Around SBN: Tiger Woods Makes His 2012 PGA Tour Debut

2010 DREAM DRAFT-what's yours?

1st Round--S- Trade up to get Eric Berry Tenn (lose a 4th rounder).. We need a feasible backup to Troy and one that could possibly play opposite of him.
2nd Round-- NT- Dan Williams Tenn if he is available (someone to play behind Hampton and Hoke to groom because Hampton will resign)
3rd Round-- RB or OL- Anthony Dixon MSU, Ben Tate AUB, or Brandon Minor MICH---OR John Jerry Ole Miss, Mike Johnson BAMA, or Sam Young ND. (We need a complement to up and coming Mendenhall do to Parker's aparent departure) (We need depth and talent on our oline obviously)

4th Round comp (possible compensation for BMac or Nate Washington leaving via FA)-- LB- Micah Johnson KY or Antonio Coleman AUB (We need someone to groom other than Pat Bailey at linebacker and the Bruce Davis project has failed)

5th Round--WR or RB- Dexter McCluster Ole Miss (this guy is just an athlete- we lack an all around athlete like Percy Harvin, Darren Sproles, and Joshua Cribbs and one who is an actual threat to return kicks)

6th Round-- FB- Richard Dickson LSU- (even though we have H-backs.. we don't have a true FB.  Send Summers to practice squad and David J. as the blocking TE that they like to use)

7th Round-- K- Leigh Tiffin BAMA (This dude is sick.  Accurate and poised.  We need someone behind Skippy who has pretty much served his tenure)

7th Round comp-- DB- Walter McFadden AUB (This guy would be an absolute steal in the later rounds- he is projected to go undrafted but has held guys likes Julio Jones, Brandon LaFell, Riley Cooper, etc.)

This could lighten the mood from our grim losses.  Let's see everyone's dream draft for 2010

I would kill a man to get Eric Berry. Sadly, not even the threat of murder is going to make that happen. I’m with you though, if i could have any first round talent it would be him. Berry and Troy at safety would be….well, lets just say teams would beg us to safety blitz just so they don’t get picked.

As a UK guy I have a man crush on Micha Johnson. He’s not ready to go out of the gate, but he never takes a play off. He likes to hit. He plays smart. And he’s a good citizen. At the very least he’s a great backup for us. But he has enough upside to be a Foote type ILB: Great against the run, solid (but not spectacular) in coverage, and willing, but limited at blitzing. With Farrior going downhill quickly, it’s important to think about his eventual replacement.

McCluster as a change of pace back/KR/PR would be sick.

What about an OLB? We really have nothing behind Harrison and the Wood. They’re every down players, but if one of them gets injured it’s seriously going to hurt us up front.

by BluegrassSteeler on Dec 2, 2009 2:13 AM EST reply actions

I agree 100 percent

I think that if Antonio Coleman was available in the late rounds, we would definetly take him as a great OLB prospect. Maybe a quick and savvy DE in the later rounds could be polished and even though we don’t build in FA, there is always a diamond in the rough.

by MSsteele on Dec 2, 2009 2:22 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah

Berry would be brilliant for us. Although it will never happen, i would love to see Toby Gerhart in a Steelers jersey, however, this is immpossible. Realistically, i think we need Nose Tackle or a guard, maybe a late round linebacker.

Dreams can come true

Nice Idea, sick today so I’ll do just the first 3 rounds.

Round 1: option a. Joe Haden-Can make the bad memories of losing Darrelle Revis to the Jets a distant memory, and could potentially make this secondary close to unbeatable. option b. Rolando McClain-apparently the next Patrick Willis, and opposing teams would crap themselves trying to game plan against us. Option C. Cameron Heyward-probably the most realistic of the 3, but he’s got my vote as favorite potential draft prospect, but could easily be out of our range of draft picks. Funny all 3 of these guys are juniors, and may not even declare, but I’d bet that at least one does, probably 2.

Round 2: option a. Dan Williams-We’ll probably get him in the first at this point. option b. Jahvid Best-another potential first rounder for us, many people have him slipping into the second round do to durability concerns. Option C. Stefen Wisniewski-Current Center for Penn State who is a native of Western Pennsylvania, actually lived right outside of Pittsburgh, and many argue that he could be the best center in this draft if he declares. If that’s the case it’d be a dream if we could get him in here.

Round 3: option a. Sergio Render-Not sure where he’s goin’ at this point, but it’s very possible that he’s drafted here. option b. Joe Pawelek-LB out of Baylor-Doubt he lasts this long but if he does the Steelers would love to pick him up. option c. Reshad Jones-Extremely doubtful that he lasts this long, but I’ve seen him project in round 1, and round 3, and even round 5. I’ll take him here.

Sergio Render....

.
Hmmm. Yesterday I posted that the Steelers don’t typically want to get the very top shelf guys on the line. My theory is that money can be reliably saved on the offensive line while still fielding a team that can reliably compete for championships. The saved money can go towards keeping some true game changers like Troy and James. My pick for offensive line was John Jerry, as a lesser mortal who could suffice on the offensive line. He might be available in the fourth. But Sergio Render might come nearer to hitting the sweet spot, the ideal value. He’s not elite, but he’s probably the best of the rest. He’s a little like Louis Vasquez from last spring’s draft. We missed him by one spot and settled on Urbik. Urbik may pan out, but Vasquez is the guy I was pulling for. Not elite, but very strong and tenacious. I was sorry to see him go to the Chargers. I’m feeling that Render is a lot like Vasquez and is a guy we should get. Good call. But if we miss Render, I still like John Jerry later.

Also...

A guy we could get as an UDFA at ILB would be Vincent Rey (Duke). I don’t know what it is with me and these big, slow middle linebackers. Rey moved to the middle this season, so he has experience at multiple LB positions. He has been a tackling machine, so he is well-seasoned. He could be a credit to the organization as a superb backup.

Outside LB.

I want a free Safety that can cover, don’t care who it is.

I want a NT.

I want an outside LB to groom and back up Woodley and Harrison, I want him to be able to cover RB’s and TE’s.

I want a corner if K.Lewis isn’t going to take a top 3 corner spot. One that is big and can play physical like McFadden could.

But what I really want to see is Sonny develop into a very good DE, Mundy be that cover safety, K.Lewis develop and split time with Gay as second CB, Redman to turn into a more complete back and be a second punch with Mendenhall, Tank to take the FB/ST job and claim it as his. (do we even have him anymore?) and Burnett to look like a viable future starting CB. Then all we need is LB’s. Oh did I forget Shipley Urbik Foster and Legursky giving serious pushes to the starters, and maybe winning a spot or two? Basically I want what we were all hoping for this off-season when dreams of 16-0 were fluttering through our brains.

A great OLB

In the 3rd round would be Georgia’s Rennie Curran. He’s undersized like Harrison, but he has a non-stop motor and is a sound tackler. Another option would be Texas A&M’s DE/OLB Von Miller.

To not allow a single sack against you’re pass rush (granted Suggs was out, but so was Kemoeatu), and help Rashard Mendenhall to get 95 yards rushing.

They only neeed a RG

Hopefully they will target one in the 2nd or 3rd round. Everyone in Steeler nation seems to be in love with Idaho’s Mike Lupati, be he may be gone by the time we pick in the second round. But ’Bama’s Mike Johnson would be a great consolation prize. Or we could target Ole Miss’ John Jerry or VT’s Sergio Render in the 3rd.

by big_jay71 on Dec 2, 2009 1:17 PM EST up reply actions

?????

Really tough to say right now, but from everything I’ve read, the Steelers would have no shot at Eric Berry even if they go winless for the rest of the season.

I have no idea what the Steelers will do, but from what I’ve seen so far this season, I’d lean to, in order of priority, corner, inside linebacker, nose tackle, safety.

by pghnorthside on Dec 2, 2009 11:08 AM EST reply actions

Yes that’s how we got Troy but trading into the top 5 for Berry would take a lot more than it took to get Troy.

Unless we lose out

by PixburghArn on Dec 2, 2009 1:06 PM EST up reply actions

Very True

If we lose out, and end up with about the 9th pick like I projected in a previous post, then it would certainly be worth trading up for Berry. In that case it would only cost us a 3rd(or maybe 4th) and a 5th.

by big_jay71 on Dec 2, 2009 1:09 PM EST up reply actions

Trading up to the top 5 would probably take a trade like New Orleans swapping their entire draft to get Ricky Williams.

Not to mention, trading up that far means writing a check for a mammoth signing bonus. As much as I think anyone who calls the Rooney’s cheap are off base, I doubt they are looking to engineer a move that will mean they get to write a check for an 8 figure signing bonus to a rookie.

by pghnorthside on Dec 2, 2009 5:57 PM EST up reply actions

That was Ditka's fault

Trading the entire draft to move up for Ricky Williams was Ditka’s initial offer. If he had any sense at all he would’ve started with a lower offer and it would’ve only cost the Saints half of that.

by big_jay71 on Dec 2, 2009 6:17 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe that’s what Tomlin meant by bringing hell, losing out. That’s be great for us Draft freaks.

I would do anything

For Eric Berry, I’d be cool with giving up a third and fifth rounder for him. Could you imagine Troy and Berry… good lord

by daburgh73 on Dec 2, 2009 11:45 AM EST reply actions

Eric Berry would be a God send but...

It would cost a lot more than a swap of first rounders and a 4th rounder to get him. Realistically we will be picking somewhere between 20-25, and Berry is going to be pick in the top 5. It would take our 1st rounder and next years 1st rounder to get him. Our perhaps our 1st, 3rd, and 4th rounder.

The Dream For Me

Got this on a few other posts as well:
Round 1-Terrance Cody-need a young NT and he is best fit for a 34
Round 2-Mike Iupati-G Idaho-Line has played much better but could use an athletic brawler on the interior of the right side
Round 3-Daryl Washington-ILB TCU-Plays Sideline to Sideline, could groom him under Farrior, I believe he makes the TCU defense go while be gravely overshadowed by Jerry Hughes
Round 4-Myron Rolle-FS FSU-Took a year off to become a Rhodes Scholar this year. Don’t know if he is entering the draft or not, but if he is can dream he free falls this far. He is intelligent, fast, big, catches the ball, and would compliment Troy well in a year or two while be a great backup for either Troy or Clark if they go down.
Round 5-Amari Spievey-CB Iowa-If he comes out very good chance he won’t be here this late, but who says we can’t dream. Coming out the Big 10 we know he is going to be physical, especially Iowa, and has the physical tools to be so, 6 foot almost 200 pounds.
Round 6-Nate Triplett-ILB Minnesota-Kid plays with a lot of heart and is all over the field. Won’t ever make the starting defense, but would be a solid special teamer for us and God knows we need help every where on ST.
Round 7-Dane Fletcher-DE/OLB Montana State University-I go to school here so need to throw a shout out for one of our guys. Again, won’t crack our starting D, but plays like a man possessed and would develop into a good ST player for us. Recorded 17.5 TFL and 7 sacks during this year. Buck Buchanan Award Finalist, which is awarded to the best DE in the FCS.

He was aa All American safety at FSU (if I remember correctly) and is a good person to boot. He’d make a great Steeler.

Rolle was overrated at FSU

Some poeple were saying he was the next Sean Taylor and he wasn’t even close to being that. Good player, but not an elite safety.

by StoneColdSteel on Dec 2, 2009 2:00 PM EST up reply actions

If he is there in the fourth it would be what is called a value pick and probably in many peoples eyes a steal. Pretty sure he had a first round grade if he would have entered last year. Him sitting there in the fourth would be comparable to Michael Bush being there in the fourth, who I still wish we would have drafted, who had a great shot of being a top 10 pick before he destroyed his knee. Only Rolle didn’t get injured, he went to Oxford to continue his education. Not saying Rolle was a top 10 but a first rounder.

by redmik on Dec 2, 2009 10:04 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with that

That would be a value pick, but I can’t see us taking him any higher than that. He’s just not that good of a playmaker.

I’m a Miami (FL) fan so I got the chance to see him play quite a bit. I wasn’t impressed with him. But if he’s there in the fourth I wouldn’t mind taking him.

I really like

and I think this was said above, but Micah Johnson seems real impressive to me. Guy’s a 6’2" MLB for UK, and a tackling machine. Also seems like he’s got good character, and is a team leader. Could be a steal in the 2nd or 3rd round.
