Second Round Picks of the Last Ten Years-Feast or Famine

First round successes and failures get discussed quite often, lets take a look at the last ten years of #2 picks the Steelers have chosen, it really is feast or famine.

1999 Scott Shields-I don't even remember this guy playing, all I remember he was from Boise State.  Good thing
thing he was "famine", we might not have drafted Troy otherwise.

2000 Marvel Smith-feast, solid OL, often injured (back issues).

2001 Kendrell Bell-feast for a couple of years, injuries.

2002 Antwaan Randle El-feast, last good punt returner, wish he would have stayed.

2005 Alonzo Jackson-famine, sucked in our scheme

2004 Ricardo Colclough-famine, sucked, never developed.

2005 Bryant McFadden-feast, solid corner, made two giant plays at the end of the Colts playoff game.

2006-no second round pick, 3rd round was Anthony Smith-famine, big mouth, ticked off the Patriots

2007-Lamar Woodley-feast, love the guy

2008-Limas Sweed, this one has been beaten to death this year, please comment on someone else.

2009-Kraig Urbik??????????, heard virtually nothing about him this year.

Of the eleven you can honestly say five were really good or solid picks.  It was difficult to sort the living fom the dead when it came to Shields, Coclough, Sweed, Smith, and Jackson.  Urbik?  Who knows?

How would I rank them in order of disappointing?

                                       1. Shields/Jackson/Sweed

                                        1a.  Coclough/Smith

They all basically stole money from the Steelers and the fans, I don't think anyone other than Sweed is even active on a roster at this point.

I think colcough was spotted on the KC roster?

but yes, I definitely agree with your analysis. Woodley is better than most first round picks

We traded our 2009 2nd round pick

Kraig Urbik, Mike Wallace, and Keenan Lewis were all 3rd round picks.

He got put on waivers

he was claimed by the Rams. It actually turned out to be a pretty big mistake by the Packers to cut him though, his absence was exposed.

He actually got waved by the Rams after the Packers. As of last month he’s actually a Jag. Wild.

Smith

The Packers tried to claim him off waivers after getting cut by the Rams, but the Jags had the rights. So far he has two picks in five games with the Jags.

What's a pick?

I don’t think I’ve seen one by a Steeler this year.
Unless, your taking about Heaths “pick” that took away a TD against the Vikings.

If you buy a foreign made product you give money to a person who will not be buying an American made produdt that you get paid to make. Think about it next time you're at the store.

I looked it up

It’s slang for an interception. I think it’s something our defense is supposed to try to do, but I’m not well versed on the matter.

ya that 43 guy with the beautiful hair had some this year?

How come I haven’t seen him play in a while?

Bring a towel to the game. Black or gold or yellow. If you don't have one buy one, If you can't buy one, dye one!

Now that you mention it

I’ve seen them try but as a great green one once said, “there is no try”

Interesting stuff.

Who we should go for in the second round…..that would be an interesting discussion. It’s just that it’s so hard to guess who won’t be available and who might be a reach. I’m assuming that we will get a Nose Tackle in the first round,

Man do I like Iupati, but I suspect that he won’t last until our spot in the second. Ditto for Allen Bailey. Either is a no-brainer in the second round. I guess that would mean a choice between the two, which necessitates a “brainer”. Eh, well…

If those two are both gone (or undeclared), I sorta like Major Wright. But I always like these guys who don’t fit our scheme (like Brian Price). He’s slow for a safety and maybe should play OLB in a 4-3.

I like Sean Lee, but he has been injured and he is a little spindly for the things that our ILBs need to do.

Mike Johnson seems reasonable, but the choice seems a little staid. I’d almost rather see John Jerry (a round or two later), but I know that Jerry probably lacks a second dimension. Well, that mattered under BA. But with a new OC, who knows?

I’d be pleased to get Arrelious Benn in the second because he is so strong. I suppose that’s my only reason. But Steeler fans can sympathize with an appreciation for manliness at WR. But it also said that he has brick hands….

On a similar note, I also like Eric Decker, but he just doesn’t seem to offer enough for a second round pick, especially after his injury…

Anthony Davis (T) is another guy I like, but he surely won’t last until the mid second. He has played both guard and tackle. Run blocks well.

I like O’Dowd a lot ©, but he should be long gone as the best center in the draft.

Tyson Alualu is very intriguing. He plays 3-4 DE already. I like him if we cannot get a NT, or if our first round BPA is not a NT. Meaning that he could shore up and strengthen a DE position if we have to wait for our dream NT. But he seems like a reach…

Hmmm. Evaluating second round talent is harder than I thought. Maybe that’s why our FO has whiffed so often. Assuming that Iupati, Bailey, Davis, and O’Dowd are gone, or unavailable, I think I would take a chance on Arthur Jones, especially if we don’t get our NT ,
