but this is not a smart move. The fans pay his salary by paying the (ridiculous) ticket prives, buy the jerseys, and watch the games. And most Steeler fans have been doing this a lot longer than Clark has been a member of the team. We have a right to jeer just as they have a right to cheer, although emailing or sending a letter to a player is over the line.

I don’t have a problem with him having issues with the media, but that’s between him and them, it should not be posted for everyone to see in the LR.

Again, I love Ryan Clark, and I will be watching these next three games just as intently as any three, and yes, there have been some fans who have already quit on this team, but that’s their perogative and not indicitive of Steelers Nation.

He's not talking to all fans

I say screw the fans that he’s talking about. I realize I’m assuming what was in the letter but screw the writer. Freedom of speech for the writer of the letter, freedom of speech to Ryan Clark. They won a Super Bowl last year. I wonder if that fan wrote him a letter thanking him. If people don’t want to buy tickets for Ryan Clark defending himself them hand them over I’ll take them.

I agree about the freedom of speech Arn...

But at the same time, if you love passionate fans when you win, then you have to deal with the flip-side when things go bad. And things have gone VERY bad for this team. So use it as motivation if you must, but a public fit won’t really achieve anything. The reason he makes millions is because he’s a star (in the general sense) in the public eye. Deal with the consequences. It’s just like Hollywood stars complaining about Paparazzi. Can’t do it! Comes with the territory and the paycheck. If you don’t like it, retire, it’s the easiest thing in the world. Do you think Carnell Lake is getting a lot of hate mail these days?

True..but then you have

the small percentage of fans that take it off the deep end and want to take it to extremes. You only have to read some of the fanposts after a loss to see it. The Steelers have spoiled us fans for decades with superior effort that we’ve taken for granted. We’ve come to expect perfection and that is unreasonable.

I don't have a problem with stars complaining about Paparazzi

It may come with the territory but who gives a rats rear end? If someone questions my character I’m not going to smile ansd say “aw shucks”. And if anyone has a problem with me speaking up then they can kiss my rear end. Just because things are the way they are doesn’t mean you have to accept it. That’s part of the reason they are the way they are.

PC is a crock. It’s a neutering agent and a weapon to censure the weak minded.

I'm just saying

If you like being a celebrity and you get paid like one, you have to deal with all aspects of it, good and bad; if you can’t, then you can get out. When regular people go out to work, they deal with the good and the bad. Complaining doesn’t help. Doesn’t mean you can’t defend yourself, but in this case it’s pointless. If I work as a fireman and I complain about the smoke, then I’m in the wrong business. And Arn, I don’t care what you give a rat’s ass about, that really doesn’t make your point. Plus who talked about PC?

And the downward spiral continues

Say what you want about ’06, but stuff like this simply was not happening. Plus, the only guy who gave up that season (Cowher) was leaving the next season anyway.

Fans are the clients of football teams. Teams that play well and treat fans well keep their fans/clients/dollars. Right now, the Steelers aren’t playing well or treating their fans well. If you are in a business and client does something you don’t like (for instance right a mean letter), you try to fix it or you ignore it and keep doing your best.

Tomlin is losing control of this team. The FRONT OFFICE had to come in and take the letter down. Do you think the younger players will have a “Steeler” attitude after playing around complaining Hines, the ever grimacing/shrugging Ben who probably still wants his tall receiver, “Five Rushing Ttitles” Willie Parker, refuse to be captain Faneca, one foot out the door Hampton, and fan/media hating Ryan Clark. Maybe, but doubtful.

I don't necessarily agree with the clients analogy

but the last couple sentences were dead on. If Tomlin doesn’t do some feet stomping and chest pounding these last few weeks and over the course of the offseason, he’s lost the team for good I think. No more creampuff training camps, no more buddy buddy with the players, and no more letting the vets think they’re special. and especially no more letting Ben think he’s an elite QB, because he’s not.

Fans have a right to be angry, players have a right to respond.

Some people give criticism better than others, and some respond to it better than others.

I think in this instance Clark has a right to be upset. A fan wrote a letter to him, personally, criticizing his and his team’s performance. To me, that’s over the line. Ryan Clark’s job is to entertain; that’s it. That’s all sports is on the professional level; entertainment. If you’re not happy with the performance on the field, then don’t watch. Don’t buy tickets, don’t but jerseys, hats, books, etc…and don’t watch on TV.

I went to see the movie Funny People this year, and, despite being a huge Adam Sandler fan, I thought the movie was boring and not funny. However unhappy with the movie I am, I’m not going to write Sandler, Judd Apatow, etc…and tell them that I think they should put forth more effort next time, or that Sandler is letting his fans down, etc….No. Instead, I’m not going to buy the DVD, and I may be hesitant to see his movies in the future.

I apply the same mentality to the Steelers. I don’t for one second think that this team has “mailed it in.” This is a Super Bowl Champion team and organization…and if we learned one thing last year, it’s that this team does not quit. I do think that Clark’s performance has been pretty poor this season, but I won’t question his effort. And, his poor play is not representative of anything other than that: poor play. It’s nothing that I, or anyone else should take personally. Sometimes, people don’t succeed. That’s life. Thank God I don’t receive a letter every time I fail….my house would look like a Fedex mail room.

And furthermore, while he may have said some things that he didn’t necessarily mean and may end up apologizing for, I’m glad he showed some fire when responding to the criticism. That tells me that he hasn’t quit, and being the leader that he is, I’d like to think that other guys will follow his lead and up their performance this Sunday.

Nice

I agree that sports boils down to entertainment. I also think that these guys shouldn’t worry so much about what the fans think (unless you’re the Browns) and more of what the guy standing next to them on the field thinks. You want to make that tackle for the guy next to you. If they play to not let each other down, for the guy next to them, then it doesn’t matter what the fans think.

As for funny people and boycotting. Just do what I do. Download it online. Screw these actors getting paid millions. Bono doesn’t need a golden toilet seat, and Lady Gaga doesn’t need a new outfit. They shouldn’t be paid so much and that’s why the internet is so beautiful. For once we have access to almost every media for free! Now they’ll have to make their money doing concerts. The way true artists make a living.

Fedex mailroom reference: brilliant and hilarious! Clark isn’t a quitter. I don’t think you could find a handful of quitters on this team. They fight, and will continue to do so until that morbidly obese lady starts belting out chords. Until she does that it’s on like Donkey Kong 2 for SNES my friends ;)

Why shouldn’t artists be paid that much? Do you think athletes shouldn’t be paid so much too? If you enjoy the product why shouldn’t you pay for it?

Not trying to pick a fight, I just tend to believe the opposite. Just because you can get something for free does not mean that it is your right to do so. Why are concerts the “way true artists make a living”? Is it some how more difficult or profit worthy than being in a studio and creating a song people want to listen to?

is not as bad as the media is making it out to be. I agree with you Chi. Artists (or you & I) have the freedom to go out in the world and get what we’re worth. What are we worth? The public determines that not a rich corrupt politician saying “he makes too much money”

My cousin was/is an 80s rock star. He made a lot of money in the 80s. He’s got a wife, a house in the Hollywood Hills, a daughter and a couple gold records on the wall. He had to invest that money wisely because art is subjective. The public grows wary and moves on. No one is looking for the next record by Alias or Sheriff anymore. The window for most is small.

If Bono has put out that much great music (he has) and put in the hard work instead of sitting on his duff looking for someone to take care of him he deserves to buy the gold toilet seat. And the cool thing with Capitalism is that someone will make money selling gold toilet seats and someone else will make money selling gold toilet paper rolls to go with it as well as the numerous accountants in charge of counting U2 money.

I like all of your opinions

I’m not going to argue mine because this is such a subjective term. I just believe that music should be free. If you want to go to a concert than you should shell out the money. Also, IMO, Bono hasn’t put out one good song. And that, I’ll argue to the bone. Lol.

Agree

that Bono hasn’t put out one good song. IMO he has a string of them. Kind of like the “standing the test of time” thing from the other thread. You’re right though about art. It is totally subjective. Just for your consideration (words & music) if you have never listened;

Simple fix

Play better. I don’t think anyone would be happy even if our losses were against better teams but at least you could say, hey we lost to a good team. I can’t say that about the chiefs, raiders, or browns, no excuse for those losses.

I'm sure there will be more letters if they lose Sunday :)

Probably so

At least GB is a decent team. I almost think beating GB adds to the frustration, in a, how do you beat GB and lose to those other teams. It has been a strange year. I think the important thing to remember though, is that there is a lot of talent on that team, with a few good off season moves we can be a SB contender for several years. I would like to see at least some FA activity, I know it goes against what we usually do but we have a few more immediate holes than you can fix with the draft.
