Around SBN: Tiger Woods Makes His 2012 PGA Tour Debut

Wow, Talk About A Long Three Weeks!

This has just been a painful three weeks. My psychiatrist says there aren't strong enough drugs on the market to deal with the psychological problems resulting from this losing streak. LOL, just kidding. I'm really not crazy enough to have to go to the head shrink over this...yet.

While I'm not pleased with where the Steelers are record-wise, I was not all that dissapointed with last Sundays game. At least not on the offensive side of the ball. I thought Dennis Dixon performed great. It was the defense that could not, once again, protect a fourth quarter lead. Very frustrating.

Dixon was better than I imagined. His run for the touchdown looked effortless. His run up the middle, the one called back for holding, scared the hell out of the Ravens. I think it made them change their defense, which was what hurt Dixon in the second half. If anything (Here comes the BA bashing) the Steelers O.C. failed to adjust the the Ravens defensive adjustments. Even Collinsworth was calling for a run or boot by Dixon. I was expecting it. Why in God's name wasn't it called. I mean look at the yards gained on Dixon's two runs!

While there is a lot said about how BA asks Ben what he likes to do, I am now convinced Ariens is one of those coordinators that has an offensive concept that he is going to cram down the teams throat. Instead of designing a strategy that utilizes Dixon's strengths, his idea of "tailoring" the offense to a player is asking him which of BA's plays the player likes. I just can't help the feeling that the Ravens' defense was ripe for a few good, well though out, quarterback runs. Grrr...

Back to Dixon. I was impressed. On a team that takes two years to get their first round players ready for games, a second year, fifth rounder, did his part to put the Steelers in good shape to win the game. He went to the Ravens' house, on national television, in prime time, against a desperate and physical team and did nothing short of almost win the game. I ask you: If Carter played that well in place of the defensive quarterback, Troy Polomalu, whould the defense be losing fourth quarter leads? I think not.

Dixon has a bright future. If not as the Steelers second string quarterback, then as someone elses starter when he reaches free agency. You know the Browns would snap him up in a heartbeat.

While I'm very disappointed in the three game losing streak, that game, considered all by itself, wasn't such a disappointment. Take both Bob Sanders and Peyton Manning away from the Colts and ask them to play the Ravens on Sunday Night Football in Baltimore and see who wins. If anything, this game just served to show what the Steelers should be able to do against the Ravens when they go to Pittsburgh and both Troy and Ben are once again healthy.

Champagne moment: At the end of the game, the Steelers had not given up a kickoff or punt return for a touchdown. Baby steps.

I think Hines Ward's statements, while seemingly questioning Ben's physical toughness, showed a lack of mental toughness. Very disappointing. Mental toughness seems to be what this team is lacking this year, IMHO. I think that comes from the top. I think that Mike Tomlin's "Unleash hell" statement was a frustration statement, and while potentially motivating, showed a lack of mental toughness. It worried me more that inspired confidence in me.

All will be forgotten though, with some wins.

Has James Farrior lost a step, or is Ray Rice that good? Let the debate begin. However it comes out, look for the Steelers to maybe go for a linebacker in the first two rounds.

Maybe we should stop calling Mr. Hood, Ziggy. Maybe a nickname like Mauler or Chainsaw would motivate him to pick up his game. I really thought this opportunity would push him to greatness. I thought wrong. I would just like to the first rounder make an impact in his first year, every year. Who was the last to do it for the Steelers? Casey Hampton?

I would like to see if Townsend could play better than Gay. I would like to see those two cornerbacks the Steelers drafted step up and step in.

I find myself trolling the mock drafts already and have decided to read Big_Jay71 religiously every week. If you read this Big_Jay71, would you consider where we draft without a total collapse, but still not making the playoffs, or losing in the first round?

I just don't see the Steelers pulling it together an winning the Super Bowl this year. There, I said it. I was awed by the Saints the other night and have a feeling it might just be their year. I would hate for the Steelers to get to the Super Bowl and lose. Nothing like missing out on a ring and getting the thirty-first pick in the draft. I don't care what anyone says, that just sucks! I would rather the Steelers get a better draft pick.

On to the rest of the NFL...

Peyton Mannig is just cruel. I'm starting to think he is spotting the other team points only to watch their faces as he yanks the win away from them in the fourth quarter. It is kind of like Santa running through the living room on Christmas morning and ripping a present out of you hands. It's just plain cruel what he is doing to the opposing teams.

As to the idea of the Colts not worrying about the record once they win the number-one seed on the AFC, I think not playing to win is the wrong strategy. I think a team should play hard every week and stay tough. In years past, I think relaxing has hurt the Colts, even if it has allowed them to stay healthy.

On a simpler note, I love the Peyton Manning, Allison Hannigan commercials. "It's a football". "Who told"?...Just makes me chuckle every time. You see, I have this idea in my head of Peyton where he is always thinking bout football. I can just picture him diagramming a play at the table for a bored date. The Stretch, Nickle Over, Lefty Sneak is when he  takes a date to a movie, pretends to stretch, puts his arm around her, and steals some popcorn from her lap. Eli just rolls his eyes when Peyton tells him about it. P.S. he runs the Stretch, Nickle Over, Righty Sneak, too.

Charlie Weiss? Hell no. Have we learned nothing from Romeo, Mangini, and Charlie? They suck without the guidance of the overlord. If we have to replace BA, then lets go looking for an up-an-coming talent, one with some fresh ideas and some energy. When Mangini is the slimmest of the three, you have to doubt the, um, energy usage.

I really didn't watch that much Sunday football this week, so that is all the ramble I have for the week. Oh, I forgot to mention that the Hated Patriots are cheaters and that ESPN sucks.

I hope you all had a great holliday.

Go Steelers.

On the Farrior-Rice quandary? Yes. Rice is very good, but Farrior has lost a step. Maybe two.

Last first rounder to make an impact as a rookie would be Heath Miller.

I’d like to see less of Townsend. Gay has disappointed, but Townsend has bombed. Lewis or Burnett though would be interesting.

I’m pretty sure that the two things Charlie Weis has going for him right now are he used to be the coordinator in New England and he used to coach a college football team that has unlimited resources but has been known more for its reputation than its performance for at least a couple of decades now. He’s done some good things, but I don’t think Weis is the answer. Not to mention, Weis and Ben would not be a good mix IMO.

You're right.

I forgot about Heeeeeath. So, the last two to perform were Hampton and Miller. The Steelers need to be better than that.

LOL

You are killing me! Who are you to bring reason into a rant? A rant is to release some negative feelings. Now, I have to figure how to deal with this embarasment.

Well, after the last few weeks, I figure you’ve got plenty of material for this and probably a few more rants.

I like the Bengals OC if they let him go we could pick him up

he likes to run the ball and sticks with it even if the other teams Defense stops it once he keeps with the run not turn into the Hawaii University offense or SMU

they are leading the division

i don’t think they’ll let him go, not to mention he was with the Steelers in 2005 for the 5th ring. cincy picked him up when Cowher left.

he is definitely cut out of the Cowher cloth though, which is nice.

You look at some post at the Cincy Jungle after the Oakland Loss they wanted his head

I quess they don’t understand what it takes to win

i know i saw that same thing

you nailed it, they don’t understand what it takes to win. i am like you, i would like to see BB as our OC and i do think BA will go if we don’t go a LONG way in the playoff’s. not sure who we’ll bring in though.

the Raider are dead last against the run and it will be freezing cold in the Burgh this weekend, if we don’t run it 40 times i’ll be shocked. then again, i’ve been shocked all year.

Go Raiders. Let’s keep the streak alive. Heyward Bey break out game. Woozy Ben barely survives.

It’s always fun and games with Troy out. Like pulling the heart from a buffalo and letting the Bengals, Chiefs and Ravens share the ceremonial first bites.

That’s the second time Rice embarrassed Farrior. Remember the stiff arm Rice gave him in our 2nd meeting. Sent Farrior flying. If only knuckle head Cam gave Rice the ball in the Championship game. I’m willing to give Ariens a try.

Good luck Burghs. See you soon!

don’t you yawn me sir! the raiders will win though. ben has taken too much of a beating over the years. your inability to get him line protection is crazy. it’s a slap in his face.

by raven on Dec 4, 2009 2:51 PM EST up reply actions

Sometimes, raven, I feel like you don’t watch football at all. You just read a couple of headlines and make conjectures as to what is occurring in the NFL. Ben has a great offensive line this year. Maybe in past years you could blame a good portion of the hits on them, but not this year. Ben continues to extend his plays which is the nature of his injury problem. Until he learns to protect himself injuries are going to be often for him. And if he doesn’t fix the problem soon he will find himself sitting on his couch unable to form thoughts.

just fartin around. i can x and o sometimes but the boss patrols the office so i need to shoot off quick odd ball sentences.

i am a big ben fan and was disappointed to see dixon. i like full power footballl to get to the bottom of things. i do realize ben holding onto the ball for a year while he looks to carve up d’s amounts to sacks and motor scooter accidents.

by raven on Dec 4, 2009 3:09 PM EST up reply actions

DID THEY SACK DIXON?

That shows the O line IS doing their job..BB takes the sacks by the way he plays…your O line…how many sacks they they give up?? 5!!

ps..
Concussions were fine until they gave them a name. I can’t believe Ben let down Ward. I mean, Ward plays his ass off with concussions. Asking to be held out against B-more so he can lay back. Man. I hope Ward asks to be traded so he doesn’t have to play with that sissy. Maybe Ben should retire so he can stay healthy. Mendenhall should move on as well. He just isn’t cutting it. Put Palko in and get ready for the furture already.

by raven on Dec 2, 2009 11:23 PM EST reply actions

Laugh about Palko but what is really funny

is that Flacco couldn’t even beat him out at Pitt. Consequently, his daddy pulled him out of there so he could get some playing time at prestigous Delaware…….

Triple Yawn-

steelers vs bungles, chiefs and ravens.

by raven on Dec 4, 2009 2:49 PM EST up reply actions

Isn't cutting it?

Are you kidding me? He runs harder than any ravens back. Hell, if we had an offensive line that could move opponents, mendenhall would be in the top 5 without a doubt.

by JBoyFreshhh on Dec 3, 2009 2:40 PM EST up reply actions

Check out Ray Rice's numbers...

I’m not saying he’s better than Mendenhall, but he is in the top five by conference, and top ten by league. One tenth of a yard less per carry, and one carry more per game. Not a popular statement, but I’m just sayin’…

yeah, mendenhalls pretty much done. just don’t see the wisdom in bringing him back. you’d be better off with Jamal Lewis.

by raven on Dec 4, 2009 2:55 PM EST up reply actions

seriously, mendenhall is much better than i expected. to me, he has shown nice progress, he looks bigger and stronger this year. he’ll be a force for years to come. if ou would have put the ball in his hands instead of getting a little pass happy in the late 3rd-4th quarter ou probably win. your run was making me nervous and i only relaxed when dixon dropped back.
