Green Bay Packers (9-4) @ Pittsburgh Steelers (6-7): BTSC Week 15 Open Thread (2nd Half)

A very entertaining 1st half has the Steelers ahead 21-14.

Can the Steelers finish and keep their slim (but bigger after today's action) playoff hopes alive?

that play is gonna get called back

they should have a guy watching on tv and if he thinks that the play could be reviewed against the steeler, then he calls for a quick run play to avoid the red flag.

How many Baltimore Ravens does it take to win a Super Bowl? Nobody knows and we may never find out

by Cheex on Dec 20, 2009 7:26 PM EST reply actions

Simplest explanation ever

A coach’s job is to pick the highest percentage that allows his team to win. The odds were high on the kick itself. The odds were good, failing that, that the Steelers would get the ball back with two minutes. The odds are shockingly low the Steelers D could stop an elderly woman in a mobility scooter. More time = more opportunity for Ben.

In fact, it was the smartest coaching decision I;ve seen since Tom Coughlin first made giving up a TD early to get the ball back fashionable.

Playoff Scenario

Steelers need to win out, and Denver needs to lose 1 of their remaining two

and I think that is it, because if we win out, we will beat Baltimore and Miami, who are the other two competitors.

by PaulMorel on Dec 20, 2009 7:55 PM EST reply actions

i think you're right.

Miami lost today to put them 7-7. Winning out puts us and baltimore in.

by tha1andonly57@aim.com on Dec 20, 2009 7:55 PM EST reply actions

nah

that was a great call… win win think about it

A. your team gets the ball back… you win
B. you d gets a short field which in the worst case that GB scores, you in turn have enough time to make a late rally

It was the best scenario
or you can try C. which is what you are suggestion
kick it far let them get the ball on the 25 and run the clock out while they score, its what has happened all year do you really blame tomlin for trying something different?

I still can't wrap my head around this one

Essentially Tomlin looked at the odds and realized what an abject failure his defense was, and simply decided the game was not going to be decided by them, as it has been in most of our losses this season.

To me there is little that says more about the state of this team than that onside’s call and how prescient it was on what Tomlin knows about his team on both sides of the ball.

Let’s say the Broncos win out and clinch the 5th seed, we have the 6th seed as a possibility. And even if we beat the Ravens, and then beat the Phins, Raven’s go through on tiebreak (if it’s only between us and them). Obviously there are more scenario’s but that’s a simplified version…

yeah . . . i really think the bigger losses of the defense was aaron smith/bret kiesel . . . the d-line got very thin with those guys out . . .

our pass rush has declined as a result (of those guys not occupying o-linemen) . .. and thus . . . the steelers’ defensive backs were exposed this year big time!! . . . really big time!! . . . the loss of troy was huge . . . but you need the meat and potatoes to have long term success . . . i hope the steelers focus on the meat and potatoes stuff (both lines!!) in the off season . . . if you can’t get to the quarterback in today’s nfl, your defensive backs will eventually get worked as the rules favor the receivers . . .

That finish made me laugh

I went over and looked at the Slackers site. This post was only after the first half:

The NFL is a joke…
What’s the point of having reviews if you have crooked, incompetent or cowardly referees who can’t or won’t make the call correctly?? Wallaces left foot wasn’t on the ground until he landed out of bounds. Roethlesburger fumbled.
And how many times does the Steeler offensive line get away with holding our pass rushers with no call??
Note to ViQueen fan…no one on this site cares.

The game was only over for a few minutes and there was a fanpost with a lot if incoherent anger at Brett Favre. Somehow he used his powers to affect the crappy kicker. Funny stuff.

Twas a hell of a game

Congratulations from a Packer. It was a heartbreaking loss for me, but Big Ben did that in the Superbowl so it kinda makes you feel better.

Good luck the rest of the way.

Thanks,

It was a hell of a game to watch from both sides of the ball.

Great last 5:24

Which I could watch because the riveting match up TB @ Seattle had the decency to end early (with the HeeHawks losing) and Fox switched. That was enjoyable.

My initial reaction:

My Facebook Status: So I just got a tattoo of Ben Roethlisberger riding in chariots of fire throwing a halo to Mike Wallace as Jesus…

Now time to go change my pants

BTSC Obituaries

OldManSteeler, ominously died two days before Superbowl 123 where the Ravens are set to attempt their 7th superbowl win, facing the Detroit Lions on Sunday. He was 86. His last words are believed to be "MALOR CAN SUCK IT!!!". Like friends and family, we can only guess what this could mean.

There are few games

Where the QB can throw up 500 yards and 3 TD’s and the team wins by just 1 point.that defense, especially the secondary has a whole lot of soul searching to do…they are very much exposed without Troy in there..

in related news

Greg Warren is out for the season again, the long snapper tore a knee ligament on the final extra point no less…I wonder if Jeret Retkofsky is tired of his day job somewhere.

Thank God it happened when it did

I’d have hated to see our season torpedoed by James Harrison snapping again.

Tomlin's best coaching to date

The next time someone throws a cliche out there like "you make your own luck" just remember that Mike Tomlin in fact did.

Why be good, when you can be lucky?

They scored with 0:00 on the clock; this was not because on good clock management.
Was it a good call because they won? It was a gutsy call so give Tomlin credit for doing something different.

Coughlin-esque

Does anyone remember a game a few seasons ago when Tom Coughlin (Giants coach) had his defense give up a go-ahead TD so they could get the ball back sooner?

The only difference here is that Tomlin had two ways he could win. It was beyond smart.

And Tomlin has, prior to this game, been a weak gameday coach. The Steelers got lucky in the Super Bowl that Larry Fitz broke that last score early. Of course, the Cards have come back this season and gotten married to the run, but that’s another matter that dovetails mostly into a discussion of Russ Grimm and Beanie Wells . . .

As for Tomlin, does anyone recall that jaguars playoff game a few years when he went for two way too early, and you had that nagging fealing that was gonna bite him in the ass? And it did.

The losing streak may have been good for Tomlin. It finally forced him to take ownership of the team, instead of just letting Dick LeBeau make shit up with Polamalu and Arians make shit up with Roethlisberger.

This was the first game since Cowher retired when I was thankful for Mike Tomlin.

Now, if we can address the issue of the run-pass ratio . . .

Not only did he go for 2 way too early

did it from the 12 yard line after the obligatory holding penalty.

why does no one hear realize that

we CANNOT finish tied with DEN AND BAL at 9-7 and still make the playoffs…DIVISION TIES ARE BROKEN FIRST, AND THE LOWER TEAM IS ELIMINATED ENTIRELY…EVEN IF WE WIN TIE BREAKERS WITH MIA, NYJ, OR WHO EVER, IF WE ARE SOMEHOW TIED WITH BAL, WE CANNOT GO TO THE PLAYOFFS UNLESS DEN COMPLETELY LOSES OUT BOTH OF THEIR GAMES.

Way to stay positive

First, I can see Denver finishing 8-8. They’re not a good football team. Any team with Kyle Orton and his famous neck beard at QB has a chance to lose on any Sunday. Ask the Bears fans.

Second, Baltimore could finish 8-8. Oakland is getting it together. Truth be told, if Tom Cable weren’t saddled with the worst owner and the worst anointed starting QB in football, they’d be in the hunt right now.

Third, besides the top two in the AFC, nothing is set in stone. The NFL is a weird, weird place. Baltimore, in theory, could still get a home game. New England could still finish out entirely. Two games in the NFL is a lifetime. There is a reason people watch this league, and it is because “Any given Sunday” is not a marketing gimmick.

Say what you will, but at least a lot of this will be settled on the field. The Steelers get a chance to ding two teams in front of them. At least they have some hand in taking down the folks in front of them.

Playoff Scenario we need...

We need the Texans, Jets and Jags to all lose at least once and we need to win out.
After that we need either Baltimore to lose out (losing to us and Oakland in week 17), OR Denver to lose at least once(a legitimate possibility against Philly next week), and we’ll be in. A tough scenario, but given that the Texans play Miami and the Pats, the Jets play Indy, and the Jags play the Pats, there’s definitely a chance, albeit a small one.
